Make sure that when you set up the sequence it is at 1080p and if you only have one processor it will be a little jerky with CS4. Try rendering a portion and see if it plays smooth on your system. AVCHD is very processor intensive so unless you have a beast of a machine it will not play back smoothly in CS4.

Hi Mike

Just found the problem is with the baseline picture - it was too tall for widescreen. Have now cropped picture oblong rather than square and subject fits perfectly - mask an all. lol. Thanks for all the head scratching on my behalf. Alice X

Hi Mike

yes there is a mask, this is the total of the subject (nothing cut off .... yet) i think the problem is with the background. When I render the loop the on stage portion is ok with widescreen marks top and bottom as it should be, when the chroma background is on it is full screen, although subject and background have the same properties - except the depth, i dont seem able to affect background depth in photoshop, there is no properties for this point. Any ideas? Thanks Alice

Alice, if I didn't know any better (and I don't as I haven't seen your project), it looks like you applied a mask to the musician and are inadvertently cropping the bottom portion off. If this isn't the case, open the Pan/Crop window on him, right-click and select "Match Output Aspect". BTW, since we don't seem to be able to post images here, use any of the various free services to post a screen shot and then give us the link to it.

Hi. Im a GL-2 newbie. I just picked one up for $500 and would like advice on where to go for good GL-2 gossip/communication/advice. I hope I'm here already.

Since it was used and it came with a Panasonic ME tape, I assume I should continue with the same brand and type (except all I can find are AME tapes...I hope that is okay).

I live in Corvallis, Oregon--far away from production companies that might actually give videography seminars--so, I'm looking for good online tutorials. Any suggestions?

Battery question--the one that came with the camera holds its charge for just a bit over an hour. I expect a good 2 hour battery to hold a charge for 1.5 (with display screen on). Are there recommended brands I ought to look for or just go for whatever fits the ol' vid-cam? (and, what brands should I stay away from) (can you say?)

I'm filming my first wedding tomorrow (11-11-11 at 11:00am). Wish me luck!

Hi,

Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I have pinnacle 14HD ultimate studio and whenever I connect my camcorder (recorded in either UXP or XP) it finds the files (.MTS) and the resulting quality is pixelated and looks poor. I'm using the USB connector and this seems to be if I import directly into pinnacle or copy the files to my PC 1st by essentially using the camcorder as an external hard drive and copying and pasting them into a file on the pc.

Is it due to the usb connector, my video card (which is HD compatible) or something else I'm missing?

I'm sure I have the right camcorder and software for HD recording and editing but the quality is poor.

Hoping someone can cast some light on this for me!

Thanks

Could be your tape. did you attempt to replay the vtr and then continue to shoot? you could mess up the timecode. Also, where did you place your tape after shoot? no magnetic devices nearby? It wasn't left directly under a heat source?

Hi all, I am trying to capture video from a Sony miniDV camcorder using Nero 10 and firewire. I can see the device on screen and a scrambled version of the capture. It looks as though the pixels are all there, but very scrambled up and some of the bottom of the image is being shown at the top. Audio is ok. Can anyone advise what is happening and how to fix it? Windows movie maker gives the same result. Computer system is Win7 core i5 firewire. Thanks!

oh, also--try taking 18 mins worth of different clips ALL SHOT WITH THE SAME CAMERA (which would therefore likely have the same codec) and rendering that into one file, about that same length. i bet that will render much more quickly.

i could be wrong here but i really think it's just taking time due to different codecs.

each of those .AVI files could be a different codec, requiring all kinds of time to sort out and code into a new file. i'd bet that's what it is.

try taking one of them and rendering just that one clip into a new clip. if it renders pretty quickly, then your software is probably okay. it's probably slowed down by the large number of clips and different formats. this is what makes fast computers, lots of RAM, and CS5's ability to use the video card to render, too, so appealing.

I use CS3 too and have experienced those types of render times depending on the avi source, the project settings, the computer speed, the RAM, the hard drive speeds, the desired output quality and stuff like that. Do you understand what avi means and what is involved in rendering?

Hi guys,

First of all, I'm new in the world of video editing. I got myself a copy of Adobe Premiere CS3 and I'm trying to figure out how this stuff works. The first thing I'm trying to do is to put several .AVI clips I have together in another .AVI file, so after dragging the clips to the time bar in the bottom, I hit "export" and choose to save it in AVI format. The thing is that this operation takes almost two hours! The final clip is only 18 minutes long. Shouldn't it take much shorter, given that the only thing I'm doing is joining seven AVI clips into one?

Thanks guys.

Earl, I STRONGLY recommend you acquaint yourself with the latest version of imovie.

two reasons:

one: it imports into apples pro res (believe it or not) which makes editing from different formats like hdv, avchd, and mjpeg avi's seamless....

Two: take a look on youtube for finalcut x, and you'll see the next generation of finalcut pro, might as well be called iMovie pro.....

anything you learn in imovie (latest version) will carry over to final cut pro x

Make sure your finished project is a complete movie file and not just a file image. Make sure you saved/rendered it out as a .mov or .dv file (Quicktime or DV) While I do not use the latest and most current iMovie (when I DO use it for a minor project) making sure the settings are as noted above has generated something that YT appears to be happy with. That, and making sure your final project doesn't exceed YT's length and size restrictions. Also, if your project has copyrighted music you will initially get a "silenced" audio track with visuals only playing. Over time, too many such occurrences and your account will be discontinued.

Hunter, it sounds like WSANFORD has a good solution. If others don't chime in with similar experiences with this model, you might try searching on the internet for this problem wtih the XH-A1. Years ago I had similar problems with a digital 8 Sony and I searched and found that a lot of people had the same issue with the same model and there were scores of solutions that all revolved around smacking the side of the camcorder. I am not suggesting that you smack your Canon but only suggesting that you search first before shipping it off to get repaired. Good Luck.

There is a lot of moving parts in a tape drive system. That was a problem widely known for the GL2 but I never had it. From rewinding a lot you can bend pins and you can mess up the carriage from a bad tape or loading improperly. Sucks to have a camera go down in the middle of the season but I would suggest sending it in. Last I heard on the "Remove Cassette" error it was about two weeks to get a camera back.

I have a Canon XH-A1. I filmed an Osceola hunt with it yesterday. After the hunt, I ejected the tape and record-protected it and then put it back in the camera until we got back to the room. I tried to playback the video so we could watch it once and when I turned my camera to vcr/play, a red X started flashing on the screen with a message saying "remove cassette". The tape symbol in the top right corner of the display was also flashing red. I tried to eject the tape. The outer cover came open, I could hear the motor run, but the tape would not pop up. I closed the cover and tried it again for another time or two. Not knowing what to do next. I turned the camera off and on. Finally I took the battery out and put it back in. Now it ejected, but when I pulled the tape out, there was a little bit of tape outside the cassette. I wound it back up thinking this was the problem. I tried to put the tape back in. I could close the metal compartment and hear the motor, but the tape would not go down and then would spring back open. I tried another time or two with the same results. I tried a new tape as well as another older tape in case it was a problem with that tape. Still the same. I checked the footage I had just recorded on another camera and it was great with no issues from start to finish that I could tell. Can anyone help me or tell me what is wrong?

Sorry for the long post, but I figured all the details I could provide would possibly help someone to diagnose my problem. It's a bummer for sure, but it's even worse now that it's turkey season.

Thanks in advance for the help.

We would have to see a sample. It's difficult to comprehend what you're describing.

For future reference - the first thing I do when returning to the studio from a shoot is to make a backup copy of the original video. (I also use Sony Vegas which is a non-destructive editor.)
