maybe try compressing your footage so your computer can handle it. If you are going to compress the video for web in the end this might be a good idea. This would also be a free thing to try, unless you are looking for a reason to upgrade?

Click on the Transitions tab and select the 3D Fly In/Out group and see if one of those will do ya.

If not, use a separate track for the still and use Track Motion (3D Source Alpha instead of Source Alpha as the compositing mode) and you can make it spin (rotation) and zoom in (Position).

hi Guys,

i am working on a video for an outdoor concert that was held in the fall. i am wondering how i can fly some still photos into the video project ? there was a photographer at the concert, he gave me all his photo files. the effect i am trying to get is when i see the flash of his camera go off on the video , i would like to display that photo on the video, kinda like in the movies when the news paper spins into the film with the headline.

There's nothing wrong with Sony Vegas. The newness of your computer isn't particularly relevant, either. What matters is how much RAM it has, how fast the hard drives are, etc.

HDV and AVCHD are extremely computer intense formats. What many of us do -- I'm a Vegas user, too -- is create an intermediary file, using a utility called NeoScene, and there are others as well. This will allow you to work with .avi files, then translate them back into a hi-def format if you want to create a Blue-ray DVD.

I suggest you go over to the Sony Vegas editor's forum and search the archives for threads that discuss slow response on playback and ways to eliminate this. You'll find a great deal of information and, once you've joined the forum, lots of help with Vegas or Movie Studio from forum members using these programs.

For Vegas, I use the "AVCHD 1920x1080-60i" preset. This renders it to m2ts, which is the blu ray stream (you wont need to re-render the video when loading it into a BD compiling program like DVD-A), but you can also do JUST the video stream if you do the "Blu-ray 1920x1080-60i, 16 Mbps video stream" and it will render the video only .avc file. I prefer the .m2ts route as it saves a copy of the audio with the video stream for easy access backup, HOWEVER, when you compile a blu-ray, you SHOULD ALWAYS render out the audio separately as an ac3-pro file and replace that as the audio stream when building your disc. This way your audio will not have to be re-rendered when compiling, and you have full control over keeping it as pure as possible.

If you want to keep a high quality master copy on your hard disc, render as a .mxf file (35 MB/s VBR, or 50MB/s CBR).

Yes indeed, H.264 Blu-ray (MPEG-4 AVC) is a good codec for Blu-ray, and Vegas Pro 10 should be quite capable. Though this article uses Adobe Encore, the practices may still fit your system.

http://www.videomaker.com/article/14211/

We use Blu-rays for archiving purposes, who knows, they could be the last physical blank media for us to hold onto, keep up the good work!

Having said that, I've never heard of the device you mentioned until I read your post.
You're better off with FCP or Premiere since you're a Mac user. Vegas is PC only so you'd have to make a Win Partition on your main drive and deal with Bootcamp. I've got friends who use macs and did the bootcamp thing to use Vegas and they all say it works better on a PC rig.

If you call like, tomorrow, you MIGHT be able to beg Adobe to sell you Production Premium at the discounted price that expired yesterday. They might lose out of $850, but it would make you a long-term customer, which would be a win for them in the long run...

It's a shame you didn't ask this a few days ago. Adobe Premiere Premium was only $850 up until yesterday (it's usually $1700). You would have had everything you'd need for quite some time.

FCP used to be very capable, up through FCP7. Now that they have released FCP X, it's more for consumers/prosumers, in my opinion. However, it might be enough for you since you work by yourself. Basically, FCP X doesn't play nice with other programs (no XML, OMF, etc. exporting), it doesn't allow for monitoring via external monitor, media management is different (and seems clunky in my opinion), it doesn't handle codecs natively, and there's a whole bunch of other problems that make pros hate it. But you said yourself you will only be editing occasionally, and it sounds like you'll be working by yourself. So it might be fine for you. I can't say much more than that. I've only read about it. I haven't bothered to buy it.

Adobe has come a long way and is very capable these days. Apparently it works flawlessly with the other Adobe programs, too. It works will with all codecs natively, which is a big plus. And depending on the computer model you own, you may be able to take advantage of the GPU acceleration and 64-bit processing. I just got the Premiere Premium bundle the other day and am looking forward to digging in.

You sound like you're on a Mac, so I don't think you'll be able to use Sony Vegas. I don't think they make it for Mac...

I'm a wedding photographer who has just started using her 5dMKii to make promotional videos and vlog entries on my blog. With some of my past projects in iMovie, there would be blockyness in the blacks and grays. So I went to apple and they told me the blockyness problem I was having was that iMovie was unavoidably compressing my files from my 5DmkII output during the transcoding, they suggested switching to Final Cut Pro. In asking a few of the videographer's I've worked with, none of them have mentioned working with FCP. They are either working with Vegas or Premier. FCP is considerably cheaper at $299 (although I see I may need motion and compressor if any of my clients ask for DVD movies with pictures). Sony Vegas Pro is $599.95. And Premiere Pro is $799. Vegas and Premiere have to have something that FCP doesn't for that difference in price right? I'm just wondering for me as a wedding photographer, who is only using this to do the occasional video editing, does it make sense to spend the extra $300-400 bucks. I don't want to buy FCP and then realize, d'oh actually in a month or two of using FCP I realize I want/need Vegas or Premiere. So for those who have used them all, what do you think of them and the differences between them? Also what's the learning curve like? I'll be coming from iMovie, which I have pushed to its editing limits, and I know CS4 Photoshop well. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

I forgot to mention an important detail. Both versions I was comparing (Vegas 10 Pro and Vegas 11 Pro) were both 64-bit versions - so this is not a 32 bit to 64 bit comparison, it is truly 64 bit to 64 bit comparison.

As for playback during editing, from the amount of time I have been able to use it (have not done a complete project on it yet), the preview seems to actually be able to stay at "Full" rather than having to keep resorting to "Half" like Vegas 10 always did to get the video to play smooth with a couple effects added.
