Robin on "DSLR vs. Prosumer Camcorder?"

Hello,

I am a student filmmaker and I am about to purchase a new camera. I am debating between a DLSR (something like the Canon 7d) or a prosumer camcorder (like the Canon XA10.) My budget is around $2,000 or so.

I already have a digital camera (the Nikon d80, which is decent) so I am leaning towards a camcorder. I feel that since if I am trying to be a filmmaker and not a photographer a DSLR is not the right direction to go. However, a lot of my friends have and recommend them because they are versatile (in terms of lenses and whatnot.)

Any comments or advice? Is there another brand that I should consider? Do you have any other recommendations for cameras?

(Just a note as far as my post production goes-- I edit on final cut pro 6 and have a 1 TB external hard drive.)

Hi everyone,

My name is Florian, I'm 21, I'm new here and I'm am found of video (from
shooting to editing). I'm not good enough to become a director I think,
but I practice video at my own level and take a huge pleasure in doing
this.

I have just created a kind of web-tv about a six month trip in East
Asia. On this website, you can follow trips, portraits, cities, clips,
places, parties, etc...

http://www.asiantriptv.com

I hope you will enjoy it !

You can see here one of the videos, this is the portrait of a young indonesian girl shot in Singapore, also student at Harvard.

http://vimeo.com/26861400

Any feedback is welcomed and will help me a lot in my project.

See you soon

I'm a film student in Boston and a resident of Cape Cod. My dream is to make movies someday, but paying for expenses is nice too.

I work very hard to find people who might be interested in my services, which ranges from event video, music videos, and commercials.

I've tried to reasonably price my service at $350 per day on production, a $100 consulting rate (which is for people who want help on troubleshooting), and $50 per hour for editing. Which I think is pretty cheap. And lots of people have turned their noses up at it.

Posting on Craigslist has found me individuals who won't even pay more than $100 or less.

Recently I've just given in and have been marketing my price at around $150 - $200 flat. Which I've begun to regret, but what else can I do?

I have no idea how to just simply find and call up places that might require my service. And I have no experience in putting myself out there.

Is there any advice someone can give me as to where to begin?

What's the most commonly used editing software in news studios for videographers these days?

Would learning from the "Final Cut Pro for News and Sports Quick-Reference guide be relevant today?

Do you have any book suggestions that might be useful to learn from for computer news editing?

(insert long sigh) Yes, I admit I too made a 'Student Film'. Had to otherwise they wouldn't have let me graduate. That said, I did my very best to avoid as many cliche's as humanly possible to keep it from looking totally like a student film. Actually, I hate student films. Most are so horrific that when an actual gem pops up I can literally hear Handel's "Messiah" with full orchestra and angelic choir loud and clear.

The following film "Script Cops" by Scott Rice brings to realization of the 'crackdown' on student films that's long been overdue.

Hey guys I'm thinking of buying a new laptop and need some help and reccomendations.

I'm a Television Broadcasting Student and I will pretty much be using every multimedia software you guys use for the next 2 years on this laptop; FCP (mac only, I know), AVid, Protools, Adobe CS3/4, 3d Studio Max just to name a few. I know you guys will probably tell me to go for a desktop but I do a lot of editing on the fly (yes 2 hour bus rides to and from school) and i already have 2 old desktops at home.

I was leaning the 15" macbook pros at 2.53Ghz (might get the 2.8ghz) which runs at about just under $3000 however I've always been a PC and only have used macs at school but i've been slowing coming around since I got an Ipod Touch for christmas. One other reasone I've been looking at the MB Pros is that I will HAVE to do most of my video editing on FCPro for the next 2 sems, and The real selling point for me is that I can Also install Win XP with bootcamp. I don't want to have to buy a PC laptop with Vista preinstalled (.. but if i must..).

What do you guys think, Should I buy the 15" MB Pro (Convince me not to). If i do should I get the the 2.53ghz or the 2.8ghz for $278 more. I also want this to last me for at least 3.5 years, ideally 5 or even 6.

If not a MBP then what laptop do you specifically recommend that will last me for the next 4years. Should I get one with Quad core? I've been browsing a lot of PC laptops but I really dont know which one to get.

Im looking at the price rage of about $2000 or under but will consider anything up to$2800

Keep in mind I may also be doing some gaming on it but it's not at all a priority.

I'm a sophomore in highschool and I am enrolled in the video production course at my school. I love whaat I have learned so far and am seriously considering video production as a career choice. I have already entered a few contest and am looking forward to entering more. My friend I are awaiting the results from a state-wide student PSA contest, but I have recieved word that we are at least in the top ten. My class uses Gl-2's and Macpro's with FCS 1, but I only have limited access to them.

If I wanted to put together a bare-bones setup of my own, computer (maybe laptop) camera, editing software, what would you recomend? I love the final cut software, especialy motion, but it(along with the computer I would need)is waaaay out of my price range. As cheap as posible would be best, and even then this is more just wishing. I am currently saving for a trip next year through school to greece, (lots of shoveling and mowing in my future), but I would absolutely love to have access to materials at any time to both help me advance in my understanding and give me more time to find/enter contests.

Hey guys, I'm a loyal magazine reader but new here to the forum and I figured I'd start it off with a showcase post. I've put two of my short films on YouTube. One is an 8-minute long sci-fi short experiment with greenscreening and a very effects-heavy project, the other is my recent nearly-hour-long drama about growing up and making sacrifices in society in order to lead a sustainable life. I made them both as part of classes in my senior year of high school, and both have gotten good responses from those who've seen them.

Watch the short sci-fi film here: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yti2LTGigUM).

Watch the seven-part drama here: part one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3_x5_-6YH0),
part two (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpHrA0qAyn8),

Thanks a lot for watching, the festival run is in progress, as LATENT(CY) has been submitted so far to five film festivals.
