Bill Dillon writes, "Thanks for the input and I guess I'll leave the aspect ratio at 4:3." Bill, if you could not see the difference between the two clips, then why leave it at 4:3 and have to view everything with those black bars on the sides? The future is widescreen. Set that thing to 16:9 and enjoy the full picture!

I made a 20 sec vid of the front yard in 16:9 and a 20 sec vid of the back yard in 4:3. Captured them in Adobe Premiere Elements 8 and rendered as an MPEG2 and save to a USB drive. Plugged the USB drive into the HDTV and played it. Other than the change of scene (front yard to back) I could not tell a difference between the two clips.

Thanks for the input and I guess I'll leave the aspect ratio at 4:3.

Depends on the camera. If it is scaling to 740x480 for 16:19 it is a good thing (DVD quality). Some cameras actually chop pixels off the 640x480 SD footage to make it 16:9. If this is the case, I would stick with 4:3

The difference is your 16:9 footage will be enlarged and fill your HD screen completely. With 4:3 footage, the image is enlarged, but black bars remain on the sides because the aspect ratio don't match.

I don't think there is a difference in quality. I believe both the 4:3 and 16:9 footage are upscaled equally. But the upscaled 16:9 is probably more pleasing to look at.

I have a consumer grade Panasonic PV-GS90P camcorder. One of the setup options on it is aspect ratio 16:9 or 4:3. I've always had it set on 4:3 and always had standard definition televisions in the house. We now have two high definition TVs. Is there any pluses or minuses to changing the aspect ratio to 16:9? Am I taking the same number of pixels and spreading them out? This is a newbie question but that's how guys like me learn. From the pros.

Hello Mike. Sorry for the delayed response but other things have taken my attention (short as my attention span sometimes can be ;-) but I wanted to let you know my first desire is to actually, someday, find the time and mental energy to tackle rebuilding ONE system into a retro-powerhouse system, with another as a backup. This may require raiding them all ... actually, with the exception of my own original dual tower (one for the system, one to house the drives and some other stuff) all of these were working production systems when I acquired them. When I'd go to pay and pick up, the sellers around Southern California turned them on for me, took them through a few paces, answered questions I've now forgotten that I asked and have also forgotten their answers, but none-the-less they were/are all in working condition. That's been awhile, however, so ...

Anyway, I go two ways with what I have: five towers and one flat case, most of them with toaster and flyer guts, TBCs and other components; LOTS of software and guides and how-to books, as well as the Flyer Mastery Guide by Joe Tracy.

Two ways? I'd sell the whole shebang and occasionally look back regretfully for about $5K plus shipping; or after actually putting one main and one back up system together, parts out the rest, selling what I could to whomever needed it.

So, at least for now, I sell it all or nothing until I reinstate my own. Stay in touch with me. I do want to hear your adventures as you proceed with this. If/when I sell or reinstate, I will do the same.

@earlc: Thanks for the great reply. I actually found a nice old JVC VHS-C Camcorder that is "professional quality"... I right now cannot remember the model, but it is a nice 3 tube model. I think that will go nicely with the system. Unfortunately, my system is an A2000 and though I have a flyer card, I am using only one of my spare VT4k cards in the 2000 and really need to find a second TBC card,so perhaps we can get in touch. Feel free to leave me a PM if you like. Again, thanks for the response and yes, the Toaster seems to have a place even in these HD times -- At least for CG anyhow.

I know what you mean, Mike. That Amiga Toaster Flyer system was to die for in its day and still has a LOT of power (not processing but creatives, especially Lightwave and some of the titling and real time transitions). And yes, the 7300 is a "very nice" professional S-VHS camcorder. I still have my AG-460 studio rig and my S-VHS-C model AG 3 Palmcorder.

I also have enough components to build three solid Amiga Toaster Flyer systems with lots of extras and spare parts from three or four other. Seven,I think without going into my walk-in closet and counting, that I accumulated over the years while transitioning to other editing systems. I'm currently doing all my work on a Mac Pro with Final Cut Pro.

But not a day goes by that I don't wish I had the time and inclination to dedicate a long weekend to resurrecting at least two Toaster Flyer systems and using them for certain special projects, especially montage production which would be a piece of cake, and re-familiarizing myself with Lightwave to do some really cool title and simple 2D animations like I was once able. They could be created quickly, it only took forever for them to render out.

Sorry to take a trip down nostalgia lane on the Amiga system, as I don't have ANY idea where to find a manual for that AG-7300. I hope somebody here can help you out with that.

Hope over time you'll share with us (at least a few of us MUST still look back on the Toaster with fond memories) what you do and accomplish with your vintage system. And keep in mind that there are countless high quality camcorders out there, even in the digital realm that have S-Video output and could be utilized with your Amiga Toaster 4000.

Greetings:

I just acquired a very nice Panasonic AG-7300 S-VHS Professional recorder which is going to be used with my vintage Video Toaster 4000 system. I have been looking on Google for the owner's manual (in PDF format) for this unit, but it has been evading me.

Does someone perhaps have a copy of the manual that they would be willing to scan into PDF form or I would be willing to pay for a photocopy of it if that is acceptable, though I do prefer the PDF.

Please let me know if you can help.

Unfortunately, HD cameras eat light. There might be some mode changes that you can make while shooting in low-light that may redeem at least some future shoots-things like decreasing shutter speed make a huge difference.

Hello,

I am completely new to video editing, and I started by buying a panasonic sd 90 which was what my current budget would allow me (+ batteries sd cards tripods etc).

Before purchasing I read some reviews (all where good to excellent) and I researched some sample videos online, all of which looked pretty good for a cam of this budget.

Now that I use it though, have noticed that the camera produces allot of noise, even in bright light- which is not very visible after the video is compressed, so I did not notice on the samples I watched online. Videos taken after dark, even in relatively well lit environments (such as bussy bar streets) are pretty useless. Is this normal for such a camera? I am bluffed because I thought it would produce at least decent videos.

Thanks allotÃ?Â

Hi All,

I am really embarrassed to even post this, but I'll give it a shot (no pun intended).

For my business, I want to do a multicamera shoot. Here is my hardware set up...I have 2 Panasonic HPX170's, each connected via SDI to a Panasonic HMX100 Video Mixer. I have a regular LCD computer monitor connected to the HMX100 via DVI-D in addition to a AJA KI Proto connected to the HMX100 to serve as the recording device for the single video shot.

Now here is the dumb question (ready for it?):

I cannot get the camera output for each camera to appear on the reference monitor. It shows nothing. Now I don't have P2 cards in the camera, b/c I don't think I will need them given I am recording the "mixed" video shot from the video mixer to the AJA Ki Pro. But nothing appears and when I hit the record button on the camera, nothing happens. I believe I have set up the mixer appropriately, because the reference monitor does show 2 mini windows for the two cameras, but they are white and nothing shows up.

Please help! And please be kind!

wow, that's a great suggestion. but i'm looking at HD. i wonder if there are any other camcorders with such low 1 lux. HMC150 has 3 lux; i was considering this. i'm was surprised even that the sony nex-vg10 is as high as 11lux for a 23.4 x 15.6mm Exmor APS HD CMOS Sensor.

If you only need SD, the Sony VX2100 is still a great low light camera - Only 1 lux required.

i do videos, not photo so i'm looking to upgrade my equipment. so far, even with my old small chip hmc70, it has performed really well, SO LONG AS there was a spot light in the event, which many times they did, or outdoors. lately, i've been shooting more no light club scenes and so it's time to upgrade.

5D can be expensive. so i'm wondering if i settle with a GH2 w/ a strong on camera spot light (long distance and wide angle), will the image be as good as Canon 5D mark ii?

i know GH1 is hackable and 5D mark iii comes out in a few weeks. but by the time i have enough money to upgrade, hacks may become obsolete or blocked, the later manufacture GH1 may be hack-proof, and in a few weeks, the 5D mark ii users will sell theirs for mark iii's.

i like 5D mark ii only for low light. ....but....
i like GH2 for continuous shooting, swivel LCD, crispness in details, 60fps for smooth speed adjustments, smaller to run with, and potentially hackable. (so i'm hoping to get compensate for lowlight with a strong enough on camera spot light)

budgetwise, GH2 + strong spotlight will probably cost the same as a 5D mark ii. but the other GH2 features are also important to me. what bother me is the GH2 smaller sensor. is it worth loosing all the other features for better low light? or can i compensate the low light with spot light.

lens, i'm already looking at the 14-140mm range, or canon 18-200mm or 24-105mm (not too familiar with canon lens yet).
speaking of lens, know fast lens can really produce well and enhance quality as well. GH2 has a f/.95 lens out.

Great video but I think some background music would lift it ... Most films etc carry music in the background even if it's only just there!! Great Job

Charles, loved it. Great job, this shuld be very effective advertising for Jerry Kelly. Only thing I noticed is that some of the dialogue was a little hard for me to understand but that maybe my senior citizen hearing! This didn't prevent me from enjoying the video and favorable consider the company's ad. Keep shooting.

I like it very much. maybe a little too much background noise in parts of the audio.. but this is basically the type of work every small business needs for their web and social networking marketing!

I created a new YouTube commercial for work and I am looking to see what everyone thinks. I wrote the script, shot the video, edited, and color corrected it. We were looking for the extreme cute factor and I think I pulled it off nicely.

An indigenous community needs advice on which Panasonic camera they can buy for their Participatory Video projects.

Panasonic
will be sponsoring their request by giving a discount. But they need to
request the model which will be most suitable for their needs. Could
you please guide us a bit according to the specifics below?

Budget: US$3000 - to get 2 cameras with their accessories. Hopefully the discount will be substantial.

Output
target: acceptable TV quality for local viewing in Malaysia. But does
not have to be high end (naturally, with the budget!).

Editing software: Windows 7, Sony Vegas and Adobe Premier

Shooting
environment: will definitely include some humid places in the forest.
They lost their older Canon HV40 cameras to problems caused by humidity.

I am volunteering for this group. Personally I am carrying a
TM700. I like it, but editing gave me some problems and its full HD
ability actually cost me in terms of weight of several external drives
to carry around with me. They could get that one, but it is now out of
shelves. Perhaps we could use TM900 as the benchmark for any suggestions
you may have.

We got little time before they meet Panasonic, so any prompt responses will be highly appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

The TM700 is (was... sadly replaced by the TM900) a great camera. But like any any tool, knowing it helps you get your best results.

Any camcorder using MPEG style compression (MPEG-2, AVC, etc) will have some limitations you won't have with DV models. Simple put, when you have any interframe compression (one frame dependent on subsequent or previous frames... all MPEG algorithms use this), you will absolutely be able to move the camera fast enough to pretty much destroy your video. Unlike most of the camcorders I have used, the TM700 is at least polite enough to suggest you slow down when you do move the camera too fast.

I have used the TM700 as a "B" camera on quite a few projects (HMC40 is the "A" camera) that went to Blu-ray, internet, and DVD. You will not see the quality of the HD video on DVD... not even close. The TM700 is shooting at full HD resolution, DVD has only 1/6th the spatial resolution.

But you can deliver video that is as good as anything you can put on DVD... and in fact, better than any DV camcorder used for DVD (particularly NTSC DV to NTSC DVD, since DV25 in NTSC is encoded in 4:1:1 color, DVD in 4:2:0 color, so you're actually subsampling color twice on the way from realty to DVD if you use DV in-between).

I've burned several DVDs and have had consistently sharp footage. I'm not even using higher end editing suites at the moment, simply iMovie. The quality is excellent and shows of the footage, camera and HD tv brilliantly.
