Hi All,

I don't personally know of anyone who has gotten sued for using "pirated" music in wedding videos, but here is a different problem. If you try to post a video with pirated music on YouTube, they sometimes catch it and refuse to post the video. This happened to me and I had to go back and change the music to be "YouTube acceptable."

Two things I do know

1) Using copyrighted music in any way (including wedding videos) without proper licensing is just about always running afoul of the DMCA and could get you into hot water legally.

2) I have not personally known anyone (videograher/editor/producer) to get sued because they used any musical piece in any wedding video.

I am not a lawyer and do not play one on TV - If you are truly concerned or want a legal opinion, please consult with an intellectual property attorney. All comments are my opinion only - Your mileage may vary.

I reckon a wedding video would come under 'Acceptable use', and it's not like you'd be profiting from it. I think if someone turned you in they would probably get ignored. Not 100% what the law is though. If it became a commercial success they may be someone tapping you on the shoulder for their share. :-)

I suppose it's just like inviting people round for a party and playing some cd's all night. In both situations your broadcasting someone elses music to a large group of people.

"I do know that using someone else's music in a video is pirating but by all the hub bub about using it on, say, a couples wedding video. Is it because it may be seen by another couple that may turn us in or what."

The conflict is that you profit partly because of someone else's work. Music will make or break a video. So I can see why it's a big deal.

OK, I have a question that may be irrelevant. I do know that using someone else's music in a video is pirating but by all the hub bub about using it on, say, a couples wedding video. Is it because it may be seen by another couple that may turn us in or what. I do not shoot wedding videos or anything like that but this question has been bugging me. I only use work that has been authored by an accredited agency but, I am just curious.

Hiya, I've recently completed training in film score techniques and looking for some experience and to put a portfolio together. I've a lot of experience with composing and music production and can be very versatile with style. I've put a little site together here http://neonmonkeystudios.com where you can hear some examples of my stuff. Please contact me at russwook@hotmail.com or through the site if your interested.

Also I've released an instrumental album under the name Bang Ce Soir which you can use for free for any project you have, the music varies from being quite intense to very chilled and might give a good insight into some other flavours I can cover too, just download them here at http://snd.sc/mzU69n but please give me a credit on the film and let me have access to a copy when it's finished.

Sarge -

If you're fairly well fluent with playing a real instrument, you might want to look at this piece of software to add a full orchestra to your compositions: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/QLSOGoldC

It's called East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra. There is also a version for vocal's (yes, you can type in the words and have a choir sing what you entered! - http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/QLChoirs).

Here's a better example: http://www.eastwestsamples.com/details.php?cd_index=963

I had played the violin for a few years and I can write basic compositions of what I want. When I'm figuring out a melody I'm thinking how the music can become part of the camera angles and the movement of my movie. I imagine a full orchestra with many instrument, but I only have a violin so I start playing the whole melody for a violin solo and then I use Finale to write a clear melody. I am lucky because a friend of mine is my composer and he help me polish my melody, fix the many mistakes I make and put the rest of the orchestra I imagine. I like to work with him because we both know music and we can share our ideas more clearly.

Hey all! Just curious how many filmmakers here are composers as well. (And I don't mean people who put loops together in GarageBand!) I mean those who know music theory, and compose, write, and/or perform. I thoght a thread on this topic would be interesting as indie filmmakers are always seeking cheap royalty-free music. Here are a few samples of my most recent scores. Everyone feel free to post their work!
