This could also be done with some lighting, by using varying color gels, or a gel-changer. Many intelligent lighting fixtures have this feature. On a budget, you can use some par cans or better still Ellipsoidals (often called lekos) and have a couple P.A.'s swap out the color gels between shots, or with a bit of practice even while you are shooting.

I would expect barn doors to be a help in controlling where the light goes.

I suspect you'd have to experiment with a few different colors of yarn in order to achieve the maximum effect from the lighting.

look to the theatre and magic industry for answers.. I've seen it done with silk scarves where long streamers of silk were hand dyed multiple colors, and rolled off spools to have the scarves change color during a live play... hope that helps....

Is it possible for you to shoot the tree in timelapse to get the effect that you want, then greenscreen the band under similar lighting conditions? You did say that you were looking for a non-post solution, but that will provide you some latitude for finishing (e.g. shooting pick-ups).

I am directing a music video that involves a band playing underneath a
large oak tree that's wrapped very sporadically and randomly/hectically with multi-colored yarn. Is there a way to make the colors of the yarn
surrounding the band to change like a visualized without having to stop
the band and move the yarn constantly?

I'd like to stay away from post
procedures and come up with a way to "fool the camera" so that the yarn
is "alive" and moving around them? The effect would be almost a time lapse effect behind them of changing yarn colors and patterns...

Anything helps! We'll be shooting with 7D's due to budget limitations.
Thanks!

While I loved that and it was dang funny/great, I don't think its an audience winner. Maybe if it was like a couple buddies watching a game and got to the bottom of a bag. Then shook the Doritos fairy out of the bag with crumbs. First having the look of dispair from no more chips, then suprise of getting the "Power" and zap the family cat on the back of the couch. Then a vioce from the kitchen of the wife "you guys need anything" and a response "nope we're good" guys eating chips and when you close with the logo, a crunch and a meow.

Loved it but just think a different storyline would be better than zapping Mr. Winky and eating chips at the kamode. Great work though, well done.

I have only played with their demo, but FXHome Composite Lab Pro looks like a less-expensive alternative to AE. But, like AE, there seems to be a pretty steep learning curve - without the high price tag.

I have done some very good (and relatively easy) compositing work (chromakey, luminance key, mattes, etc...) with Vegas Pro alone and most (if not all) of these features are available on their sub $100 Movie Studio Platinum Edition which will do this in HD (up to 1080p) or SD (NTSC or PAL).

AE is excellent as a "composting" tool for creating special effects, it is justifiably expensive, For that kind of power, you must expect to lay down the money!

You do not mention what editing software you currently have or how thin your wallet actually is which makes it difficult to give appropriate advice. You can do a great deal of "compositing" with Premiere Pro and FCP, even with Premiere Elements and FCE! The all can edit 16x9 and do keyframing and chroma keying. By adding stock footage, you certainly will be able to "burn down your neighbour's house"!

If you gave us a better sense of what you currently have for software, and exactly what you would like to achieve....

So far Adobe After Effect is the best PC video editing software I found to work with the PCs. I work a lot with green screen, the result comes out really realistic. And it is really easy. I had to purchase the license, but it already paid off multiple times, so I don't regret. There are many step by step tutorials available on youtube and other video related web sites. You cam learn really fast.

I don't know if anyone has seen this or done this but I'm wondering if its possible to do with my editing software (pinnacle studio 10). Any suggestions, tips and advise is welcomed. It looks like this can be achieved with simple chroma/luna key. Am I correct? I can see how the hand ignition is done that way but I'm wondering about the full body. I thought that I saw someone post something about skins but I have no clue about using skins.

Most prior topics on this are 8 months or older and was wondering if anyone has come across anything recent.

After Effects runs $900+. WAX needs video in AVI format to work and it looks to be in 4:3.

If you are working in 16:9 and want to exlpore the art of keyframing, burning down your neighbors house, meteor shower in your city park, muzzle flash from your car's headlights, and other effects, do you know if there are any packages out there for the buget minded (and thin walleted) that might work? I am looking for something beyond those 30 day free trials that I can actually take my time learning.

The best on the cheap fire I've seen should work for your needs. They use a strong fan to blow red/orange cloth flames straight up with a light beneath. The best of these have a rotating filter above the light to provide a more realistic flicker to the "flames." And they also come in a variety of sizes.

In terms of make-up & special effects, I'd strongly recommend you use the tips & tricks on a site dedicated to the small independent producer. It is a free on-line magazine called "MicroFilmmaker Magazine" at http://www.MicroFilmmaker.com and they are nothing but they kind of stuff micro-filmmakers need. They have awesome DIY projects and techniques for production that give professional results at hobbiest prices. And horror is a very popular micro-filmmaker subject, so they have lots of info on blood, gore & violence.

Good luck on your shoot. Â And you may want to check out the article on creating campfires in post.

I am shooting a feature horror film with a Canon XH-A1 @ 24fps (all manual setting obviously). I am concerned with giving my movie that film look, and to be certain I wanted to know everyone's opinion on all the details of the film. I will be using a 12ft kessler crane, 50ft. track run from kesslercranes.com, and a 20 ft. green screen.

We start shooting on Tuesday, so I might just be getting the pre-shoot nerves, but if there are lighting suggestions that would help my film look more eery please let me know. One of my major concerns is our Campfire scene, real fire is almost impossible to control (especially with my budget). I am looking for consistant footcandle and f-stop readings, and at the same time I want the flickering light that fire gives off in real life. How do I recreate that? I plan on using tight shots on the actors around the fire intertweened with far shots off the flex track around the campfire scene (circular track run for this set-up, obviously). I already ordered a roll of CTB to give the key light a moon light look, and even highered a make-up artist. For right now we are using all MAC make-up, but are ordering the lacerations, wax, etc. soon. Additionally, anyone know where the best Hollywood special effects make-up is?

Making 3d look photo real is really something that is done during the modeling and rendering process. If you have the original 3d files then you could tweak the lighting and materials to make it look more realistic. Otherwise if you could post the video file so I could see what your dealing with then I could try and help you more.Â
