Normally I avoid interlaced video, but I want to point out that it can be used to measure instantaneous speed. Each frame in interlaced video contains two fields separated in time by half a frame, about 1/60th sec for 60i. In your editor you can take a snapshot of a single frame showing the two images separated in time by half a frame. All you need is a distance scale to calculate the speed from the distance moved in 1/60th sec. Below are three examples, a race horse at the finish, a passing car and a baseball pitch as it passes the plate.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V13D4WEasj0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv2fLPP1EXY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_QBdHjaWc0

Some of you may find this technique useful to measure the speed of something not easy to do otherwise, at least not without special equipment

I'm using FCP for editing. Can't see much in my editing window because it's too small. When I export to DivX and watch it on a TV screen, I see a little bit of flickering where the fresh paint has been applied. I also think it could be caused by the fact that full HD resolution is making us see details we would not see with our older, lower end camera. HD can be a problem because it hides nothing. We're probably seeing the bubbles created by the contact of the foam roller and the fresh paint.

Question, is it flickering in your editing software? Did you try rendering your footage and does it flicker in the rendered project. I know that in Adobe CS5 ACVHD files will flicker in the desplay screen but when rendered it looks great. I always shoot in 720p and then up-convert to 1080i if needed, looks betted that way on my Panasonic AG-HC150.

I am using a Canon XF300 camera to film someone applying paint to a floor. When the camera in panning on the freshly applied paint, we see flickering and shimmering where light hits the shinny surface. It looks perfect when the camera stands still. I'm shooting at 1028p30 and my shutter speed is 40. Is it because my shutter speed is too low? I've heard that my shutter speed should be twice as fast as the frame rate, which is 30 in my case.

Thank you.

I am thinking of doing that rather than upgrade the PC to a new motherboard and CPU.

Is there a list of file types used by Vegas?

Your idea of doing an AVI then re-rendering is a nice idea.

I have a network drive and was thinking of doing the edit on this machine, store the data on the network drive then, do the Render on the faster media PC?

What do you think?

Thanks again

Sony Movie Studio HD doesn't look like it has support for Network. If your other computer has Movie Studio HD installed, then you can render it in a faster, "more raw format" like AVI and send it over for re-rendering.

"hz" typically refers to the refresh rate of CRT monitors and LCD panels, though in the case of a video camcorder, it may actually refer to frame rate. Most camcorders, however, don't shoot in both 50fps (PAL) or 60fps (NTSC). If it's the refresh rate of your camcorder's LCD/viewfinder, I'd go with 60hz. If the camera's "computer lag" picks up with this setting, I'd go with the lower refresh rate of 50hz.

For years, I did my professional work with a Canon XL2, then XLH1. I film a lot of wildlife, and was looking into overcranking capabilities. I discovered the Panasonic HVX200, which overcranks to 60fps. The quality is great, and the video result is stunning (for subjects like running horses and flying birds).

I am so in love with the aesthetic of slow motion, I wanted to try out the Casio EX-F1 camera. It's a toy, but it has record modes at 300, 600, and 1200fps. The quality is pretty trashy, but the visuals are spectacular.

I would love to purchase a prosumer or professional camera, price range under $15,000 that would be able to record 30fps video with sound, obviously, but have a 300fps mode. Good HD quality, even SD would be acceptable, but 320x480 from the EX-F1 Pro just isn't going to cut it for broadcast.

I've looked and looked, I don't think such a camera exists. Maybe something to do with the sensor, or the way the rotating shutter records high speed video... whatever the reason, I've yet to see anything.

You'd think this would be a fairly popular technology? I've never seen anything compare to a good 300fps movie... they're just spectacular.

Anyway, thanks to anyone and everyone who recommends cameras.

GL2 is a GREAT standard definition camera, decent sound from in-cam mic, but I do often use a shotgun mic, and it is capable of producing 16x9 widescreen and GREAT glass (lens), plus the noted Canon image stabilization.

I seriously doubt, used or otherwise, you'll find one in decent shape and with accessories for $1K - these puppies are still selling for high dollar most places and only someone looking to offload a overworked one, or in desperate need of money is going to let his/hers go for less than $1.5K. The resale value of these cameras remains high.

I am wanting to get into filming quads and try to make my own video. I am currently a rider and I would like to know what a good camera would be. I am looking for a good clear picture. The sound isn't a big issue since most to all atv racing videos use music instead of sound. Although, price is a issue I would like to know the best bang for the buck. I would like to keep it around $1000 or less if possible. I wouldn't mind useing used equipment as long as its in good condition.

"i would never ever recommend miniDVD camcorder for people that want to get into serious editing..a bunch of problems come up"

Â

MiniDV is actually quite reliable. Ever since I got into video I've been using miniDV and I still use it to this day, and many others do too. It's cost effective and is capable of recording a decent image.

Capture to an external hard drive or a second internal hard drive. Never capture to your primary hard drive. Also, I've been told the hard drive speed should be no slower than 7200rpm.

One hour of video is 12-13GB, although, I've also been told you don't want to fill your hard drive more than half way because then it's only working half as good. So for example, I wouldn't fill a 500GB hard drive more than 250GB.

I believe dropped frames has to do with the speed of your drive. If you're talking about drop out, which is when some pixels are like, not there and look like the color of rainbows kinda, then that has to do with having dirty heads in your camcorder or deck.

You need firewire as well. Â
