hi Guys,

i am working on a video for an outdoor concert that was held in the fall. i am wondering how i can fly some still photos into the video project ? there was a photographer at the concert, he gave me all his photo files. the effect i am trying to get is when i see the flash of his camera go off on the video , i would like to display that photo on the video, kinda like in the movies when the news paper spins into the film with the headline.

I'm a wedding photographer who has just started using her 5dMKii to make promotional videos and vlog entries on my blog. With some of my past projects in iMovie, there would be blockyness in the blacks and grays. So I went to apple and they told me the blockyness problem I was having was that iMovie was unavoidably compressing my files from my 5DmkII output during the transcoding, they suggested switching to Final Cut Pro. In asking a few of the videographer's I've worked with, none of them have mentioned working with FCP. They are either working with Vegas or Premier. FCP is considerably cheaper at $299 (although I see I may need motion and compressor if any of my clients ask for DVD movies with pictures). Sony Vegas Pro is $599.95. And Premiere Pro is $799. Vegas and Premiere have to have something that FCP doesn't for that difference in price right? I'm just wondering for me as a wedding photographer, who is only using this to do the occasional video editing, does it make sense to spend the extra $300-400 bucks. I don't want to buy FCP and then realize, d'oh actually in a month or two of using FCP I realize I want/need Vegas or Premiere. So for those who have used them all, what do you think of them and the differences between them? Also what's the learning curve like? I'll be coming from iMovie, which I have pushed to its editing limits, and I know CS4 Photoshop well. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Leapin' Lizards! I just did some speed tests of renders - Results are
posted below, but I will not waste time fully upgrading to Pro 11.

The advertised speed upgrades from Pro 9 to Pro 10 were fairly
minimal in practice, but they definitely found out how to harness GPU
power in Pro 11.

First I took a fully edited and color corrected (short) wedding
ceremony I did earlier this month. My source files were about 75% HDV
(as 25Mb/s .m2t files from my Z5U) and about 25% AVCHD (as 17Mb/s .MTS
files from my NEX5). My destination file was a 16Mb/s .m2ts (AVCHD)
file I use to compile blu-ray discs with.

Using Vegas Pro 10:

Project Length: 0:21:32 Time to Render from mixed AVCHD and HDV sources: 1:32:27

Using Vegas Pro 11:

Project length: 0:21:32 Time to render from mixed HDV and AVCHD sources: 0:43:31

I would guess that if I had straight cuts and not dissolves this
would be a MUCH faster render as it stutters a bit with every dissolve
transition. In any case it was still over 2x faster to render with
Vegas Pro 11.

   2. Second I did a render from one minute unedited clips.

Source file for clip 1 - AVCHD (as 17Mb/s .MTS file from my NEX5) and destination file was a 16Mb/s .m2ts file (AVCHD)

Using Vegas Pro 10:

Project Length: 0:01:00 Time to Render from AVCHD to AVCHD: 00:03:01

Using Vegas Pro 11:

Project Length: 0:01:00 Time to Render from AVCHD to AVCHD: 00:01:19

    3. Lastly I did another render from one minute clips:

Source file for clip 2 - HDV (as 25Mb/s .M2T file from my Z5U) and destination file was a 16Mb/s .m2ts file (AVCHD)

Using Vegas Pro 10:

Project Length: 0:01:00 Time to Render from HDV to AVCHD: 00:02:55

Using Vegas Pro 11:

Project Length: 0:01:00 Time to Render from HDV to AVCHD: 00:01:17

This is starting to be almost rendering at triple speed in Vegas Pro
11 compared to Pro 10 - in fact it seems that AVCHD is well on the way
to be able to be rendered in close to real time. If I had the newest
graphics cards out there, it just might happen. It was not long ago
that rendering DVD .mepg files took far longer than real time to render,
and do not worry about those in Vegas Pro 11. Vegas Pro 11 will create
your 720x480 MPEGs at 3x-4x real time!

For reference, my graphics card is a nVidia 1GB GTX285 - a dinosaur compared to the newest nVidia cards!

I bought Liquid Edition Pro 6 with an upgrade at just about the time it was being discontinued ( as it turns out ). It was a struggle for me to try to learn to navigate the beast, so I reasoned I would get my feet wet with the Pinnacle software and then make a transition to Liquid. Now, some years later, I'm getting the feeling that any further effort invested in Liquid would essentially be a waste of time; and perhaps I should be scoping out a more current, widely used NLE platform. What say you?

Hi. Guys I just purchased a Sony Vegas Studio HD Platinum software. I'm looking for some tutorial help. Anyone know a college, high school, in Los Angeles county that gives some hands on tutorial on this software? It seams like the only editing software tutorials available today is for final cut pro (College of the Canyons and Glendale college) I would be willing to meet and pay someone to give me a couple of hours of help.

Hi, not sure the best place to put this question but I'm looking for confirmation that I'm using the best settings at each stage to produce the highest quality DVD. I'm recording hockey games, editing the video, then burning to DVD. Here are the details:

Recording using Vixia HF200 HD camcorder. Set to MXP, highest quality, 24 mbps.

Copying *.mts files to PC and using Sony Vegas 9.0 to edit.

Rendering to *.mpg and using DVD Architect to create/burn DVD.

Alternatively, are there more efficient ways to do this and get the same results? Such as using the FXP mode to record and use less memory if it will retain the same quality?

Thanks in advance for any advice and guidance!

I have been creating videos for Youtube ever since I was in 6th grade and back then the format requirements were pretty simple. Only 5-10 formats were accepted and the file had to be under 100mb long and under 10 minutes long. Since then Youtube has slowly upgraded and expanded on the possibility of formats and sizes it accepts. Throughout time certain formats were considered the best way to upload, for a long time it was .mp4 and .flv since Youtube would have to transcode the video the least amount to make it playable on the players.

Now that Youtube accepts resolutions up to 4K and file sizes of 2gb (it may even be more now, I'm not sure), pretty much everything will work. So here comes the question, what format can Sony Vegas 9 produce that will transcode smoothly to Youtube and provide the best viewing quality there (Not locally on the computer).

I have always been a simple wmv fan, since it provides decent file sizes while maintaining a pretty decent picture. Lately though, with HD footage becoming more and more prevalent; I have noticed that Youtube and WMV haven't been playing together too well. WMV can still produce great HD footage, but when Youtube transfers it on it's own servers, the quailty is a disaster.

Youtube used to state in it's help area that MP4 was the best format. So I tried the simple .mp4 (Mainconcept AVC, AAC) that is provided with Vegas 9 and which is pretty bare with customization. I made it 1280x720 (and I realize now I never changed the bitrate) and the result was watchable but the quality was noticeably bad. So I switched over to the XDCAM XE .MP4 option that is also provided which provided a much better looking video on my computer. ON Youtube though, it seemed to transcode into almost identical video as the first HD WMV I uploaded.

FLV sadly is not supported by Vegas that I am aware of.

SO what do you personally think is the best format to upload to Youtube is? What codec allows for the least amount of transcoding produces the best looking video?

Please keep in mind I want to be able to do this natively on Vegas unless downloading some other program is really worth it. Also, I'm a youtube junkie so I don't want to switch to another service.

I run a Final Cut-based studio. We also have a membership service in which we provide information and assistance to producers who are creating  and marketing special interest and how-to videos. Many of my members and clients use Sony Vegas so I want to outfit a basic editing system with Vegas Platinum so that I can better support them.

Can anyone provide a recommendation on the minimum practical hardware for running Vegas Platinum? I know what it says on the box, but reality and specs are often quite different. I'd like to hear from actual users.

Has anyone tried running Vegas on a Macbook running Windows XP?

Hello,

I am new to this site as well as video recording and editing..so please forgive my ignorance. I record with the Sony HDR XR100 and edit with Sony Vegas Pro 9 (i also have AfterEffects, but havent quite learned how to use it)..anyway.. I am trying to get the best quality that i can, using the limited equipment that i have..I have a couple of general questions..

1. Is there a difference (quality loss etc.) between using a usb to transfer video from my camera to my storage device as opposed to using a firewire to transfer video?

2. Are there any other elements that affect the quality of a video other than the lighting..the camera..and the rendering settings.

3. Are there specific rendering settings that should be used to better compliment the type of camera that i use?

4. Are there any plugins or additional software that i can buy to reduce video noise or improve quality to my video?

5. What is the best setting for high quality audio.

I think thats it..thx in advance for any help

I recently purchased a Canon Vixia HF S11 and am having difficulty, to say the least, editing the video. I also just purchased Sony Vegas Movie Studio, only to find out that it has great difficulty in editing Canon video. I have uploaded my files to my computer (.mts files) and can view them in Vegas but the footage is choppy and grainy. I read on a forum about NewBlue Upshift program that converts the files to .m2t This does work, however the cost of the full program is around $80 and is about the cost for Sony Vegas itself. I am looking for another program that would allow me to edit Canon's videos that is relatively problem free and not overly expensive. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!!!

Hi! I'm new here and I would like you guys to give me some ideas on how to make The Canon Vixia's 24p (through pulldown) to look even more like film because my videos have that sort of blurriness that you find in film but they don't run as smoothly. The image is great but isn't there a plug-in for Sony Vegas 8.0 Pro to make everything more "dreamy" and soft? Thankz

I am working and trying to be a filmmaker and I've been reading a lot about filmmaking so I bought a couple of books and I can say I'm a little bit knowlegeable about what to do as a director but I don't have a lot of money to rent a Genesis or a Panavison camera so I have to work with what I have. I'll keep you updated about my first effeort. I wrote 2 scripts, 1 es suppsed to be a short and the other almost a feature lengh film (maybe 70 minutes long). I hope to start shooting by July so any help would be more than welcome. :)

Another thing..do you think I should make the whole white balancing process in-camera or doing the post-production?

I have been working with Sony Vegas Pro 9 for a little while now and am working on a project with talking heads, having a person's head overlay a moving and walking Spartan soldier in Halo 3. I have been able to accomplish this by finding "linear" (unchanging speed of motion) for the spartan's head which I can add keyframes - a very slow and tedius process.

Is it possible to apply some sort of "Automation" with track motion by moving the head overlay in real-time along with the spartan's head? For the best precision, I am also looking to do this while the track is playing in slow motion.

I've recently downloaded a trial version of Sony Vegas Pro v. 9. As a user of Cyberlink PowerDirector 7, Sony Vegas succeeded in showing a great impression. Though the controls are somewhat intimidating, the features are a set of great things to see with the first NLE that I work with. I have also came scross an "HD Enhancement" tool for increasing video resolution in PowerDirector v. 8. Is this possible in Sony Vegas Pro 9, or possibly via Sony Vegas plug-in that is free or relatively cheap?

Is there a tool for increasing a video's resolution to HD quality via Sony Vegas, or possibly with any one of its plug-ins?

Hey all,

I'm working on a video that's about 40 minutes long. The first 20 or so minutes was edited by someone else using Vegas Pro 8. It landed in my hands in the form of a rendered MPEG-2 file, which I brought into Final Cut Pro 5 and continued to work on. It wasn't until I exported and burned to DVD that I discovered horrible combing and/or interlacing type effects, which are only visible when played on a TV.

Although I have all the original footage on DV tapes, I'm loathe to go back and re-do the first 20 minutes (which is the only portion with the combing problem). Is there any other way I can solve this problem?

I've considered re-rendering the MPEG-2 footage in Vegas to another format, then re-importing that to the FCP project...might that work? Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance

I'm new to making videos. I took a class a know some very basic stuff about shooting and editing. I worked with the programs Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro. I'd like to buy my own set of videomaking equipment. All I know is that you need a Deck, a Camera, and a Computer with the right programs. If anyone has any suggestions on what kind of Camera/Deck/Computer thats good for beginners to start making movies please let me know.
