Hi. Im a GL-2 newbie. I just picked one up for $500 and would like advice on where to go for good GL-2 gossip/communication/advice. I hope I'm here already.

Since it was used and it came with a Panasonic ME tape, I assume I should continue with the same brand and type (except all I can find are AME tapes...I hope that is okay).

I live in Corvallis, Oregon--far away from production companies that might actually give videography seminars--so, I'm looking for good online tutorials. Any suggestions?

Battery question--the one that came with the camera holds its charge for just a bit over an hour. I expect a good 2 hour battery to hold a charge for 1.5 (with display screen on). Are there recommended brands I ought to look for or just go for whatever fits the ol' vid-cam? (and, what brands should I stay away from) (can you say?)

I'm filming my first wedding tomorrow (11-11-11 at 11:00am). Wish me luck!

As Videoman says, but also there is the potential for development of a huge personal library of living scenes like V-man so poetically noted. Given the time, proper equipment and love for say, nature or even planes, trains and automobiles; also sunsets, sunrises, moon and clouds, trees, birds, waterways, waterfalls, beaches, oceans, rivers and lakes, storms ...

... the subject matter is virtually endless. The beauty of this is if you capture enough variations of, well even flags for example: flags with clouds in the background, birds flying past, a jet in the background, HUGE flags and miniature flags, flags in groups, stand alone (you get the idea). You develop a portfolio of video clips of these and can eventually offer an extensive selection that will market well.

The things in life that you love and enjoy, from puppies and parrots to babies and mature adults, and everything else that hammers our senses on a daily basis, can be rewarding and instructional at the same time while building your experience and at the same time developing footage that somebody somewhere would be willing to pay for to use.

Ahmad, shooting landscapes with a still camera gives you one moment in time. Shooting the same landscape in video will give you motion, the motion of the camcorder in relation to the scenery, or you can capture the effect of wind on the trees, hear the rustling of leaves, spot a bird flying through the frame, etc. Some say that audio is at least half of the video experience. In photography there is no audio unless you create a slide show with an audio bed underneath it. This is actually simulating video! I find that shooting video at non-event situations (landscapes, wildlife, etc.) to be very satisfying, although not usually as income-producing as shooting events. As you develop your skills with the still camera, you will also be developing skills that will carry over to video if you choose to go in that direction. A lot of us who video have some background with still photography. keep shooting.

Looking for a producer/director for a training video for web delivery. Low budget (hey, its better than no budget), so I'm looking for a one-man-band that can cast, direct, shoot, and handle post. OK, maybe a 2-man band. Looking for creative visionary talent who will bring fresh ideas to liven up the sometimes entertaining but potentially sleep-inducing talking head that I am. I'll be in LA in mid-November to actually get this done. Interested? Got reel? I'm rabranch32 at gmail

I just purchased a Canon GL-2 on eBay, with a long list of extras, for $900.00. I e-mailed the seller with several questions and his answers convinced me this was a good, usable camera. I shopped eBay listings for the last several months and there are any number of GL-2s for sale at this price or lower.

Tommy,

I wouldn't sell to B&H. They're going to lowball you since they're going to want to make a profit when they sell it.

I honestly don't think your lenses are that valuable, but it's nice that you have a Pelican case, some extra batteries, and a light. You're wireless mics are probably useless now that the gov't has taken a lot of frequencies...i think.

I think you should be happy with $1000 for your set up. Post Craig's List ad in other nearby cities for $1200 with the expectation of people trying to negotiate down to $1000. Someone will bite, just watch out for scams.

I have a Canon GL2 with a bunch of extras that I'm trying to sell but I haven't had any luck through ebay or Craigslist. I've had the camera and equipment for about a year and the camera is still in excellent condition as I've only put on maybe 10-12 hours on it. I was asking for $1200-$1400 for it. Do I need to lower my price point more? I've got a Pelcan 1620 carrying case, Merkury optics titanium grade wide angle lens and a telephoto lens, lens filters, Sony wireless microphone system, and 3 extended life batteries, and a Canon camera mount light w/battery.  I've tried B&H and I'm gonna lose money just shipping what I have to them, and they don't even want everything. Does anyone know of any other possible solutions as to how or where I can sell my equipment? Also, I live in Houston, TX if that helps.Â

MrAnderson,

From what you describe, your cam's done. You might be able to send it to Canon for repair of the malfunctioning LCD and eyepiece, but it will probably cost more than the camera's worth. Though they still sell GL2's, Canon figures it's cheaper for you to just buy another cam, preferably one of their newest models. If you look around, you might find a used one cheap. Otherwise, buying a new one is your best bet if you wish to continue using that particular model of camera.

Hi,

I have a 7 year old GL-2 that can no longer capture. The LCD and the eye piece looks like a green to magenta gradient. When I press record the magenta and green gradient is recorded. When I put in a pre-recorded tape it looks completely normal.

Lately I've been putting up videos shot with DSLR rigs. Well just to show that traditional ENG style cam's are by no means out of the picture yet, here's one by Mirko Faienza called "My Grandfather's Garden" It was shot with a Panasonic AG-HPX500 and the stock 17.5 x lens. It's is a bit pricier rig than the average VM reader is thinking about getting, but it does show you don't necessarily need full on shallow DOF to get great imagery. Enjoy.

Ophelia,

Off the top of my head it looks like he used transparency overlay (i.e. the 'snow clip' is laid over the following clips.) Since it was lit snow on a black sky, it wouldn't have been hard to do. Just another example of simplicity being beautiful.

Film,

I agree. The thing I want newbs and intermedi8s to understand that until you master the basics you won't be able to take advantage of advanced capabilities like DOF and Selective focus. Not on purpose anyway.

Sarge,

I'm glad you and the others are enjoying this video. Too often I hear people get bent over having to watch something in B&W. Shooting in B&W and making it look good is in some ways more difficult than shooting in color. Light, Shadow, Tone and Contrast are all you've got to work with and if you can't adjust your video is going to look awful.

Beautiful. The great depth-of-field possibilities in the new DSLRs like the Mark II are fantastic. I think one can certainly masterfully control a lesser camera, but I also think that the the DOF and selective focus that is realized with better equipment is the one thing that would make many great videos greater.

Thanks for bringing B&W back into focus - haha - (a still photographer's joke). Personally, I like B&W best, and it always shows the caliber of talent of the shooter (or lack thereof...). This is probably a noob question, but do you know how Mr. Bloom created the transition where the falling snow fades and then overlaps the next scenes?

My main hope is that any beginners or intermediates will look at this stuff and not get 'punked out' feeling that they couldn't possibly do well with what they have. It's not that Phillip did anything spectacular, in fact the shooting is really simple and he used the basics many of the regular forum contributors always hear me harping on. This video is startling because with his command of the basics, he took a great camera and made a beautiful memory of a night in Prague. I guarantee the guy (or anyone else with similar skills) can do the same thing with a lesser camera. Now, obviously the imagery will not be the same because of the capabilities of the Mk II. But, you could still get a similar look using good composition, good focus and good exposure.

Awesome!

Just watching and studying the composition and editing techniques may take one several days and they will still find something new. Thank you for sharing this jewel.

I ran across this video by DoP Phillip Bloom shot with a 5Dmk II DSLR camera. Shot at night in the city of Prague Phillip makes everyday life in that wintry city look like something that should've been in an Audry Hepburn flick. The Mk II is hardcore in color, but shows that in the hands of someone with an eye can kick butt in B&W too!
