Hello - I am trying to find a post here in which a member gave the specs of their newly built PC - it sounded screaming fast. What stood out was that they had put it all in an "Alienware" case that had been special ordered. Any thoughts where this post might be? Even searching with "Alienware" didn't get me to it.

Another brand new setup question:

I have an HP computer with an AMD quad-core and 6GB DDR3 RAM (triple channel?)..

The motherboard (Foxcomm AERO) has (4) four memory slots.

Am I better off to do 4GB x 3, or 4G x 4? In other words, do I gain in utility what I might lose in speed by going 4G x 4 (I have no idea if this is one of the MB's that does the 1-4/2-3 triple chennel wiith four RAM slots trick, VS. 4G x 3?

Thanks for any assist!

Hello everyone

I'm new to this forum. Need your advice on the best pc laptop to edit semi-pro videos. I am a church pastor and do tons of videography. I have a budget of $2,000 for the hardware. Am using Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 14 and/or Sony Vegas HD (not the pro software) for edits. Suggestions for laptop? Toying with either an ASUS or MSI but need help as to configuration of the hardware. Thanks for all your advice. Can't go Mac hardware because my church is pc orientated and need to use the laptop for MS office stuff too.

Is it possible to record directly to the computer, basically using it as an external recording medium? Kind of like the way the Focus Enhancements products work.

I'd like to do some hobby shooting (most likely at home) and not wear out my heads with constant usage.

Hi everybody, this is my first post here, so I'm not sure if this question has been asked yet:

I recently got a new computer (Toshiba Satellite M645 (500GB of Hdrive, 4GB of RAM, Intel Core i5)) and I was thinking about buying CS5 Master edition. I'm a video student and have learned to edit on FCP 6 and 7, but our iMacs at school have CS5 on it with Premiere. Now my problem is is that my camera I use only has a 6 (or 4 don't remember) pin firewire port and my computer does not (that's really the one downside with my comp, no firewire ports whatsoever). So my plan was to capture the footage on the Premiere at school and then transfer those files to my computer that way I could edit at home. I was wondering if there would be any discrepancy between transferring files on Premiere from Mac to PC. I don't think there would be, but I would just like to be sure. I would like to know this before I put down money on Premiere and then only find out that I wouldn't be able to transfer the files.

My other option, if it is even possible, is if there is an adapter that converts firewire to USB. After searching the web, I haven't found one and don't think such a thing exists. But if anyone happens to know of such a device, please let me know. Thanks.

Okay, for all you PC based editors who are lamenting that Apple's Pro Res doesn't come in 'PC' flavor, it's no big deal. Magic Giant's 'Magic Bullet Looks' Color Grading software has been around for a good while and though you may hear some pro's bellyache about 'how it all looks the same' are correct if you only use the preset looks provided. DoP and filmmaker Phillip Bloom's recent short film was color graded on a laptop with MBL and FCP (MBL also comes in PC flavor so don't fret.) In his video he gives a demo/tutorial on how he did it and I must say he got a very impressive look by just putting some tweaks in a preset. Imagine what you could achieve if you used the software to design your own unique look! Check it out....

I'm going to start making educational videos on basic legal topics. I'm a PC user, but am open to learning a Mac. I'm a pretty quick study. Can you tell me if there's a recommended PC video editing software that is preferred, or if you recommend buying a Mac and Mac video editing software. I'm NOT looking to become a professional; I would like to get up and running in a short amount of time.

Please be specific on the type of Mac I should buy and software program.Â

Last year I tossed out HP's Z800 Workstation for the PC guys to drool over. Well it just got better and though it's out of the price range of many of VM's readers, the Z800 is now faster, more efficient power-wise, quieter and is not any more expensive than the original model!

For the serious gearheads on the forums the new Z800 has shucked off the twin Nehalem Quadcores and put on a pair of Westmere Six Core 3.33 GHz processors (yes, I said '6' cores.) There's much more but I won't spoil the 'drool factor'. Take a look at the article at Studio Daily for a look at the new HPZ800.

Hello everyone. As stated in the title, I am a complete beginner to all of this, so I would really appreciate any and all advice. I'm planning a documentary-style production as part of a little project I'm working on, but I need some serious help deciding what exactly I need. I've been looking at some camcorders and researching as best I possibly can, and I already have a decent PC that I hope will be able to handle the editing side, so let me run those by you first.

Camcorder
I'm looking at the Canon VIXIA HF S10. It's a HD model and has internatl 32GB storage which I think would be handy considering I'll be shooting at multiple locations and might not want to transfer video to my PC in between (or have multiple cards). However, I'm not sure if this is the model that I NEED...it's a great-looking camcorder and would handle my project nicely from what I can tell, but if I should start with something lower-end first I'd be open to hearing that. The big question is...do I need HD? If I shoot with an SD camera will it affect the picture when viewed on TV's (will it be 4:3 or can I still get a 16:9 with an SD camera)?

PC
I currently have a Dell XPS 730x as my gaming rig that I think I should be able to use for the editing side of this project. It has an Intel i7-920 processor (8 core, probably 2.6GHz if I remember right). It has 6GB of RAM, running Vista 64-bit, and I've got a dual ATI Radeon 4870HD for a total of 4GB video RAM. I have one hard drive, and from what I've read on the Adobe website about the Production Premium suite, I don't know if I'll need a second hard drive (website says "dedicated hard drive for editing...."). Just not sure. So do you think I will be fine with this computer?

Editing Software
I've been looking seriously at Adobe Premeire Pro (and the other titles included with that CS4 suite). The biggest question I have on this is would I be able to run that software suite smoothly on my PC with the specs listed above? Second, am I starting too big? I don't really want to use Windows Media Player, and I know that Adobe Premeire is very high-end, so if there's something int he middle that will get the job done and make my project look just as nice, please let me know.

Alright, that's all of my questions so far. I am very much a beginner, but I'll save the technique questions for a later time and try to figure most of them out myself while I'm experimenting with my gear once I get it. For now, I need the most help with figuring out what the best gear would be for this project. I know you pros must read many posts from beginners and get tired of answering all these simple questions, but I would really appreciate any help you can offer! Thanks in advance!

My question is in regards to publishing original videos online with clips from tv shows recorded via DVR.

Is it legal to use video acquired from a DVR system in a video of your own? (like video clips from the news or a tv show)

If so, are there regulations? ( Water mark? Not full screen, or frame the original video?)

Is youtube's policy on this congruent with the actual copyright law?

Is youtube's policy on this congruent with the actual copyright law?

This is done all the time in pop culture talk shows where they review what happened the previous night on television... is this relevant?

any thing else you think might be useful to my inquiry?

Lately in the post threads I've been getting questions concerning the benefits / drawbacks of building a custom system versus buying a pre-built system for Non-linear Editing. To keep from taking over other posts I've opened up this one to specifically address these issues. Up front I am not a computer engineer by any stretch. However, since 1998 I've upgraded and built PC's and Mac's out of 'self-defense' because either it was too expensive to send out for repair or if I didn't do it, it wouldn't have gotten done. My current depth of knowledge leans strongly toward PC because it's still 'legal' to build them on your own. However, now with the resurgence of the 'Hackintosh' I am again taking an interest in 'mac clones'. So with all that in mind please bring your questions / comments about building and upgrading pc's and mac's, but spare us the PC' vs Mac' debate.

Thanks.

Which computer type is better at editing video. I have a PC but it is getting slower by the days. Are there enough software that is for video that can be used in a MAC. Also which one do you recommend me to get. All i use the computer for is to edit and watch my videos and go on internet like for yotube and other things. I am tired of having all types of error when editing.

I'm just starting off with my video career, As a professional photographer (use to Adobe Photoshop), I'm now looking into finding the best Video editing software. I read a few forums regarding this issue of FCP vs Premiere (one of them will be my choice) and it sounds it's more a PC vs Mac issue. What I could figure was that both FCP & Premiere are great, with the FCP exception working great on Mac (as it's ONLY for Mac).

I work on PC currently but is due for a major upgrade soon, my decision has been made it will be a Mac this time around, as all my friends tell my I could have just as well bought a Mac every time I build up my PC, because my PC's I've build up are so huge and expensive, and I use it only and ONLY for editing (not even e-mail & internet, for that I still have a separate PC) you might as well use Mac. So I’m going that route soon by buying the latest, biggest iMac. My question is I need to make a decision on an editing software package, FCP or Premiere. As I’ve hear great things from both, and also Premiere is NOW ready for Mac, I've not found anything comparing FCP & Premiere on the same platform (Mac) also you hear of big company’s using FCP on Mac AND/OR Avit on PC, so where is Premiere?

The thing is I need to buy the software and also get training on it, so I would like to make the right choice from the start and not waste any money as we are talking big bucks.Â

Thanks in advance for everyone’s help coming my way.

I have a slowly dying Videonics switcher, and would like to use a spare Vista machine as a switcher/recorder.

I have three cameras fed into the switcher via s-video to tape live events and church services. Audio is run from a mixer board. What I'm thinking of doing is putting three or four PCI tv tuner cards into the PC -- but i'm not sure if one PC can handle that many.

What I'd really like to find is like the Canopus boards we used to have when I worked for Charter Cable. Four inputs on one card, onscreen previews of the video feeds in an easy to use switching program. This was back in the days of Win98 and Pentium II 266Mhz and only 256megs of ram. If that clunker could handle that, surely there's stuff out now that can do it, too.

The Canopus boards are no longer around -- they were old when I got to use them. VidBlaster software is a reasonablepackage to handle multiple sources -- the only issue I'm faced with is getting those analog sources into the computer.

 Hey guys!

My parents (yes! I am a teenager!) had a 8mm camcorder (Many, many years ago!)  and now they have a lot of 8mm tapes with precious and adorable memories... So, as i am the ´´video maker´´ of the family, (i think that) is my responsability to recover these memories!

I have a HP Media Center m8034n with a ´´ yellow, white, and red ´´ (i don´t remember the name of that cable) input, so I was thinking that maybe i could use this input to somehow transfer the videos in 8mm to my PC and then, after some editing, burn a DVD with the videos!

Just a small detail: I don´t have any idea how to do this, and i need help from you guys!

PLEASE, i really don´t want my family spending hundreds and hundreds of bucks only to put some old videos into DVDs....

So, if yous guys have any info about this, i would be really thankful!

P.S.: My parents still have the 8mm camcorder (i am shocked, too), so if i need the camcorder to transfer the video to my PC, it´s ok.

P.S.S: I really dont know how to use the ´´yellow, white, and red´´ input, so if you guys know how to use it (like to connect a DVD player to my PC, or something like that...) i would be really glad if you could teach me how to use it...i dont have a software or anything like it, but i do have the Windows Media Center (of windows vista) if it can help...

I know that i probally wrote a lot of idiot things, but i am really new into this ´´movie making´´ thing....    :)

Thanks for all the help,

I'm getting tempted to build a new pc for video editing. I have no interest in switching to a Mac, no offense, so please don't suggest the switch.
My requirement is to build a machine that i can maybe get 5 years of video production work out of. My thoughts:

Antec Sonata
Asus P5
8G DDR3
2T (2x1T, Raid 1)
XP Pro
LG BluRay

For capture I use iLink from my FX-1. So what is missing from the shopping list? Is there a video card that is more optimized for video editing than gaming? I don't plan to do any gaming, and would like to use a 1080p Toshiba as one monitor, then whatever for a second monitor... or maybe two Samsung 24" monitors. Any recommendations are appreciated.

I need to be able to play videos i create from a laptop into the mixer at hotels and convention centers. All I have is USB or the 1/8"/3.5mm jack for headphones.

What type what do I need to patch into the mixer? Will a 1/8" to 1/4" or XLR connecor work? Or do I need to add something else into the line?
