Hi there, am loving the synopsis of this movie and look forward to watching it at some point.

I'm a student and for my A2 practical I am going to attempt to make a film trailer similar to yours, however I don't have to shoot the flm obviously. My film synopsis idea is similar to yours in that it involves gangsters, crime and drama, I was therefore wondering if you had any tips for me on producing a film teaser trailer on this genre, for my coursework. Thanks a lot. Charlie.

True that. Still need a camera with decent lux or ISO to work with 'short lights'. But you are right about what can be done. I would rather a rook roll with D4N if he/she didn't have someone experienced with night shooting at their back.

With so many on the cheap battery powered options today, that's just not the case anymore. Toting some Moles and a generator back in the day could talk some directors into shooting in daylight for audio reasons alone. Today it's as easy as skipping a light kit and heading to the woods with cheap bicycle headlights from walmart and some regular old printing paper for bounce and diffusion. Duct tape can be your stands. lol

damn truth. Creativity will trump budget restrictions everytime.

"Faking nigh shoots on the daylight just can't be pulled off due to harsh shadowing that you'd not have in the dark."

That's why so many flicks shot that way always have a Full Moon shot dropped in to suspend belief. I don't mind shooting at night if the tools and power (hard or portable) are available. Most times though you're short both.

I guess if you're into the whole Clash of the Titans vibe (the original).

I like shooting at night. My lighting revolves around the mood I'm wanting, just like lighting during daylight hours. I like small batter powered LEDs a lot for obvious reasons and a little diffusion and warm gelling will cure all that ails ya with em.

Faking nigh shoots on the daylight just can't be pulled off due to harsh shadowing that you'd not have in the dark. If shooting in pitch blackness, man you'll be surprised how far a little bounce goes.

Best lighting for a 'nighttime scene' is the Sun! Much easier to shoot clean (no filters) 'Day for Night' and darken the footage in post. If you must shoot at night, use either a camera with serious low-light capabilities (minimal or no gain) like one of the Canon or Nikon HDSLR's (6400 ISO or better.)

Without a sensitive camera, your primary alternative is to use lights, maybe lots of them depending on the size of your location. If you don't have access to AC power on location, then you're going to have to bring your own power. That means generators and enough fuel to keep them running during the entire time you need them. Here's a link describing how to determine what size generator you'll need.

http://www.galttech.com/research/household-DIY-tools/best-generators.php

Part of the equation you'll use is; how large a scene you're planning to light / how many lights x wattage required = Total wattage required. If you're lighting a large area for example, you'll need a bank of 1000w lights.

There are also ways to use DIY gear like worklights and such, instead of dedicated film/video lighting. They'll work fine and be cheaper, but since they were never intended for such work, there will be a number of safety and creative lighting control issues you'll have to deal with.

If you're not ready, willing or able to deal with any of the above when it comes to night shooting then my suggestion is save yourself the headaches and shoot Day for Night.

Herr Chesser,

Yeah, contest adverts are often a PIA because there's soooo much room for scams and chicanery to envelope eager filmmakers. Legitimate film festivals have enough of a scam element to them as is, but when you start getting stuff from overseas the likelyhood of it being a rip-off reaches near certainty.

In this case, I checked it out and though there is no upfront entry fee two things set off my 'Scam Sense'. One, it's an overseas based contest in Africa and they're paying the potential prize in Euros (without an entry fee?) Second, you can't just pull up the rules which is supposed to be on a downloadable pdf without entering into the contest. Whether it's just a bad set up on their website, or the business end of a cyberscam, it's not worth messing with. Not to mention they say nothing about whether they'll sponsor a trip for festival winners to attend the award ceremony. Any film fest worth their salt will do that for at least one international winner

So as I said, "Filmmaker Beware". And I agree, that VM needs to setup some solid guidelines for these contests.

This area of moderating give me a headache, Mr. Porter. I wish there were a better way to research and define the entities or groups involved, the veracity of their promotion and the legality of their claims. But I am at a loss. I've canned a few that simply did not seem to pan out when checking the links, etc. Others, I simply cannot feel positive about them, but don't want to discourage Videomaker Forum participants from potentially positive contest experiences.

Your warnings are always good for readers to heed ... It's just too difficult to assess the validity of these various contest calls. Wish Videomaker could/would make it a primary concern and seriously follow up or establish some SOLID guidelines for anyone posting film or video contests.

MovieScreams Horror Fest is now open for submissions. We are seeking short horror films and trailers from independent filmmakers. MovieScreams Horror Fest is an online horror festival and cable Television series dedicated to the screening of independent and classic horror movies. This is a Public Access Television series. Airing Sundays at Midnight. Comcast Cable channel 24 - People TV in Atlanta, GA.

Inspired by the passion of independent filmmaking! MovieScreams, features short horror films by those brave enough to grab a video camera and make their own movies. Any film between 1-30 minutes will classify as a short. This is not a contest so no entry fee is involved. There is no deadline.

Submitting a horror film to the MovieScreams! Horror Fest is free. Simply email us the video link to your film, along with the title and synopsis. If selected it will show up in the list of films on the main page of our website. We promote the horror film genre and provide a platform for filmmakers to screen their work. Film festivals have always been very supportive of alternative and fringe indies. Unfortunately, the horror genre often get left out of festival programs. How will we discover the next Peter Jackson if festivals do not support young filmmakers who create fantastic visions?

Yeah. I have already found a couple DVX100's for around 1800, and I would definitely be looking into new lens' as well. Thanks for your feedback.

Yea, the DVX100 is a real good camera. You could probably find a used DVX100B around your price range. When you get some more money, look into getting a 35mm lens adapter for that camera too, like the SGPro or the Letus35. They give your image a shallower depth of field resulting in a more "film" look.Â

Hi to all the film makers and entrepenuers in the film industry. I myself am a small time film maker, and moving to the United States from Bolivia, I started all over, to try and direct and produce my own ideas. All I have now is a small handycam, and am looking to buy a much better camera. My budget is low for now, but I am looking at around $2,000. I have been told that the Panasonic DVX100 is a great camera for someone on that budget. Could anyone please let me know what their thoughts are. Thanks so much. The majority of my work is documentaries or short films. Very artistic and poetic, I tend to stick to alternate angles and different graphics for my films. Please let me know what your proffesional opinions are. Thank you so much,

Hi,

I'm new to Videomaker and am totally unsaavy when it comes to technology. What professional video cameras do you recommend? I'd like to spend around $3,000. I'd say my max is $5-6K. I am going to be using it to make a documentary and several short films so I'd like quality that would provide me with footage professional enough to submit to film festivals. If I need to spend more that 3k, that is ok.

Also, is HD the best and newest out now? I want to have whatever is most up to date.

Thanks!
