Hello all; Long time no post. I have had a life changeover so to speak. My parents at law are aging and along with that comes changes with all lives that are in orbit.

Anyway my 22nd anniversary is up and coming (I am getting the wife her first "real" camera. It seems I have peaked her interest.) Anyway she asked what I wanted and I need a tripod replacement. I currently use a Ravelli AVT, but I have had to have done something serious to it in the last two years because the pan is rough now. I have disassembled it and put lithium grease in the internal, it did help but is sticks really bad.

So when the wife asked me what I wanted a tripod came to mind. However I need to keep the budget real, under $300.00 with tax, but I do not want something so-and-so looks up and reads the reviews, I have come to trust many here at their "real experience" word. So based on what you use and have experience with what do you suggest? I am using a Canon Vixia HF21 and when I shoot in 24FPS I need this thing to be smooth as silk. It is a heavier camera as it has an aluminum body, but it is still light.

So suggest and post links away. I would like to buy it through B&H if I can (Account there).

So there it is.

Thanks

I recently purchased a Canon XA10 HD camcorder that will be used to record indoor basketball games. I looking for recommendations for a tripod, fluid head, and zoom lens controller for this camera and this application. I don't want to spend more than a few hundred dollars.

I already have a nice tripod for my camera. (And my camera weighs a lot more than my camcorder.) Can I just buy a fluid head and the controller, or is there something different about tripods designed for video cameras?

Thanks in advance for your specific recommendations. Charles.

Hi All!

This day next week I'll be flying from London to NY, then to LA, Hong Kong, Athens, Rome, Paris and Geneva to shoot a doc.

I'm hoping to just bring all my gear in a carry no case. My only issue is whether security will confiscate my video stabilizer, see here: opteka.com/svex.aspx and a small tripod.
One of the airlines said there would be no problem as long as it fits in case, but my fear lies with security.

Does anyone have any experience carrying stabilissers/tripods on a plane and/or know anything about the security at any of the airports above?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Sorry for the likely stupid question, but I've searched and search and can't find any info... Have a new fluid drag head I'd like to mount to my tripod legs, but I don't see how. I've tried searching to see what different types of tripods/mounts there are, but find no mention of different types.

Here's a photo pf the head and the legs. Can someone shed some light? Can I attach them? Is there an adapter? Do I need different legs? If so, what are they called?

Thanks for any help you can give... ~Alex

I've dropped a couple of vids which show innovative ways to use your tripod to get shots beyond the standard 'Stand and Pan', 'Stand and Tilt'. Here's Derek Beck with some 'Tripod Tricks' to add to the list of thing you can do with your tripod from dramatic tilt zooms to using your 'pod as a steadycam rig.

One of things tripods are always missing when you buy them is a means of horizontal movement. Either you have to buy or build a set of stable wheels for your 'pod or get an elaborate dolly setup with tracks and so on. Here's a concept by Justin Jensen of 'Cinetics' and his innovative compact version of a wheeled tripod.

Hi all. I am starting out as a proffesional videographer.

I have just purchased a Canon 27D with a 17-55 mm 2.8 lens.

Now I need a decent tripod.

Obviously starting with a low budget but i want something decent.

I also want to start working with cranes pretty soon.

So I need a tripod to support a crane system.

I had my eye on the Kessler cranes and Kessler says th only crane they recomend to use with anything other than there expensive hurculees head is the kesser lite crane.

So that brings me back to tripods. Which one would you all recomend?

I thought maybe this one http://vimeo.com/10903579 but I just saw one used for sale on ebay and the seller said it didnt suit his proffesional needs.

With so much out there isn't there a popular model that most people are using?

Cheers.

I'm looking for a recommendation on a light weight backpacking video tripod. I'm an avid backpacker and go out west to hike in the mountains for days at a time. My pack weights anywhere from 35 to 55 pounds. I have a light weight (1 pound) Panasonic TM700 video camera which I use on these trips. I would love the stability of a tripod, but can't afford the weight of a full sized tripod.
Is there anyone out there who does similar activities and has discovered a rugged light weight tripod that you can carry with all your other gear? I'm willing to spend the money necessary for composite or light weight metal legs and a half decent video head, but there are so many choices that it's difficult to choose. Having a personal recommendation would really help. Thank you in advance.
Dave Socky

Light- I am only 5'2 and 119 lbs.

Not cumbersome- I did a video home tour today and almost knocked over a lamp because I needed to move the tripod and the one I have takes a muscle man to set up and tear down.

Up to $550

Center post as well as adjustable head (the self leveling type like the 501 HDV Manfrotto, but I also like a center post but not sure if it's an either/or..I would like people's input on this. Which is better? )

Using mostly for weddings and home video tours so I am moving around a lot

I like a spreader bar, but would also like opinions on that also

Camcorder is a prosumer Sony. model #DCR-VX2000

A Simple Shoulder
Stabilizer

Stabilizing a small camcorder can be a challenge. You can
use a tripod if your subject is stationary, but a tripod is cumbersome and you
loose the flexibility to follow action. Hand held gives flexibility, but often
results in shaky video.

I have solved this problem by attaching a small tripod as
shown below.

Here the tripod is attached to my Canon Vixia HF11. The legs
are aligned along the base and held together with a rubber foot leaving just
enough room between the tripod and the camcorder for my left hand.

I hold the camcorder with my left hand with my forearm
crossing in front of my body, my upper left arm against my body and the rubber
foot pressed against my right shoulder as shown below.

This leaves my right hand free to control the record button and zoom lever.

Stabilization comes from the triangle formed by my left
forearm, my upper body and the tripod against my right shoulder. Because my
forearm crosses my body it is angled away from vertical in the horizontal
side-to-side direction so this triangle provides both horizontal side-to-side and
vertical stability.

When you hold a camcorder with your right hand, as is
usually done, your right forearm is vertical in the horizontal side-to-side
direction so you do not get the side-to-side stability that you get from
holding it with your left hand as I do here.

I also have a good view of the LCD screen.

Here is a link to a video I shot using this stabilizer. If you listen carefully after about 25 seconds you competitive types can hear some valuable advice.

I'm working with a theatre to video their original productions (no copyright issues) in their lightbooth. The problem is they only have a space big enough for one tripod. I'd like to do a two-camera shoot: one full-stage and the other zooming to CUs. I was wondering if there was a tripbod head or config somewhere that allowed two cameras to be mounted (and seperately rotated) on one tripod. Any brainstorming would be appreciated.

There are constant cries on the forum from new and intermediate videographers for info on whether they need expensive upgrades of equipment to get 'high quality video'. The answers from the advanced members and moderators always stress, 'master the tools you have first then move up'. Many times that answer meets the satisfaction of the member asking the question but sometimes I can tell it's not 100%.

So for you shooters using small consumer grade cameras now feeling 'big camera envy', don't. Cameras are tools and just like a mechanic wouldn't use a screwdriver to fix everything on a car, cameras are similar. In my experience I've used the 'right camera for the time'. Depending on the setting, it was a big 3CCD camera with pro lenses or a small handheld rig with alternate lenses and a lens adapter.

Even if all you have is a small prosumer rig, you're still in good shape to get excellent footage if you a) have a solid grip on your camera's basic functions (exposure, focus, white balance, audio), b) understand the basics of composition (rule of thirds, depth of field), c) shot framing (wide shot, medium shot, etc.) screen direction and the 180 degree rule.

Where you start adding to your video's production values once you have a grip on the basics is adding camera movements like; pan, tilt, dolly, crane, etc. Again, you don't need to spend your life savings to be able to do those things. In fact you may already have the equipment to do all of the things I just mentioned if you have a small tripod and or monopod. Here's a video by Jan Van Der Meer (no not the famous 17th Century painter) as he shows some ridiculously simple techniques for getting advanced looking camera moves using a small monopod and a small tripod.

I am looking for a tripod suggestion for my DCR VX2000 Sony. I need something smooth for pan and tilt shots. As well as lightweight..I am only 5'2 and not very strong :)

Is there a decent tripod out there for around $250???

I mostly need it for weddings. I move around a lot when I am shooting so it has to be easily portable.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, so i got this new tripod, awesome, sturdy carbon fiber legs with rubber feet and spikes. I love it. except the head is crap. I spent a fortune on this tripod that "claimed" to be a fluid head, but from where i stand, its not, and will never be in a million years.

Soooo

I was wondering if i could buy a fluid head and just pop it on top of my fancy carbon fiber tripod. I know that you can replace the head because i have taken it off before. but now im wondering if i can just buy a new tripod head like the Manfrotto 701HDV compact fluid head and just screw it on there or is it more complicated than that?

Looking for tripod that I can use this winter for filming.

Ideally it would be lightweight (I do a lot of backcountry and would prefer to not have a huge heavy setup), smooth pan and tilt are a must (especially in cold weather).

Any specific recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I've looked through B&H but I'm hoping someone here has had some experience using tripods in very cold weather.

With the cold weather my last tripods legs would freeze up making it impossible to fold them up.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all ... (my first post here)

I am looking to purchase a "Dolica MT-750 Video Tripod with Disc Brake Fluid Head", but cannot find a single review on this product anywhere online. Does anyone use one and would you recommend it? If so, can you tell me about the gear you mount on it?

I use a Pani-AG-HMC70 shoulder cam that weighs close to 9 lbs. fully loaded. I've been using a Velbon 607 which is rated at 15lbs., but it shakes and shivers when my Pani is mounted on it. Looking for a good replacement at a moderate price.

What I want is a video (specif) tripod that has multi-leg braces and does not have a rising neck. I need it to be solid and sturdy, but under or around $300. I also mount a 6-1/2 foot boom pole to the camera and tripod when shooting my on-screen talent by myself.

Thanks in advance!
--Kevin

I couldn't think of a better title but hopefully this will suffice. I read Videomaker religiously as one of only two magazines that I never miss a month. The other is HD Video Pro. The stuff I notice in all of the magazines are ads and review guides about all kinds of accessories for cameras. My problem is that this dilutes the market and it makes it very hard to know what are accessories and what are add-ons. Things like mate boxes, add-on batteries, dollies, lights, twelve mics, 87 filters, rail systems, etc. It all just seems so daunting. What accessories are needed and which ones are just supperlative?

I currently use a JVC GY-HD110u with a tripod, dolly, extra mic and XLR cable, and a three light kit. Am I missing out on something that would really set me to the next level, or am I still beign held back only by my skill? I don't usually post general noob Q's like this but I just can't figure out who would need all of that stuff.

Hi,

I'm doing a school-related science experiment involving how steady a camera is under certain conditons. I need to find a way to measure how steady the camera is though. Is there any kind of software that you put the video into or a something i can attach to the camera. During the experiment the camera will be attached to a a tripod and in a controlled enviorment. I have talked to someone in the filming field and she said that there is a way, but she couldn't remember how. Does anyone have any suggestons?

I know about the cons of using an umbrella attached to your tripod (wind, etc.), but I feel at times it would come in really handy. Over the weekend I was doing a baseball game in the middle of the afternoon and really could have used it for shade. A couple of weeks ago it would have been useful for a light rain.

Anyway, does any one know of such an animal, preferably with a flexible shaft? I found this one; http://www.amazon.com/Probrella-Portable-Compact-Umbrella-Digital/dp/B000JQSCRI, but it is only big enough to cover the camera.

So I'm looking into getting a new tripod and as everyone knows, fluid head is the way to go.

The problem is, I don't know much about fluid heads, so I'm getting confused by some of the technical details.  The camera that will mainly be used is a Sony VX2000 with Beachtex XLR adapter (microphone will be on a boom, not connected to the camera), so nothing too heavy.  Do I go with a head that can support around 6-8 pounds, or is it better to go with something that can support 20 pounds to help keep pans and tilts smooth?

What about fluid-head types?  I see some say 2-way fluid head, others say 3-way fluid head, etc.  Is there a significant difference in these?  What's the advantage of a 3-way over a 2-way?

What about arms?  I see some tripods have a single arm, some have dual arms, some have angled arms while others have straight arms.  My guess would be this all comes down to preference, but are there any subtle advantages to one arm style over another?

Also, tripod legs seem to be very important.  I see styles such as telescoping and "crutch" style.  It seems like people prefer the crutch style, but why?

Throughout my research it seems like Bogen and Arri are the best of the best?  What makes them so much better than others?

Here's the tough part- as with 90% of others out there, I'm on a fairly tight budget and would like to spend around $200 to $250 max.  I know that leaves me with only the entry-level fluid heads, but what would you guys recomend?  Are there any other features I need to look into that I don't know about?

Someone recomended this kit in another thread.  I don't think I really need the dolly, but it might be useful (or it might be a piece of junk)?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/243272-REG/Davis_Sanford_PROVISTA7518_Pro_Vista_Tripod_with.html

Ok, so I realized that a standard tripod will not do. I what to get a fluid head tripod. I have been looking around but not sure at what point the true fluid head tripods begin at all of these store because some have mantioned on here that not all fluid heads are "True" fluid heads. So far I have found the following heads and sticks:

Heads: Bogen 3066, Bogen 502, Bogen 503HDV, What other makes and models are good, what would you recommend?

Sticks: Bogen 3182, Bogen 3283B, Bogen 351MVB, What other makes and models are good, what would you recommend?

Thanks for the help. I am looking for very smooth tilt and pan. I want a head and tripod that I can grow into. Will be doing both indoor and outdoor shooting.
