As one of the many Pro and Intermediate Gurus here in the forums, I've given tons of tips and advice to tons of Amateur and newbie videomakers. It's always cool to find an Amateur or Intermediate who has the chops to put out good info that even we pro's can find useful. Here's a vid by Dave Dugdale on 'How to Greenscreen with Adobe Premiere CS5'.

I have a question regarding Adobe Premiere Elements 8, not the Pro version.

I've looked everywhere I can think to answer this and have come up blank.

Say I have three or more saved projects (like baseballgame1, baseballgame2 and

baseballgame3). Is there a way I can join them in one time line so I can add start and end point and save them to DVD as a longer movie with tabs on the opening screen for the DVD? You could click the game1 tab to watch baseballgame1, click game2 tab to watch baseballgame2, etc. The underlying question is how to you combine projects to a larger project?

Thank you

Hi all,

I am Raj from India.

most of the wedding videography companies are small scale, generally owned by single person, of course there are a few exceptions.

Its is waste of time to edit and finalize all footage by yourself.

I currently handle editing part of wedding videos of some of my friends ( they became my friends after we started working together ) from Canada and UK.

It helps them to get rid of headache of post and can concentrate more on getting more contracts or marketing.

As editing costs less in India than any other country, it saves money and time too.

Question:

Â

I'm getting ready for my initial install of Premiere Pro CS5.5. Â I have never used anything by anybody previously (very noob), and my question to the knowledgeable masses:

Â

What's the best "bang for your buck" video card to work with PC/Win7Pro64 and Premiere Pro CS5.5?

Â

I read the docs where it specifies a 1GB "frame buffer.." Is that the same as a card advertised as a IGB DDRx, or is a frame buffer a "percentage" of the available video RAM?

My Win7 computer has an "onboard" 256M video card, so I want to get something that will not cause problems down the road. Â I don't want to spend $700, but I don't want the BARE minimum card either.

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated!

Hi everybody, this is my first post here, so I'm not sure if this question has been asked yet:

I recently got a new computer (Toshiba Satellite M645 (500GB of Hdrive, 4GB of RAM, Intel Core i5)) and I was thinking about buying CS5 Master edition. I'm a video student and have learned to edit on FCP 6 and 7, but our iMacs at school have CS5 on it with Premiere. Now my problem is is that my camera I use only has a 6 (or 4 don't remember) pin firewire port and my computer does not (that's really the one downside with my comp, no firewire ports whatsoever). So my plan was to capture the footage on the Premiere at school and then transfer those files to my computer that way I could edit at home. I was wondering if there would be any discrepancy between transferring files on Premiere from Mac to PC. I don't think there would be, but I would just like to be sure. I would like to know this before I put down money on Premiere and then only find out that I wouldn't be able to transfer the files.

My other option, if it is even possible, is if there is an adapter that converts firewire to USB. After searching the web, I haven't found one and don't think such a thing exists. But if anyone happens to know of such a device, please let me know. Thanks.

I currently shoot HD video with a Canon
Vixia HF S10 digital camcorder (link goes to Canon's site). I shoot at the highest
quality available, MXP 24 Mbps (1920x1080). When I bring the video over to my
machine, it comes over as an .mts
file which is the AVCHD file format (link goes to Wikipedia article on the
format). I import these .mts files into Adobe Premiere (CS4). I import them
into a AVCHD 1080p30 (29.97) Sequence. I do my editing, adding title screens,
music, whatever. The problem comes when I go to export the final product into a
usable format. I've tried all different sorts of formats to export to and
I can't get any usable results. If I select, for instance, H.264 HDTV 1080p
29.97 High Quality (a preset within Premiere) the video comes out extremely
choppy...as in the audio will play and the video will hitch along and be mostly
out of sync dropping whole sections of the video as it tries to catch up.

My end goal is to be able to export two versions...a higher
quality (maybe burned to a DVD or Blu-Ray) and a lower quality (but still HD)
for uploading to YouTube/SmugMug.

Any help or thoughts you may have would be greatly
appreciated.

While waiting for the last ep of the Great Camera Shootout, I ran across this video by Jason Levine. He give a pretty good demo on using native DSLR footage in the Premiere CS5 timeline with the Mercury Playback Engine. One thing that came up during the Shootout was that after transcoding H.264 video to ProRes or Cineform codecs, DSLR footage becomes so much easier to work with and color-grade. The point came up then if that's the case, what's the 'big deal' about editing DSLR footage natively in CS5? Well, other than not having to go through all of that transcoding up front and saving it for final render, I can't think of anything else off hand. Anybody got any ideas? In the meantime here's the vid:

In anticipation of upgrading to Adobe CS5, I downloaded the trial ver's of Premiere and AFX two of the programs I use the most. I have a fast connection and it still took nearly three hours to download the two programs and install them. Okay, I could deal with that.

Next, I went through all of Adobe's new anti-piracy crap and setup the program as a 'trial version' though everything is set for you to just buy it ($600 bucks for one program? Not happening.) Anyway at start up I get a warning that I have to update all of my GPU drivers in order to take advantage of the MPE. No prob. Just about a 15 minute divert over to the NVIDIA site to update my drivers.

Now, of course my GPU's aren't on the list of compatible drivers (why should they be when NVIDIA can get another couple of grand out of me to upgrade?) But, according to the list as of the 1st of May there was some suggestion that they had expanded support for legacy products. By the 2nd, all that info magically disappeared. Whatever, I needed to update the drivers anyway.

So, I go back into premiere and though I don't have GPU support, I at least want to see how the software version of the MPE works. I choose the 'Open Project' option to see how my HDV project load times are supposed to decrease and check some other things. I get a message that 'The project cannot be opened due to the video codec cannot be found'. Hah? Dude I've got codecs up the friggin' ying yang! Whaddaya' mean it can't be found?

Fine. I go into the 'Start New Project' section so I can just load some stuff and go from there. Survey says, XXX (insert angry buzzer sound)! No go. At least now I know why it 'couldn't find the codecs'. The only thing Adobe bothered to load was 'DV' settings! If you want to capture, DV is all you get! Now I dug through the project settings and yeah there's stuff for anything Panasonic has out involving DVC whatever even in the HD flavors. But if you want HDV, AVCHD, XDCAM or anything else, fuggeddaboutit!

Well at the moment, I can't even test the software for what I need to do. Hell, I don't care how well it handles 'effin' DV! I don't need the MPE to do DV work. Well I still have 29 days left to get some answers and hopefully test this thing.

Next, I'll try the AFX and give you a 'blow by blow'. Hopefully that will work out better. So far, I am thoroughly unimpressed.

Well, after getting the trial version fired up I get to the initial project screen and si

With the advent of Adobe's CS line of software (particularly After Effects and Premiere) they have been making a serious effort to place themselves on equal footing with giants like Avid and FCP. Now with the pending release of their new Mercury Playback Engine, Adobe's about to send a seismic level shockwave that the big boys better be paying attention to.

With the Mercury Playback Engine, Adobe Premiere will be able to finally take advantage of powerful off the shelf gamer GPU's and marry them with multi-core CPU's in a 64-bit OS! I could tell you how it looks, but it would ruin the surprise. Instead let Dave Henly show you what's coming down the pike. If it works like the demo everyone from newbies struggling to work with AVCHD to pro's struggling with 4k will be able to benefit! They say it's "to be included in a future release", but it damn well better be in CS5!

Hello,

I am new here and have a few questions.

1. What is the best video converter to buy - particularly for DVR-MS to AVI? I have downloaded several trials and have trouble really evaluating clearly what they are like. Avs is one in question. I do not mind paying $30 or so for a program (it is really hard to even find how much AVS charge for it!) but I want to make sure there is not going to be some limitation down the track.

2. I imported several HDV/DV tapes (which are now deleted) from my Sony FX1000 straight to my computer as DVR-MS files, before I got a trial version of Premiere, which imports it straight to AVI. As I need AVI to edit in, is it possible to send my DVR-MS file back from my computer to the FX1000 via the ilink cable so I can import it straight back into Premiere as an AVI file? It seems to say in the manual that this can be done but I cannot get it to work.

3. In my full trial version (1.3 gb) of Premiere, in the timeline section at the bottom, I seem to have lost the headings at the side where it says 'video 1', 'video 2' etc. And I cannot drag the clip from the source screen into the timeline like I could before. One of the problems I find with Premiere is that I keep losing my settings, yet when I go to 'windows' menu, the 'timeline' is checked as on.

4. Is there an easy way to uninstall DVRMSToolbox without a degree in computer software writing?

thanks for your time, most appreciated,
M.

Hello, I have 6 images. All of them are of size 1000x580. But, when I try to make a slide show of the pictures in Premiere and export the video, the size of the video is not 1000x580. It is something entirely different, with black margins around the video.

How can I have my video the size I want?

Hi there. I'm using Premiere Pro v7.0
I've taken a few clips that are .mov files. In quicktime the videos look beautiful and display at full frame rate. However, in Premiere, instead of displaying or saving at the correct frame rate of 29.97, it thinks the frame rate is 2.99 fps. The strange thing is is that the duration of the video is correct, so if I try to manually adjust the frame rate with the 'Interpret Footage' it shortens the duration of the clip proportionally. Another odd thing is that Premiere shows the video track frame rate to be 29.97 in the clip properties but then assigns a frame rate of 2.99 for the whole thing. Here's what it shows for one of them:

Type: QuickTime Movie
File Size: 151.08MB
Image Size: 848x480

Pixel Depth: 24
Frame Rate: 2.99
Audio 44100 Hz - 16 bit - Mono
Total Duration: 00;04;08;15
Average Date Rate: 622.55KB / second
Pixel Aspect Ration: 1.000

Quick Time Details:
Move contains 1 video track(s), 1 audio track(s) and 0 timecode track(s)

Video:
This movie appears to have DROPPED FRAMES.
There is 1 frame with a duration of 64/2997ths.
There are 7449 frames with a duration of 1/29.97th.

Video track 1:
Duration is 00;04;08;15
Average frame rate is 29.97 fps

Video track 1 contains 1 type(s) of video data:

Video data block #1:
Frame size = 848 x 480
Compressor =
Quality = Least (1.00)

Does anyone have a fix for this? Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I am brand new to this forum as of like 5 minutes ago. I have a project I need to get finished and ran into a encoding/compiling error.

Here's the deal:

I am making a wedding video that I filmed. I would say 85% of it was shot onto mini HDV while the rest was done with a camera that uses AVCHD. The problem came when I exported the ceremony clip. We shot the ceremony with both cameras (both formats). CS4 let me bring import both into my timeline and i worked with both without a problem. Come time to encode and I get an "unknown error". I realized that it was saving the video up to the point where the AVCHD format first shows up. Sooo i copied my work and in the copy took out all the AVCHD material and walla .. it encoded.

My question/problem:

Is there any export settings or sequence settings that will allow me to have both formats in my timeline and still be able to encode the movie/scene? Or is this even my problem? Feel free to let me know what I am doing wrong or where i misspoke; I have been away from the movie editing hobby for a long time..

thanks,

Hi,

I'm using Samsung SC-MX20 to capture videos for the web, that specific Camcorder does have a known problem with 16:9 videos, you can check the reviews @ amazon.com for details

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SC-MX20-Memory-Camcorder-Optical/dp/B001FA1OHW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1252801263&sr=8-2

The problem that the videos that's supposed to be taken @ 16:9 is being read as 4:3 by every software and had to modify the aspect ratio to get it right.

So practically speaking when I import the video I've shot @ 16:9 (better for YouTube .etc) using the camcorder to Premiere it shows as 4:3, to fix that using Premiere I right click and chose interpret footage > modify aspect ratio to 1.2 and the video shows as 16:9 >> Great!

Screen Shot: http://abdo.me/images/precam01.jpg

The problem is that If I made any editing to the video the display start behaving very strangely and add some green to the track, that mean for me that it's not being interpreted correctly. Check the photo link below

http://abdo.me/images/precam02.jpg

Wondering if anyone have some experience with something similar and can help. Video are saved from the cam compressed with H.264 in MP4 format.

Thanks in advance.

I've used Premiere for years and have now graduated up to Adobe Production CS4 Suite. I'm not a novice but maybe not up to being called "intermediate."

Here's my problem: I'm having a hard time understanding the flow and interaction between Premiere and After Effects. I've googled it and found everything from, "I edit in Premiere and just do titles in AE" to "I edit completely in AE."

I've edited a short video together and then right clicked the clips and selected "Replace with AE Composition" to add some green screen keying and that sort of works, but then it seems to lose information or not save properly... and I'm now officially confused.

In general, I'm wondering what process do you out there that use both apps use? Do you edit completely in Premiere, use the Replace with AE Composition? Or do you set up the clips first in AE, then dynamically link them into Premiere assets to be added to a sequence?

Thanks! - Laurie

I matched the length of sound from two sources using the stretch tool. Saved the project and viewed it - perfect match. Created a DVD, and created a flash file, then the stretched audio had reverted to it's previous length, both in the project and on the output (causing an echo against the primary track). Tried it again with the same result. Tried it on my second machine, with different material, with the same result. Seems to be a bug in CS3 Premiere. How do I get round the apparent bug?

What is the difference between consumer video editing software and 'real' NLEs (Non Linear Editing)?

Inexpensive Consumer Video Editing programs like Pinnacle Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements, Sony Vegas Movie Studio, Apple iMovie, Windows MovieMaker are easy and fun to use. In fact, I think they are pretty amazing. While these products can be purchased for less then one hundred dollars they deliver a level of performance and features that would have cost 10 times as much just 5 years ago!

While these products allow you to edit your video, create slideshows, author DVDs and export them to the web, the actual features are limited and if you want to do some serious vide editing, you will find you can outgrow them pretty quickly.

Consumer video editing products have trouble with long format productions. One of the biggest complaints we hear from consumer video editing software is that after 15 or 30 minutes the video editing become sluggish and the software can become erratic. Go even longer and more issues come up - the audio starts to become out of sync; the playback jitters; or worst of all the video and then the app just freezes up.

Advanced NLEs will all deliver perfect playback, regardless of the length and complexity of your production. If you are editing HD footage some formats and settings may require rendering before they will playback in full speed, but you will be able to adjust your playback settings in order to achieve a level of real-time that meets your needs.  Most importantly they are extremely stable and reliable.

If you are running into any playback issues with an advanced NLE it is probably caused by data throughput bottlenecks in your computer. We have several articles on our website which can help you tweak and optimize your computer for NLE. If you take the time to optimize your computer for editing, you will find that you can edit for hours and hours without any crashes or performance issues.

Why do I want to invest in a "real" NLE for Video Editing?

Buying an advanced NLE like Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas, Grass Valley Edius, or Avid Media Composer will not give you better video quality or make editing easier; what they will give you is a far more powerful set of tools that will allow you to be more creative and produce video content that is better and more entertaining to watch. The reason to buy one of these more expensive advanced editing programs is simple: to be able to tell your story better. That's what the heart of video editing is, taking a collection of media, video clips, audio, images and graphics - then putting them together to tell a story. The longer the story you want to tell, the more important it is to use more sophisticated tools to keep your audiences attention.

Once you decide to graduate from point and shoot productions and simple slide shows into storytelling you will want the right tools for the job. In this article we will go into some of the most important tools found in our advanced NLEs and their superior workflow.

Hi,

I've got kind of dilemma in which direction should I go regarding my NLE system. I am producing documentaries - mainly for polish national TV. Till now I've been using Sony DVCAM camcorder and Premiere Pro CS3 with Matrox RT.X2 (also AfterEffects 7.0 and Encore) on Core2Duo based PC. I cannot say that I am satisfied with my system. It is not as stable nor perform well as I would like. I'm experiencing numerous hick-ups and performance drops as material become too complicated. Recently I've made upgrade to Premiere Pro CS4 and replaced camcorder - Sony PMWEX3 - situation become worse. I got problems with timecode, performance is even worse, moreover I cannot use full resolution that camcorder produces - 1920/1080. It is time to make serious upgrade. Here are my options:

1. Upgrade to Matrox Axio LE - regarding to Matrox reseller, that system does not require very powerful platform as it posesses quite a computational power

2. Upgrade my workstation - for example Dell Precision with Dual Quad Xeon, by professional IO card with SDI interface and switch to Avid Media Composer or EDIUS transfering all strain to PC.

3. Switch to Mac, buy AYA IO card and choose Final Cut suite.

Do you have any other suggestions? The most important thing for me is stability of production process and robustness.

I would be grateful for any ideas...

I'm just starting off with my video career, As a professional photographer (use to Adobe Photoshop), I'm now looking into finding the best Video editing software. I read a few forums regarding this issue of FCP vs Premiere (one of them will be my choice) and it sounds it's more a PC vs Mac issue. What I could figure was that both FCP & Premiere are great, with the FCP exception working great on Mac (as it's ONLY for Mac).

I work on PC currently but is due for a major upgrade soon, my decision has been made it will be a Mac this time around, as all my friends tell my I could have just as well bought a Mac every time I build up my PC, because my PC's I've build up are so huge and expensive, and I use it only and ONLY for editing (not even e-mail & internet, for that I still have a separate PC) you might as well use Mac. So I’m going that route soon by buying the latest, biggest iMac. My question is I need to make a decision on an editing software package, FCP or Premiere. As I’ve hear great things from both, and also Premiere is NOW ready for Mac, I've not found anything comparing FCP & Premiere on the same platform (Mac) also you hear of big company’s using FCP on Mac AND/OR Avit on PC, so where is Premiere?

The thing is I need to buy the software and also get training on it, so I would like to make the right choice from the start and not waste any money as we are talking big bucks.Â

Thanks in advance for everyone’s help coming my way.

Has anyone used the Adobe CS3 Production Premium and then upgraded to the CS4 version?

I see that CS4 is missing Ultra from the bundle. Has this bothered anyone, or is it more convenient that way? If you upgrade, do you get to keep Ultra?

It might be more convenient, since I'm thinking most chroma keying can be effectively done with After Effects and Premiere, so Ultra isn't needed. Am I right?

My problem seems to be only when I try to convert a project to a Windows Media File. I use the 2 pass VBR method. I get an error the Audio encoding failed and am told to try one pass or CBR (Constant Bit Rate). I try this but get the same message. I first encountered this issue a year ago and found the fix online but thought it was a one time issue so I did not record how I fixed it and now I have forgotten what I did to fix it. Adobe says they will no longer support Premiere Pro 2 and promptly ended the techsupport. Any help on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Hello all, I need to prepare a Music Video for broadcast and Music Choice needs Closed Captions added to it.

I've searched for answers online and have come up with no real answers. Just encounters with shockingly over-priced software for what seems would be a relatively painless procedure.

I run Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, and Adobe After Effects.

Thank you!

I know that people (regardless of occupation) have preferred tools for various reasons, whether it's familiarity, sentimentality or whatever. In the most recent issue of VM, there's a review of the new Avid. Living within walking distance of WB, Disney, Nickelodeon, etc, I'm fully aware of Avid's position in the industry. However, I'm wondering why it holds such prominence in the industry compared to Premiere or other NLE's. I'm well aware of its dominance early on, but why do Avid users contiunue to say it's so far ahead of Premiere? At home, I have a version of Premiere from a long time ago (I've mainly concentrated on web design for the past 10 years), but now I'm editing video at work and am using CS3 and the difference is night and day.

The reason I ask is for my home system. When I upgrade my system at home, I might get Avid, but is the difference in the software great enough to justify paying for a new version of Avid that would be twice as much as an upgrade to Production Premium CS4? Also, I look at what happened with QuarkXPress. It was the industry standard in print because there was no alternative that could touch it. However, InDesign came along and now people are jumping to ID (and there are several Quark-hating blogs out there) and leaving Quark behind. If Avid is better, why is it so much better? What can it do that Premiere can't?
