Chris,

Rather than tell you what I believe would sell, I recommend you simply shoot as much as you can. Most of it will probably be unusable (for personal or professional), but you may get some amazing, once-in-a-lifetime shots. You can't really predict what you'll come across. That said - take plenty of charged batteries and blank media. Good luck!!

Hi all,

I'm off to the Galapagos in June. I went there 22 years ago when I was 12 years old and it was unbelievable. The animals are all unafraid of humans so you can get within touching distance of them. It would be the most amazing place to get stock footage that I could sell. I see SD clips of animals shot there (sealions, iguanas, finches, frigates, etc etc) selling for US$199 on stock footage sites, so I figure I can take some time out to get some footage. Problem is that the regular tours are tightly controlled (time of stay on each island, close supervision etc). Does anyone have any experience of shooting there? Does anyone know what sort of footage (types of animals etc) sells the best?

Any thoughts on this would be massively appreciated!!

Â

Chris

Â

I shoot with Sony Z5's so I will take one of those along.Â

Hi -

I sell clips on Pond5 - My HD clips are $10 each or less.

I also own several Digital Juice HD basketball animations (along with about 350 of their other offerings) and don't see any text, English or otherwise, anywhere on them. Plus if you're not doing HD, their software will render out both NTSC and PAL resolutions. They probably have the best international value out there.

I see the value of having customizable clips but still don't get your pricing.

Yes, compared to some stock houses out there you are competitive - but only the high priced ones. Perhaps you might consider a more varied pricing model.

How does your product line differentiate itself from the likes of Digital Juice, Digital Hotcakes, MotionLoops, etc... where they have similar products for far less money ($49 for one simple 30 second motion graphic seems a bit steep to me in the current market).

For example, you have one basketball clip for $49 (http://www.editableclips.com/video/6606.html) while Digital Juice has Editors Themekits ($50 each or four for $100) which have four motion backgrounds, three overlays, a lower third, two animated wipes, one high res PSD graphic and mattes for the overlays & lower third - All basketball related (http://www.digitaljuice.com/products/products.asp?pid=1064) all in both HD and SD.

Please don't think I am demeaning your product - The graphics look quite nice. I am just trying to understand your pricing model.

Is it just me, or is everyone having a problem getting their stuff accecpted on istock's site. It seems to me that they like to refuse footage based on things we as shooters have absolutly no control over. Things such as the cameras internal compression settings. I would like to hear your thoughts on this, and maybe some advice on where I may be able to upload my stuff that dosen't take 80% of my work for themselves.

Hi Nathan,

Sounds like you did everything right with the approval process. The above comment is correct, in that the client pays, so the client gets what he wants. However the first part is where you can make some headway. In the future, you might want to bill per hour for editing. You will be surprised just how few changes are really neccessary when the client is paying you for them. ;)

Something to keep in mind though is that a happy client is what you want out of this at the end of the day. Usually I charge per hour of editing, and then knock off a few at the end of the project for a discount, keeps everyone feeling like they got a good deal.

For stuff like this, I've made up a storyboard form that I send out before I show up to shoot. I try to get them to lay out the entire project, and then I stick to their storyboards when I shoot and edit. That way when they want changes, I feel more justified in charging the hourly rate, because I was doing what they asked me. ;)

Nathan,

To Master Birdcat you should listen (using my best Yoda voice.) In every proposal and contract I put forth for a project there is always the stipulation that, 'any changes or additions beyond the original project scope and approved budget will be treated as a separate project and will be charged to the client as such.' The joy/pain of being an Executive Producer is being able to make the big calls and pay for them. Remember, the client doesn't own anything until they've paid for it in full.

Besides, music video clients are more of a PIA than charities and churches (which is saying something!) I generally try to avoid them as much as possible. Even when they do have money and are willing to pay (on time), they usually have 'delusions of grandure' and will run you through a whole bunch of BS before the project is complete. More often than not, the aggravation is not worth the money.

In the end, it is the "client's" video and what he wants should be your primary concern - Bottom line is whoever pays gets creative control.

That said, if he's not paying for all this editing, then you have some decisions to make (like whether you continue).

I learned from a "client from hell" that a time limit is now built into my revisions clauses and the client pays for each hour of revisions after a certain amount (like 4-8 hours). My contract now is very specific about what gets delivered and for how much. (I got it from someone on a message forum and modified it to suit my work). As for who's vision gets produced, in the end, it's whoever is paying (in other words, you want creative control, do it on your nickel).

Hey there,

I'm a little young to the business side of videography, and I've only just begun to get into contracts, rights and all that legal jargon. This is mostly because my strengths are in Cinematography, but unfortunately to make a living these days I need to put on a producer hat most of the time and... well that's not my strength at all. So I was hoping to get some feedback on a recent problem I had...

My most recent project was a music video (still editing). From the start, I had my client sign a contract agreement regarding prices, and deadlines and whatnot. My director and I sat and talked to him for a few hours about the look and message of the video, and what he wanted to accomplish, the equipment we'd like to use... everything we could think of in order to ensure we were on the same page. We then wrote a treatment, describing in detail how the video will be edited in its finished form, and after three revisions, it was approved. We also did this with our schedule and budget, all were approved.

After shooting the project, we edited a first cut, color corrected, and added in rough visual effects. We showed the client and he gave us a LONG list of changes, very specific ones including time code (which was helpful, I admit, but I couldn't help but feel a bit smothered). A lot of his decisions ended up entirely changing the project from its original treatment which we agreed upon.

After having a long discussion with him, it's now become clear that he originally was looking for more of a political video than your standard rock video with performance shots... which was really the bulk of what we recorded! We're now stuck with having him send us a package of stock footage, and he's having us replace the shots that we recorded on location with shots he found in a documentary... which is kind of painful to do to work you spent hours composing in the field!

I'm sure it's not a matter of the video quality being poor. He even said it himself that we did a fantastic job with what we shot, but he's not happy with the video's message...

So, my fellow videomakers... I'm curious, how can this issue be avoided in the future? Was it my fault for not getting this out of him before hand? Should I be more specific in my contract about creative control? Or is this normal and I should just learn to expect it?

Thanks

Aspyrider,

If you have stock footage to sell, I would recommend pond5.com. You can create an account, upload footage for free (provided it meets specifications), and then anyone in the world can buy your footage for a price you set. Pond5 gets 50% of the profit and you get 50%. I just started uploading some of my footage. They also have a great interactive flash footage-previewer they call a "widget." You can customize with your clips and then embedd it in your own website. I have one embedded on my website if you want to see it (http://www.sdgstudio.net/stock.aspx)

I would appreciate any critiqueing of my footage.

I'm just on my way over to check out yours. I'll let you know what I think.

Hi folks,

Just like to invite posters here over to the forum at http://stockfootageforfree.com/

Joel is starting a nice place to visit and ask questions, get input and generally talk about video over there. If you get a chance, try to visit and log in. It's new so there isn't many people yet but it's growing.

Consider this your invitation!

Thanks,

J.
