Hi,

Avid Studio 1 is much better and stable than Studio 14. It is very powefull and I use it for each movie in my web site this is a French grammar containing over 80 movies using many video tracks and titles. The green screen effet is more powerfull than low price software (more control) I recommand over Studio 14 for prosummer. Learning using the DVD supplied with the software and the DVD created from Class On Demand. Paul explains basic function very well is not complete but this helps more than searching and trying.

You can check it http://www.profmarcel.com each button is a movie between 6 to 15 minutes.

Well its all about the finished product and how comfortable you were delivering the product. But as for myself i started with avid, then went to final cut studio, now I'm with adobe cs5 master collection. Adobe is better for suited for me,because post production plays a major part in my business. It is more flexible to any aspect of production.Bottom line is its all about what your comfortable with.

I love Adobe, it was the first one I really tried anything on. I tried Final Cut, but after using Adobe, had trouble getting used to a different package. My friend lives by Final Cut, I think it just comes down to what you are comfortable with.

Personally, I have no idea how to tell if something is "user friendly". In my mind, if it doesn't crash, it's friendly.

But, I do know that platforms (MAC and Windows) and software suites are like religions, everybody loves theirs and greatly dislikes the others. Which is odd because, in the end, it is the finished product that counts, not the tools used to make it. I'm pretty sure that nobody asked Ernest Hemingway what brand of typewriter he used to write "The Old Man and the Sea".

My point is there is no value asking for advice on something like this. Since most software has free trials, try them all and pick the one you like best.

Or, alternatively, you could save yourself the extra money, and most of the 'user-hostile' aggro, and use Magix 'MEP17Plus', as I do. I transferred from Ulead's much lamented 'Media Studio 8 Pro' when that went, effectively, belly-up and the new owners, looking to choke it off and substitute their own product, refused to re-issue me with an activation-code after a computer software melt-down (which took me just beyond cutoff date, to have rectified by a serviceman). So, I happily use, either MEP17Plus, its professional equivalent or 'MS8P' which I managed to coax back to life by means of what is known as a little bit of 'lateral thinking'; but, I know whose products I won't be buying again, in the future.

Their interface is not known to be user friendly...many have complained...however that doesn't mean it's a bad program...I use after effects, and can understand why people get frustrated with it. but for editing, final cut is king. But they are both good programs, and no other can really compare...

"User Friendly" is pretty subjective. I find Adobe products very easy but don't take that negatively, French was easy for some in my class and I failed it. Different strokes for different folks. Personally I couldn't see myself being able to work without dynamically linking to other programs like I do. I catch a sound issue and in two clicks I'm in SB getting a sound profile. Need a great title, two clicks to PS and I'm a full fledged AE Junkie, I have it on speed dial. :-)

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 is hard to beat. However, with that said it really boils down to what you need to get your job done. For example, there is lots that can be down using a product like Corel Video Studio X4 and there are those that get by using it and actually making money with it however, if you are working on high end productions or have a format that cannot be read or converted (.mxf format) you need a higher end product like Adobe or Avid. For me, Adobe was more user friendly than what I found the Avid product to be.

I went from Pinnacle to Adobe Premiere Pro and haven't looked back. I had trouble here and there, but there's a zillion free tutorials out there. Plus, I think learning any new software has its hassles (Quickbooks took me some time, but I like it now, for example.)

The interaction between Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere Pro is key, though. I can't imagine doing anything elaborate without Photoshop and After Effects. You pretty much have to have them as you get deep into this stuff. For me, it doesn't make any sense to use an NLE other than Premiere Pro, since Premiere Pro can seamlessly import and recognize Photoshop and After Effects projects (not the finished, exported project, but the project files themselves) and I can move their layers around in PP, etc. It's great.

I bought Liquid Edition Pro 6 with an upgrade at just about the time it was being discontinued ( as it turns out ). It was a struggle for me to try to learn to navigate the beast, so I reasoned I would get my feet wet with the Pinnacle software and then make a transition to Liquid. Now, some years later, I'm getting the feeling that any further effort invested in Liquid would essentially be a waste of time; and perhaps I should be scoping out a more current, widely used NLE platform. What say you?

Hi Moab Man,

The last upgrade has made correction for the jumping cursor that is the proof that nobody check toomuch before a release this error was so big you type and you erase your text after a carriage return. Now I cannot use copy and paste from a text document or the text in a Word document. The program work well and stable. Probably Avid realize than loose customers is easier than gain customers. Personnaly I am not trust Avid soon a new version arrive with the same problems since 5 years, error in installation, patch, more patch etc...

Signmax that satisfaction was mine with each of the platforms.

What is the error in writing text you found? My videos have plenty of text with no problem. I do know of a quirk with the cursor jumping when adding text (figured out the work around to the cursor issue), but that may already have been fixed with the patch this month.

One of the things I had noticed with the Pinnacle 12 & 14 is that having a machine with specifications way over the top resolved a lot of the instability. My first machine was over the minimums and should have adequately ran the programs. But, when I purchased my new machine that was over the top in specifications the programs smoothed out. In no way am I saying Pinnacle was as stable as it should have been but I think in part that had to do with min stats or recommended being too low.

As for Magix... To lay the money down, have the program not work for the purpose I bought it for, and no customer support... money thrown away. Don't get me wrong, Magix has a lot of great attributes, but it errors for the specific thing I needed it to do.

Hi,

Moab Man, I don't where you see this statistic for customers<span style="font-size: xx-small;"> evaluation but my own comparison that is Avid continue to offer poor unstable product crashing all the time like my version 14 compare to my version 12 Avid loose the game and product like Magic strong in Europe gain each day in popularity. Personnaly I can tell that Magic has a very good product and hope that Avid come again a stable product. Nobody want to change software for the pleasure to change but many customers quit Avid for reasons. Naturally selling software around $125 is not interesting but selling near 1 million software and upgrade each year at $100 make a lot of money.</span>

<span style="font-size: xx-small;">I just purchased Avid Studio and found the first day error in writing text I can tell you that software verification is not really done. If you cannot write the text in video software this is a real problem.</span>

"I don't believe Pinnacle was originally an Avid software, they only recently purchased them."

They were separate companies. I was saying that the quality, stability, and capability is what Pinnacle advertised itself as and what Pinnacles software should have been, but was far from it.

80 percent satisfied with Avid Studio, 50% with the Pinnacle 12 & 14, and only 10% with Magix (threw that money away big time and never used it again).

I downloaded the trial version of Avid Studio yesterday and saw it had more potential than Pinnacle so I ended up buying it. I'm a push buttons till I get it right kind of learner, but did have to go to the instructions a couple of times. The few complaints I have so far is that there are too many transitions and effects I'll never use which can sometimes make the interface a little cluttered and makes it difficult to find what you are looking for. But overall I think I like it.

Avid Studio IS what Pinnacle Studio should have been in the first place. I was actually dumping Pinnacle due to instability issues/frustration when AS came out. You will love it but it is a bit different but with a little practice you'll figure it out.

Take a look at my other suggestion about exporting to DVD. Useful tip to keep in your back pocket.

It was an AVCHD file. I edited the same file in both Corel and Pinnacle, and Pinnacle took hours to make a time lapse video compared to just minutes from Corel.

I tried the Avid patch but it was not applicable to Pinnacle. I am downloading Avid Studio trial as I write this. I like the simple interface of Pinnacle but would like to be able to add more audio/video overlays. I tried Adobe premier trial version but would need someone to teach me the basics before I could use it effectively.

Probably depends on what format you are rendering to. There are many HD formats. Rendering to an AVCHD file takes many time longer to render than to an mpeg format such as HDV. You will get nearly identical picture quality, but the AVCHD file will usually be MUCH smaller, sometimes close to half the size of HDV, and often supporting a higher resolution to boot.

My computer in Vegas renders HDV(.m2t) files at about double speed of normal video. Rendering to an AVCHD (.m2ts) file takse my computer about 3-4x normal speed. I have used studio in the past and I know all these options exist there as well.

There was a patch released earlier this month for Avid Studio and from what I read it seems like it was also for Studio 15. And again, from what I am reading it seems to have corrected this problem you mentioned.

I shot about an hour and a half of the fog rolling in. In Pinnacle it took over 4 hours to reduce it 500%, but with the trial version of Corel Visualstudio Pro X4 it took about ten minutes and produced a nice HD file. Is this normal for Pinnacle?
