Hello Fellow Videomakers!

I am in the process of setting up my video editing suite and have just purchased a Hauppauge Computer Works Colossus video capture card for my main system.

Today I connected my JVC BR-S611U S-VHS deck to the card directly via the composite input and sound via XLR to RCA cables. The video captures fine, however the sound is WAY TOO HOT.

It doesn't seem to matter if you reduce the volume, the distortion is still ever-present in the captured video. I have a feeling that this may be due to the XLR to RCA conversion and not being "line level" or balanced perhaps.

There are future plans (very near future in fact) to get an audio mixer to handle my many sources for the capture device, but I would love to figure out the audio issue and how it might be solved. Again the VCR is a JVC BR-S611U, and so if anyone has experience with these decks and can offer what I may be missing on the audio output, this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you,

Greetings Everyone! This is my first post..... I've been a video hobbyist for quite some time, and have done several different types of videos. But I was asked to video a "Youth Orchestra" Concert in December. This is a bi-yearly function and the person who was doing the video has decided to retire. I'm a little apprehensive about doing this since I've never have done this before. It is being held in the local community theater, and I was wondering what the best way of getting great sound. I have seen the video dvds of previous concerts and they seem to be pretty good. I just don't know how he achieved it.

I shot with a DSLR and I have been looking into getting an xlr adapter box such as the one made by Beachtek so I can use xlr mics. After thinking, I was wonder what the difference would be if I just bought an xlr to 1/8 (1/8 goes into my dslr) cable as long as my mic is powered? Thats $10 vs $300...am I missing something here?

I video taped my husband's band with xlr input for the sound, which I had no control over the loudness. When I loaded the video onto disk, it was very distorted sounding from be recorded too loud. Is there any tricks out there I can use to repair the sound on the video? I'm using CS5 but also have Final Cut Pro.

Thanks in advance!

I'm a fairly good budding videographer. I've made quite a few videos with a Sony DCR-SR and use iMovie '11 for editing. I just finished a video with good lip sync, but when I burned it the lip sync was off in 4 clips. Nothing I do will let me correct it. A trainer at the Apple Store said he had the same problem himself. Apple claims it rarely happens but does occasionally and freakishly. SOS

No questions asked. No "would you like to be part of our mailing list?"

I assume if you like the music, you'll be back.

This is a small site run by one composer: me. Selection is admittedly small at the moment,
but the whole idea behind the site is to make it as hassle-free to
license music as possible. Prices are affordable, within $18-$30 range.

I don't like hassles any more than you do. Song are sold as 320 kbps mp3 files. I assume you know how to convert mp3s into wavs, if your video software requires it, and edit music lengths to suit your needs. If you don't know how, I assume you're smart enough to google it and find out how.

Today is May 20th, 2010. To anyone reading this many moons from now, who knows if the site will change, but this is my policy at the moment.

I am interested in hearing from those who have had experience in recording SYNC sound on a separate digital sound recorder. How well did the sound stay in sync with the video? What measures were used to establish sync and to maintain sync? What issues arose in editing concerning sound sync?

Many of the questions posted on the sound forum could best be answered by shooting double system.

I love sound work almost as much as video. For some dumb reason Sound Design and Field Audio are always considered 'secondary' aspects of film and videomaking. Unless you plan on making a silent movie (good luck with that), you're going to have to pay attention to sound. Even at the highest ends of production you can still get bit in the backside by poor sound capture. Here is a video by Ben Slotover with some 'Tips for Good Sound'. Be advised, there is some salty language in spots so watch at your discretion.

When viewing fisinshed dvd's that I have made in studio 12, the sound is missing on certain parts of the film. The audio vanishes right when a new scene starts, and comes back in the next scene. This happens with a couple of scenes everytime I make a film.

But in studio - before rendering and stuff - the full soundtrack is there! I'm using a Samsung full HD hard disc camera and importing the clips to Studio via a folder in "my documents". I'm not using any fancy sound effects or editing, just dragging the clips onto Studio. It's really frustrating, because I keep burning faulty dvd's.

This would be a purchase for a professional organization, and while our budget -- like anyone's -- is somewhat limited, I am not looking for a bargain-basement deal. The sound is the most important thing.

If I put a mono microphone (which most are) into the stereo mic jack on a camcorder, won't sound only be recorded on one channel (i.e., come out of one ear when played back)? If that's correct, how do I correct that? I know Radio Shack and other stores sell mono-to-stereo adapters. Would that work or is there a better solution?

I need a decent Lavalier microphone that is $150.00 or under. It can be wired or wireless. Of course I'd prefer wireless, but I've heard for that price the quality would be much better on a wired mic.

I'm making 10 minute educational videos on parenting, self-esteem, etc. (a trainer giving a lesson with a flip chart, or role play with one other person, mostly indoors).

I have a Canon XH-A1, which has left and right XLR inputs. It has phantom power if I need it.

Please make suggestions. I've looked at Audio Technica AT803, ATPro70, ECM 44B. It's hard to tell what's good.

Hello fellow videomakers,

I've been a fan of this community for a couple of years now, but just now I'm beginning to actively participate in the daily interaction with all of you great minds. And I need your help! I've been doing some research on purchasing a digital camcorder but I feel like the more options I have the more lost I feel!

There is one thing I know for sure, though, the sound recording quality must be as best as possible and that has been one of the components I've paid close attention to when I've been looking for a camera. And on that note, there is an event that I'm planning on following and recording that takes place at night, outdoors with limited lighting! So here comes my problem ... what kind of camera is suitable for my "modest" desires!

I'm looking at a price range up to $500...but if I score from the lottery these days I won't mind an upgrade.

Thank you in advance for your kind suggestions

Happy filmmaking!

I have a video all set up, and sometimes when I render it I get a 'pop' or 'click' sound right as the file starts. This happens with many different videos. Or I can just load a video, select it and render it. CLICK/Pop.

In Vegas there is NO SOUND at that point in the audio track. I can mute the audio entirely and it is STILL there.

If I mute the VIDEO track, the sound is usually reduced. I say usually because I can render the file several times, using EXACT same seetings and area selected to render, and get different results. It happens even if I render, then re-render with a different output name. The files will have differences at the beginning.

When the sound appears - it never goes away simply by more renders.

I have tried this on two machines (both running WinXP - Home & Pro).

I have an XL-2 and a GL-2. Recently I bought a shotgun mic (using the beachtech adapter on the GL-2). On the XL-2 I notice more of the 'analog hiss' than on the GL-2. Any suggestions? I'm not using any type of direct box or adapter on the XL-2Â and the Shotgun mic uses XLR connections.

What is the best way to mic a boxing ring.  You need to be able to hear the slams, punches, and kicks.  What type of mic would work best and in what location?

Â

Also, if you are going to have live commentators (but the production is not live) what is the best way to record them so that you can put it over the video track later? Â What should I use to record their audio into?

Â

Thanks!Â

I would like to do humorous commentary professionally. I have been doing a 2 minute short for the last few weeks as practice.

I am filming on my digital still camera which is why the quality isn't good. I need to know what can be improved. Any feedback is appreciated.

I occasionally find myself videoing a concert on my Sony HVR-z1u. I usually shoot from the back of the room and have played with plugging a shotgun mic into one channel and placing a wireless lavalier mic near the performers and plugged into the other channel. This has been a big improvement over on-camera mic of course, but I would like to further improve the quality. I have considered replacing the lavalier with a handheld wireless. I am using a Sennheiser EK - SK 100 wireless set. I am also looking at digital recorders but am concerned about syncing audio and video.

Would the Sennheiser SKM 100 handheld be better? How much improvement would I get with a DR and at what price level would I need to look at to get a significant improvement? What are the syncing problems likely to be when editing with Final Cut Suite? Any other suggestions???

hello, i was always curious how in movies they'll have a long shot and you can hear the characters. I always wonder what kind of mic set up they used. I heard that Its a parabolic mic or voice over or wireless, but i think there is a different technique that no one knows about. If you got any insight please let me know.

thank you
