Hi

Can anyone advise the best workflow to get the best output possible in PP5? I've been shooting in 1080p at 25fps. I rendered a 75 minute project as .h264 at 1080p and thought that the final product was a bit jerky and somehow looked overexposed on my Samsung LED. I changed settings twice (720p, mpeg4) but I'm really confused at the files that were produced and the fact VLC can't read them. At various times there seem to be separated audio and visual files ( I tried .h264 bluray so I'm sort of comprehending that will need to be authored). All I really want to know is a good method of inputting my Nex files and turning out a file that I can play from a hdd and/or author as a bluray or DVD disc. We're PAL in OZ by the way. If you can help that'd be great.

Cheers

-> RAM

RAM for other Applications 3GB
RAM for AE PR EN ME 21GB

I use the system now for 2 weeks and am totally impressed about speed,
reliability, rendering speeds and quality of this system. My video
production is about 5 times faster as on my old quad i5, 8GB RAM. To
work in After Effects is a dream. All effects can be watched in real-time. Premiere Pro uses the Mercury Engine via the GTX580 that enhances the speed significantly.

My system is 100% stable. When scrubbing fast on the timeline on my old
computer, premiere pro crashed once in a while. Not anymore. Whatever I
do now - is rock solid!!!

I was especially surprised about the GTX580. I use 2 Monitors (Dell 3011
with 2560x1600) and (Dell 2408 with 1920x1200) on the same GTX580. I
didn't believe it that I can run both Monitors with 32 bit color and
60Hz refresh-rate. This is a real dream for video editing to have that
much real-estate, especially when working in HD.

Premiere Pro 5.5 is just an incredible software. I just recently did a project with 4 different HD formats and 25fps and 30fps frame rate. No problem. The timeline takes it all and on the final output there is hardly any difference.

With my old computer I had all this red rendering frames on top of the timeline. They are now yellow instead. Most filters and transitions do not require rendering and can be watched in real time.

Over all, I'm very happy with the system. Thanks to Maingear, the computer manufacturer and Adobe with the new edition of PP CS5.5

System value: about 4K$ (Computer only).

Only thing I noticed is that some of the dialogue was a little hard for me to understand but that maybe my senior citizen hearing! This didn't prevent me from enjoying the video and favorable consider the company's ad. Keep shooting.

there are three things I regulary have to do with my HV20 and PremPro CS3.

HV20/30/40 - (find and) hit the reset. Then make sure the output is set for HDV, not AUTO.

In the Capture window of CS3 there is an option to capture HD. I often forget about it and then, an hour later, when the tape is captured (and it's crap) I go back and capture properly.

hope that helps

Ivan,

Off the top of my head the simplest solution is to put a 4:3 'mask' on the video you want to use. Tough part will be keeping the point of interest in frame if the shooter took full advantage of the 16:9 frame. As you've already found out, resizing doesn't give good results. Look in the Help section of PPro CS3 for 4:3 and 16:9 masks to see how you can apply them. You could do it in AFX as well.

I have been given a clip that was shot in 16:9 format (clip A). The presentation movie is in 4:3 (movie B). I have to edit the 16:9 clip and incorporate it into the 4:3 movie.

What I have tried makes clip A figures, text, etc. look tall and skinny. How can I keep the aspect ratio so it will look good and fit in movie B? I don't know what to do.

What would the workflow be, step by step e.g. insert clip A then add text and effects, add text and effects then insert clip A, other? I have After Effects available if that would help accomplish what I need.

Thank you for your time.

"Can you edit in Vegas using clips captured with Cyberlink or Corel (or
some other lower level NLE)? Do they just open when selected, or is
there a trick to it?"

Ophelia,

When using lower end NLE software in the PC environment, switching to use in a more prosumer/pro NLE environment will depend on your primary set of codecs. Case in point, generally if it will play in Win Media Player your pro apps should be able to work with it no prob. Same goes with Quicktime if your NLE (which it should) has support for .mov, mpeg-4 and so on files. Easiest way to check is to capture a sample clip in Cyberlink or whatever and try to open the clip in WMP or QT. If it does play you should be good to go. If it doesn't it's usually because you don't have a corresponding codec on your machine or it's just not compatible with WMP or QT. The problem with that is usually consumer editing software often does not allow for you to convert the footage to something 'usable' by pro NLE's. So unless you pick up some converter software like 'Cat mentioned, you may have to suck it up and deal with your footage as is.

I use New Blue FX AVCHD UpShift - Does a stellar job! My only complaint would be how long it takes (I sometimes have hours of MTS files) on a Pentium IV @ 2.6 GHz w/ 3GB RAM. At some point I will have a more modern computer which will make conversion faster or might make it unnecessary entirely.

Hi Ophelia -

To answer you question I would need to know what format those apps capture video in - Vegas is very robust and will edit many different formats natively (including AVCHD, MPEG-2 or Red One) as long as your PC can handle it (I would recommend the biggest, fastest, most memory machines for some of those).

Vegas Pro 9 Tech Specs - http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/techspecs

Personally, I edit AVCHD (MTS), MPEG-2, AVI and Quicktime (MOV) directly on the timeline (I usually convert MTS to M2T first).

Okay - so in "newb" speak - you can edit your project with say Avid or Premiere using clips you captured in Vegas? Correct? Now, can you turn that around? Can you edit in Vegas using clips captured with Cyberlink or Corel (or some other lower level NLE)? Do they just open when selected, or is there a trick to it?

Thanks Rob & Composite. I should have used a different comparison - like Cyberlink and CS5. Basically, I was wondering if I would have to start from scratch (re-capture) in order to re-work a story created in a basic/simpler video program.

Ophelia,

Yeah it can be done in a pinch, but like Rob I don't necessarily recommend it. Case in point, I was capturing racing footage via CS3 (Premiere Pro) but found some issues to be worked out between the software and the deck I was using. Since I was under the gun, I just captured the footage in Vegas. Though I could have used Vegas to edit the piece, there was a certain workflow I needed to follow and Premiere would make that work. The captured footage played well in Premiere, but then new issues popped up with the differences in the footage filing systems between the two programs. Fortunately, it was a simple fix but it could have been a major pain. Now I have all the 'ssues' worked out but unless it's an emergency, I only capture within the program I'm using.

Now a workaround can come from a capture card like the types made by Black Magic Designs, AJA and Matrox to name a few. NLE's primarily use a software solution and firewire (or God forbid USB) to capture your footage. Capture cards on the other hand use dedicated hardware/software solutions to capture footage via a link to your NLE software or in some cases independently. I tend to like this option because you can bring in your software in a much more NLE friendly format and quality level. Not to mention if you're working with other editors on a project, it makes it easier to package the footage for them to use if they aren't using your exact NLE software.

that's not really a good workflow unless you have a specific reason for capturing with one program and editing in another.

For example, one may want to capture as ProRes with Final Cut, edit in Avid, and then go back to Final Cut so they can color grade with Color

When I saved one to a flash drive and tried to import into Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, I received a non supported file type message and wasn't able to bring it into the NLE. Is there any way to convert this (these) file type(s) into something I can use in Premiere Pro?

Let me begin by saying that I'm happy to have found this site as there is tons of very useful information here. I've searched the forums a bit for a problem similar to mine, but i can't seem to find anything similar or I just don't know what the "keyword" is to find that golden thread with my answer. Anyway, I'm having a problem when I import an .avi file and take a clip from it and drag it to the timeline and then render it. It's very pixelated and isn't nearly of the quality of the original video. What setting have I screwed up that is causing this problem? Thanks very much for your help gurus of video.

AE Motion Tracking will keep the graphic stuck to the wall while the wall or other things move, if that is what you mean by

"and remains perfectly still despite a little (deliberate) camera movement"

Just keeping the graphic still while everything else moves is easy so I didnt' think that is what you meant.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try the Photoshop/After Effects suggestion from Grinner first.

I hadn't considered the idea of double masking...and don't think I really want to try it either!

Thanks again

Create it in photoshop first, complete with paint drips. You shake it and animate masks in AE for the drips/runs and the principal in the foreground to cover it.

Interesting...

for the first part you could make an image file of "our hero..." using a graphics program and the spraypaint brush option. Save as png or gif with transparent background (or key out background)

then open a sequence with your wall footage (timeline 1), place your image infront of the wall (timeline 2).

In a new sequence add your previous sequence and add your camera movement to the previous sequence, the wall and spraypaint will move together.

Adding your talent will be more difficult. If you are saying your hero is in the first sequence in front of the wall, you will have to mask him out so the lettering appears behind him. That would be a better AE job than PP one. The second person you are adding confuses me. If that person is already in the scene you'll have to mask out that person too so you can keep the text behind.

Double masking gets REALLY complicated and you'd have to wonder, at some point, if it would be better to green screen the talent and put them in front of a composed image background of a wall with spray paint writing vs hours in front of AE masking two characters.

Hi everyone [big breath]...this is my first post! I have already learned so much here just by reading through the forums and blogs. But I have not been able to find a solution to this:

My producton is about a cricket match. In the background is a brick wall, and the foreground is a player getting padded up (ready for their game-saving knock!). I want to do the following:

1. Have a title ('our hero dons his armour') that looks like it is spray-painted on the brick wall and remains perfectly still despite a little (deliberate) camera movement; and

2. Additionally, I would like some of the foreground element (another person assisting in the padding up) to obscure the title.

What do I need to do to achieve this effect? I also have After Effects if that helps in achieving this vision....

Thanks in advance

Adobe Encore supports 32 subtitle tracks, that means you can add 32 different subtitle languages. Usually, there are two ways to add subtitle: 1) type every word into the "monitor" window, but first thing you should do is to create a new "subtitle track" in the " timeline", and then select " add subtitle" in the "monitor" window, drug the "current-time indicator" to the correct time point, finally type the subtitle words in the " monitor" window.
The second way is more simple. You should create a script text, save as "UTF-8" format. Then right click the blank space of" timeline",select " import subtitles>>text script" to import the text.
