This can be easily done using Paypal and a video player with domain level privacy or password protection (such as Vimeo Plus). First get a Paypal business account (which is free) and create a Paypal payment button with the price you want. Then upload your video to Vimeo and use either password protection or domain level privacy (which let you embed your video to specific places on the web, in this case your website).

After you have this two create a section in your website (better known as a landing page) with the Paypal Buy Now button and a sample of the video (or anything else you want). Your customer will checkout with Paypal and after their payment they will be redirected to your video (you need to make this redirect in your Paypal account). You can also send them the secure URL of the video to their email and I recommend having a downloadable version of the video along with the purchase.

With this method you don't need any complicated and expensive services, you do it all yourself. Of course, test it out before selling anything.

Hi guys, long time lurker, first post, be gentle.

I'm looking for a service that will allow me to sell my videos directly through my website.

Basically, people can purchase a video, and then watch it directly on my website as many times as they like, on as many devices as they like, once they've purchased the video.

I'm at my wits end trying to figure out a way to do this, and any help would be greatly appreciated. I figured someone here might have experience with selling video streams from a website.

Not sure one way or another about these guys. Until they get a reputation built or someone reputable in the biz recommends them, I'll maintain a 'wait and see' stance. In the meantime, you can get results from outfits like;

Bigstar.tv

Indiepix.com

Snagfilms.com

just to name a few already established outfits where you can go to their websites and get info without having to sign up for anything.

Thank you for your comments EarlC. Most of the questions you ask are actually answered on our website. However on this occasion I am happy to answer them directly;

I have worked in the film industry for 14 years, mainly as line producer and then as producer.

We have no paid advertising on our site yet, so we are completly self funded as a low cost operation intended to assist the filmmaker and or the rights holder, to market their film to the international buyer.

We regularly visit film markets and festivals and make direct contact with buyers.

We don't host any material, trailers are uploaded to third party video websites like youtube. So in essence we are an introduction agency, with the unique free service of bidding(Rights Bidding Systems).

If you have any further questions, please visit our site.

Many thanks

What are your qualifications? Are you conducting any PAID advertising or marketing efforts for this program, even if entry is "free"? Care to share WHY your service or website, without having to GO there to find out, is a "go to" place for doing this, how you propose to be effective and who in the industry knows enough about you that they'd go there to check out or review independent productions and/or "feature film" productions and bid on them? How can you guarantee against copyright infringement for materials you host there?

I've had my radar on for any site such as this, where you can make money with your own web video content (how-tos, Special Interest Videos, educational) and there are a lot of these types of sites out there that don't look "right." If anyone knows of legitimate, true business sites where you can sell downloadable videos, I would love to know of them. Tomorrow we're checking out Digital Rights Director http://www.digitalrightsdirector.com/ as a possible resource but at a monthly fee of $99, it may be out of the league for some people just starting to sell their video content. What's intriguing us about this one is the protection it offers.

Yeah, I took a look at the site.... (long sigh) Okay, even if (and I do mean 'if') these guys are remotely legit their setup still smells to high heaven of phish! Those how to videos are so amateurish and have no narration (so you can catch the bad english or whatever) and you can barely see what their doing anyway.

Most important, if Google could barely figure out how to monetize YouTube what the (censored) makes anyone think anyone would buy your video when they can watch the blasted thing much as they want for free?

That and as so many other sites have found that it's tough to sell videos that you can watch for free unless some serious packaging is done (just ask History, NatGeo, Discovery, PBS, Sci-fy, ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, BBC, you getting the picture?) Your little I hate to say it, lame YouTube vid can go viral but nobody's going to pay for it.

I'm sorry, but I have to put these guys deep into the 'Don't Say You Weren't Warned' bin. If you want to sell your vids there are much better and far more reputable setups than that more than likely 'fly by day' outfit. Keep your info and your money to yourself.

No one will pay for something they can get for free, especially a YouTube video. YouTube is an excellent tool to market services, getting notice and having a portfolio accessible even on a cellphone (not with the best video quality, but you have it and for free)

There are certainly more practical, smarter and better ways to promote/sell valid video production and content IMHO. Like Bruce, I would have canned it first read, but it can provide some inspiration for further solid advice and information regarding all things about "selling video" on the web. Just wait until Composite and Grinner get ahold of this one ;-)

Good call C-O-L. Had you not commented I would have deleted the message but let's use this as a teaching moment.

I cannot peak to the authenticity of this site however the point you make is very valid. Anyone who signs up and the immediately posts a single message touting there wares is suspect to me, especially when that site asks for ANY personal information.

There's a series of good commercials from Microsoft on TV now that shows how gullible and vulnerable people can be. A very good rule of thumb is o never give out any personal info unless you are 100% certain of who you are giving it to.

As I said about this site, I cannot speak to the legality, authenticity, veracity, or anything else about it and I would be highly suspect about any site telling me they can sell my video on someone else's site, especially YouTube.

"what format should i use? quicktime and video codec motion jpeg a or b ?"

In the export movie settings box choose quicktime as the file type.

In the video settings choose photo-jpeg as the compressor.

You can change the resolution to whatever you want but just keep it at 1440x1080 with it's original pixel aspect ratio of 1.333.

The stock footage site will convert the file to whatever size it needs....only change the resolution if the stock footage site specifically asks for a particular resolution.

If you have to convert the footage to something like 1280x720, use a square pixel aspect ratio of 1.000.

Most stock footage sites list the formats that they'll accept.

The most common are H.264 and Photo Jpeg, and sometimes Mp4.

H.264 and Mp4 are typically deliverable files and not meant to be edited, but the stock footage companies like the small size for fast download.

The better format will be Photo Jpeg....better quality and better for editing.

You will only want to use DV-AVI for standard definition.

Best Regards,

H.264 (AVC) format is probably the best route for your situation. If you're trapped with a bunch of buyers that still don't support the format, WMV (a semi-web format) or DV-AVI (better if it's compressed inside a ZIP file) would be a better way to go.

Thank you for the caution.

Her mother will be with her to supervise, and they are both devout believers. I am sure they will be very careful with the equipment.

She has expressed a big interest in photography, and she wants to get a DSLR for her graduation.

Placing an ad on eBay isn't too bad.

I certainly wouldn't be giving a 13 year old $1,000 equipment to play with. They'll just drop it...poof. You won't get anything you can use anyway. I used students almost twice that age and they returned zilch. One never removed the lenscap...

I should probably say this: the reason I want HD is that I am in a different situation than most.

I am trying to make educational/training videos that will go out mainly on the web, but also on DVD and eventually Blu-Ray. Whether Blu-Ray ever takes off, or something else replaces it I don't know. I just think it would be worth my while to get HD footage at the start, so I do not have to re-do everything later.

To me it seems like this is one of those times where a little bit more up front will pay off later, in terms of not having to re-do things. That is the only reason I am even considering it.

Thank you for your help and advice.

Thank you all for your advice.

Really what will probably happen is that my housemate's daughter (who is an aware thirteen) will probably take it all over hither and yon this summer, filming. I will give specific assignments, and then she will 'practice' by trying to retrieve the footage I need for my documentaries. This should be fun for her, and then I do not have to go film.

But I really want all of the footage in HD. I checkedon EBay, and they have a GL2 with bids at $910.00. I have a few more accessories than he did, so if I could get $1,000.00 out of it, I would probably be pretty happy.

I have never placed an ad on EBay. Is it difficult?

Thank you,

Omtech, keep in mind it's probably a NTSC cam whereas you're probably in PAL country. I'd keep it as a backup.

If you are selling a Cannon GL2 camera - Like New, you'd get a lot from it. Like Earl said, you will not be able to match the price of the camcorder alone for its original sticker price. A shotgun microphone included will definitely add value. It won't be too risky to give it a shot with eBay, a place that is full of new and used consumer camcorders. And anyway, we're talking about a Cannon GL2, so you will probably get a good deal out of it.

Sad to say, the true value of your GL2 (I have one and know how GREAT a camera it is), what you originally paid for it, and what you will get from a company that purchases used equipment, or what you will be offered by folks who frequent ebay or Craigs List will prove miles apart. I came to that realization recently when attempting to get enough out of my two XL1 and one GL2 to purchase (I'd hoped) at least one Panasonic 150, maybe even a bit toward a second one. Nada.

I will wait until I can pay cash for the new HD production cameras and have decided to keep my Canons because they are worth MORE to me than they are to virtually anyone "out there" especially considering market value when compared to current technology.

So, mine will become backups, live feed tools, second gig cameras, perhaps even rentals or loaners to others who work for me from time-to-time. Pretty much ANY gig they will be used for will be as much, if not more, than I could get anyone to pay for them.

You will NOT get what that camera is really worth, trust me.
