It's been said that "necessity is the mother of all invention", and there's no better example than the skateboarding industry. At a time when little funding for their industry was available, they created magazines, artwork and videos with a DIY asthetic that would make Etsy.com proud. Today, if you've seen the film "Where the Wild Things Are" or caught that Chevy Sonic "car kickflip" ad during the super bowl, then you've seen firsthand what the action sports creative community has brought. Those two projects were directed by Spike Jonze and Ty Evans, respectively, who cut their teeth making skate videos.

Okay enough with the prelude. Here's a cool example of name titles placed onto video gear like cameras, memory cards and lighting equipment. Enjoy the creativity, care of those skateboarders you see cruising down the street:

I'm having no problems making quote marks. Are you sure you're not using a typeface that just doesn't have curled quote marks?

How do I get proper typographers quotes (curly quotes) in the PPCS4 Titler, instead of the inch marks it defaults to? I can use Alt0147 and Alt0148, but is there a tidier way? Is there somewhere an option (like in InDesign) to "use typographers quotes"?

I'd probably have to go with your first assessment on unauthorized software, but any future releases/upgrade detectors should be able to detect my previous version and authorize a free (or reduced price) upgrade. I'd also have to see that it will be a good long while before a newer version comes out. Most online Vegas Pro 9 sellers have their prices range within a couple hundred dollars of the retail value.

It definitely sounds like you've purchased unauthorized (I.E., "warez") software. You just won't be able to use it to upgrade to the next release.

I've successfully entered the serial number, but still lacking the registration process. Everytime I start the program, I am guided through an "online" registration process and get a message that the software is unable to connect to the server. When I attempt the same process through the Help menu while Vegas is running, the registration appears to complete successfully. Every time now I restart Vegas, I am forced to complete (or cancel) the registration process before the program will start.

[UPDATE] I'm seemingly able to resolve only while I'm writing this post. After a few more tries of registering. and continuous "Retries" trying to connect to the server, I was briefly instructed to enter the authentication code. After completing the authentication code once and twice again, I am now able to start Vegas with everything... all included features and no more looping through registrations.

"I've never heard of Supersoftware.com, and worse yet, neither has ResellerRatings.com. Their price of $99 is too good to be true, and unlikely legitimate."

It did strike me suspicious at first glance, but looking over it, the looks of it were entirely professional. There were a number of hoops to jump through after purchase and download to get the software running. What became even more suspicious is that I was instructed to put in false registration names, and there was a product key generator with words in Russian. But other than that, the entire package looks fully accessible... haven't got to the part of installing DVD Architect/Sound Forge yet, though.

I have no idea what you have because everything you are lacking in your copy is in Vegas Pro 9. The only difference from the demo version and the full version is the serial number.

I've recently purchased the full version of Sony Vegas Pro 9 - got a great deal at supersoftwarestore.com. After finally getting the full version to run along with the 9.0c download (update) from Sony, the "Vegas Pro 9" part of the software package seemed to be intact.

A short while ago, I noticed the software lacking transitions, title options, and a number of media generator affects. Having edited previous projects with a Sony Vegas trial download, I am now unable to load those projects.

Could someone direct me with the apropriate download links to all of these essential add-ons, such as the ones that seem to be only trial-exclusive?

no, don't put a deinterlace filter on your graphics. In Photoshop, the deinterlace filter is for deleting black lines and replacing them with interpolated data. This is used when you export a still image from interlaced video and want to use that image is a graphic or something.

I'd suspect that is how it would work in Illustrator, although I've never seen that filter in that program.

cool guys! thanks for the help.. i'm semi new to illustrator and i didn't see or know where to find an illustrator template for video vector type. how do i select one?

and also... my titles look pretty good on tv.. just a little bit blurry barley(wish they were crystal clear). but if i put a de-interlace filter on my titles they will look better on something like a computer screen? i always wondered that.

Turkey,

Of the things that come to mind the two that stand out are:

Are you using Open Type fonts? These are compatible with Mac & PC systems but sometimes when you go to the 'upmteenthousand free font' site you get some fonts that aren't 100% up to specs for video.

Are you using Illustrator's templates for vector type intended for video? These take the guess work out of prepping your text. Also, you may be looking at your text on an interlaced monitor. Remember computer screens and LCD displays are mostly progressive scan. If you're looking at materials not prepped for interlaced video on an interlaced monitor (i.e. tv or camera) you're going to see blurry text.

If you can view the work on an LCD TV, you should be able to determine if it's a progressive scan issue or not. Also, like I mentioned it may be you used a cheapo font so I'd check how other fonts in your kit look as well.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the website and have found sooo much useful information on the forums section. Every time I have a problem I'm always relieved to find a solution here! Well this time I couldn't find an awnser and was looking for a little help..

I work for a skateboard company doing filming and video editing. I'm normally busy with skate video editing for web or dvd. Using Illustrator files for titles that normally fade in and out on top of my video while it plays. They always look fine on the web or on dvd's and t.v.'s..

But now they got me working on this sales video for all there sales representatives. It's just footage of people talking and giving information in front of the camera. And while they talk I fade in and out Illustrator (vector) files that pinpoint what they are talking about. Just a white background with black text..

But for some reason most of the smaller sized text and some pictures are blurry or fuzzy looking on the T.V. after I put it to DVD. Also when I watch it from my camera.

Anyone have any words of wisdom??? Or maybe just something simple I'm missing. I thought Vector files always looked good if you import them straight from Illustrator into Final Cut Pro? Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks - Surf Turkey

That's video editing. If you have to change the text then you have to create a new title.

You can copy the attributes of the title and save them as a preset. as long as the title is the same length every time you can then apply the preset and have your fade in and out automatically applied. There is a tutorial on presets at muvipix.com that would be good, not sure if it is free or not though.

Read up on saving presets, that should help.

**************************Â

The title template I use is basically a background banner with text on it that needs to be changed every time... Name captions...

PPro title function is doing a good job to make use of templates. However my titles need transitions every time, a fade in/out effect like TV captions, and I have to apply the effect manually every time.

Imagine having 20 titles in one sequence... That is 40 drag and drops...

You don't know what the title will be transitioning from/to, so how would you save the transition unless it was only one sided. If that is the case you can keyframe a fade in and/or fade out and save that with the title by exporting the video. You can save the title as a title file, but it won't have all of the keyframes or anything else along with it.

You can save a title in Premiere Elements with the menu option; File/Export/Title, not sure if it is the same in Pro and I don't have Pro on this computer to check.

Hi,

Is it possible to save a still title in PPro CS3 with certain transitions?

I use crossfade effect for name captions. Although I have a template for the title, I need to apply the effect manually every time to the beginning and end of the title...

It is time consuming if you are using the template over and over again...

So if I can save the title template with the transition already applied, this would make life easier...

Thanks for any thoughts...

 John,

Thanks for the help! I did finally figure out that the text needs to be above the video track. It's now working as I expected. I'm also playing with a text crawl across the bottom instead of scrolling credits and although I'm getting close, I'm having trouble controlling the speed and timing. I think a big problem is vocabulary. I found instructions in the help index on how to manipulate the crawl, but it assumes some degree of previous knowledge. For instance, "Drag your text block to the right edge of the frame in the workspace" is plain enough English, but which edge of the text block goes on the edge of the frame? I'm stumbling through and will eventually get it, but more thorough or fully explained steps would really help out a rank beginner like myself.

I guess intuition is a very subjective attribute because I'm still struggling. Perhaps my assessment will change after a bit more experience. But then I won't be drawing on intuition alone, will I? :) And I'm headed over to hetdv.com right now.

your text should be on the track above the video track

far from your observations, Vegas is very intuitive. Additionally, check out Ed Troxels newsletters on vegas, they start from Vegas 4 but all still apply to version 8. http://www.jetdv.com

Hello All,

This is my first post here and I hope my question isn't too dumb. I've been forced into a situation where I have to create some very simple videos to give a video tour of an apartment complex. I've never played with video editing at all and although I consider myself fairly computer literate, this one is really giving me fits. The software (Vegas 8) does not seem very intuitive at all and while I've gone through several tutorials, I can't seem to accomplish what I would expect to be VERY simple effects.

I've got some raw video and I just want to superimpose some text on it, but my results have been very hit or miss. I first used Generated Media, specifially the "Default Text" in the "Text" section. This item has a checkerboard background (which, according to the documentation) is supposed to be transparent. Instead, it yields a black background that totally covers the video. I then tried the "Credit Roll" series of generated media. The "Scrolling on Transparent" item worked once (at the very beginning of the video), but when I try to use it again later in the video, it's as if it's not even there. The video plays and no text is shown at all.

This really is a very humbling experience. I usually pick up new software with ease, but this one has me pulling my hair out. If anyone has any thoughts or hints, I'd love to hear them.
