I just signed up on Videomaker today and wanted to start out with a forum solely for discussing the JVC GY-HM750U. I just purchased this camera not too long ago and am working to get a better understanding of ALL of the features of this camera. I will primarily shoot music videos and non-profit events. Does anyone out there own this camera? I have searched the web for a tutorial on the use of this camera as well as when and when not to use many of its cool features such as the preset cinema mode. Any comments, suggestions, stories, questions and discussions regarding the newest JVC ProHD camera would be appreciated.

yes. FCP will import png sequences, as will most other NLES. If they are not png freiendly they are tga, psd, or otherwise friendly. Bottom line is any alpha friendly uncompressed file will work.

That said, if looking at rendering image sequences, you may as well just bust out an uncompressed quicktime. Far more handles when it comes to fields, ect.

yeah Grinner I was thinking along those lines, wasn't sure if all nle's will use png with transparent backgrounds, that is why I was guessing using green background layers... thanx for correcting me.

:0)

another question Grinner.. is it possible to use animated pngs as well? like if you used photoshop to make each image an animation? Will that work with nle's such as final cut?

the multi freeze frame effect can be done by exporting the frames you want to freeze then cutting out what you want to keep in photoshop. Save those as png files and import them into vegas with alphas. You can then lay em in as you like with the video. Keep the native res the whole way and you won't even have to reposition the alpha freezes.

I'm thinking the parts where they slowed the motion down, they then marked out several frames, created still images from the frames, then imported the stills into photoshop where they removed the backgrounds and added chroma green. they then imported the still back into the NLE. each still frame as a new video layer, set back to start at thier original frames with durations that allowed them to overlap for the entire slow motion clip.

I don't know If I've explained it clearly, but I think I could replicate it.

BTW it certainly IS possible, if one person can do it, so can another! ;0)

There may be a plug in to do this, and it would certainly be easier if the camera was stationary but without actually having done this (and someone will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure):

At first glance, in Vegas, I would save the several frames I wanted to freeze, rotoscope to isolate the person, place each "still" on a separate track with one track as a parent for motion control to match up with the camera motion and voila. The hardest part will be the motion control.

Luis,

Yeah, you'd have to color correct for each scene as there are always subtle changes in lighting even if for some reason all your camera settings are the same. However, with so simple a method it wouldn't be that much extra work. Besides, once you've color corrected your shots prior to dropping them into the timeline in Premiere or whatever, that part is done until you get a final cut and then start in with color grading if required. Just do all the shots for your scenes in batches. Since with the frame reference from each scene the thing that would take the longest would be making your adjustments in Phoshop.

Thanks for sharing such a great tutorial Wolfgang. That method of importing a frame to Photoshop is brilliant, I didn't knew that. One question I have, do I need to separately CC each different scene or will one pre-made CC preset will work on any scene no matter how it change? For example, in scene 1 I have an exterior then I cut to scene 2 which is an interior, will the CC preset I made, using the exterior footage as a reference, will also CC accurately the interior scene?

Between Apple Color and Magic Bullet Looks, lot's of editors are confusing Color Grading with Color Correction. The difference is; CG is a visual enhancement and CC is an adjustment for accuracy. So the 'Neo Green' from the "Matrix" and the 'Sepia Wash' prevalent in "Saving Private Ryan" are color grading choices for artistic enhancement of those films.

When doing color correction the editor adjusts highlights, midtones and shadow areas thus recreating the scene as the eye saw it. Here's a vid by Michael DeVowe using a simpler method for color correcting your video in AFX CS using Photoshop.

I've been using what was Serious Magic and is now Adobe Visual Communicator and Ultra for a couple of years now to produce Friday morning news shows in green screen methods for my Digital Media Tech class...extremely easy to use and well worth the price...should be better supported by Adobe for school use imho...you can probably download trial versions of both...Ultra often comes with the Master Collection...not sure why VC doesn't...students can produce great stuff in ten minutes with no problems, minimal light concerns, etc. Just wish I knew what older program Serious Magic used to create their virtual sets for Ultra so we could produce our own, tho we've put video behind actors using VC and it worked ok...lots of fun!!!

I agree. Lose the music and record your voice. Talking allows you to ramble and explain more about what you're doing and why you chose to take the steps you're taking, which is something captions don't do because people don't want to type or read that much.

The video itself is good and has pretty good quality - at least for YouTube.

The music in the first video is very distracting - I'd either have nothing or something soothing.

I also personally prefer a voice to walk me through what is going on.

It makes it more personal and interesting.

Good job.

 Yes...

Â

I'm saying that one because for example, I know what the settings are that I work with and use and I have an idea about the other settings but that's pretty much it (as I have no formal video editing training)...

hmm...I've never heard of that happening with a Quicktime File before. Maybe he needed to update the version of Quicktime player. I'll look into it.

Also, when you say A/V settings. Do you mean all that stuff in the dialogue box when you go to Final Cut Pro>Audio/Video Settings in the menu bar? If, I can do that too.Â
