I have a 2 month old new open box sony hdr-td10 full hd, 3d camcorder for sale. I thought i would use it a bunch, but it turns out for me there is nothing interesting for me to film when it is freezing and snowing outside. There is 0 imperfections on the unit, the lens has never been touched. Opened and only used to test the 3d viewing on the lcd screen. Has all original accessories, box, manuals and software along with warranty cards (still under manufacturers 1 year warranty). I paid $1500 for the unit. If interested please make me an offer I live in Algonquin, IL. Zip Code 60102. I have a verified/confirmed paypal account to make the transaction with. Thanks.

What is a better microphone for my Sony HDR-Fx7 camera? I've been looking at Rode Videomic and the Rode Stereo Videomic. Suggestions? Or if there is any mic better than the 2, within the price range is good. Thank you!

Like composite said, the plug-in and "pull-plug" will probably work depending on the type of connection you have (e.g. shape of adapter). The possibility of getting it to work also varies among different types of audio jacks. Depending on the camcorder, it might be hard finding the sweet spot in order to get a clean signal.

Just to let everyone hear, I've also been able to use this method by plugging headphones into the camcorder's A/V jack. After a few tries of adjusting the plug correctly, I get a perfectly crisp signal (left and right) and the audio levels are fine. The headphone plug seems to make proper contact with the audio portion of the camera's A/V output. Of course, if your A/V jack is the oddly shaped half circle, then this shortcut won't be viable. Not to say that this type of jack is bad. The half circle-shaped jack is actually known to prevent interference, resulting in a higher quality display on TVs.

Smoking,

Up front you don't. However, a work around (a ghetto workaround that is) would be to get a stereo mini male to dual mini female 'Y' adapter. Plug the stereo adapter into the camcorder and your two mono plugs into the mini female receptors. Again, you'll have to do the 'plug pulling thing' to get your right and left channnels to connect. The reason I say this workaround is 'ghetto' comes from the prospect of your 'pulled plug' not being in the receptor securely as the one that is fully connected. One minor tug and out it will come. Also, it won't have the full insulation as there will be bare metal exposed so if the metal on a zipper, belt buckle, whatever contacts it there will be a wondrous 'buzz' amongst your recorded sound.

Stereo mini plugs are fine to work with, but they work best plugged in stereo to stereo. Now a while back I ran across dedicated R-L mono-mini plugs (red, white or black, white connection stripes) that were spaced so you could avoid the whole 'pulling plug thing'. That was at least 11 years ago. You can dig around Radio Shack to see if they have them, but it's been that long since I've seen them.

An audio post work around that I use regularly, is to just 'mirror' the recorded channel in your editing software. So if you only have 'channel 1' audio or 'L', then you copy the track and paste it into channel 2 or the 'R' channel. Ideally, you want to have your recorded sound in stereo but it's the nature of the beast to record different audio sources on different channels.

Smoking,

Dude you're only going to get one channel. It is highly likely that you may have to 'pull' the plug until your mini connects with the channel you're able to use. Unfortunately, this varies from camera to camera so you may be able to stick the plug all the way in and it will 'connect' or you may have to pull it out until it does. Same thing will apply to mono to stereo adapters. So if you plug in your mic and don't get any sound try this before you decide something's broken.

Hi folks...I'm new around here, so please forgive me if I sound like a newb. I'm sure this question has been asked and answered before, but I can't find the answer.

If I put a mono microphone (which most are) into the stereo mic jack on a camcorder, won't sound only be recorded on one channel (i.e., come out of one ear when played back)? If that's correct, how do I correct that? I know Radio Shack and other stores sell mono-to-stereo adapters. Would that work or is there a better solution?

Peachydingo asks: " I would like to do field recordings of nature sounds here in Florida (birds, frogs, etc.) The conditions can be hot and humid, and I need to work at night.

What types of mikes and recorders would you recommend?

I like the idea of the zoom H4n with phantom powered shotguns, but should I also consider a high end stereo mic for ambient? "

There are a couple dozen or more decent small, portable digital audio recorders. I haven't had enough experience with them so I can't make any recommendations other than the Korg MR-1000 which I have owned for a couple years. Phantom power at the mic jacks is a good thing, but be sure the available voltage will power your mic of choice; ie, some " Phantom power " is only 12 volts, whereas most of the better condenser mics require 48 volts. I'm not a fan of pocket recorders which feature automatic level control. If one is not careful, a recording may come out squashed; ie, obviously compressed dynamic range . . .

My preference for " ambiences " would be a pair of good omni-directional condenser mics, spaced ten or twelve feet. ( Gee, I hope you're not considering surround sound! ) Coincident stereo mics, shotgun or otherwise, simply do not provide the sense of space an omni pair can provide. ( doubling up a mono track is poor man's faux stereo which went out a couple decades ago ) There is no need for tall mic stands when recording BG's ( less gear to tote ). The mics should be as close to the ground as possible w/o getting em wet!

As for recording specific critter noises, it's hard to beat something like the Sennheiser 815 long shotgun. You'll need only one mic here, to record your critter in mono, which will presumably be mixed into the stereo BG bed you have recorded, when you get to the sound mix on your project. Parabolic mics color the sound too much in my opinion.

Try to keep your gear to a minimum and your setups simple as possible out there in the boonies!

"... Old DAT recorder...."

Ha! I've even got some old 'brand new' never been opened DAT tape I could sell you cheap. Yeah, you could easily run with that. But if you're of the growing throng of production pros who can't stand to digitize anything anymore, your best option is flash media. I kinda miss DAT's. If you had one with timecode on it long as you kept it dry and the heads clean they worked great.

Peachy,

Shotgun mics + parabolic dish + pistol grip + fuzzy muff. Add unlubricated condom over the mic (not over the muff) if conditions are wet. You can buy a PB Dish or prefab one yourself. Save your money from the 'high-end stereo mic' and use it to buy a good flash format audio recorder and XLR cables. You get good audio on one channel and you can copy it to a second for the 'stereo effect' in audio post.

Enjoy the mosquitoes and don't forget to set your watch for the 3 O'clock rainstorms. Oh and that thing floating in the water coming towards you isn't a log....
