Meet the XQD Memory Card. Works with Nikon D4!

A few days ago The Compact Flash Association announced a new format
to replace CF cards for professional photographers, and HDLSR
filmmakers. The new format is called XQD, and has a physical size
that falls between CF and SD cards (it is thicker than SD cards, but
smaller than CF cards). The interface used is PCI Express, with real
world write speeds around 125MB/s, eventually being able to exceed 2
terabytes of capacity!

I have a consumer grade Panasonic PV-GS90P camcorder. One of the setup options on it is aspect ratio 16:9 or 4:3. I've always had it set on 4:3 and always had standard definition televisions in the house. We now have two high definition TVs. Is there any pluses or minuses to changing the aspect ratio to 16:9? Am I taking the same number of pixels and spreading them out? This is a newbie question but that's how guys like me learn. From the pros.

Hello,

I am completely new to video editing, and I started by buying a panasonic sd 90 which was what my current budget would allow me (+ batteries sd cards tripods etc).

Before purchasing I read some reviews (all where good to excellent) and I researched some sample videos online, all of which looked pretty good for a cam of this budget.

Now that I use it though, have noticed that the camera produces allot of noise, even in bright light- which is not very visible after the video is compressed, so I did not notice on the samples I watched online. Videos taken after dark, even in relatively well lit environments (such as bussy bar streets) are pretty useless. Is this normal for such a camera? I am bluffed because I thought it would produce at least decent videos.

Thanks allotÃ?Â

I am looking to purchase a camcorder, and I am wondering what others think about the HD vs SD dilemma, especially with regards to wildlife subjects. I am an aspiring wildlife filmmaker and so far have shot all of my footage in HD (on a Sony FX1 and Canon XHA1). I am happy with the quality of the footage I shot on these cameras, but for wildlife filming longer lenses would obviously be a benefit. Here is a link to my showreel if you would like to see some of my footage: EXAMPLE FOOTAGE. Since I just graduated from college and those cameras belonged to my school, I now find myself without a camera.

I have done a lot of reading on choosing cameras in books and on forums, and I believe I have a pretty good handle on the costs and benefits of both HD and SD for wildlife, and in general. I know that interchangeable lenses are often considered a necessity for wildlife work, and as I have a knowledge of lenses and multi-lens setups I feel that I am ready to handle this type of setup. I know it adds a lot of cost, weight, etc, but again, for wildlife it seems like more of a necessity than perhaps in other film genres. Because of this I have been considering the Canon XL2.

On the other hand, I know that the wildlife film industry, and all video in general, is quickly transitioning to HD. I love the quality and resolution I was able to obtain using the FX1 and XHA1, but I just didn't get the magnification I need to film many subjects. While I could get close enough to woodchucks (within 10ft) to get decent close-ups, I can't get this close to a fox, deer, bear, etc. I am working on a budget, and so I can't afford something like the Canon XLH1 at this point, and so any HD camera I purchase would not offer interchangeable lenses.

At this point my main goal is NOT to produce lots of footage to sell to anyone, but to improve my reel with effective sequences of behavior so that I can show that I am able to shoot for sequence-editing and will subsequently be noticed by producers.

Is a camera like the XL2 good enough for this purpose? Or do I absolutely NEED HD footage in order to compete in today's HD world, even in terms of my showreel? Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Orpheus on "Canon 7D or videocamera? HD or SD? AVCHD Editing problems? Worth it? Opinions?!"

**If you have an opinion on anything I discuss, please post below because every "vote" counts in my decisions going forward.**

My Goal: To shoot small / short film projects to upload to the internet and burn to DVD. (I would also like to do some still photography on the side, whether it is with the camera I buy or a separate still camera---this is factoring into my decision somewhat, but I want to focus on video.)

Note: I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (the production package with after effects, etc..)

Do I buy a 7D? Price vs performance seems tempting, but many people have problems editing AVCHD and I don't have CS5 with the Mercury Playback Engine. (I am buying a new computer soon, which I will make sure has the capability to edit HD, but is that worth it since I plan to output to DVD and the internet?) All of the codecs and conversions don't seem worth the effort depending on where my footage is going to end up...should I stick with Standard Definition? (The videocamera I have now is standard definition: Panasonic DVX100)

I would like creative options, and being able to change lenses seems like more creative options. Also, my projects will mostly be small indie-film-like projects, so I won't really be doing live events.

The downside to 7D is that there are many accessories that will add up if I want to use it primarily for video? Would I be better off putting that money into a videocamera from the start?

I can always buy a separate still camera that takes great pictures to have alongside a videocamera.

OR

That brings us to my second option: Do I buy an HD videocamera? After I get my new computer, I would love to have great looking footage, but since I am only going to be outputting it to DVD in the end, does HD matter? How much better does it look than SD on DVD? People want video on the internet to load really fast these days, and if I shoot HD and upload HD, sure they have the HD option, but I would guess the majority just watch it Low Resolution anyways.

So, that brings us to the big finale: What to do? The Panasonic AG-AF100 is 5,000 dollars and out of my budget. The 7D is within reach, but has lots of drawbacks. An HD prosumer videocamera might take a bit more time to save up for, BUT is it the right way to go if I want to focus on video? Then again, I can take still photographs anytime to practice photography, with some video projects on the side when friends are available to help.

**Please feel free to join in with your opinion on what you would do in this situation, and explain WHY? What things would make you lean towards one option over the other?

Thank you for your opinion!

navyspecwarfare on "AVCHD .mts to Standard DVD in Sony Vegas and DVD Architect?!"

When I drop my AVCHD .mts clips from my Canon HF10
camera into Sony Vegas Platinum
(consumer version), and then use the make DVD wizard, it renders and
then sends my media files to DVD architect 4.5 and then burns my DVD to
look spectacular. This is fantastic because my project I'm working on
is going on
4.7GB DVDs for commercial DVD players or computers. I simply shot in HD
because I wanted the option in the future to burn to Blu-ray, but won't
be doing that as of yet.

I don't want to use Sony Vegas Platinum though....I want more
advanced options and more options later for BluRay, etc etc etc and thus
need to edit, render, send the edited/rendered files to DVD architect
pro 5.0, and then burn to DVD using Sony Vegas Pro, not Platinum.

Sony Vegas Pro does not have this streamlined "make DVD" option like
the nice consumer version does.
After editing in Vegas Pro, I have to manually render my project using
the plethora
of options available, which honestly, I don't know much about. I've
tried rendering using NTSC widescreen for DVD architect (MPEG-2), I've
tried HDV with high settings, etc etc etc and when I drop these rendered
files into DVD Architect, they don't turn out well quality-wise like
they did in Sony Vegas Platinum using the automatic make DVD settings.Â
I
simply want to render these edited .mts files to a format that DVD
architect will like and then burn in high quality so my DVDs look good
on any DVD player with a standard monitor or HD monitor. Vegas
Platinum
does a great job, but it's unknown to me what it is doing behind the
scenes to render my files before it sends them off to DVD architect.
Obviously it works great given my test with Vegas Platinum and native
.mts files, but I have no idea what Vegas Platinum is doing to convert
or render these editing .mts files to make them still high quality and
smooth for DVD architect. I just need to know how to replicate this
process manually in Vegas Pro and I'm set.

So to recap, and in a nutshell, I need to know what render settings
to choose in Vegas Pro after editing my .mts files natively so I can
then send them over to DVD architect pro 5.0 and burn my project to a
DVD without loss of visual quality.

Any help greatly appreciated.

So here goes...

I shot an immense amount of footage in AVCHD from a Canon prosumer Vixia. Have 1920 x 1080 .MTS files that now need editing.

Here is the deal though...

I originally shot it in HD, need to first release it in SD due to media prices, but then want the option to release it in HD later when blu-ray discs go down in price. Need to know how to set-up the templates properly in Sony Vegas Pro as well as monitors for editing. A bit confusing for me since I shot in HD, need to edit it but then output to SD, but then need to output in future to HD.

My questions are as follows:

1.

How should I set-up the Sony Vegas Pro template for my project and for color correction? Should I set it up as 1920 x 1080i HD even though it is going out first to standard definition 720 x 480? Or should I set up the template as 720 x 480 standard NTSC? How will the final decision affect future desires to output to Blu-ray as high definition?

2.

How should I set up the monitors for color correction? Should I set up a CRT via firewire so that I can see what it looks like on a standard definition CRT? Or should I output to a 1920 x 1080 LCD computer monitor? Or both? Will color correcting in one format (HD) make it look funky in another format (SD) and vice-versa?

What to recommend since I originally shot it in HD, need to first release it in SD, but then want the option to release it in HD later?

Many thanks for the help; in the gurus I trust!

I want to give a more film like look to a music show I'm producing by shooting in 24pn on HVX200 cams. It will be broadcast in SD for some stations and HD for others. We're trying to figure out the best method for exporting the show from Premiere CS4 for broadcast so it will still retain the film look of 24pn.

Just wondering if anyone else has shared this same work-flow and has some quick and easy steps to help us get the best, most trouble-free results. Thanks.

First of all, sorry if my english ins´t great...but i beleive is not so bad either and i will try to explain my problem as best as i can.

Ok, this is something i feel is becoming really important for websites all over the world investing on video news reporting and i (strangelly enough) can´t find any good info about it. So, if someone could help me out i would really be thankfull.

About a year and a half i started a project of video news reporting for a newspaper website. My professional background was in video for TV (i worked as producer and director on a tv news department) and i started only then learning about this wonderfull world of web video.

Usually we make video reports and then bring them in house (on SD Cards) for editing and publishing but lately i´ve been thinking on having the camera operators send me a few clips directly from the reporting site to our offices for almost imeddiate publishing. But what´s the best way to do it?

I want to be able to receive at least decent quality clips so i could do further editing in house so i can´t ask them to send me 320X240 clips. And good quality files are heavy to send over internet and take a large amount of time.

So, does anyone had the same kind of problems? What solutions are available? What´s the best software for conversion (quality/speed)? All ideas on this subjects are important for me and i believe for many other fellow videomakers in your foruns. Thanks for your help.

Hello,

I've never done any video before and I want to document a trip I'm going on and also make it like a documentary where I interview people at the event I'm attending. My hope is that I can get the video played the following year at their amateur film festival. My questions are do I have to shoot in HD to be current? Do I need a prosumer camera to acheive my goal or can I use something like a consumer camcorder? This may be a one time project so I'm not terribly worried about getting a camera that will bring me to professional level in the future. Having said that obviously I won't be investing a lot of money in computer/editing hardware. I think my main concerns with this project will be low light situations, sound quality, and my own level of inexperience. Any suggestions for camera/other equipment that would suit this type of project with a complete newbie?

Thanks,

~LAM

I'm about to start a small video business. I know times are hard but if I can make it happen now... I have been offered some corporate work shooting sporting days at a kart race track. As I am new to this as a business could I ask for suggestions regarding the following? I realise quality is an issue, but I am concerned over the massive size of HD files compared to SD. I will be giving my work out on DVD therefore is HD neccessary? I am a big fan of HD, but will the added investment of HD cameras (I'm thinking three Canon HV30's) and probably a serious upgrade to my current PC be worth it? I know HV30's can shoot standard def so they could still be an option with room to go HD later. Another question is regarding mixing SD and HD. If I shoot trackside with HD and say use a helmet cam on one of the drivers in SD, will the difference be acceptable on the final edit? Likewise if due to cost I used an SD/HD mix trackside, how would that look? Finally, I'm trying to cost out the business for my business plan and although I will be at the track for say 2-3 hours, I don't know how long the whole job will take with editing, rendering etc so I'm struggling to come up with an hourly rate! The actual race that I will be shooting will only last about 13 minutes and I will probably have four cameras covering this. Sorry if these are dumb questions!

I am making instructional video with Sony Vegas Pro 9.0a. This particular video is supposed to be a book review of our intro study. I normally render using the Sony AVC codec (H.264) and the Internet Widescreen 16:9 30p preset, and then I upload to Vimeo and YouTube. However, with this particular video I also need to upload it to Amazon.com in 4:3, 99MB or less, and specifically .flv. (as Amazon.com won't take H.264 for a review). But before I can render it to FLV there is a rendering issue.

Because of the current Vegas 9.0a Media Generators bug, I am using Photoshop to make titles. I also made a translucent yellow box for a 'highlighter' of sorts, which I resize over the area of text that I need highlighted with Track Motion. Because each 'highliter' needs different placement, this ends up giving me a lot of separate tracks (36).

Everything came out nice (and properly aligned) with Sony AVC, 16:9 Widescreen HD 30p preset. However, when I rendered as Sony AVC, Internet SD 4:3 preset, the 'hiliter' and some of the secondary titling came out misaligned. This is most apparent starting at about 6:26 (6 minutes and 26 seconds).

But why would everything render just fine in 16:9 Widescreen, and then be misaligned in 4:3 SD? I would think that if there was to be a shift in the Track Motion, that it would end up being applied uniformly.

Why did the alignment get thrown off?

Thanks.

Hi all,

My friends and I are planning to take part in 48 hours film festival. All of us are very new to film making and have little or no film making experience.

We are trying to rent out camcorders for this. Our options are

1)Sony VX2100

2)Sony DSR-VX2100

3)Sony HVR-Z1U(HD)

4)Sony DSR-PD150(SD)

Â

HD cameras are more expensive to rent than the SD ones. What I want to know is how much difference would having an HD camera make for such a

festival. We are planning to get additional light equipment and microphones. Any feedback is welcome.

Thanks.

I'm a video production student as well as a news intern. The news station has told me to buy a camera and start putting together my own packages. I have dreams of shooting a documentary, but I could also possibly get hired by the station. I'm currently training with their shooters as well as in writing/producing. I ended up buying a new dvx100b for $2000 total (we use the original dvx100 at school and I'm familiar with it) but immediately had buyer's remorse. I've heard so many professional opinions I don't know which way to turn. Here's the gist:

1. ME: I'm familiar with the DVX line, like it and it has a good rep (plus I won't deny it looks professional) I would like manual control and XLR inputs but would put up with an audio input used in consumer lines (guessing 1/8 inch)

2. Teacher 1 opinion: "DVX100b is a great camera and HD is changing fast. wait and save for HD."

3. Teacher 2 opinion: "buy a cheaper HD camera and rent a fancy cam when you get hired for gigs - it's all about framing anyway."

4. Stringers use even cheaper canon HD's and their video makes the news

5. opinion 5:"Everyone wants HD, no one will pay for your lame-o SD...SD is over."

6. Opinion 6: "DV tapes take too long to ingest."

7. Teacher 1: "Data/video saved to a Hard Drive and not backed up can be lost."

8. My opinion: one caveat to the dvx is that I would also like to shoot climbing videos on the side and a smaller camera is better for that - though this is a minor side project. Ideally I would like to shoot a short doc for KQED - that sort of thing, plus packages for news.

So, should i return the DVX100B, save my money, get a consumer cam?

Anyone got a better recommendation than the VIXIA?

I'm planning on getting a tripod, mic, etc. no matter what camera I choose. I would really appreciate some guidance, and yes - I'm looking to make money with this camera.

Hi:

I'll be shooting event using two cameras: Sony FX1000 (HD) as main one and Sony VX2100 (SD) as a backup (not to miss anything on stage). This will be my first experience with HD cameras. Then I will conbine both footages in Sony Vegas Platinum 9.0. Eventually I want to produce both versions: SD DVD and HD DVD. Questions:

1) I know that editor can render both footages into SD mode and produce SD mpeg2 file. Any problems, recomendations?

2) I do not know if editor can convert parts of SD footage (very small persentage of the total) into HD output? If yes, will it deteriorate quality of original SD footage?

Thamnk you for help.

Anyone gone hands on yet with this SD & SDHC recordable Panasonic? If so, care to share the good, the bad and the ugly? I've read some of the trades articles, and the four-page insert by Panasonic, now I hope for some real life input, or a reality check regarding the unit from an event and commercial production view. As averse as I have been toward AVCHD, this camera appears to have enough stuff going for it that I could be swayed.

Hey everybody, just discovered the website. I'm Eric

I consider myself as a digital artist and do a lot ot media (graphic, photo and video). I have more than 5 years and I have directed 5 music videos...I just got in Chicago to actually study my passion and earn a degree since there is no school for that in my country (Benin, Western Africa). I hold a degree in communication and advertising but that was just too much theory...

Here is the fact:

I use to work as digital media technician in the creative department of an advertising/production agency back home. I did a lot of designs for print, motion graphics and editing and photography. I was really proud back then since i had access to equipment and studio.

Here I am now, and is struggling to pay my studies. I have decided to buy either a semipro camera and a camcorder and other accessories. but I can only buy one thing at a time.

I know there is a lot of people here who do both Photo & Video. I would like to know which market will help me make enough money to buy the rest of the equipment.

I also would like to know if I SD is still around in the US video production because in Africa or rather in my country it is really rare and considered a luxury. I already own what i think is a good computer to do some work and is setting up my website.

All support will be much appreciated (www.sericdossou.com)

Thanks

I've recently bought a Sanyo HD700 video camera and have been trying to burn 720p video from the SD card to a DVD but the process seems to take so long I think I'm too old at 50 to burn more than one movie! ... is there a quicker way or am I doing something wrong? The footage direct from the camera to a TV is excellent quality but almost unwatchable because each clip starts and ends with a still shot and no audio. This can be removed by joining the clips in the Adobe Premier freebie software that came with the camera.  I then need to burn the file to a DVD, but the encoding process for about 20 minutes of video takes 6-8 hours??

I have two lap-tops, both with DVD drives - one with an AMD Turion processor and the other with a Pentium Dual Core and 2 Mb RAM ... but both take forever.

Is there a quick, resonably simple way I can make a DVD from the SD card without the annoying freeze frames between every shot and withiout having to run the lap top overnight?

Thanks for any help from the experts!
