There are two ways I have done this: One editor I use allows me to play the clip* at an accelerated frame rate and render the video at that pace; the other editor actually has a "time-lapse" feature that grabs the frames at the interval you specify and then assembles them into a new video clip.

* The original clip was recorded continuously.

I have two main cameras I carry with me on the aircraft in a pelican hard case - everything else goes checked baggage in hard cases. I also carry a backpack with laptop, a shirt change, phone charger and a few other essentials. I learned the hard way when I went to Australia and Untied Airlines lost the bags for almost a week - I had to buy a new camera the first day, rent a backup camera for the remainder of the week, buy clothes etc in order to get through the first week. Fortunately, I was able to pick up a backup camera to use or I would have been out of luck - no work no pay.

Several people I know FEDEX their gear from place to place which seems to work for them. I have never tried it but I did use FEDEX once to send all my gear home on my way back from a job in Brazil.

Good Luck.

If you have time to do a little advanced research, you can probably find convenient places in each city to rent whatever equipment you need. We've done that several times in the U.S. and gotten first-rate equipment at very reasonable prices. Not sure how it will work out of the U.S., but it's worth investigating. It will save you a great deal of hassle going through security checks.

And, as Earl recounts, the odd of things getting beat-up and/or stolen in checked baggage are very very high. Since you can no longer lock checked baggage the pilfer rate has climbed steadily.

Be sure to check on how many carry on items are allowed on each flight. We had to repack on the lobby floor Heathrow Terminal because flights leaving London only permitted a single carry on item; your laptop, or a purse were considered an "item." If you have camera and gear bags as well as an over-nighter or laptop you may find yourself in trouble.

I have a hard case for my BIG Bogen/Manfrotto tripod, and I used to have a SteadyCam JR with a carrying case. The PROBLEM wasn't getting through security, it was being able to use these as "carry on" items. With RARE exception I was compelled to check them in. The cases both wound up showing the 300-pound Gorilla effect due to severe handling, but the equipment was relatively unharmed thanks to the quality of the HARD cases.

I have occasionally been allowed to carry on with them, storing the cases in an area that is at the front entrance of the plane, where the first class passengers usually hang their suit or garment bags. Those days, I think, are long gone, and probably even the premiums charged today wouldn't make it better for you. I've not traveled in the past 8 months to know what the current climate is like with security, but your camera support equipment shouldn't be listed on the not allowed list.

A quick check via Google for current security and carry on, even check-in items lists, limitations should be fruitful. Good luck.

Hi All!

This day next week I'll be flying from London to NY, then to LA, Hong Kong, Athens, Rome, Paris and Geneva to shoot a doc.

I'm hoping to just bring all my gear in a carry no case. My only issue is whether security will confiscate my video stabilizer, see here: opteka.com/svex.aspx and a small tripod.
One of the airlines said there would be no problem as long as it fits in case, but my fear lies with security.

Does anyone have any experience carrying stabilissers/tripods on a plane and/or know anything about the security at any of the airports above?

Any help would be much appreciated!

I watched the first one you posted and it was not too bad. I personally would have had the music playing in the background the whole time and when she was talking I would have turned it down a touch. There were a few places where you had some very quick shots that seemed out of place that were distracting from the whole story. About the 2:22 mark you had maybe a second of her changing tables with music then cut to something else. Prior to that you had a shot of chair legs, cut those. When she was talking about Salsa dancing, you could have shot a little bit of that type of dancing.

The video was not horrible, just could have been edited a little differently. Keep shooting.

I normally charge mileage and what's considered to be reasonable and customary expenses (hotel etc). I never charge for actual travel time (driving to and from) within the US (at least not yet). I charge a base fee when traveling outside the US (i.e. it took 32 hours to get to Australia which the customer agreed to pay 16 hours of my day rate during travel time and they covered the plane tickets).

I am based in Florida and travel throughout the east coast (NY to Miami) and just recently was out in OK to shoot some high school football.

Charles,

Your best bet is to charge the standard US Government mileage rates for travel via ground or air transportation. Some outfits give a discount of the first 50-100 miles to regular customers as an incentive. Check out the current mileage rates at:

I have been asked to provide a quote to shoot a commercial in Louisiana which is 850 miles away and I will drive there so I can take all my gear. My question is, how much should I charge for travel and the time to do so? I don't want to over charge and not get the gig but I do not want to cut myself short either.

Hey everyone,

I just made a new episode about Perhentian Islands, and this time this is
about discovering a local fishermen village. I tried to developp the
"documentary" aspect with an off-screen voice more present, but editing
sound still remains difficult for me...!

Hi everyone,

My name is Florian, I'm 21, I'm new here and I'm am found of video (from
shooting to editing). I'm not good enough to become a director I think,
but I practice video at my own level and take a huge pleasure in doing
this.

I have just created a kind of web-tv about a six month trip in East
Asia. On this website, you can follow trips, portraits, cities, clips,
places, parties, etc...

http://www.asiantriptv.com

I hope you will enjoy it !

You can see here one of the videos, this is the portrait of a young indonesian girl shot in Singapore, also student at Harvard.

http://vimeo.com/26861400

Any feedback is welcomed and will help me a lot in my project.

See you soon

love the edit and also the soundtrack. I liked how you synced the images with the song in the very beginning. Where did you get that song? I was trying to find it on iTunes store but there was no results found...

theres no story. its just an edited compilation of shots from an extended trip to music. i wasn't trying to tell the story of the trip, just show the best sights from it.

If all you wanted to do was learn how to use FCS, it looks like you're on the right track. Learning how to make your cuts and transitions is a way to get familiar with you software.

The next level that becomes more difficult is learning when to use certain transitions and cuts. Just because it is available in your software does not mean you have to use it. It can be hard to follow if the video appears to be nothing but random cuts and transitions. It all depends on what you are trying to tell/show your viewer.

In reviewing your video I found some of the transitions confusing because the images did not appear to go together. This is important if you are trying to tell a story with your video. You had wonderful images and shots in the video but I had a very hard time trying to "follow" your story.

@tonyp Mainly I put in a lot of hours just messing around and trying things. I watch alot of tutorials also, on sites like creativecow.com and finalcutking.com, there are alot good free tutorials. I was also just recently told about lynda.com and I plan on checking them out also. I think a good way to learn is to just put clips on your timeline and spend time just going through all the effects, transitions, etc and just trying them on your clips, mess around and learn. Like taking apart a bike and putting it back together again it helps you get to know what all those parts of the machine are. I like to watch alot of video with good editing and get ideas and inspiration from that too. A combination of all those things I guess.

Tony, one of the best resources (there are several, but ...) for affordable instruction on FCP is Lynda.com check it out. Another neat place to visit for informative snippets of FCP info is on Twitter, thedvshow good places to start your journey.

@hogwild Thanks alot. I shot with a Canon HV30. No lights or anything, all natural lighting (minus some brightness and contrast modifications during the edit). I shot handheld and with a tripod. The rodeo clips were handheld. That rodeo fiesta was in Costa Rica, pretty crazy, sat right on the ring fence, up close and personal. Glad you liked it, thanks for posting. -dan

I enjoyed the video a lot. I liked the last shot also, made me chuckle out loud. I didn't mind the amount of effects as they were executed well in my opinion and didn't look gawdy (not that anyone said they did, just making a point) so I didn't feel like it took away from the video.

I'd be interested to know what equipment you used to capture the footage...camera, lenses, lights, tripod/monopod or predominately hand held?

Just watched the video again and the shot @ 2:17 where the guy is on the bull and he screams & the bull starts jumping is great. For some reason I find it fascinating....lol

Great video!

thanks. appreciate the feedback. ya i negotiated the length of that clip in my head as well so i agree that that could be a possible change. when you say too many effects do you mean like too much color modification? too many effects? just curious. thanks.
