I just saw a great video comparing twixtor and adobe premier pro's applications for slowmo:

http://eduardoangel.com/2011/12/27/how-much-is-slow-mo-worth-twixtor-v s-adobe-premiere-pro-cs5/

A lot of people are still experiencing problems with twixtor, but once it
is rendered it looks pretty damn good! Is anyone using other slowmo
applications that might not be as expensive as twixtor?

I've offered to video tape youth hockey games (my son's team) and I want to playback the tapes to show slow-motion or stop-motion without having to pull the raw footage into my NLE (Vegas Pro). Is there a software package that will allow me to accomplish this on my laptop (at the ice arena, usually). The coach will discuss what he sees on the tape, and I will run the laptop to accomidate his coaching (simple slo-mo and reverse-motion should be all that is needed). We see this all the time with professional sports, but I don't have the resources (money) to do this for a high school team. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Your camera doesn't shoot 15000fps or even 1000fps. What you're looking at is the shutter speed (although, video cameras don't have an actual shutter).

Your camera only shoot up to 30fps.

I'm also curious on the topic. I shoot with a Canon XH-A1 but mainly at 60fps and for any slow motion shots I integrate the amazing abilities of motion, but with my camera's ability to shoot at ridiculous fps, why not take advantage of it? I want to import high quality slow motion around 1000fps (my camera goes up to 15,000 according to the dial settings) but when i import video and slow it down, it looks just like normal 60fps shots on FCP. Do I have to import it at a different setting than normal film? Thanks!

Some features are easier than others to add. NOW We can start the video playback 3 seconds before the jump / trick switching to slo-mo on the fly then on completion; back to full speed. The skateboard tricks looked good that way.

Jacob,

You want to use a 1/120th shutter at 60fps because that gives you a 180 degree shutter. This is how a film camera works to give the most fluid motion possible. That means that there is an equal amount of time between the frame being exposed and the time in between frames. You basically double whatever your fps is and that give you your shutter speed.

Now this does not mean that you couldn't have a 90 degree or 45 degree shutter. Like Rob was saying, that would give you a different look; in this case choppy because your shutter is closed for a longer period of time than it is open.

Awe, okay I understand now. Yeah and speaking of Twixtor, I've been using Motion for the slo-mo stuff: it analyzes two frames and creates a frame to place in between making a clip capable of super slo-mo. That plus shooting at 1/120 at 60 fps I think I'll have some cool effects for the next music video I'm shooting haha

Even if you weren't shooting for slo-mo, I wouldn't go below 1/120th if you're shooting at 60fps. When shooting 30fps, the shutter is usually 1/60. At 24fps the shutter is 1/48. So it makes sense to shoot at 1/120 when shooting 60fps when you're shooting for real-time playback.

For slo-mo, I'd go way faster than 1/120. I've shot with the 7D at 1/1250. We were going for a choppy look rather than preppy for slo-mo, but the footage would work well it slowed down with Twixtor or something.

I have been using a Canon T2i and occasionally shoot action scenes that are planned to be editing in slow motion. I was just told by a friend that if I film at 60 fps, I need to keep the shutter speed at 120+ to be able to do the slow motion efficiently with good quality. Why is this?

You put on the Golf tournament so why not provide the video promotional opportunities. How great is that..

SAMPLE of the Rotary Golf video demonstration at Osoyoos June 2010 (180 short video clips)

http://www.youtube.com/my_playlists?p=13A340479871BAC3

The DVD version is much Better. Higher resolution, Instant switching between mini clips and the last 3 seconds (the Swing) in Super Slow Motion..

This year we will have camcorders at 3 or more holes for even better coverage. The pros will be jealous. With 6 camcorders there will be 600+ video clips, that amount will still easily fit on a DVD.

The SPECIAL playback software recognizes a short-short video(2 secs or less) as a break record. So within 15 minutes of leaving the course, the Big Clubhouse screens will be up and playing random-by-foursome (by hole). Nobody can do this faster or easier.

Have the sponsor contribute a Mpg video or 2 to pitch for their latest and greatest NEW product!! These DVD's will be keepers for all the participants...

P.S. they loved the playback

What a cool screen saver, video of your friends at some of your favourite golf holes.

Hi fellow videographers. I am relatively new to video making. I have just purchased this camcorder and very happy with the product. During my research into this camcorder I checked one video on YouTube that showed the cam producing slow motion but it did not show you how to do it. Anybody on the forum who can help me produce slow motion video?

This last summer we took 2 camcorders and my laptop to the golf course. We learned a lot and now can do an even better job in the same amount of time. The initial problem with our playback was that we showed each short clip then that 3 to 15 second clip in slow motion. The 15 sec videos were just too long and the audience lost interest. A quick fix to the program and now just the last 3 seconds (the swing) of video is played back in slow motion. Having 2 camcorders the videos needed to be synched. I'm writing a quickie program to merge the catalog file. One other feature added was the ability to play back the videos by 4some. As each group comes to the tee shoot a short short video of less than 2 seconds. This creates a break record when doing the catalog function. I can use the new merge option to insert a large font slowed print of each players name(have list day before) just prior to the video play. A future option will be to allow for video from camcorder #1 to play on large screen #1 and Video from camcorder #2 in time with each other.

So within 10 to 12 minutes after leaving the course the golfers are seeing the random playback of the round they just finished. A large font displays the player name. The view from behind plays at normal speed then the last 3 seconds play in slow motion. Then the side view camcorder video plays. followed by the last 3 seconds (the swing) in slow motion. Then the next player in that foursome.

Once that is playing. The DVD copies can start to be burned. For a fee.

They loved the videos at both events. That was the part we missed videoing. They really enjoyed the show.

Anyway there is a thread about "Digital Video Showdown" where everybody gets called out on the sad state of Digital Video. Come on over if you dare.

I recently made a short fan video based on the Ok Go "End Love" music video, with nutcrackers! This is a stop motion, with a few slow motion clips, and some new jingle bells and bells added in the background. Before you criticize too much, this was my first stop-motion animation ever attempted and is meant to be a direct copy of the original video. So saying this, I am not exactly posting this looking for critiques because this was not too much of a serious project and was unoriginal. Just figured I would post it for you to see!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ycttux8Uhc&hd=1

and watch the original first if you haven't seen it it before!

Hi,

I think what you are seeing in that clip is time postering, not sloMo. Time postering is an effect in Adobe Premiere and probably other editors as well where a frame is held for a brief period, say, a quarter of a second. What you see is a series of stills going by fairly fast, but taking the same length of time as the original clip. That's why the sound isn't sped up or slowed down.

It looks like there are some other effects in there, too.

Incidentally, having performers sing and play faster won't work unless they can also perform in a proportionally higher key. That is unlikely. There is software that can change the speed of the audio without changing the pitch, but it works best only over small ranges.

Hallo!
I'am a new one here. first of all sorry for my bad english :)
So, I'am not sure it's a right place to ask about that (I mean Speacial Effect section) but...

Is anyone know how to make a video effect (or this is filming technique) which is looks like slow motion in real time. For example "Nightwish" music video "Wish I Had An Angel" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcyTR5mEC_E)
Of course, I found one tip how to make that, it's when you speed up music to 150%, then shoot the artists with this fast music and then in editing software slow down this video. Hmm, probably it's works, but maybe here is some other options how to make that?

Below is some footage shot at 1080i (60i). Using Vegas Pro 8, it shows the normal clip, the same clip using ctrl-drag to go from 4 to 12 seconds, and the same clip using a velocity envelope set to a constant 33%.

So just ctrl-dragging or using velocity envelopes will not copy any frames if I'm only going down to 50%, right?

From what I read in the FCP forum, in that program even if you have something that is 60fps and you use its built-in slow motion utilities it would still just copy frames, whereas if you actually changed the frame rate it would give smooth slow motion. So Vegas is smart enough to not have to do this?

I've used both the ctrl-drag and velocity envelopes on 60i and 30i footage - it works fine for me.

The ctrl-drag is easier but the envelope is way more functional and gives you excellent control. Just remember to resize the clip after setting envelope points to see where it will start/end.

Both if you want it slower than half speed. Of course that will create a stagger again.

I'm editing using Sony Vegas Pro 9. I also have After Effects CS4 for motion graphics, titles, etc.

After having some problems with my slow motion looking choppy with 30fps footage (since it was just copying the same frame to create the slow motion), I was told the best solution was just to shoot at a higher frame rate.

So, now I'm shooting at 60fps (progressive). However, what's the proper method for actually creating slow motion from this? I've seen in some FCP forums some people recommending that you actually change the FPS of the clip to create slow motion. Is this the proper approach, or should I be using Vegas Pro's built-in slow motion utilities like ctrl-dragging the length of the clip, or using velocity envelopes?

Rob, thanks for the motion compensation tip!

The two half frames in 60i are taken 1/60th of a second apart; they do not refer to the same instant in time. The deinterlacing simply converts each half frame to a full frame by filling in the missing lines. That's a better approach than trying to guess the whole frame.

For a 60p output, both the half frames are used to produce two full frames (the full temporal resolution of 60i is used). For 30p output, one of the half frames is discarded, while the other one is converted into a full frame, or some kind of frame blending is used. 60i itself is not the same thing as 30p because the even and odd fields in 60i are shifted in time with respect to each other.

The advantage of this approach is that only the spatial resolution is interpolated, not the temporal resolution. So there are no motion artifacts.

When I play back the converted progressive file frame by frame, there are 60 frames in each second, and they are all distinct, as they should be. Even without the motion compensation setting the video looks very good (that's why I didn't bother turning the other things on). I'll turn it on to see if there is any improvement.

A similar technique is available for JES deinterlacer, described in its documentation.

Btw there are other places on the web which suggest this (search Compressor 60i to 60p):

http://forums.skateperception.com/index.php?showtopic=154566

Anyway, I've used this and the (40%) slow motion is very smooth and high quality. Of course, the best approach is to shoot 60p if available. I do that on my HMC150 which has a 720 60p mode. I use the 60i to 60p conversion for my HF200.

"Dragging a 60i file onto this with produce a true 60fps progressive video. The idea here is to convert each interlaced frame into a progressive frame, so that you have 60 unique frames per second."

An interlaced frame consists of 2 fields, which is why 60i is 29.97. If you were to only de-interlace, you get 30p. The setting you create de-interlaces and creates a 30p to 60p conversion at the same time. You are pulling an extra 30 frames out of no where (not that optical flow in Motion doesn't do that).

Also, when converting 30 to 60, you also need to change the Rate Conversion setting to "Best (High Quality Motion Compensated), which you forgot to mention.
