It's funny you should suggest that. That's exactly what I tried last night. Although I don't quite understand how to use soundtrack Pro, I did see where I could change the speed of the video and audio independently. Any other tips or hints would be appreciated thank you.

I've got a problem I hope someone or many can help me with. I did a multi cam shoot over Christmas 2011 using 2 Canon XL2's and a Canon XLH1 (the HD version of the XL2) I did not record audio because the venue audio engineer was doing a "LIVE" recording and gave me the uncompressed WAV file 3 weeks ago.

The PROBLEM: My video sequence begins to lag the audio after only a minute into the edit.

The EDIT: I took my video and did a multi cam sequence in FCP 7. All matched-up perfectly. Then I took the supplied audio track and matched it up to the video at the In Points. All looks good for the first 20-30 seconds, then the video begins to lag the audio just a little at first and then progressively getting worse.

If I create a short 1 minute Quicktime file, it's even worse.

Any suggestions would be of great help and I can supply more details.

Finally, yes, I know that in the multi cam sequence, I can use the audio file as a audio track and switch between the camera views but that too gave me the same "audio-lagging video" problem I described above.

PLEASE HELP!!! I've gotten more than 40 hours of work in the post-edit and I'm no closer to being done than when I started.

Thanks,

Thank you for those links.....I was not able to initially fix the problem...I initially began editing in CS-3 while it did export with the sync problem but to fix I had to then import into CS5.5 Resync and export that resulted in time saving trying to fix out why I was having the initial problem. So, far I created another project same cameras, same audio collection file and sync all of my media...exported and no problem...so my guess is that something in the initial project that created that sync problem...Thank you for your input.

since I have to upload to youtube....I've had to split the video in four parts...I initially exported to quick time using codec H-264...all four parts in Premiere were ok in the syncronization...I exported each part using the same settings...Part 1 & 2 once uploaded to youtube and viewed they were un-synced...but 3 & 4 were ok...

At this point I Re-exported parts 1 & 2 to the AVI format part one looked ok but part two seemed out of sync....Same settings in AVI....

I too am using Adobe CS4' It started out fine but then the time line got out of
sync. You cannot edit in the timeline when the video and audio track
are out of sync, especially when using AB-roll. I have been going back and forth with Adobe for three
months now and they have not come up with a solution. I have a super fast computer with 12 g ram
and quad4 processor. I'm running Windows 7 - 64 bit. There were no format changes from the first time I used CS4 to now so it can not be the format. Anyone have any
suggestions?

I have given up and switched over to Sony Vegas 9. No problem
there but it takes 14 hours to render a 90 minute video. I was using
green screen for most of it so that may be the reason it took so long.

Hey everyone,

Recently I deleted all the temporary render files in my premiere pro media cache folder to free up space on my mac hard drive. This unfortunate action somehow prevented me from opening my premiere project file. I have wiped my entire drive and reinstalled the creative suite to try and get it open, and now I am able to get my project file open, but everything has been somehow corrupted.

So here's my problem... I believe that the premiere is unable to read the footage file's timecode because all my edits are out of sync, both the audio and the video. The sequences are all still put together properly, every shot and every audio clip is the right length and in the right place, but it's drawing the source from the wrong point on the captured tape. So to illustrate, as I play a sequence, not only is it playing audio from earlier or later on the tape than the point I specified, but the video is coming from the wrong point as well. The audio and video are not even from the same incorrect place on the tape! I've examined the footage in the source monitor and have discovered that although the audio and video are initially in sync, they slip out of sync as the clip goes along. I assume this is part of the problem, and it's one I've read about, but it isn't manifesting in the timeline in any way I am familiar with.

I have tried importing the footage in a new project file and have had the same problem. I have tried selecting "replace footage" in my initial project file to no avail. I have also tried opening various older versions and backups of my project and have had the same problem. The issue is clearly with the captured footage and premiere's ability to properly index it. When I deleted the render files, I must have deleted something that premiere creates when you capture footage that it needs to getting everything to sync up.

Can anyone think of a way I can get my project working properly again? Any help would be much appreciated.

My specs: I'm operating Premiere Pro CS4 on my Macbook Pro running OSX 10.6.2 Snow Leopard with 4 GB of RAM. My footage is all 1440x1080p at 24fps in mpeg format. The mpeg file plays fine outside of premiere.

So, Paul form MUVIPX.COM suggested a solution - use VideoReDo+ to Re-Mux initial file. What I did:

1) I opened captured file into VideoReDo+

2) Saved it with new name.

3) Software found a few problems in captured file, fixed them, and created a new file.

4) Premier Pro has no problems with this new file.

Software sells for $50 and definitely worth this money.

I had this problem with Premiere Pro CS4, and it was frustrating me greatly. The more I edited and the further along I got, the more audio got out of sync with the video. Turns out, it was the format it was in; Premiere Pro does NOT like .m2ts, (the native Blu-ray format) I recorded in regular AVCHD which is a .ts file that my Hauppauge HD PVR can also record to, tried importing it into Premiere Pro, and D'OH! PPCS4 doesn't support .ts. Great. I decided to try renaming it to .mts, which is supported and as far as I know, the same format and wrapper as .ts. It worked beautifully. All my audio sync problems disappeared.

You could try converting to AVCHD and giving it a .mts extension.

Have you try converting the video to another format? I like .mov, it works pretty good for me. You can also move only the audio, sync it according to the video and then link the audio with the video again. If your video have someone talking its much easier, match the mouth movement with the talking of the person. Nonetheless try converting the video to another format it may work better.

I have been using Adobe Premier Pro CS4 for a few months for a number of small/big projects and it worked fine. However, in the last two projects I faced a strange problem: audio lags video.

1) I captured 1hour HD material form SONY FX1000 in to PP CS4 as usual. I checked MPEG file using Windows Media Player and there was perfect sync between audio and video. Then I imported this file as an asset into PP and watched it there. The beginning of the file is O.K., but at the end audio lags video by ~1s. Same problem was in MPEG2 file after encoding. I tried to re-capture the file - no effect. Becasue editing was quite simple, I managed to correct this problem by settting audio speed = 100.025%?

2) Second example was much worse. I have compressed 1hour MPEG2 file. It works O.K. in WMPlayer. I imported it into PP and found complete de-sync between audio and video. Due to extremely bad quality of initial material all I can say for sure is that at the end of the clip audio lags video by ~13sec. It is difficult to say what happens at the begining but changing audio speed to match A and V at the end does not help in the middle. I by-passed the problem using different editor (Ulead media Pro) and produced required file.

So, what is the root cause of this effect? I admit, just before the first project I made extensive cleaning of Adobe files that littered my computer. Looks like I either deleted some important file or made un-intentional change to PP settings. I did not try re-installing PP CS4 yet. Any other ideas?

Is there any way to re-sync or re-calibrate an audio/video file in the PPro CS4? I captured HDV footage in PPro using standard MPEG format (as per usual)... the start of the clip is fine, but the audio is out of sync in the later section (in the timeline). When I "Edit Original" or preview in Bridge the audio/video are perfectly in sync. I tried deleting the clip and importing into PPro again, copying to a new project, searching online... still no luck.

Many thanks,

Thanks Composite1.  I considered this solution, but I'd rather use it as a redundancy practice, rather than the primary way of syncing audio.  My thought is to invest in a recorder with timecode - just want to make sure i get one that "get's along" with my V1U. Â

The most 'ghetto' solution is to do an 'audio slate' and sync 'clap' when you start recording on both your audio and video devices. This is an ancient school technique still used by the film guy's to sync sound to film in post. This works quite well but the drawback is, you'll have to keep both your camera and audio devices running throughout the performance. So that means no turning off the camera while shooting. Now you need to find out if there are going to be breaks in the performance so you can re-slate and clap at the begining of each set. Hopefully, each set won't go more than an hour. Get 63 video tapes minute tapes and prep them prior to the show (3 minutes ain't a lot of extra time, but it helps!) If you can patch your recorder directly into one of the mixer's outputs to get a pre-mixed sound. It's not a hardcore tech solution, but it will get the job done if handled properly.

I am shooting live band performances on a Sony V1U and would like to record audio from the bands audio mixer - however I want the freedom to move my camera without being tied down by cables. Â I am looking for an affordable digital audio recorder to solve my problem, but want to make sure I do not wind up with audio sync issues during post.

Here are some of my questions.

If I go with an inexpensive recorder - such as a Zoom H4 or the Marantz 660 - both of which do not have SMPTE timecode, what is the best way to insure audio sync during post?

Â

If I decide to go with a more robust audio recorder, such as the Tascam HD P2 or the Edrol R44 - both of which have timecode - how do I sync timecode on both units during production? Â Which unit acts as the timecode slave and does the Sony V1U broadcast timecode?

Â

I appreciate any help on this topic.

Â

Very good points on using the audio to match up the clips. I did a play recently with 2 cameras and was fortunate to have very little drift.

Good point on the drift, especially when mixing tape formats like that. It will be fairly obvious when you start hearing an echo on the dialogue.

Also, my experience has been that it's easier if you break your video into segments at natural points in the action. I've shot using as many as

four cameras. The best way that I've found is to zoom in on a sound event on your main camera and mark the point on your timeline, then

slide the other video tracks to match. If there is applause, there is almost always someone who claps first, that works great.

You may start to see some "drift" after several minutes, which is why it's a good idea to break the edit up . This also works if you recorded

your audio separately with a digital recorder. Listen to both audio tracks. As you move closer and closer to sync you'll hear the audio come

into phase. Then mute the "unwanted" audio track.

Hope that helps.Â

Both posts offer great advice. But keep in mind that you not only have to mark your time with a defined clap when you switch tapes, but also if you pause a camera. Your best bet is to mark it and let them run. If you end up having to switch tapes you will need a new clap, but not necessarily at the beginning of the tape. Assuming your event ends on with tape in both cameras, you can clap at the end and use that for syncing. You would just have to capture both tapes, go to the first frame with audio from the clap on camera one and split the clip. Do this again for camera two and line them up on your timeline. Select both of them and extend the clips backwards until you reach the beginning. If your NLE has multi cam than you can edit that way or like Grinner said, cut way from your top clip to show the clip below when you want that angle. If all else fails you can use a distinct motion or sound from your event if it is in both frames or is audible on both cameras. I have used a guitar players hands, priest's wave of the hand, and once even a cough from the crowd. Use your eyes to find the syncing point, but use your ears to make sure they are sync'd properly. It is easier to hear when you are off by even 1 frame than it is to see it. Most importantly, keep the cameras rolling. Unless you have time code or can mark your scenes easily it is not worth the headache of syncing multiple times just to save some tape.Â

You'll save a lot of time by visually syncing once and placing camera two on v2. The, as you edit subtractivly, you can keep both cameras in sync. You can then just lift out what you dont want on v2, revealing v1.

This allows to to sync once and just edit rather than waiste time finding a match per event.
