I would agree with EarlC. I love my GL2 and prefer the ease of use as well and the portability. The downside for me is it is not 16:9 and that would make it perfect. With the cost of HD TV's being so low, my clients prefer to be shot with what fits their screens.

The technology, circuitry, engineering and design of the GL2 actually makes it superior to the XL1 or XL1s with the ONLY serious exception being the ability to use interchangeable lenses with the XL series. Had I known then what I know now I would have saved myself megabucks and purchased THREE GL2 units instead of one GL2 and two XL1 units because I never really NEEDED to change lenses and I never saw my way clear to purchase the very expensive alternative lens choices to do so. My GL2 is my main unit of this setup, and the XL1 units are second cam and backup. I do have to say Canon lenses are vastly superior to much of the other comparably priced SD units out there, and would even hold up well (lens quality wise) to many of the high definition choices available in a similar price range. Realizing, of course, that I'm talking about apples and oranges there.

I'm offering advice on school-based broadcasting to some local schools, some elementary and some high school. For the past seven years I've had good success broadcasting over my high school's cable network using an old Panasonic MX-20 mixer and an even older Realistic sound mixer.

As an upgrade, I was sold on the Tricaster system from Newtek, but it's too pricey for the elementary school that I'm talking to. Does anyone have advice for a good basic mixer that wouldn't break the bank, but a person could buy new? If not, what's your best advice for used? I know you get what you pay for, and $5000 for a basic Tricaster is cheap for what you get (choice of output format/recording capability/chroma-key/audio mixer/all-in-one solution) but they have a budget of around $3000 for the mixer.

There aren't a lot of MX-20's around now, but WJ-MX50A' seem to be plentiful used, and can be had for under $1000. I've also been looking at Edirol systems as a 'new' option...

Any advice would be appreciated.

Fellow Filmmakers,

No Budget Film School will be happening again in LA on May 30 & 31,
2009. I missed it last time and was really bummed, so I wanted to
announce it here.

It's a two-day weekend seminar that teaches the craft of making a solid
feature film with virtually no budget. I've taken a shorter version of
the course and it was awesome. Plus, during the weekend version, there
are some really accomplished filmmakers who have made successful no
budget films.

There are some serious discounts too, but even the regular price is way low. Here's the link: No Budget Film School

If you market, you will make it. If you develop your talents and know your equipment, you can successfully market yourself both as a gunner, and as an independent producer, provided you also have the necessary hardware to edit and deliver.

So far as education goes, you need to have an understanding of business operations, as well as production, and the knowledge of audio/visual acquisition. There are a LOT of gunners "out there" who do nothing but hire themselves and their cameras, though usually these individuals have invested in top end camera equipment and perhaps even a Steadicam system.

Whatever element you decide to specialize in, or if you elect to pursue a business career as an independent video services provider, offering everything for event video production from acquisition to editing, to production, packaging and delivery, the business can certainly be profitable.

 So Im still in high school my senior year and Im interested in becoming a freelance videographer. Bu the question im asking is this a good video field to go into. I have a passion for shooting i love being behind the camera and im the only advanced video student in my whole school. I have heard lots of thing about this field like its not profitable and that its not a stable job. But I figured I would ask the pros. Im thinking about going to a community college and get my associates video degree and maybe to go to a four year university after that and get my bachelors. But is this a field I should be perusing or are there to many people doing this same job that I love doing.

Along the lines of internships, it really helps to show up one day and work for free so they can see you working. it also shows your tenacity that you want the job so bad you're willing to work for free at least one day. Better for you than a job interview.

I've done it a couple times, the only way you won't get the job is if you actually can't do the work.

You should definitely call and ask them/tell them beforehand. This will also help your status.

Thanks, Good advice!, But, I'm actually out of college. This is more of a "hindsight is 20/20" situation. I've got my foot in the door for a big corporation, don't like it. Like I said, I've done video for them. They require all branches to post videos so we get to know each other better... I'm sure you get the point. I created our video, which took hours of fixing and mixing different file types, audio levels, cropping, etc. I even fixed another branch's video. They tried mixing wrong codecs, sizes, file types, sampling rates... a nightmare when it came to editing everything together. And this was after two weeks of no success from the department who is supposed to handle these things! AND, I did it all from work, no luxury of a real video editor, just a couple hours tinkering with files until I got it right. But, I actually enjoyed doing that. So I have recognition from work for doing this, but I see your point- this is not really the right kind of recognition. I am hoping my filming of the wedding goes well and I learn from that. You've got me thinking though, what kind of organization around here could I film for?

 "It is a lot of fun, and I realize now that I would really like to make this a career, but... is this possible?"

Of course it's possible. If it weren't, who would be making all the TV shows and movies. But you don't have to work in broadcast or hollywood to find work. You can do corporate videos, wedding/event videos/ industrial videos. There's a whole bunch of stuff.Â

As far as where to go...you sound like you like shooting and editing. I can't tell you which school to go to. That's up to you to do the research. There's so many good schools out there, and it's more about what you make of it than it being a "good school"

Unfortunately, you sound like you're not the age of a typical college student. But fortunately, people can might take you more seriously and view you as a professional. I suggest doing free work for non profits in your area. I know, I know...we all need to make money. But I can tell you that handing over school projects to an employer isn't as great as going out and finding your own work and handing them that.

Also, working for different non profits, or any organization, expands your experience. For example, you can possibly make a video for the science program of a university. You can do one for their medical program. You can do stuff for the animal rescue league. You can make corporate videos for non profit orgs. After you do a bunch of videos, you can create a demo reel and sample work that looks like something that could be on The Discovery Channel, TLC, and you have corporate video under your belt. It's about getting the experience so that people know what you're doing. Anyone can dick their way though school. At my school you can suck and still get an A just cause you did the project. Going out and getting real experience and working with real people in real life situations will lead to the legit job, and that's when you start getting paid.

Hi. I am sort of a newbie when it comes to film making. I've always had a passion for it, but never a means to accomplish anything. Now that I finally have some money, I actually own a good digital camcorder. I love filming with every excuse I get. I have done a short film for work and will film a wedding next month! I spend hours on Sony Vegas Pro whenever I have an editing task, experimenting and trying to create the best result. It is a lot of fun, and I realize now that I would really like to make this a career, but... is this possible?

My current job feels like a dead end. Even if I were to get promoted, I do not enjoy corporate world, standard business casual attire, and 15 minute coffee breaks. They will pay for school, but it has to be related to work... not going to cut it for me. So I am willing to attend, and pay, for school, courses, seminars, whatever I need to break into a career I love. But that still leaves me wondering where I should go and what exactly I should do. So please, if you have a suggestion for me, please let me know! Perhaps you've been there yourself. I've got my game face on and am ready to take action. I just need a little direction!

Thanks,

If I had the money I would love to study VFX in Vancouver, in either VFS or VanArts.

I found another interesting option http://www.lostboys-learning.com/ here you study inside
a VFX house and this way you can see how they make real projects.

 Regarding combining After Effects with a 3d package. At the moment Adobe has an alliance with Maxon the makers of Cinema 4D. As a result both companies have built features into their respective software to make them work better together. You can basically export 3d cameras and positional information from C4D into AfterEffects and use it in the AE composition. In television VFX I believe the two main 3D programs are C4D and Lightwave.

>>If you learn Blender or other 3d software, and make a short movie (5 min or less) with a character and storyline, you can get a job at pixar.<<

Just make sure it is a phenomenal demo. PIXAR like ILM and other large companies has gotten to a point that they tend to hire experienced pros away from their competitors instead of hiring beginners.

there is a version of Maya called Maya PLE (Personal Learning Edition). This is not for commercial use, but it can teach you maya. I use free trials and freeware to learn techniques, then put on my website that I know the software. I then make sure employers know I don't actually have a copy of the programs and i've only gotten jobs where the company had the softwrae already.

Good luck. If you learn Blender or other 3d software, and make a short movie (5 min or less) with a character and storyline, you can get a job at pixar. i saw an add for them at filmstaff.com and that's all you needed to have. I found I learn more on the job, and going to a big school doesn't neccesarily mean that you get a job afterwards. for the pixar contact info, ask for it.

I already know After Effects fairly well, and I have been looking into blender. I want to start learning Maya but its a little out of my price range at the moment. I have done my "homework" I know what programs are out there and what people as well as business have so say about them. I am just looking for a school that is going to fiit my needs. and A Community College is not a bad option. But I am looking for something a little more geared towards VFX in Film and Video.

The best college I ever found was my local community college. Aims Community College in Greeley, Colorado is cheap and I LOVED my two classes in Newtek Lightwave 3D and Adobe After Effects/Photoshop.

There are also some classes in Autodesk Maya and Combustion, classes in Adobe Photoshop and Flash, not to mention advanced classes for Photoshop, Flash, Maya and Lightwave. I paid for all my classes myself with a little money i made working in construction and fast food.Â

before you start college, you should take a look at some websites and mess around with free trials of some software.

mediacollege.com, the Adobe TV website, creativecow.com are some REALLY GOOD ones. Also there are really good tutorials I found once that show what Lightwave can do.

The software I've heard of (and used in some cases) is

Autodesk: 3Ds Max, Maya, Combustion;

Newtek: Lightwave 3D;Â

Adobe: After Effects, Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator;

Maxxon: Cinema 4D;

and some internet freeware: Blender 3D, Anim8or, Art of Illusion, 3D Canvas, Wings 3D, POV-Ray.

I found that your college experience and study is DEFINITELY better off if you study a little beforehand.Â

You should check if the Vancouver Film School has programs where you can take classes at the Art Institute of Vancouver?  Sometimes schools near each other do that which seems like the best of both worlds for you?

I just looked into the Art Institutes and the only school that offers VFX for Film and Television is The art institute of Vancouver. I looked into it and it sounded like a promising program, however if I am going to leave the country for school I would go with Vancouver Film School, because of its reputation, and job placement statistics. Any other advice would be much appreciated.

 "I looked at Art Institute of Phoenix and its more along my price range but I don't know If its what I am looking for."

Â

I go to the Art Institute of Philadelphia and some of the Animation and FX kids are outrageously amazing at what they do. So maybe an Art Institute near you would be good too, but of course check out the program. Some Art Institute are better for certain things than other Art Institutes.Â
