Hi All,

I am really embarrassed to even post this, but I'll give it a shot (no pun intended).

For my business, I want to do a multicamera shoot. Here is my hardware set up...I have 2 Panasonic HPX170's, each connected via SDI to a Panasonic HMX100 Video Mixer. I have a regular LCD computer monitor connected to the HMX100 via DVI-D in addition to a AJA KI Proto connected to the HMX100 to serve as the recording device for the single video shot.

Now here is the dumb question (ready for it?):

I cannot get the camera output for each camera to appear on the reference monitor. It shows nothing. Now I don't have P2 cards in the camera, b/c I don't think I will need them given I am recording the "mixed" video shot from the video mixer to the AJA Ki Pro. But nothing appears and when I hit the record button on the camera, nothing happens. I believe I have set up the mixer appropriately, because the reference monitor does show 2 mini windows for the two cameras, but they are white and nothing shows up.

Please help! And please be kind!

This is one of the most time consuming aspects of my business, I spend hours and hours mixing performances, and have tried an older MXPro in the past. Quality is really awful. Using HD cameras now (XHA1S), and even though we are shooting these SD; the quality bring in via FCP and editing multicam is so much nicer.

Wondering if it may be good to use Canon FS-CF DTEs rather than fooling with tape, and tape issues that arise often; or trying a software based solution like wirecast?

It just seems like getting a switcher that handles firewire is really going way out of our budget.

Sure could use a little advise! Just finishing up Christmas performances this week.... ready to get these done much faster.

according to B&H, this camera has component video...output I would assume. Component is analog, and MUCH better than RCA, which is composite.

So you should be able to go into your switcher...

We have just upgraded to Cannon XHA1s cameras; but could not upgrade our analog switcher (Focus MX4) and was wondering about the possibility of catching a signal from the cameras, and sending it to the switcher.

The cameras have BNC outs, as well as RCA.... anyone have ideas?

I am looking for a simple method of live editing for switching between a video stream coming from the camcorder and a presentation output from the projection system and channeling it to a DVR or small video recorder that stores video in full quality (non-web) format. I am looking for at least 2 channels as well as a fader in the mixer. HD capability is highly preferable, so composite inputs would not be the best. What are the best, cheapest opions for a good, stable setup without quality degradation along the line of production - basic video mixer and DVR recorder?

Forget about the switcher. I use 2 HD7's for a lot of live events. Just use a clapper board, or electronic flash at the beginning and keep the cameras running.

Use the multicam setup in Vegas or FCP to do the cuts and fades after. Put the tracks/clips on the timeline and adjust to the audio waveform to synchronize.

In Vegas I can display each camera in the preview window and switch between them as I watch the playback. I'm pretty sure you can do the same in FCP.

B & H video has a selection of video mixers, several under $1500 that have four inputs and all the bells and whistles of a basic switcher. Any of them can meet your needs. I would recommend that if you can't afford to purchase a new switcher, you can use B & H to learn about your options then check out eBay or any number of video outlet stores.

Good luck in your search.

I have a slowly dying Videonics switcher, and would like to use a spare Vista machine as a switcher/recorder.

I have three cameras fed into the switcher via s-video to tape live events and church services. Audio is run from a mixer board. What I'm thinking of doing is putting three or four PCI tv tuner cards into the PC -- but i'm not sure if one PC can handle that many.

What I'd really like to find is like the Canopus boards we used to have when I worked for Charter Cable. Four inputs on one card, onscreen previews of the video feeds in an easy to use switching program. This was back in the days of Win98 and Pentium II 266Mhz and only 256megs of ram. If that clunker could handle that, surely there's stuff out now that can do it, too.

The Canopus boards are no longer around -- they were old when I got to use them. VidBlaster software is a reasonablepackage to handle multiple sources -- the only issue I'm faced with is getting those analog sources into the computer.

In my opinion, what you should do:

 Have all your cameras recording.

Then have someone stand in the shot (so all the cameras can see the person) and clap or something. This creates a common point on all the tapes.

Bring those tapes into FCP and use the multi camera editing feature. WHen you use that, you need to mark a common point in FCP so the multi-camera editing works smoothly. That's why it's important to have someone stand in the shot and clap or something.Â

Â

You can do what NewBirth said, buy JVC250Us, but that will cost you over 20 grand, plus you need a switcher and monitors...basically a whole control room. Â

The HD7 is a fine rig, however it does not have a time code gen. there are a few ways to do it.

one as you have said, use a switcher. the other is to run a cromokey time gen behind your shot and then key it out after you finish editing. and the third is to sell your hd7's and buy 2 jvc hd250u's
