Mark,

First, what do you mean when you say, "I set the output to H.264?" Are you changing the Compressor setting of the timeline in FCP, or are you going to Quicktime conversion and choosing H.264 compression? If you're changing your timeline Compressor, that's wrong. Keep that at ProRes422.

Second, don't even use Quicktime Conversion. Export a Master by going to File > Export > Quicktime Movie. Make sure you're exporting at Current Settings and the Make Movie Self-Contained option is check marked. Then bring your Master into Compressor to create your H.264 and MPEG files. Compressor will do a better job.

Also, you didn't explain your H.264 settings...

Mark,

I take my m2ts clips, archive them 'as-shot', then make a conversion to the PAL equivalent of your format (720 x 576) in mpg2 of good quality. I am not familiar with the procedure to be followed in Apple's 'Final Cut', because I do not use it. A great deal depends upon the quality of 'codecs', (I use 'Main Concept') and what settings you employ. For example I have reduced my GOP's to twelve, from the default fifteen. Taken overall, that sometimes gives your clips an 'edge', because of the increased density of the all-important 'I-frames'. Within mpg2, itself, I tweak everything up close to the upper-limits permitted by the DVD-Standard. That makes for somewhat larger files and longer processing-times, but pays dividends in the quality of the finished product. My philosophy is that having my footage, for editing, available as good-quality mpg2 saves a lot of hassles and permits a very direct route to disc. But, some purists might not agree with that, with (say) my bit-rate of 9200, for example, as standard. There is another school of thought which regards hoisting the rate above 7000, as a waste-of-time, just the same as there are those who say that you cannot 'improve' on 'ffmpeg' as a codec. What I do know, is that I am quite happy with the comparatively minor amount of the original m2ts image-quality which has to be sacrificed on the way to DVD. None of this addresses your problem, directly, but some of it may be helpful.

I take my ,mts files and throw them into Toast converting them to Apple ProRes 422, to edit into Final Cut Pro 7. I will edit my piece, then using Quicktime conversion in FCP, I set the output to usually h.264, and the size sometimes to 720x480, 16:9 since I seldom need pure HD, and export it to my external hard drive. If I compress I use MPEG Streamclip, but I don't usually compress all that much since I editing short pieces mostly.

I am having some trouble with codecs and compression when I am outputting in Final Cut Pro Studio 7.

I transfer all my .mts files to Apple ProRes 422, and proceed to edit. When I am done with the edit and ready to output, I generally select h.264 but sometimes I use Mpeg 4. When I output my video looks a little pixelated and not near as sharp as others that use h.264. I might be overlooking a setting when I export, hence the question here in the forum.

Rob, the new Mac Pro's do not need a raid card, it is right on the board now. I just got one about 3 months ago and it is really simple to do. One problem I can see from his current system is that he only has two gig of ram. If he goes to http://www.crucial.com it can scan his system and see how much he can cram into it.

Also a few 1.5 terabyte hard drives could be in order, they are getting cheaper every day. Get another 250 gig hard drive and then you can set the two 250's to raid 1 and the 1.5's to raid 0 and you could be rocking and rolling.

One question, are those Intel processors or are they another brand. If they are Intel you may also be able to plug in a graphics processing card, if FCP accepts them that is. I use Premiere and love the Mercury Play Back engine as it helps to speed up the rendering process.

Hope this helps.

I have a Mac Pro with that same processor. I never sit around wishing it was faster, so I'm wondering if the problem your media management. You only listened on hard drive - the 250GB drive. Is that the only drive in your computer and the only drive you use for video editing? If so, then yes your computer will be very slow and it will be more cost effective to by the proper storage devices.

But if you are handling your media correctly and still need a faster computer, buying new Mac Pro will last longer because they're expandable and they stuff more processors in them. So it takes longer for them to be perceived as "slow."

If you upgrade to the new FCP, you're stuck with FCP X, which doesn't open old projects. I think Apple is still offering FCS (FCP7), but there's a catch to it or something.

And as for backup, well, you need to have a hard drive (or preferably a RAID) dedicated to your projects and a hard drive dedicated to backing up the memory cards that your camera records to (if you've made the leap to solid state recording). Then you need to back up both of those drives. G-Tech is a good source for RAIDs and hard drives.

I edit film with FCP and I have reached a point where I need a better computer. The Mac Pro I have now dates from 2006/2007 and is way to slow for my needs. The question now is: should I upgrade the computer I have or should I buy a new iMac or Mac Pro. I would appreciate any advice! I'm of course looking for the most cost effective solution.

This is what I have today:

Mac Pro

2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon

2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

Hard-disk: 232,44 GB

I might also have to upgrade my Final Cut Pro as it is as old as the computer: FCP 5.1.4 What would you recommend here?

I need a computer to edit film (possibly HD) and also a good way to do my back-up. My internet connection isn't very fast...

Thank you in advance!

On my blog site, there's alot of articles and websites that I have recommended to help us all in regards with pre-production, production and post production. I'm new and i'm trying to create a community within my blogsite so that we all can learn from each other and compare opinions. My only dream is that someone will push us towards a newer era in film/video creativity. Let's start now.

OK, curious, not "questionable" as this is your ONLY post/response in more than a year. That in and of itself is not a bad thing. A LOT of members simply read here and get the GREAT information that Videomaker participants try to provide ... and sometimes there's a bit of stuff to laugh with, or at, critique and simply just enjoy and appreciate even if it isn't exactly on topic. That's all good as well.

Sorry for the poorly aimed jab. It is a bit off-putting when a NEW member (like this post originator) comes on and her/his first post is a blatant commercial. The Videomaker forums guidelines state that this is not a desired approach to use of the forum, and some moderators go even further in believing that new members coming on and immediately advertising are taking advantage of the community, exploiting rather than contributing as a real community member. Videomaker offers advertising for those wanting to ONLY advertise.

I CAN see why they do it, because it works if they can get away with it ... even for a day or three. You posted that you purchased their product AND gave them a glowing endorsement. Not bad for a commercial company exploiting a wonderfully busy and open forum of people who use the products they hawk. And why hasn't the original poster come back on with a reply to any of the responses here? Just saying ...

Hey, EarlC:

Not exactly sure why my post would be questionable... I am a member of the VideoMaker site, and clicked on the forum link from the email list that I subscribe to.

I checked out the site, and was impressesed with their product. I usually purchase music through Footage Firm, but after previewing the music on their site I decided to order. After my transaction was completed, I had a question about how to download the files. The chat rep was very helpful and answered all my questions, though I did not plan to download the files until I got home from work.

Around 8:00 PM last night, I got around to attempting the download. I needed some additional guidance, and once again the chat rep walked me through the process. These days, when I see a good product and get good service, I like to spread the word.

I mostly use this type of music for my Animoto slideshows, and personal videos of the grandkids and holiday functions. I really like the 15, 30, 60 and full versions of the music in MP3 and WAV format, which is similar to the items I have purchased from Footage Firm.

I am not actually endorsing either Footage Firm or JewelBeat, but I have had good experiences with both of them. However, I do soundly endorse Videomaker with its seemingly endless wealth of resources available to users.

Regards,

I don't think it can be argued that the most creative seat in the entire video production process is the editor's.

I've always loved Hurt... and Johnny for that matter.

In '98 Johnny came down with double pnumonia. Things looked bad as the weekend approached and I had just wrapped up a session at CMT early one late night. We always did Life and Times specials and shows of artists that had just passed and the producer I was working with suggested we rough out a Johnny Cash piece before we leave, should something happen over the weekend. While I understood this from a news standpoint, man it seemed like bad karma to make an obit for a dude who was still kickin'. I explained my feelings and the producer agreed. The man in black went home less than a week later.

I too cried the first time I heard him sing Hurt.

and the last.

Last year I wrote an article for VM Magazine about 'Making Music Videos'. One of the things stressed in the article was to keep your mind open to the possibilities of what can be done during production and in post-production which can enhance your work. Here's a classic example of how even after shooting a beautiful rendition of Johnny Cash's final music video "Hurt", the editor was able to push that performance into an emotionally stunning piece of art.

Johnny Cash's 'Hurt' behind the scenes

Another example of multiple track use.

You have a long clip of a talking head. Nothing to watch but has a good story to tell. So you run it on one track to set the subject and for the audio. Now you have several short clips covering the subject of the talking head's discussion. You strategically place these on secondary tracks to add to the interest of the comments. This lets you come back to the talking head at any time and it still be in sync with the audio since it was playing the whole time.

Multiple video tracks come in handy when you are compositing (putting one video layer over another) or creating certain effects (like enhancing colors or picture-in-picture). I also use them when using track motion (where I move or zoom the video) and want to segregate the video so I don't effect any other video track.

Using special effects and lots of track motion, I have had projects with 100 video tracks, and usually average about four or five per project, along with two or three audio tracks.
