'Grinner', I think you miss my point. Yes, no doubt if I wanted to downscale widescreen to 'letterbox', I could contrive to do so, but I don't. I have done a lot of downscaling/upscaling/aspect-ratio changes over the years, beginning in 2005, when I decided after several days of shooting, that working in 4:3, merely to make my stuff viewable at my local club, was not the way to go, and, instead of waiting for the 'right' tides and weather, and driving 100kMs down our coastline (and back), it was easier to mask-off the 'letterbox' areas, top-and-bottom and recreate the 16:9 format that way. It is still some of the best footage I have, and only a very slight shift in colour-balance, which I have yet to correct, distinguishes it from 'native' widescreen.

Anyway, why even bother? As a critical 'test', lately, I recorded on a Panasonic 'Viera' video-recorder, several episodes of the prestigious BBC 'Life' documentary series and simply did the mpg2 conversion by allowing the unit to get on with 'what it knows best' and put the video-stream onto a DVD. The results were flawless, by my reckoning, and I would be quite happy with future Hi-Def. of my own put through the same process. The original material was in 1920 x 1080 (my own preferred format), as far as I know and, it was 'letterbox'.........not! Any aspect-ratio changes may be quite easily compensated out, by using sets of 'numbers', which take into account that the original CCD image was wider, and had been 'squeezed' horizontally to fit onto 720 x 576, (as is vital when intermixing stills and video-footage), I would presume to bring it within the PAL DVD-standard. In fact, using 'Virtualdub', all things are possible, and unless the initial cropping of the image must be individually selective (shot-by-shot), a bulk-processing is possible, as long as the material is still in 'avi', so it would seem that all bases are 'covered'.

Hi Bruce thanks for the tips but still no luck. I have honestly tried everything. I am now trying to capture as one whole tape then I cut it up in premier pro and drag clips into the time line, but still nothing. It keeps stopping I have to manually start recording again and its uploading the footage in different resolutions. This is seriously driving me insane now!!! In the past I used to upload entire tapes, and just cut as I go along as I would always find some clip from some were that I would want to use, I thought that this method would be a temporary solution but nothing. I am beginning to think that something has gone wrong with the camera!!!! ever heard of such issues? it recording in mixed formats? I'm lost :(

Premiere Pro capture window has a tab for imports - are you specifying you are capturing DV or HDV. It makes a difference. Type F5 for Capture, select the Settings Tab, click the edit button, try the 2 or 3 choices - you might find selecting HDV does it for you. Return to the Settings Tab to name your files.

In newer versions of PPro you can select many different project presets or make your own. New Project>Custome Settings (TAB)>Editing Mode = Desktop (then you set the video size)

Hi Ian, thank you so much for your feedback. I checked out all the settings in the preferences section and made sure settings are set to 16.9 but still having the same problem.

@Grinner, I didn't quite understand, my last attempt was Dv Pal settings, in the preferences section I set the aspect ration to 16.9 and captured. I only captured 4 different clips and the 4 clips came out with different resolutions. (When i check the file info on my mac, the aspect ration reads 720x576, 1280x576 and 1048x576) this problem is driving me crazy as I am already 3 weeks behind editing and I have a lot to do. Any help what so ever would be appreciated, I'm quite new to these programs. While filming no settings where touched, and when I connected the camera to the TV to check out the footage, the resolution and quality is fine. So I'm pretty sure I have narrowed the problem down. Camera to computer issue.

I may be able to help you a little, as I have been filming in Widescreen formats since the mid 1970's; in those days, of course, using film and 'anamorphic' lenses. In fact, I have virtually never used anything else since, and it remains a mystery to me why the rest of the world was so slow to catch-up, (or 'catch-on', take your pick). However, I have no experience of 'Premiere Pro' but use another, and much less expensive, product, (with 99 percent satisfaction).

It would appear to me, that if your footage is in a range of formats, (you have mentioned 1280 x 576 down to 720 x 576), it must have been captured that way. I cannot imagine anyone competent doing that, though, and the clear way you have explained your problem would point to that not being the case. The other possibility, would seem to be that you have failed to set-up the 16:9 aspect-ratio in your 'preferences' prior to loading your clips onto the timeline, or that the prefs have been changed at some time in-between capturing sessions, possibly by someone else using your computer. Was the format definitely locked onto 16:9, for instance, or is there some possibility that it may have been set back to 4:3, (for whatever reason), and perhaps not returned to widescreen again?

If your 'base' level is 720 x 576, my advice would be to use that as your overall format in the interests of uniformity across your whole production. I have copied quite a bit of stuff to variants of h264/x264 lately and met with mixed success. Video is usually better down-scaled, rather than up-scaled, in my (still developing) experience. (The reason is that I am looking for a format to standardise on, when everything is to be shot in High-Definition). I have found it hard to improve significantly on mpg2, tweaked as high, quality-wise, as the DVD-standard will allow it to be. (I think it is a 'Main Concept' codec in-use). There is less apparent 'grain' of any kind using that arrangement, no visible lack of sharpness that I am able to detect, and with 'ac3', good sound. That was achieved by using TMPGEnc software, since most codecs on offer as parts of packages arriving with editor software are analogous to the 'house-white' in wine terms. There will be a reason for the clips being in different formats. To me, the reasons I have given would seem to be the most obvious. My not being a 'Premiere' user, however has been a bit of a disadvantage in trying to unravel your problem. By the way, good luck! We need all the 'widescreen' we can get.

Hi, there I am totally new to forums but I am having quite a problem and need help. I have a Sony Dcr Vx2000 (Pal Model) and I am currently working on a new project (Bmx documentary in Malta) where I am filming it in wide screen mode. But I am having problems when it comes to capturing in Premier Pro. First of all I cannot seem to find a project with sequence settings that match the footage, so when I do capture the footage needs to be rendered every time in the sequence (Red bar appears up top) and my second problem is that when i do check the files properties (get info on MAc) most of the clips appear to have mixed resolutions, some are at 1280x576, some are at 1040x576 and also 720x576 I cannot understand why this is happening as I these are clips being captured all from the same tape in the same project. And by this happening I am loosing a lot of quality and cannot work on the footage as easily... any help?

I have only found two reliable, and cheap solutions...

one: 3-2-1 (loud handclap) after hitting record on all three devices and synch em manually in post.... using the audio spike..

and an iphone clackerboard ap called iSlate which again allows a visual clock reference to use in post.

time of day for both cameras is easier because you don't have to run a gen lock line. Not all cameras have time of day mode though. Hop into the ole manual and look under TC or time code.

I apologize if this has been asked and answered but I am new to video and this forum. I do event videography with two cameras and a digital audio recorder. Is there any way to use the camera and recorder time of day information to give at least an approximate sync for editing? I use Adobe Premier Pro and Final Cut Pro. I have a trial version of PluralEyes but it sometimes doesn't work perfectly and will cost me $149 to buy in 10 days. I could very carefully synchronize the clocks in the equipment before I start a shoot. All the equipment records to SD cards so there are file times recorded with the files.

I'm running CS 2 on my pc (xp home) and started experimenting with a tapeless sony hdr-cx150 for import and burn to dvd. Up to this point, we have been exporting in mini dv. We can import footage to the timeline and export to dvd but when viewing the finished product, it's almost unwatchable. It's very jerky and a bit out of focus, especially when the camera pans or there is action. We've converted the footage (mpg) to other formats but no difference. We also set the camera for sd, not hd. I'm just wondering if my older version of PP cannot handle this newer technology. Any suggestions?

I too am using Adobe CS4' It started out fine but then the time line got out of
sync. You cannot edit in the timeline when the video and audio track
are out of sync, especially when using AB-roll. I have been going back and forth with Adobe for three
months now and they have not come up with a solution. I have a super fast computer with 12 g ram
and quad4 processor. I'm running Windows 7 - 64 bit. There were no format changes from the first time I used CS4 to now so it can not be the format. Anyone have any
suggestions?

I have given up and switched over to Sony Vegas 9. No problem
there but it takes 14 hours to render a 90 minute video. I was using
green screen for most of it so that may be the reason it took so long.

So, Paul form MUVIPX.COM suggested a solution - use VideoReDo+ to Re-Mux initial file. What I did:

1) I opened captured file into VideoReDo+

2) Saved it with new name.

3) Software found a few problems in captured file, fixed them, and created a new file.

4) Premier Pro has no problems with this new file.

I had this problem with Premiere Pro CS4, and it was frustrating me greatly. The more I edited and the further along I got, the more audio got out of sync with the video. Turns out, it was the format it was in; Premiere Pro does NOT like .m2ts, (the native Blu-ray format) I recorded in regular AVCHD which is a .ts file that my Hauppauge HD PVR can also record to, tried importing it into Premiere Pro, and D'OH! PPCS4 doesn't support .ts. Great. I decided to try renaming it to .mts, which is supported and as far as I know, the same format and wrapper as .ts. It worked beautifully. All my audio sync problems disappeared.

You could try converting to AVCHD and giving it a .mts extension.

Have you try converting the video to another format? I like .mov, it works pretty good for me. You can also move only the audio, sync it according to the video and then link the audio with the video again. If your video have someone talking its much easier, match the mouth movement with the talking of the person. Nonetheless try converting the video to another format it may work better.

I have been using Adobe Premier Pro CS4 for a few months for a number of small/big projects and it worked fine. However, in the last two projects I faced a strange problem: audio lags video.

1) I captured 1hour HD material form SONY FX1000 in to PP CS4 as usual. I checked MPEG file using Windows Media Player and there was perfect sync between audio and video. Then I imported this file as an asset into PP and watched it there. The beginning of the file is O.K., but at the end audio lags video by ~1s. Same problem was in MPEG2 file after encoding. I tried to re-capture the file - no effect. Becasue editing was quite simple, I managed to correct this problem by settting audio speed = 100.025%?

2) Second example was much worse. I have compressed 1hour MPEG2 file. It works O.K. in WMPlayer. I imported it into PP and found complete de-sync between audio and video. Due to extremely bad quality of initial material all I can say for sure is that at the end of the clip audio lags video by ~13sec. It is difficult to say what happens at the begining but changing audio speed to match A and V at the end does not help in the middle. I by-passed the problem using different editor (Ulead media Pro) and produced required file.

So, what is the root cause of this effect? I admit, just before the first project I made extensive cleaning of Adobe files that littered my computer. Looks like I either deleted some important file or made un-intentional change to PP settings. I did not try re-installing PP CS4 yet. Any other ideas?

"I'm sure you all know how painful it is to work on a system with a CPU that is under 2.4GHZ and less than 2GB of RAM.

But the main thing is how much more fun and productive it can be on a good machine."

I agree Chuck...and I hope I didn't encourage people to go out thinking an emachine is the way to go for high end editing...lol. I just wanted to give a little honest optimism until the economy picks up and paychecks start rolling in and people feel comfortable with a new purchase.

But good point...going with a nice setup will definately limit grey hair and put a lil more cash in you pants. :)

"Before you run out and get a new video card, find out what type of video card slot you have (these things are very specific, no mixing or matching allowed!) I'd hate to see you spend money on the wrong gear."

yes...my bad, I jumped the gun...I don't know the model this particular emachine so I shouldn't have stated that so boldly...most Emachs have PCI-E but there are some models like the T2341 that don't....

in any event...I think Emachine is a great company. They always have current models that are practically identical to other consumer models, and they now only cost around $300-$500...lol. (if there's a will...there's a way.)

I'm sure you all know how painful it is to work on a system with a CPU that is under 2.4GHZ and less than 2GB of RAM.

But the main thing is how much more fun and productive it can be on a good machine. With my new system I can render, export and burn DVDs at almost 5 times the speed of my old 3.0GHZ machine. No camparison really. If you want to edit video on the above mentioned machine it may be possible, no one can say for sure. My guess is that you may not even have a large enough hard drive to work with, Premiere requires about 40Gb of free space. Not to mention other software that could interfere and that the processor must have SSE2 support or it will not even install.

Colleen,

Hooboy! Yeah, CS3 will probably run on your system (DV only, HD is out.) I agree with Coreece (as usual it seems) regarding upgrading. You're no doubt running a 32-bit rig so at 1.4GB's your system at best will see 3GB with an upgrade (most likely 2.5-2.75.) The extra RAM will help though. Since you haven't mentioned what kind of video card your system has I can only guess you'll probably have trouble on that end as well (slow performance). Find out what kind of motherboard your system has and you can figure out what CPU it maxes out on. With a little faster CPU you'll be able to squeeze some more processing power out of 'old paint' to help you trundle along. Before you run out and get a new video card, find out what type of video card slot you have (these things are very specific, no mixing or matching allowed!) I'd hate to see you spend money on the wrong gear.

Sometimes I'm forced to use an older emachine, but it works fine. When I first used it, it had 1.8GHz with 512MB RAM....I was able to edit 2-3 hour weddings with 6-8 hours of raw footage with minimal problems and ALL adobe programs worked fine....Since then I've bumped it up to 2GB RAM and I sometimes use it for minor projects or Short HD demos or motion graphics when my other G5 or PC are occupied.

You may get some red X warnings, but the programs should still work.

You may need to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system and all other software so that you are working with a clean slate and undue any damage or conflicting configurations.

If you can, upgrade to 2GB of RAM...I don't think it will accept more than that.

I don't believe you can upgrade to a different processor that will really make that much of difference...but a newer PCI-express video card will help the viewpoint editing process.

Hey all: OK I have a crappy emachine. On it I have 1.43 GB of RAM and a 1.91 GHz processor. From CS3, I needed Photoshop, InDesign and Premier Pro, but am likely in over my heard regarding resources, particularly with Premier Pro. I can't remember what the dialog box said but it was one of a few programs in CS3 during the analyzing process with a red X next to it I guess basically telling me my computer would not support it. I tried a separate download after I successfull got Photoshop and InDesign on but no go. I've been a writer for decades and am trying to upgrade my skills to get me a step up from dinosaur status, but am laid off with little money. I do want Premier Pro for a slideshow cottage industry I am considering. Do I need a faster processor? More memory (likely not, right?) Help?

Paul, I have the same exact issue. I just switched over from Avid to Premier CS3 with a Matrox Axio "super system"...hahahah. I was filming on a hunt and the cards were full so we hooked up the lap top and moved the clips to an external hard drive. Now they are MP4's and I cannot get the Clip Browser or Premier to accept them. Matrox tells me it will be two months before they can work with MP4.  If you use sonys clip browser and the clips load up...immediately export them a MFX files. This allows Premier to work with HD 1080I.  I am searching the globe right now looking for answers. If I find them you will hear it.

Some are claiming CineForm works for them. I have also found that MainConcept’s MPEG Pro HD3 gives Premiere the ability to work with XDCam footage, just as transparently as HDV footage, minus the ability to play back on a second monitor with a dual-head graphics card. Sound is there, as with video and the MainConcept CODEC appears to bring all the functionality for .MXF files. So the workflow is XDCam -> Sony Clip Browser -> Export to MXF -> import to Premiere.

You will lose quality no matter what you do. The DVDs are already a highly compressed MPEG 2 format and you will be uncompressing, converting, and recompressing, losing quality. You can use the free tool MpegStreamclip to get the VOB files converted to DV-AVI format for Premiere. You can also rip the DVDs with Premiere Elements (versions 2 - 4) and export a DV-AVI file from there to work on in Premiere Pro. This is one of the features that Premiere Elements has that the Pro version does not.
