This year I finally decided to offer a season dvd package for area youth football leagues. I was originally going to charge $10 per dvd but wised uip and thought that was entirely too low for a month and half worth of filming at 6 to 8 hours every Saturday plus all the editing.

I now thought to price them at $20 until today a friend of mine who is also a player's dad said that I could charge between $35-$40. So any advice on pricing would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a short clip of a BMX rider shot at 60p with the Canon 7D and then time-stretched to 1000fps using the Twixor plug-in. Looks amazing as the effect is used in bursts.

I volunteered to make a movie for my school's sports banquet next May. It will be for basketball (boys and girls), soccer (boys and girls), and volleyball (girls).

does anyone have suggestions of background music for each of the teams?

i already am thinking about Eye of the Tiger, Whoomp! There it Is, Get Ready for This, and Welcome to the Jungle

I record sports for a small college teams using my own Canon GL2. The color and sound are great and the production timeline has been manageable. I'd shoot a game on tape one evening, do a little editing overnight and deliver discs to coaches the next morning.

Because of changes in the conference, we'll need to produce discs for the opposing team right after the game. Consequently, we need to record directly to some type of device in real time. I've seen several concepts used at other schools...outputting the signal to a computer, recording to a DVD deck, etc. but am looking for the simplest, most cost-effective method.

Does anyone have a recommendation? Details are appreciated...

Incidentally, I still plan to record to tape as well, for archival purposes...I'll use that copy to create highlight reels!

It's been a while since I've put up videos. I rectify that with a really cool vid by Eric Cheng of his experiments using the GoPro Sports camera and it's standard underwater housing vs the teeth of several sharks!

Does anyone have experience shooting sporting events and editing highlight films? This is my main area of interest within this industry and plan to do it for high schools in my area. I'm basically looking for suggestions on pricing and pricing structure. I know a lot of athletic programs are hard up for cash at this point, and with some experience in the past I think I can help with this by creating highlight films that can be sold to the team members/families, etc. I had success in college creating highlight films for my team, and then selling them through the program to make money. Of course I was a student then, and the program took 100% of the profits... but does this sound like something that I can extend professionally now? I can charge for time and effort, and the sell 10 dvd's at a certain price, and the program can then sell them for more to the players and keep the difference. Any suggestions, comments?

I just watched the tutorial on creating a 'film look' using 24P, and I felt there were some misleading statements. I'd also like to add a very big comment about PLAYBACK.

If there's no way to display or present your material at 24fps, I challenge the whole concept of shooting at 24P. Most decent video editing software now has the option to work in 24P format, so the material can be encoded to 24P MPEG-2 and displayed using HD DVD and a 24P-capable LCD screen (at a multiple of 24hz, with 120hz and above being optimal). You can also play directly from many cameras in 24P direct to these screens.

However, if you have to convert to an NTSC broadcast format to display the 24P, forget it. A lot of material is still produced on film for TV broadcast, and they generally shoot at 24fps. I've even seen digital video shot at 24P for television broadcast, which is perverse. The whole system for getting feature films onto North American TV is a horrible compromise. The 3:2 pulldown 'expansion' of film frames to interlaced video is not part of the 'film look', especially since that effect doesn't happen in places with 50hz systems, like the UK. They don't watch movies on TV with any 'mashing' of frames.

The TV production world uses 24fps for no other reason than it saves money, particularly in post production. I've seen many TV commercials shot at 24fps where the advertising agency actually believed they were producing a 'film look', which is a testament to the disingenuous nature of advertising.

A couple of other comments:

Motion blur is not the same as strobe - it's the opposite. Strobe occurs when the brain cannot perceive continuous motion, and this happens when we use a slow display frame rate COMBINED with a fast shutter (or narrow shutter angle in a film camera). At 24fps we don't perceive the black phases between the projected images - that's what persistence of vision means. But a narrow shutter angle means that each frame only captures a small percentage of the motion, and we can't put that movement back together in a fluid way. The narrow (or fast) shutter also decreases the motion blur, making things crisper, and this INCREASES the strobe effect.

I also totally challenge the idea that you should add film grain, unless you want a 'vintage' look. 35mm film has more than twice the detail resolution of HD video, and a modern feature film shot on film and transferred to digital video has no perceivable grain, unless it was intentional. Grain comes from degraded stored print, or from high speed stocks 'pushed' in exposure, printing or development.

And lastly, I wanted to comment that the 24fps standard for film-making is not set in stone. I agree that it was introduced with costs in mind, and then became a standard which was difficult to alter for the same reason. But movies are increasingly shot on digital video, and displayed on digital projectors. There's no doubt that a higher frame rate would raise the quality, so I predict that 30fps might be introduced in the near future.

Movies certainly produce the highest quality of image, being processed in post production and projected in theatres at about 4K resolution, but we can only display those images currently on a TV screen at 1920 x 1080, so I have to ask why we trying so hard for a 'film look' in video at 24P, when HD video at 30P arguably looks better on a TV screen?

I look forward to getting some comments!

Hi, being a Brit I am interested to know what, if any, restrictions or laws affect videographers in the USA with regard to filming, for instance, a school track & field or gymnastics event.

In Britain, we must have a CRB check, (Criminal Records Bureau) to certify that the applicant has never been convicted of a sexual crime. Schools, swimming pools and leisure centres have strict rules about filming sporting activities on their premises, To be honest, the rules are often ridiculous.

This year, I filmed the Wales senior indoor track & field championships but didn't record the junior champs because the age-groups involved were Under15s, Under17s and Under20s and if one parent had objected to having his or her son or daughter filmed, I would not have been able to film that particular race or event. I do put a clause in my contract that the client is responsible for obtaining permissions and the more enlightened clubs are realising that the type of publicity and exposure their club or sport can get is worth the effort of adding a disclaimer on their membership forms to be signed by the child's parent or guardian.

I would be interested in any opinions or case histories that anyone might want to add to this thread.

In one of my older posts discussing shooting with the new Canon DSLR video cameras the question of how they handled action footage was the one posters myself included wanted to know. Well I ran across this video by photographer turned cinematographer Patrick Murphy-Racey and his shoot of the SEC football championships shot with the 7D. Shot in 720p at 60p with a Canon pro telephoto lense the imagery is just phenomenal. See for yourselves.

I have a canon gl2, and I'm doing a project for the community TV, and i don't know the best settings for recording sports, skateboarding mostly. Some people said 16:9 with frame mode is the best for sports, but then someone said the frame mode slows frame rate down, and then 16:9 would not be good for sports. Since this is the first time I'm doing a skateboard video for TV i don't know the best settings.

If you could share the one you think would be the best setting for sports, putting in mind that i am doing it for TV.

I'm new to videography but want to start a little business where the main shoot will be at youth outdoor soccer games.

In addition to the game footage, I'll conduct interviews with coaches both indoors and on the field after the games. I'll need sufficient zoom capabilities and want to be utilize good quality slow motion effects.

For editing I've been using Premier Elements 7 and it seems okay although it crashes my laptop regularly.

The camera needs to look professional so a prosumer model seems like the way to go.

Seems like SD is okay for now and when the business gets going I can upgrade.

I'm overwhelmed by the options and really appreciate any insight you can offer!
