Just thought I would chime in here. Depending on the job, I switch between FCP on my MacBookPro, Premiere Pro on either the MacBook or my PC and on simple projects, Sony Vegas Pro on my old PC desktop, which gives faster access to a lot of features and a very good integrated audio toolset without having to use an external audio editor.

I just finished a project where I captured live video into FCP through a Matrox MX02 Mini, did my rough cuts on FCP, exported the .mov files and continued the edits in Premiere CS5.5 (Which I am transitioning over to) The Matrox box doesn't (yet) import directly into Premiere. There are a lot of fanboys who will extol the virtues of one NLE over another. To me they are tools in the box. My Craftsman roll-around has a LOT of screwdrivers... You use what will give you the best results for the job at hand.

Because apple discontinued FCP, I see no reason to learn it now. It'd not hurt you any... I just don't see it helping you either. Bottom line, if it's free, go at least learn some mac tricks. If it's not, save your money and do some online tutorials for the tools you'll be using.

i suspect what you learn in final cut pro will translate to premiere pro

i started with pinnacle studio and made the transition to premiere pro quite easily, i found it pretty easy to use

i think you'll have a harder time figuring out the differences between the mac operating system and the PC operating systems, but if you're familiar with PC's that should be no problem in the end. that's just my two cents.

good luck!

So i'm trying to become a Video Editing Professional in Africa.
In my country, Apple Mac's are very expensive, and hard to come by.
It's all about PCs where I come from.
Now the NY Film School is doing dome training programme for folks in Nigeria, and I have chosen to take training in Video Editing.

The problem is the training will be done on the Final Cut Pro software which requires the use of Macs. So my fear is that at the end of the training, if I don't have a Mac, I would need to continue my training with some other software, like Adobe Premiere. So my question now is, are the differences in FCP and AP so much that I shouldn't bother with Final Cut Pro at all???

JAM,

Get yourself a copy of "The Little Digital Video Book" 2nd Edition by Michael Rubin. It will help with about 65% of the heavy lifting you'll need to do learning how to use a video camera (and it's in plain Englese'.) Now it won't explain the more advanced controls of your pro camera but it will give you the basics of how a camera works and what to do with one.

I just took a look at the specs on your rig and unless you plan on going into business or shooting your own film festival quality short or feature films, I advise you sell it and get something 'beginner friendly.' XTR wasn't kidding about a 'fiery start.' Look at it this way, would you put a teenager on their first day of training for their learner's permit behind the wheel of your brand new Nissan 350Z twin turbo-charged convertible?

Not saying that you aren't 'smart enough' to learn how to use it, but it's going to be one mighty heavy lift and the odds you'll grow frustrated and put it on a shelf somewhere to collect dust are pretty high.

Nothing I can tell you here, but "that's how it is" with that kind of stuff. Too many times I've gotten over-excited about a 1/4" thick manual consisting of camcorder information and get merely 1/10 of it in English. This is the best thing I know of that tells you everything, word for word, for a beginner.

In the forums we get lots of questions on how to do something from shooting to post work. Often videos depicting the process of doing said thing are posted to help illustrate answers. It is not uncommon though that many of those training videos lack key elements which make a DIY video both informative and interesting.

Multiple views including; close-ups and angle changes

Adequate lighting on subject

Text to back up spoken points

Though there are no spoken words in the DIY video "How to Create Super Macro Lens" by Lozzless, there was a good deal of thought and effort put into this. Though far from perfect, it's a pretty good example of how to put together elements for your training videos. Note: I by no means endorse the methods used in the video for modifying a camera lens, just the way the video was put together.

How to create SuperMacro lens (??? ??????? ?????????? ????????) from lozzless on Vimeo.

Hi there,

I have to create a training video whihc will have an actor speaking about the course, then goes and comes the screen simulations and this continues. What will the best approach for making such things?

Do we author it on dvd? Screen simulations are screenshots of softwares made from Camtasia or Adobe Captivate. What should be done to retain the readability of software screens?

short and sweet:
1. A good camera for the format you are delivering in (standard or high def)
2. A good fluid head on top of a good set of tripod legs.
3. Background drop material unless you want to look at the walls
4. 1 good light source
5. wireless mic or a shotgun mic on a stand
6. if you are going to edit these, you need to decide on platform before you make your choice on software. Mac > Final Cut PC > Adobe, Sony Vegas....... this list goes on.
7. time and patience.

If shooting film, you'll ned to iron out telecine costs before taking another step. Sounds like shooting video would be just fine in your case. Your gear requirements revolve around your needs. SD? HD? Do you really need make up artists? Can a simple 3 point light kit not do?
My thought is you are not quite ready for the overhead/risk. Staffing for some years to gain experience and contacts, the freelancing to home business skills would help wonders and limit much risk and frustration.
That said, if it helps, I shoot mainly with a Sony FX-1 with Cartoni support, Lowel lighting and just a few required mics and I post in an Avid Adrenaline suite with BCC AVX, Genarts Sapphire effects, After Effects and Photoshop, authoring with Avid DVDit when needed. I master mainly to Beta SP.

Hi there! My company is looking to set up a video studio. Nothing crazy but to use a storage room to film incoming executives for training videos-talking heads mainly. What type of equipment would we need? Around how much would it cost? And does anyone have recommendations for products? I loved to know EVERYTHING we might need--from makeup brushes to lighting. Also, we would like it if we could take the camera and lighting out to conventions.

We would send staff to learn to film and one of our staff members already edits video on her mac laptop using Final Cut or imovie for simple edits.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

What is taught in a classroom is worthwhile. However, there is no substitute for experience. Getting out there and shooting - before, during and after classwork - can be invaluable.

Before - If nothing else, you'll have intelligent questions for your professors.

During - Class assignments and such - as you learn new techniques, tips & tricks.

After - Knowledge & Skills, as in many things - If you don't use it, you lose it! Like how you get to Carnegie Hall...

Sounds like you are around the Atlanta area but if you didn't mind moving further south you could do a lot worse than look into the Savannah College of Art and Design. It's more traditional in that there's coursework, but there's a very active filmmaking department, seems like there's a road blocked off in Savannah or even as far up as Statesboro all the time for film shoots.

The courses can be expensive, but fortunately living expenses in this part of the state are pretty reasonable and you could wind up with a respected degree in video and film from a school that prides itself on keeping up with the latest technology for the field.

Otherwise you could do like me and read everything you can get your hands on, study other people's lighting and shooting techniques, and follow some of the blogs from people on this site. And mainly get out and shoot and study your shots. Unless you're an unreasonable sort you'll see what you're doing wrong and get it straightened out.

I wish the equipment and resources had been available that we have now when I was young and single. You're getting started at a great time!

Hello :)

So i think i most likely would like to attend school some type of school/training facility with up to date equipment and it would be great if they allow students to lease out equipment... I am in Georgia and i know of two schools Ga State and Chattahoche Tech... I am not "stuck" in GA i really want to get out of here i am young no children nothing holding me back and i will go as far as canada for the best/least expensive training... Can you suggest some great schools? I would prefer not to do a 4 year program or a 2 year that requires general coursework... thank you so much :)

You can look at VTC Computer software training. They have hundreds of tutorials and several of Vegas. I learn Vegas Pro with an 8 hours video tutorial, a lot of patience and with the strong determination that I wanted to learn to edit videos professionally. About the workshops, why not created a "fictional workshop" like I did. I took my video camera and record me in three different angles, in the same place, and doing something different on every angle. Then I went to Vegas to make three clones of me. This was horrible, frustrating, time consuming (Weeks doing a 2.5 min video) but in the end I learn how to use Vegas. If you really want to learn make challenge for yourself and like Birdcat said "As a rule, read all you can"

Composite1 is dead on about VASST - They are very good and have stellar software as well as training.

You can also go through the archives (if you have enough time) of the official Sony Vegas forums (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/default.asp). Some folks there are less than tolerant of newbies (I've been flamed before) but most are very helpful (including folks like Douglas Spotted Eagle, John Rofrano, many others).

There is also Ed Troxel's forum (Ed is the author of Excalibur) - http://www.jetdv.com/vegas/forum/index.php - Ed also has how-to newsletters on the site.

As a rule, read all you can - I'd probably stay away from the YouTube based tutorials as I have found some that are just plain wrong (or more annoying than me at the very least). The forums here plus the ones I mentioned will give you a good background.

Bow,

Take a look at VASST for training DVD's and stuff like that. For local training, check with your local college/university and the Oklahoma State Film Commission for more info.
