Ah, ok thanks for that. I didn't know for certain that a C10 could run at C6 speed, for example. I might pick up the SD card anyway so I can use the camera as a photo camera if the need arises. Thank you!

Our Canon GL2 can only capture still images to the SD card. The class 10 card should work, though I have not tested it. I recently purchased a Class 10 card for my Sony camcorder and it works without issues. Usually these cards are backward compatible, they can operate slower than their rated speed but not faster.

Does anyone know if the GL2 will work with a class 10 card? Also will the memory card allow video capture or only stills?

My instinct says that I'm probably safer to use tape anyway, but if anyone has a different opinion then this is the place to share it!

I had a few problems with my old Panasonic camera using miniDV tape but generally it worked well.

If $550 won't break the bank, you might want to check the Datavideo DN-60, recently reviewed here in VM. It mounts on your camera and has a firewire port. It records to CF cards, with a 8GB card yielding about 30 minutes of video. The only quibble the reviewer seemed to find was the firewire port being close enough to the mount to cause issues with the cable. I'm considering one for my trusty XL2 when the tape drive dies.

I use a couple of older 3-chip units to record directly to hard drive. It really depends on the setup and connections available to you between your computer, DVD recorder or standalone black box editor. I'm probably not in a high enough pay grade to know all the connection options for every unit out there, but usually if your computer and camera both have firewire, and your computer is video friendly you'd be good to go.

I have an equally antique Casablanca dedicated black box editing system that still works and will take the firewire feed off my GL2, or the S-video feed off my Panasonic AG-3, or even my XL1 units, and record directly to hard drive. There are solutions provided you know your equipment and have the connectivity. Beyond that, I've considered acquiring either a direct-to-portable-hard-drive or direct to SDHC recorder unit, but as you say they are more expensive alternatives. A CHEAP price, however, when you consider being able to repurpose a once-equally expensive camcorder that generates a great signal but is losing it somewhat in the tape transport system, etc.

my canon GL1 has been sitting lonely on a shelf for a few years now. i never liked having to do video capture in order to get the video into my pc which is probably one of the reasons i gave up on video as a hobby - that is until digital camcorders that could record to sdhc came on the scene. since then, i've been rekindling my hobby since it is so each to get video into the pc now. but, i still wish i could find some use for my GL1 without breaking the bank. does anyone know if any of these things are possible and how to do it

1 - connect the GL1 directly to a pc to record directly to disk rather than to a miniDV tape. i would be willing to use the camera in a fixed studio setting if this is possible

2 - is there a cheap miniDV player that can convert a tape to sdhc or a harddrive

3 - i know there is a cool device that can connect to the DV port and record directly to a built in hard drive, but this is rather expensive - way more than what i would be willing to spend. http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=QSDV-HDV-6&Category_Code=DV&Product_Count=0

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Some points to keep in mind.

A lot of issues with memory cards in these types of devices (cameras, audio recorders, etc.) have been linked to people not formatting them in the device to be used BEFORE use. Not all FAT32 is treated the same by these devices and this allows the device to set up it's file structure in the memory card before actual use. In some cases this formatting can catch compatibility problems before you try to put critical data on them.

My process has been the following. The only 2 card issues I have ever had was losing the write protect tab (I use SDHC and write protect them when I take them out of the camera. Losing this tab puts it in write protect so you still have access to your data);

New card goes in and is formatted immediately.

Cards that I copy the data off of go through the same process before reuse once I confirm a valid copy was taken.

I don't think I'm able to get micro center products anywhere near me (Belgium). I did find out that Transcend sells about the same quality, but at half the price (Class 10 32gb for 60 euros). I'm worried about the compatibility though. They should work, but there have been problems in the past and I can't seem to find if they are solved or not.

I would definitely go class 10. Some generics I have had horrid problems with, but I have had great success with the Microcenter brand, and I believe their 32GB class 10 cards are only $50 at the moment. Do NOT go class 1, it will be way too slow.

Hi,

I'm about to buy a GY HM100, so I'm also looking which SDHC cards to use. I know class 6 is the mininum, but will class 10 also work? Also, I found a website where they sell class 1 HD cards. Would these work?

Second; what bitrate should the cards have? I know the camera can go up to 35Mbit/s, which I assume, is when it records in 1080p. So the cards should also have a minimum of 35Mb/s?

If there are users here who can share there experience with this camera and these SDHC-cards, that would be great.

Thanks,

It would most likely be a firmware issue, but you really should visit the site and specs for your specific model and inquire of the maker what the bottom line would be - beats the heck out of assuming, or taking the word of someone like me who simply does not know. Unless I did have a camera (doesn't help that you don't specify which one - somebody might be curious enough to do the lookup for you) that I researched and confirmed it could be firmware upgraded to use 32, I see no serious benefit, for the price, of paying so much more for 32, with in most cases 16 will do the job quite well - capacity-wise.

Very pretty. I especially liked the shot at 1:12 - 1:39, the sun traveled across the sky with the music well. Some of the beats of the music didn't match the cuts, and the rabbit felt out of place, but the overall video showed a beautiful morning for a nice Summer Solstice gathering. The imagery of the 150 was beautiful. I didn’t see any grain or video noise, maybe it’s just the program I was viewing it through. This made me want to go out at 4:AM and shoot again like I did in the old days when shooting was number one and a full night’s sleep took a backseat. Did you shoot all day?

June 21st 2009. Allison and I stayed up all night and headed to the top of Tumwater hill about 4:30 am to watch the sun rise. Still in the honeymoon phase with my new
Panasonic HMC-150, still getting to know it, to understand it's strengths, weaknesses and limitations. A beautiful sunrise. Saw a rabbit while up there, he made it in to the video, and helped me
realize what music I wanted to cut this to. "Time" is one of my all time favorite songs. I know I'm not supposed to use it, but I could think of nothing else that seemed more fitting to me than this song. I'm not making any money on this video, and I gave credit, so we'll see what happens...

At full resolution some of the darker areas seem a bit noisy. I've been quite impressed with the camera overall so far - caveat; the chassis seems cheap to me. It's all plastic. After coming from the DVX-100b and it's solid magnesium alloy chassis, the HMC seriously seems like it could never be as durable as the DVX. Not that I plan on dropping it - and I realize that plastics are a phenomenal material. In all actuality, it's probably fine, it just feels cheap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIuY-rePSw8&feature=channel_page

Hello.

I am hoping to upgrade to the Panasonic AGCHM-150PJ in AVCHD. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B001DKELYC/ref=ord_cart_shr?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance. I have the Cineform NeoScene codec, so AVCHD should not be a problem.

However, I am also looking for a good backup/pocket/B-roll AVCHD camera to go with it, hopefully also feeding to SDHC/Flash cards.

My budget is anywhere from $600.00 to $1400.00, depending. I am open to all manufacturers, but would prefer to go with SDHC/Flash, rather than a hard drive model. For a B-roll camera, visual quality is the main concern, but audio quality is also a consideration.

Thank you for any advice and help you can give.

Hello, I had read that Videomaker had posted HMC-150 footage for downloading somewhere back in November. I can't seem to find it. I'm wondering if anyone has any generic HMC-150 footage in it's native AVCCAM state. I'm on the verge of buying one. I'd really like to try a test run editing some footage to see if my computer will be able to handle it. Unfortunately I don't live in an area where these cameras are readily available to rent, so I'll give this a shot and see if it works. I just don't want to sink the money into the camera to then find out I need to upgrade my computer.

The specs on my computer - if it helps anyone who has edited this footage give me feedback; 2.8 dual core iMac with 4 gigs of ram.

Any info or help is greatly appreciated.

Anyone gone hands on yet with this SD & SDHC recordable Panasonic? If so, care to share the good, the bad and the ugly? I've read some of the trades articles, and the four-page insert by Panasonic, now I hope for some real life input, or a reality check regarding the unit from an event and commercial production view. As averse as I have been toward AVCHD, this camera appears to have enough stuff going for it that I could be swayed.

Looks like a decent camera to me. The only thing I don't like is that it records AVCHD. It's a codec that uses a lot of compression...more compressed than HDV in fact. Maybe that matters to you, maybe it doesnt. All depends on what you're doing.

I thought I already posted this question here.. I don't know what happened to it. Anyway. Has anyone looked into this camcorder. I'm not really seeing any reviews and am very curious about it. I understand the argument for mini-dv, but I love using flash memory. Here's the link if you want to take a look:

I just did a little more research and realized that the HMC70 does not have a focus ring. Big problem.

Has anyone used the Panasonic AG-HMC70? It's a 1080i AVCHD shoulder mounted cam that records to SDHC cards. It also has XLR inputs and BNC out. For the price ($2100) it looks like it might be a good entry HD camcorder. Just wondering if anyone had used it.
