As Videoman says, but also there is the potential for development of a huge personal library of living scenes like V-man so poetically noted. Given the time, proper equipment and love for say, nature or even planes, trains and automobiles; also sunsets, sunrises, moon and clouds, trees, birds, waterways, waterfalls, beaches, oceans, rivers and lakes, storms ...

... the subject matter is virtually endless. The beauty of this is if you capture enough variations of, well even flags for example: flags with clouds in the background, birds flying past, a jet in the background, HUGE flags and miniature flags, flags in groups, stand alone (you get the idea). You develop a portfolio of video clips of these and can eventually offer an extensive selection that will market well.

The things in life that you love and enjoy, from puppies and parrots to babies and mature adults, and everything else that hammers our senses on a daily basis, can be rewarding and instructional at the same time while building your experience and at the same time developing footage that somebody somewhere would be willing to pay for to use.

Ahmad, shooting landscapes with a still camera gives you one moment in time. Shooting the same landscape in video will give you motion, the motion of the camcorder in relation to the scenery, or you can capture the effect of wind on the trees, hear the rustling of leaves, spot a bird flying through the frame, etc. Some say that audio is at least half of the video experience. In photography there is no audio unless you create a slide show with an audio bed underneath it. This is actually simulating video! I find that shooting video at non-event situations (landscapes, wildlife, etc.) to be very satisfying, although not usually as income-producing as shooting events. As you develop your skills with the still camera, you will also be developing skills that will carry over to video if you choose to go in that direction. A lot of us who video have some background with still photography. keep shooting.

Hi, I had Gh1 then waited for the red sub 2k price tag camera, which failed to emerge. With that said i moved to the Canon 550d. This gave me the shots that were perfect for B Roll stuff, but i always had some kind of back up camera to get the full shot on a tripod.

I must say its a very deep dark hole which has a steep learning curve for beginners. Also the extras you need to bring with you ie: lights, sound, and all the rest. I think thats one of my issues with the prosumer camera kits, you need to have a army with you. I try to reduce in every way my kit or rigs, this create a less intrusive and intimidating environment for the subject who is being filmed.

In terms of the hate towards youtube uploader's, well I think they are destroying the industry but at the same time created a bigger industry online with lower overhead global present and cost effective. The playing ground is almost even, which means quality and production time and cost will reduce at first and then creativity will rise. Oh i don't do wedding's, nice events but its not the way i'm going.

Oh here's one i shot with the 550D.

I know from personally having been in the published advertising industry that two things matter in print advertising: repetition and page dominance. Budgets for sustaining/maintaining either or both call for a lot of money. But as Rob pointed out and I also know for fact, a single ad regardless of size is like putting all your money on 21 or 00 on the roulette wheel.

Visibility and linkage in print advertising is established by repetition and page dominance (full or half page sizes) and color (huge added expense) is indeed effective ... if you can afford such an ad campaign in the first place.

As Charlie pointed out, a MORE affordable and effective way to spend $1,600 would be to establish a specific interest, limited direct mail campaign focused on exactly the market you seek to attract ... martial arts dojos, dance schools, public school events, youth sport leagues, and of course brides (if that's what you want and you work the local bridal fairs to get HOPEFULLY some decent mailing lists ... not always the case).

I've spent as little as $100 developing basic large (8 1/2 x 5 1/2) postcards, sending out 50 or less to a specific market and getting better than 10 percent response. I've ALWAYS had a R.O.I. and more than recouped my costs with these campaigns. I talk about them a lot, and other video production/marketing strategies on my blog.

Definitely expecting immediate results with any type of ad is setting yourself up for disappointment. The thing with ads I do my best to get clients to understand is that what they are paying for is the implantation of an idea in potential customer's minds. That's all. When someone decides they need a thing or service and they are thinking about where to get it, the client wants them to think of them. That's no guarantee of any sales, but if it occurs to them to look to the client that's half the battle.

Most people and businesses don't burn cash on so abstract a possibility for a potential sale. Not to mention for every single sale, you needed to reach the eyes and ears of several thousand people first. Print ads are growing less effective particularly for visual media people/businesses because the medium is dying. The tough part about selling a service is people need to either see what gets produced or know someone who has. Like Rob said, 1 $1600 ad wasn't going to do it. That same ad appearing month after month, year after year may have brought in a handful of sales. Probably not enough to justify the cost of the ad space.

To advertise as an independent or insurgent business or single-person shop, you have to go unconventional, widespread and cheap as you can. That and you have to place the ads where potential clients will see your stuff. Putting an ad for your production services here on VM is great for them (as they bring in the ad revenues) but it won't do squat for you because most people who read this are looking to get into the business or already are. Advertising video services in a wedding mag is good if you do wedding videos. However, you'll also have to gauge the type of women who are mag's primary demographic. Your style of videos may not appeal to them or they may find you too high or too low tech for their tastes.

Advertising with one ad isn't enough, and $1600 isn't enough money to spend either.

here is what she should have done instead:

take $1600.00

1) hit a bunch of garage sales. Buy some stuff.

2) buy some aquariums/cages, a;long with fishies and critters that are easier to breed.

3) place a "Free for the taking" ad in all free local serving online classifieds.

4) set up her phone line to answer with her business name and web address.

5) direct everyone that calls to her website to get her address to pick up thier free item.

6) put a brochure in with each free item.

people love something for nothing.

It was an interesting piece. There seems to be a lot of movement from old school ad's to new ways of doing things but its somewhat dependant on what industry and what region. I'm sure there are still some that benefit from the Yellow Pages, ex: Pizza delivery places.

Reading the responses to the article, to me showed how limited a print ad can be and how interpretation is completely out of your control once you let it go. Personally I think people are becoming to rely on video to learn about any business and the more effectively you can direct them to some on the net, the better off you are. You can provide more information to cover a wider audience to avoid confusion and at the same time convince them as to way they would give you their money.

Of course I could be wrong and all the time and money I've been spending gettinginto/learning HTML5 and smart phone tech could wind up being just another marketing loss. :-)

Michael,

Make sure whatever type of IVM you get, it has an 'on-off' switch. Also use rechargeable batteries. They last longer and you can reuse them. As for your camera battery life, most likely what will happen is your camera will go into 'standby mode' in between shot intervals. So you should get an extended amount of time on your battery vice it being on constantly. Don't turn off your camera thinking the IVM will do it for you! Turn your camera on and leave it on until you stop the shoot. Also, use some sort of weighted bag (sand, pellet or water) to hold your tripod around so it won't get moved by the wind. Make sure your 'pod is level. You do not want to try and level out several hundred or thousand photos, because you didn't level the frame.

Hey, I'm also a big fan of time laps. I've got Sony alpha100 and I'm considering to buy this intervalometer. What do you think about it? I dont want to spend too much money on that. And I also have a question. Usually when I use my camera in normal mode the battery life is about 2h constant on. If i'm using intervalometer does it saves energy between time when it takes pictures? That would be great but other way I can only shoot for 2h which is not so long for time laps....

I wouldn't quite go with 'jaw dropping', but those are some great TL's. Helps a lot to having an interval controlled dolly to get the sense of movement in the shots. Definitely adds to the production values. I'm currently on stand down because of cloudy conditions for tonight's lunar eclipse. Maybe tomorrow night.

Hey Shippocaio, I'm with SargeHero 100% on the music thing. I'm going to your website to look at photos and video, not listen to music, right? I might have my own music playing on my computer. Sometimes music on websites actually scares me. I'm not interested in hearing what the web designer thinks I should be listening to. I know not everyone is like this, but quite a few are. Auto-play music on a website is a deal breaker for me. I immediately navigate away, never to return. My 2 cents.

Thanks ofr the feedback :)

But i kinda think that websites that have no audio are somewhat boring and dull. But did you find the player's control? They are located on the top right corner :)

Hello Shippo

Nice website, it looks decent on my Mac using Firefox. I really like your pictures, especially the one that appears to be a runner looking at the side (great DoF). One thing I don't like is the music that automatically start when visiting the website. Personally I don't like websites with this because most times I have my speakers high and when the website music starts it usually scares me. If I don't find how to turn the music off I immediately get out of the website, but that just me. Good job, keep it up.

BTW, if the first link doesnt work, try to this one:

Also, could you give me some feedback on how the website is looking in your computer? Like, I want to know if it looks normal on PCs/Macs and all browsers out there.

Thanks again!

"It amazes me how far we've come in so short a time..."

Bruce,

Thanks for the nod. The way the cloud layer moves across the sky in the early part looks 'unreal'. I was so glad to have caught a partly cloudy day to catch all the brilliant colors of sunset. '85? Dude, you've been doing this stuff for a long time! Here I'm 'wiggin' out' getting what I can with my old 10D! Thing that amazes me now is how cheaply we can do this stuff now. Way back when you were rolling with RCA and VCR you would have gotten an Emmy for what I did in 3 hours waiting for the rig to do it's thing!

Wolf -

Really nice - Love the contrails and sky color changes!

I did some more time lapse stuff a long time ago (like 1985) and would be hard pressed to find the tape now (RCA video camera - with separate VCR - had time lapse capabilities).

It amazes me how far we've come in so short a time...

Rohlux,

Thanks for the nod. This is actually a much lower res version! The original is almost 2K! This version is scaled down to 720p which is what I work with regularly. Don't forget to put in fresh batteries prior to your run. On my first test I forgot that!

"Winter Sunset 01" is an example of why I am interested in learning to do TL. It looks really sharp. I like the jet trails.

Magnificent sunset here last night. I tried a TL but it crashed. At least now I know how the intervalometer works.
