think of all the folks who just wanna dial in one room noise and delete it. They spend hours with a parmentric eq to find it then find success. (whew)

Then think of all the different frequences in a vocal track mixed with everything else. I've been mixing sound since the early 80s. If deleting one thing (or millions of things in this case) on a mixed track were easy, we'd have no need for music libraries or composers.

There are many times I would like to use a snippet of an instrumental version of a song but don't have access to it (I have many karaoke CD's for this reason). This will make that task a whole lot easier. Won't work for all songs and certainly not as a solo, but for background under narration this will do well.

Kind of like removing the smell from a ...a...a...wet dog, yeah a wet dog. You can put an air freashener between you and the dog, likely smell roses first but the smell is still going to linger.

I just tried the Audacity solution on Aerosmith's Dream On - I am amazed!

It worked just like the video showed and very well - I will be using this technique in the future.

so, how do I go about doing this, I've tried what you told me, but nothing happens, what EXACT effects do I have to use in Premiere Pro to get this effect and is there videos out there that go in depth about frequency ranges and band pass filters

Sound Forge Audio Studio (about $65) claims to be able to do this.

Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 software includes the Vocal Eraser plug-in. Easily remove vocals from most recordings, or isolate and extract vocal tracks from songs for remixing. The Vocal Eraser plug-in contains presets for various genres and vocal types.

I am unfamiliar with the above song, but I have read that it is possible to remove or greatly reduce the vocal of a song if:

- You have a high quality stereo version

- The solo is in the center so it appears equally on both channels

You restrict the frequency range of one channel as much as possible to that of the vocal using band pass filter(s). You then phase invert one of the channels and add them together. The idea is the phase-inverted vocals in both channels cancel each other leaving the music.

I believe this is a lot easier said than done. I have never done it personally, but I have accidentally removed the soloist by combining stereo channels into one mono channel in the early days when recordists were less careful about center channel phasing.

An easier way is to find a karaoke version of the song. Jaimie

hello there, I was wondering if I could remove vocals from a trailer song, now before you tell me, it's not possible, well, this guy on youtube called TheScriptTV did it, an example is below

Rise of the planet of the apes trailer music

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udeMxU6wymg

so I emailed him and asked how he did, he was not keen on revealing on how he did it, but said he used Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and bypassed the vocals, not REMOVED, but bypassed, and yet he removed the vocals effectively and has the complete trailer song, does anyone know how he did this? I would appreciate any help anyone could give me

Using a dvd recorder is a very easy way to do it. If you want fancy menus and such, most of the software programs offer dvd authoring. I use Pinnacle 12 Ultimate and like the freedom for chapters it gives.

Birdcat-

I looked into those. But I transfer the usual assortment of camcorder tapes and VHS to DVD but I add menus and chapter stops, remove blank or distorted frames and enhance the audio. I am using a very basic VCR for VHS right now going through an analog cable connected to a DataVideo DAC-200. I would love to upgrade the VCR especially if the unit can also capture my DV tapes without adding hours to my cameras. I have heard that it is best to use the originating camera for capture but I am curious if anyone uses this type of deck for that as well.

If all you're looking to do is copy the VHS tapes to DVD without editing you could just buy a dual DVD/VHS recorder. I got one (a Sony) for about $160 and it has one button copying (as well as RCA inputs for external sources, like my old 8mm videocamera). Very simple for just copying to DVD.

Hey Rob,

Your JVC unit sends the VHS through the firewire cable? So does the unit have an analog to digital converter built in or does the firewire output cable connect to a converter before hitting the computer?

Also, do you use this to capture your DV footage to avoid wear and tear on your camera?

Thanks,

I have a JVC miniDV/VHS deck that has firewire. With that I am able to connect to Final Cut Pro and change the options in FCP to "non-controllable device". VHS is analog so it has to be set to "non-controllable device." From there I would press play on my deck and click on the "Capture Now" button to allow for real-time capture. Hopefully you have something like that in your program.

If you do not have a firewire deck you may need to purchase an RCA to firewire converter. You would connect the VCR to the converter with the RCA wires and then connect the converter to your computer with a Firewire. Â

Please help.

I want to copy all my old VHS tapes to DVDs and believe that I did do one about 6 years ago ago.

I'm not sure what video editing software I used as I had and still have Ulead VideoStudio 5 and Ulead VidoeStudio 6 SE DVD. It may have been Pinnacle Studio 8 borrowed from a friend. Also I've forgotten what connections I need from VHS recorder/player to my PC. IIRC I used a Scart adapter from the VHS player, maybe the SVHS connecter via cable lead to SVHS connecter on appropriate desktop PC's PCI card. Stupid me having lost the info about that PCI card. Guess I need to take it out of the PC, put a photo on the web and ask forum members their advice.
