Hello,

I am a student filmmaker and I am about to purchase a new camera. I am debating between a DLSR (something like the Canon 7d) or a prosumer camcorder (like the Canon XA10.) My budget is around $2,000 or so.

I already have a digital camera (the Nikon d80, which is decent) so I am leaning towards a camcorder. I feel that since if I am trying to be a filmmaker and not a photographer a DSLR is not the right direction to go. However, a lot of my friends have and recommend them because they are versatile (in terms of lenses and whatnot.)

Any comments or advice? Is there another brand that I should consider? Do you have any other recommendations for cameras?

(Just a note as far as my post production goes-- I edit on final cut pro 6 and have a 1 TB external hard drive.)

I need to purchase a low end prosumer camera for shooting music instruction videos. Currently looking at the Panasonic AG-HMC80 or Canon XA10. Videos will be watched either online as streaming, or perhaps downloadable products. I like to have XLR audio inputs for channels 1 and 2 to split the audio. I'm currently using a Panasonic AG-DVC80 and have been very happy with it over the years. Any suggestions as to which camera I should go for? Or perhaps a different one altogether?

I have been using my Sony Handycam HDR-HC3 for 5 years now and have been thinking about upgrading to a more prosumer camera. Since i'm far from an expert, i'd like to solicit the opinions of those on this board for their recommendation. After buying the HC3, I lucked out and purchased the mic input ActiveSync hotshoe accessory and have been using a Sennheiser MKE400 microphone with great results. Since I want to stay HD, I was thinking about the Sony NEX-VG10, but some of the reviews have been less than favorable. I do not shoot professionally but would like to start shooting sports car racing documentaries (strictly amateur stuff but still want great results).

Is the NEX-VG10 a good choice? I'd rather be closer to $1000 if possible, and don't mind buying used. I haven't found many used HD cams on Craigslist, though. I also plan on buying a Beachtek for XLR if needed.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Hello, I'm rather new to videography as a business and am currently saving up from some gear via photography and renting video equipment.. I just recently found a group of film makers who use only dslr as video cameras which is a nice option because it's multi use and you get the nice DoF..

So here is my question, I mainly do wedding and party videography and was wondering if the traditional 3ccd prosumer is the best option or would a dslr rig be any good for weddings?

I mean does it really just come down to preference or are there some strong advantages for not using a dslr for this type of shooting?

Hey all.

Ok, so ive read, and read, and read and my head is spinning! I feel like everything I read contradicts the latter. So (and I read the post below this one, and researched all those cams) I was hoping for some advice.

Basically, im looking to buy a tapeLESS prosumer cam. Id like it to have good "low light" shooting abilities, and be able to edit in AVCH, MPEG4, or DV. I also love the idea of being able to add on mics, lights, or even change lenses. Yet only the tapeless, and low light quality are "musts". Im trying to stay around $3000.00 although under would be better. Mainly I shoot events for friends/family but id like to go more professional and actually use my radio and t.v. production degree (from 10 years ago). Of course its been 10 years, and everything i learned doesnt apply anymore. So Im turning to you gurus for advice.

So what do you all think? Any direction you can point me in? Id really apreciate it.

Hi there : )
I am looking into upgrading into HD from mini DV. I have a Canon Xm2 which is a really lovely video camera. I was wondering what to go for and thought maybe some of you guys on here can help? This website is really useful and I bet the magazine is great! We have nothing like this over here in the UK right now.

What I want is a main semi-pro camera and a smaller consumer camera with good HD to use as a static shot (using a MF to set the focus) for filming stuff on stage like music acts. With the semi-pro I also want to make short films/videos for my own creative exploration and documetry film to sell. For the semi pro I want to spend less than £2000. Perhaps £500 or so for the consumer one.

I checked out the reviews and the Panasonic AG-HMC41 fhd looks good. I also have seen another Panasonic on sale the "Panasonic AG-HMC81 / AG-HMC82 / AG-HMC84 professional AVCCAM HD shoulder-mount camcorder" the review for the HMC80 was pretty good on the website . . .

I would really appriciate hearing from people in this matter, thanks : )

I have been doing a lot of research on several used prosumer camcorders. For example: Canon xl1, xl2, and gl2, and the Panasonic dvx100.

I want to stay in the $1,000 price range. I intend to use the camera primarily for youth sports applications. I know these cameras are probably overkill for that application...

I'm trying to decice if I should go that route, or just go with a good new hand-held model like the Canon Vixia HF S21, which allows you to shoot in 24p, 30p, or 60i. (just like the dvx100).

I also don't want to invest a ton of money in NLE software.

Please let me know if I'm going overboard with the prosumer models I'm considering, based on what I can get with a newer model and my limited budget for video editing software. If it helps to know, my laptop has 1.86 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. No idea if that's good enough.

Thanks for helping to educate a real newbie!!!

Just spotted this article on macrumors:

Apple Refocusing Final Cut Pro? Jobs says "Next Release Will Be Awesome"

I hope it's not true, because I don't want FCP to focus on prosumers more than professionals. I say this in spite of being a prosumer. Not everything is supposed to be dumbed down so that everyone can use it. FCP is easy enough if one takes the time to learn it.

There's iMovie for people who cannot be bothered to learn editing.

I'm sure this question has been asked many times before! I am interested in knowing if a Prosumer camcorder exists in the $2000.00 price range, that has a professional appearance, Fairly good sound recording, and good picture quality, even in lower light situations, or am I just fooling myself that this could be out there.

Hello,

I'm looking for a prosumer HD camera to film indoors interviews, product shots, and people at work in the office/lab. I have a light kit but would like a camera that works well in low light so I can get good around the office shots. My output is to youtube/web and occasionally to a projector in a meeting. I want to be able to do depth of field and manual focus. I am considering the Sony HDR-FX7, do I need to be concerned with the CMOS/CCD debate for my application? Any other suggestions? My budget is ~$1K-2.2K

My question is in regards to output connections. Currently I have a GL1 and a GL2; BOTH of which have worn loose the 1394 firewire (mini) connections. I'm losing connectivity between the camera and laptop (using DV Rack / On location). Is there a better camera output I should be looking for when shopping for replacement cameras? When moving the camera over and over on the tripod, the connections have become loose. These cameras are approximately 6 years old and need replacing anyways. I don't want to make the same mistake with new equipment. Any suggestions out there? Thanks to all!

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and hope I can suck up as much info as possible from all you pros. Anyway, I have a JVC Everio HDD 20GB that I bought about 3 years ago. I have only used the cheap CyberLink Director Pro editing software that came with the camera. It's alright, but I want to upgrade. I've been looking at nicer cameras like the Canon XL1, Sony HVR-Z1U, and JVC HD100u. I only want to spend between $1000-$2500. I like my little Everio because of the ease of no tapes, but all these seem to be miniDV. Can anyone suggest a good camera to upgrade to. I mostly shoot in the wind shots and if I can get nice enough equipment, I'm looking to start making snowmachine videos like Slednecks.

The second part of this question is editing software. I have been looking at Sony Vegas and Apple Final Cut. Should I even be worried about this until I upgrade computers? Thanks to everyone for your help!!!

Would it be better to get an HD consumer camcorder (JVC GZ-HD6) or a prosumer (Canon GL2)?

I need a new camera that has great image quality. The camera is going to be on a tripod in the some local in a well lit room. So I don't need features like dealing well with motion or even great zooms all I need is really good image quality. The camera would need to be 5,000 or less, but I want good image quality no matter how cheap (I know from past experience that often the pricer models offer more features but not usually the best quality image). Any and all help would be most appreciated.

Hey Guys!

I am doing some research to buy a new Camcorder, and i found the Canon HV30, HF100, and HF10 with really good price at http://www.6ave.com.

I really like the reviews about the HV30, with all of them stating that the camera makes wonderful videos and etc..

My mom (Yes! I am a teenager trying to be a video maker! :] ) is always telling that tape is a thing ´from the past´.... so this make me wonder: it is worth buy the Hv30...??

For what i read, the HF10 and HF100 are the same thing, but the HF10 has a 16GB internal memory...is that right?? If so, isnt it worthier to buy an HF100 + a 16GB (or Larger) Memory card??

And if you guys know any other (not-so-expensive) camcorder (like under $1,000), please, help me with the search :)

Thanks for all the help!

Caio

P.S: The HV30 is a ´Prosumer´ Camcorder right?? If so, I would like to buy an prosumer camcorder (Yes! I will share the camcorder with my family) under $1000...Any opinions??
