This posting by David at timelapsehd.ca Have a look at their youtube channel full of stunning time lapse. http://www.youtube.com/user/TimeLapseHD

<span style="font-family: Verdana; color: #000000; font-size: 10pt;">

I would shoot it with these settings:

Use a tripod

Manual focus (very important)

Aperture priority (you don't want the F-stops changing the depth of field)

Auto White balance

ISO 200 (lower the better)

F5.6

With F5.6 and 200 ISO you will get long exposures at night to give
you the lines you want. I'm guessing you will only get about 3-5 second
exposures at night, longer if there aren't many lights.

Metering can be done 2 ways, full frame (over all average) or
spot. You can put the spot on a part of a building. Over all averages
works most of the time. The cars might throw off the metering. Take
test shots and review them before starting (check exposure and
focus). Try not to get the sun in the shot because it could throw off
the metering making everything too dark.

If you want to do it for 5 hours, I would suggest doing intervals
of 1 minute (300 frames, that's 10 seconds of video). It's better to
shoot more then you need. You can always speed it up in post or use the
best part of it. You might want to start 1.5 to 2 hours before sunset,
because with long exposures it will stay light in the sky longer than
you think.

Use RAW files because it's easier to fix in post. Make sure you
have a big enough memory card and batteries or power supply that will
last. Take the pictures in the highest resolution possible because you
can add effects in post, like zooms, pans and or tilts. I know you are
only doing a 5 second shot, but a slow zoom always looks good.

Good luck!

David

Sounds pretty intense. Sounds like you should do a test at some point before your shoot date just to get familiar with doing time lapse. Your only option to get both day and night in the same shot would be Aperture Priority I would think (I would keep it around f2.8 to maintain sharpness). That way during the day your shutter would skinny up to like 1/500th for bright sunlight and go down to 1-30second exposures for night time. I would also make sure the ISO doesn't go beyond 1600.

White balance I would set to something static like 5100 or so. If your shooting office building windows, I feel like it would be okay to see them a bit warm.

To figure out how long the timer should be you have to do a little math. If you want 5 seconds at 30fps, then you want a total of 150 frames. Now you divide the length of time you want to shoot by 150, and thats your interval. SO, say you want to shoot from 3pm to 8pm, thats 5 hours (300 minutes). Divide 300 by 150 frames = 2. So 1 frame every 2 minutes.

Really the best thing for you to do is a test. That way you can see how the motion is and what your interval should be and how it looks.

Goodluck

I have to shoot a time lapse sequence for a project Im doing, and would appreciate any help and advice.

The scene is an office block, and I need a time lapse of it going dark, and building becoming illuminated from within as the natural light fades. There is also a
busy main road in front of the building so during the night scenes
the car lights would look good if they become lines.

The problem is I have only one chance to shoot this, and because of the remote location, I cant check out light levels ahead of time.

Add to this, Iv never done this before.

The target product is a 5 second piece at 30 fps. If necessary this could be extended to 10 seconds max.

I will be shooting with either a Canon 1DMkIIN or a Canon 5dMkII

HELP !!!

Im looking for suggestions on all aspects ;
1) Exposure - as changing light Im guessing I will need to use either Aperture or Shutter Priority
2) White Balance - again, as changing im guessing this will be automatic
3) Interval

Any guidance you can give, gratefully received.

Thanks

@EarlC - about skies you right, I found out one thing, crystal clear skies with dramatic clouds you can find more in northern parts of our planet than southern. I live in Slovakia (Central Europe), used to live for some time in Cyprus (Mediterranean), but never before seen so clear and amazing skies as in Norway. It is prolly given by different angle to the Sun, but skies are in north amazing.

@vid-e-o-man - I used no special equipment, it was just Canon 5D Mk II with "set" lens 24-105 f/4 and Manfrotto tripod. No filters, nothing extra. Not even polarizer :)

Robert, great scenery, great video quality, sometimes less is more, no need to gild the lily, static shots present the subject beautifully. I wish it were longer, sad to see it end. I can't help but ask what equipment was used to get this great footage (camera, lens, filters, etc.)? Keep shooting.

Robert,

Awesome footage, awesome scenes, GREAT angles, interesting perspectives, and man I live in California and rarely see the beautiful skies and dramatic skies your footage depicts. What is cool also, is that your scenic production reminds me of the continued series of videos Reader's Digest put out years ago featuring classical music and scenery ranging from flora to fauna, etc. I always wanted to do some videos of a half-hour or longer of various elements of nature, geography, etc. and set them to classical pieces. Mostly, I want to do this for myself because occasionally, when I'm not pounding the keyboards or reading (or writing) and producing other video, I enjoy such "mood" videos as what you've done here. Beautiful footage that represents what your camera is capable of generating. Love it! Of course there's more you can do, but nothing is wrong with a minimal (FX and movement) approach when the subject matter is represented so beautifully. Nothing static about nature except possibly a glacier ;-) Enjoyed it, thanks for sharing.

Hi, this is my first video compilation, shared here (also my first post). Looking for any constructive criticism. Videos shot on Canon 5d Mk II and GoPro HD Hero. I know, there is lot of things to do with postproduction and editing (this is just simple cuts), but my concern is atm more on videos itself. Also I'm planning to get dolly soon, so now its just static videos, I hope I'll improve that soon. Thanks for wiewing and especially commenting :)

Michael,

Make sure whatever type of IVM you get, it has an 'on-off' switch. Also use rechargeable batteries. They last longer and you can reuse them. As for your camera battery life, most likely what will happen is your camera will go into 'standby mode' in between shot intervals. So you should get an extended amount of time on your battery vice it being on constantly. Don't turn off your camera thinking the IVM will do it for you! Turn your camera on and leave it on until you stop the shoot. Also, use some sort of weighted bag (sand, pellet or water) to hold your tripod around so it won't get moved by the wind. Make sure your 'pod is level. You do not want to try and level out several hundred or thousand photos, because you didn't level the frame.

Hey, I'm also a big fan of time laps. I've got Sony alpha100 and I'm considering to buy this intervalometer. What do you think about it? I dont want to spend too much money on that. And I also have a question. Usually when I use my camera in normal mode the battery life is about 2h constant on. If i'm using intervalometer does it saves energy between time when it takes pictures? That would be great but other way I can only shoot for 2h which is not so long for time laps....

They could have used a chart recorder that has been modified to perporm the panning which would have give a very smooth pan as they make one full cycle in a 24 hour period. They can be purchased on e-bay for rather inexpensively. Here is what one looks like http://www.instrumart.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=33337&gpe=1&ctype=2&gclid=CP70q7f9gKYCFQTrKgodIg0pnA All you would have to do is weld a plate of some form to the center pin and remove the pen device. Just an idea for doing on the cheap.

"You would also want to shoot on fully manual settings. If you shoot on
auto, changing light and varying distances from objects will ruin the
timelapse."

Rob,

That would be a yes and no. Yes on full auto that would be true. However, depending on lighting conditions (i.e. sunrise to sunset and reverse) you would want to use either aperture priority or shutter priority. Also, if there is any man-made lighting around or drastically changing lighting conditions AWB is also an auto setting which can be utilized. Full manual is great for day or night shots with fairly constant lighting.

Yes also to the motorized tripod/dolly setup and intervalometer/timer remote control for getting motion in your time-lapse scene. You can do it all manually (good luck with that) with an old school shutter release and a dolly track with the interval spacing marked off for you to move the rig during the time between the image processing. You'll have to be 'mechanically' proficient and move like clockwork for hours at a time to get a good run doing it all by hand.

Wow, very cool timelapses!

Here's my second timelapse test (the first one wasn't very good). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg2pR-4rTzw

I wouldn't quite go with 'jaw dropping', but those are some great TL's. Helps a lot to having an interval controlled dolly to get the sense of movement in the shots. Definitely adds to the production values. I'm currently on stand down because of cloudy conditions for tonight's lunar eclipse. Maybe tomorrow night.

Hey all, still doing work in DSLR Timelapse. Here's a how to vid from Director of Photography Phillip Bloom on DSLR TL's. He glosses over the topic and doesn't mention the 'oh by the way's' I ran into when taking my first steps into the mix. You can see them with the very first post in this thread. In the meantime, check out the vid;

"It amazes me how far we've come in so short a time..."

Bruce,

Thanks for the nod. The way the cloud layer moves across the sky in the early part looks 'unreal'. I was so glad to have caught a partly cloudy day to catch all the brilliant colors of sunset. '85? Dude, you've been doing this stuff for a long time! Here I'm 'wiggin' out' getting what I can with my old 10D! Thing that amazes me now is how cheaply we can do this stuff now. Way back when you were rolling with RCA and VCR you would have gotten an Emmy for what I did in 3 hours waiting for the rig to do it's thing!

Wolf -

Really nice - Love the contrails and sky color changes!

I did some more time lapse stuff a long time ago (like 1985) and would be hard pressed to find the tape now (RCA video camera - with separate VCR - had time lapse capabilities).

It amazes me how far we've come in so short a time...

Rohlux,

Thanks for the nod. This is actually a much lower res version! The original is almost 2K! This version is scaled down to 720p which is what I work with regularly. Don't forget to put in fresh batteries prior to your run. On my first test I forgot that!

"Winter Sunset 01" is an example of why I am interested in learning to do TL. It looks really sharp. I like the jet trails.

Magnificent sunset here last night. I tried a TL but it crashed. At least now I know how the intervalometer works.

Nice one Bruce! Glad you're back up and running!

Thing I hate about shooting the moon is the 'trade off'. If you want sharp lunar detail, you don't get any cloud or star detail. It's one or the other!

Well here's one I shot in daylight. Though the uncompressed version is phenomenal, this web-friendly version isn't too shabby. Let me know what you think.
