I would suggest looking for someone associated with WEVA (Wedding and Event Videographers Assoc.) - Their website is http://www.weva.com. They have a button on the top left of page to put a request to WEVA members.

Good luck.

Yeah you are going to want to get the Canon Vixia HFS10 or HFS100. Next price range would be the Panasonic HMC150. The budget lapel mic you want is the Azden 105 series.

I need a recommendation for the best budget AVCHD camcorder, both in SD and in HD.

My friends are going to film a bunch of speakers, and then send me the raw data on DVD's. They just plan to put a camcorder on a tripod, attach a simple clip-on lav mic, and then shoot. Then they plan to dump the data to a DVD, and then do that again for eight days. Then I will pick up the pieces from here.

My friends are clueless about three-point lighting and all that, and I don't want to overload them. I just need to give them a simple recommendation about which AVCHD camcorder and clip-on lav mic they can get, on a budget.

Thanks very much for your help.

For any purchase, chart out price versus performance&features, then simply choose the widget that's closest to the "knee on the curve".

However, this tactic isn't always practical for a newb. The OP is budget-limited and videography might not end up being his cup of tea. Ergo I gotta agree with zoobia's approach.

I have a Sony DV with a
58mm lens and I need to go wider. Maybe not fisheye but definitely want to
grab more field of vision, like we might find on good documentaries. I'm just not sure what kind of attachment to go for. Any recommendations?

I am a little bit plowed under this week, but I will try to check out the New De-shaker, Virtual Dub and Mercalli maybe next week. Mercalli is supposed to be fast, and easy to use, so maybe it might be worth it?

I've tried a few out. They vary big time...and some modest ones are included with entry level editors these days. I haven't tried the Vegas one yet...and won't because I've a good tripod now. However, when I didn't, I used this one for VirtualDub. Reviews are mixed...probably because it pretty complex. Perhaps if you take your time to understand it, you 'll get good results, too. It has many settings including 2 pass and really worked well on my footage. You'll need to zoom in some at the end because the edges go crazy as the frames are stacked. It also takes it's sweet time so you'll have to be patient.

Good explanation. Thanks!

I guess they even make a 'de-shaker' specifically for Vegas as a free download?

I guess my question is, is one de-shaker as good as another? Or is there one that is 'best'?

When you correct shaky video digitally, there is always a tradeoff. Digital stabalization creates an imaginary box - your picture is "cropped". The cropped outline moves in order to folow the video's stuttering movements and sudden jerks. You will lose resolution. The bad news is that the more motion corrected, the "cropped box" becomes smaller to compensate, causing further loss in picture resolution.

Now getting down to business... The good news is that there is a number of free digital stabalization software around. Hope this helps:

Hello.

A friend sent me some video footage that looks like it was shot with a camera strapped to a kangaroo. Does anyone know what software does the best on 'de-shaking' within Vegas?

I was looking at some software called "ProDad Mercalli", and it looks pretty good. The 'pro' version is $120.00. Does anyone have any experience with that?

Alternately, is there any 'de-shaking' software (or script) that is compatible with Vegas that is both reliable, and free?

Thank you,

Actually, it would be a better deal to go with the HV30, even the HV40, rather than purchase a refurbushed camera that is two generations old. Only, at best, a couple hundred dollars difference for a mega-difference in technological improvements over the HV20. Might even last long enough to outlive availability of MiniDV tape.

You'll have to research the cams yourself. However, I can tell you is the best value these days is a refurbed Canon HV20. It's a small handycam that shoots HDV and has a good audio setup including input. Right now, you won't be able to beat the value. It's about $420 US. Be aware that PAL cams can't send the video back to the cam for various reasons. However, you can simply store your productions on cheap HDD's these days.

As for which camera, might I suggest you look through the ones available through Amazon.com or B&H Photo? Read their descriptions/functions and follow with their reviews from users to see if any will fit your specific needs.

Read magazines like Videomaker. Look up their product reviews.

Whats wrong with B&H. If you've been going to them since the early 90s and haven't had a problem, why do you care about any other vendor? I wouldn't recommend anyone else anyway because B&H always seems to have the lowest prices for everything.

I taught video for 10 years at the high school level, and now run an educational access channel for a large school corporation. I consult the teachers in our district on video equipment purchases as well.

My first question would be, why not B&H? Their prices are always low, if not the lowest (while still being trustworthy). I was just thinking the same thing yesterday and was looking for monitors, adapters and cables. I checked a few sites and B&H looked to be lowest again. Although I've never used them, I have heard good things about Adorama, and their prices seem to be good.

Occassionally I will use Full Compass or Markertek... it all depends on what you're purchasing. If you're looking for a company that will put it all together for you and do the leg work of finding what is right, then I would suggest somebody local.

Ah, the times I remember getting the program started... headaches, joy, frustration, excitement, disappointment and sheer amazement at what kids can do. Heck, I thought I was just bi-polar.

GOOD LUCK!

Depending on what your looking for I have had good luck with adorama photo in New York. Their prices are very aggressive. The staff is helpful (especially Paul in educational sales) and they take purchase orders for payment.

Hey all -

I’ve come upon an interesting opportunity: to teach high school kids the great art and science of video production. Ooooh. Aaaah. I’ll run a newly created department in our town. Here’s the cool bit:

Grants have been secured and the money HAS to be spent in order to get more funding in the future. Though I’m not offering up any work right now (sorry), I would be ever grateful for your input on vendor recommendations.
