Import/Convert Sony SR12 AVCHD Videos export WMV to Sony Vegas Pro 8
Recently I have purchased a Sony HDR-SR12 and Vegas Pro 8 bundle from B&H. When I transferred some HD video, AVCHD to be specifically, to my PC for editing in Vegas 8 Pro I get a "format not supported" error. I just couldn't believe it! If Sony Vegas Pro 8 can not handle 1920*1080 AVCHD videos whey B&H sell the two as a bundle in the first place?
I'm all new to video stuff and editing as well, I just need a simple solution to help me import SR12 AVCHD files to Vegas Pro 8 successfully. I've tried Picture Motion Browser PMB for my editing purpose as someone suggested on some forum, but the software crash so often that I can barely get it to work. From some threads on creativecow, I tried out a program called Aunsoft Final Mate, which is exclusively designed assistant software for HD camcorder users proclaimed by its developer Aunsoft Studio. Honestly speaking, I'm very happy with the result. As far as I can tell, converted videos from Sony SR12 AVCHD 1920*1080 M2TS videos to Sony Vegas WMV(VC-1) format work smoothly on Sony Vegas Pro 8 and there is no degradation of picture quality from naked eyes.

Besides that, Aunsoft Final Mate also allows me to
merge all my AVCHD video clips into one single file on a timeline basis, which have saved lots of time for me.

I recommend this product for people who have similar problems with me about AVCHD importing to Sony Vegas Pro 8. At the same time, try not buy the Sony SR12 and Vegas Pro 8 bundle. Trust me. It's not a happy experience.

I am using Vegas Pro 8.0 with DVD Architect 4.5, if you go to VASST web site and order their training DVD's you will get the information you need. They helped me tremendously. One of them is on sale. I ordered "Getting started with DVD Architect Volume 3" and Vegas Pro 8 "Vegas 8 Update". They also have some free plug ins for Vegas. their web site is (http://www.vasst.com) I added parenthesis.

Customize preview settings by unchecking automatically adjust preview playback settings. I do that so that I can run previews always at full/best. Make sure you are running at least i7 Quadcore processor at minimum 2.8 Ghz. Make sure you have at least 6GB of at least 1033 or 1333 mhz RAM. I recommend 8+ gigs.

Vegas likes processor power and RAM, not so much video card power. Unfortunately for the latter as I bought a $450 AMD Radeon 5870 when it came out hoping it would add mad power to Vegas, but it didn't. Vegas likes processor and RAM power.

Also, make sure you use three hard drives. One for Windows, one for project media, and one for renders. This will speed things up considerably. If you can afford Solid State...get it.

I advise against RAID and favor SSD instead...I heard that for video editing, RAID can actually slow things down as contradictory as that seems...

Yeah. I think that mts files are system hogs. When I edit, I set the preview settings to auto, I disable my internet connection and disable any running functions of norton anti-virus to free up cpu resources. this usually makes editing more bearable. I am running a AMD dual core @ 3.2 ghz on windows xp at 32 bits. So you should see a bigger difference than I do. this should help you.

<p class="post">

When I drop my AVCHD .mts clips from my Canon HF10
camera into Sony Vegas Platinum
(consumer version), and then use the make DVD wizard, it renders and
then sends my media files to DVD architect 4.5 and then burns my DVD to
look spectacular.  This is fantastic because my project I'm working on
is going on
4.7GB DVDs for commercial DVD players or computers. I simply shot in HD
because I wanted the option in the future to burn to Blu-ray, but won't
be doing that as of yet.

I don't want to use Sony Vegas Platinum though....I want more
advanced options and more options later for BluRay, etc etc etc and thus
need to edit, render, send the edited/rendered files to DVD architect
pro 5.0, and then burn to DVD using Sony Vegas Pro, not Platinum.

Sony Vegas Pro does not have this streamlined "make DVD" option like
the nice consumer version does.
After editing in Vegas Pro, I have to manually render my project using
the plethora
of options available, which honestly, I don't know much about. I've
tried rendering using NTSC widescreen for DVD architect (MPEG-2), I've
tried HDV with high settings, etc etc etc and when I drop these rendered
files into DVD Architect, they don't turn out well quality-wise like
they did in Sony Vegas Platinum using the automatic make DVD settings.Â
I
simply want to render these edited .mts files to a format that DVD
architect will like and then burn in high quality so my DVDs look good
on any DVD player with a standard monitor or HD monitor.  Vegas
Platinum
does a great job, but it's unknown to me what it is doing behind the
scenes to render my files before it sends them off to DVD architect.
Obviously it works great given my test with Vegas Platinum and native
.mts files, but I have no idea what Vegas Platinum is doing to convert
or render these editing .mts files to make them still high quality and
smooth for DVD architect.  I just need to know how to replicate this
process manually in Vegas Pro and I'm set.

So to recap, and in a nutshell, I need to know what render settings
to choose in Vegas Pro after editing my .mts files natively so I can
then send them over to DVD architect pro 5.0 and burn my project to a
DVD without loss of visual quality.

Any help greatly appreciated.

You should be able to edit the NTSC (30/60 frames) into PAL (25/50) without a notable difference. Since Sony most likely has less volume in Europe, they like slapping the name "PAL" on, but I've never heard of someone jacking the price up by $3,000 for probably just a slight change in firmware.

yea. you won't be able to watch your finished video on anything. You may be able to edit since a lot of programs can edit PAL and NTSC, but you won't be able to view your video on an external monitor unless you have an NTSC monitor.

thanks XTR-91 for the link and I agree with that 24p is old here.. but i am required to do so by the shoot choreographer.. and the place of shoot is a mountainous area in BHUTAN where even taking a 2 wheeler is a struggle but somehow the eqipment has been dispatched and now only we have to get there and begin..

The TVs in BHUTAN get PAL signal and are primitive 1950s TVs as compared to USA. still well under 17". So as you said, the TVs should convert automatically, I don't think that would be possible given the technology. And one more thing..

If I shoot at anything and rely on automatic conversion then wouldn't the video be faster or slower than usual??

so basically I will have to shoot @24fps 1080p and then use the original footage here. but also release it there in BHUTAN. The main priority is USA so i will shoot in HD (BHUATN doesn't have HD). then convert or do something to make it PAL TV compatible.

What can I do to achieve the expected results?

thanks!

PAL and NTSC are simple standards for video frame rates. NTSC shoots the standard 30 fps frame rate, while PAL is 25 fps. Most United States and European TV sets will most likely convert your video to a compatible frame rate before displaying.

Shooting 24p is better thought of as a down conversion from the standard rates of 30 and 60 frames that camcorders can record in. 24p can be thought of as achieving a special motion affect (e.g. imitating an old time scene), but does not "enrich" the quality to make video look like film. Film has many advantage, such as light sensativity and shallow depths of field. People often get the idea that shooting 24p advances video toward looking like film. Film has its advantages, but proves its worth by the least amount in terms of frame rate. I'd take a look at this article first. My advice is not to shoot at 24 frames unless it's an essential rate that's demanded by your boss.

hi guys, I am a beginner in video. I had a question about PAL and NTSC formats.. I have a project that i will shoot in a region where PAL is used. However, I will need to bring the footage back home and then release it in USA in NTSC format. I will be doing 1080p 24p Native for "cine look"..

Will I need to convert anything?? I believe NO, because I will be recording in 24fps, and that is different from PAL and NTSC. so it should not matter. However, I could be wrong and I have not considered anything except the fps.

Please let me know how to resolve the issue, if it is actually an issue..

Adobe Encore supports 32 subtitle tracks, that means you can add 32 different subtitle languages. Usually, there are two ways to add subtitle: 1) type every word into the "monitor" window, but first thing you should do is to create a new "subtitle track" in the " timeline", and then select " add subtitle" in the "monitor" window, drug the "current-time indicator" to the correct time point, finally type the subtitle words in the " monitor" window.
The second way is more simple. You should create a script text, save as "UTF-8" format. Then right click the blank space of" timeline",select " import subtitles>>text script" to import the text.

I have an AVI file which properties are: 576x432, BitRate:168kpbs, Duration:100mins, 29.97fps, NTSC.

When I try to import it into P.Pro 1.5 into an NTSC session, it will not import, probably because of the unusual frame size?? (dont know for sure).

I am trying ultimatley to produce a PAL Mpeg2 file so I can later auther it in Encore. I use a program called ''ConvertXtoDVD3" which I can succesfully convert the original AVI file to a PAL Vob file.

Then I use a program called 'MagicConverter' to convert the new Vob file to Mpeg2 with :720x576, 25fps.

The resulting Mpeg2 file plays on windows media player, although now it says it's only 16minutes long.

I then create a PAL session in P.Pro 1.5 and import the new Mpeg2 file. It imports fine, however it now says the duration is only 16 minutes even though it should be 100mins. Also if I try to edit it in any way, all the audio comes out of sync and the whole thing seems to play random parts of the video.

Can anyone tell me why this new Mpeg2 file I've converted will not work in P.Pro and the timings and everything is off???? Thanks.

Peachy,

Since I don't use mac's I can't answer that question. You'll have to go with Rob's or another mac user's advice. However, there are software options that can serve as a 'virtual monitor' for those who don't have monitor capabilites. The best one for DV and HDV are the old 'DV Rack' and it's Adobe reincarnation, 'On-location'. Unfortunately, On-location is bundled in with CS4, but it works on mac's. Your other choice is Scope Box which is a stripped down version of On-Location for mac only. Typical of mac software, it's a little pricey at $399, but it looks pretty solid and it's still cheaper than buying a monitor and matching vectorscopes. You can check it out at scopebox.com.

The software solution cuts out the extra steps and allows you to record directly to hard disk and tape simulatneously. Having a software option is a good way to go if you can pony up the cash.

if you are editing DV, you can output the video via firewire to a miniDV deck or a miniDV camcorder. Then connect the NTSC monitor or TV to whatever you connected your firewire to. Then in FCP you need to go to View > Video playback and choose Firewire. Then View > Audio Playback and choose "Audio follows video." This will keep audio in sync with your video, but you need to connect speakers to your deck or camera to monitor the audio too.

Monitors: so, if I can't trust my computer monitor, what do most people connect their mac to for editing? Usually I see two or even three monitors in editing bays, with one a CRT or similar NTSC device.

Peachy,

Yeah, you need an NTSC monitor or straight TV (I suggest a small LCD TV for the budget minded) to see what your output will look like. Your computer shows video in progressive scan (that whole 'P' thing) and your standard scan TV (HD included) shows video in interlaced ('I') frames. As Rob said, your computer will not play back interlaced video without those 'jagged lines' as it is trying to show them in the progressive format.

You only need to use deinterlacing if your final product is going to the web since all computers show their videos in 'p' mode. Even then depending on your NLE, the result won't be perfect and may cause other issues. The most likely reason you're still seeing jagged lines on your DVD's is probably the player and or the set you're watching it on may also progressive scan.

I would have to disagree with Rob about shooting in progressive mode as it does remove the interlacing that occurs during subject movement as the frames are recorded progressively not as overlapped scanned fields. On the otherhand, progressive scan has its own issues with 'motion artifacts' which occur during fast subject movement. The least expensive option is to shoot it was well as you can, use a compatible format monitor and bear in mind your final output format so you can make any necessary adjustments.

If you are judging the quality of your image by looking at your computer screen, you will be making bad judgement calls because computer monitors do not properly display video. You must output video to an NTSC monitor. Do not convert the file to progressive. That is not necessary.

Shooting progressive doesn't help with this situation either, so i dunno where you got that info from. And for future references, definitely do not use the de-interlace filter is FCP. it doesn't de-interlace anything. it just deletes one of the fields of your interlaced video.

Hello,

I have an older Panasonic PG350 Mini-DV camera that shoots NTSC interlaced only. It does not shoot progressive, 24p or HD.

When importing the video, straght lines appear jagged. Converting the file to progressive in Final Cut Express seems to help somewhat, but I can still see the jaggies.

Any idea what I am doing wrong? Am I doing something wrong? Or is it just the limitation of digital on a PC? I have read that most pros prefer to shoot progressive in the field to combat this exact situation. When I make a DVD, played on a standard NTSC TV, the jagged lines are there, but less apparent.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

thanks guys, thats exactly what I am talking about daryldrj

that line of cameras had one recording format, but could playback other format recorded minidv tapes...

This is what my plan is, I have about 30 ntsc recorded minidv tapes, and about 50 pal recorded minidv tapes thru the years starting from some video8 footage I transferred to minidv tape from late 80s.

for transferring the NTSC footage minidv tapes, I will have to get a new ntsc minidv format, not HD format around $200 that I can do.

and also buy a new HD format but this time PAL (moving back to Europe again, and I hear for independent movie shooting people still go with PAL even in the US market)

Do you have any suggestions from new models in around $700 price range?

Ok I have an HDR-FX1 Sony camera it records NTSC but I can put a PAL recorded tape into the camera and it plays and I can download to the computer. I am not sure if this is what you are talking about or not. My Pal camera is a little handheld panasonic that i bought here in Ukraine my FX-1 I bought in the states and it will run both formats.

I'd check eBay for some old analog camcorders. If you're lucky, you will be able to find the exact model and buy one that runs well enough to play back a tape.

While I am aware of the occasional deck that would playback or generate PAL or NTSC, I cannot specifically recall a camera model that did so out of the box. I am sure you are right, but I cannot recall one specifically. Sorry.

I remember owning few Sony's when I had money thru my dad or myself,

One was VX2000, It was NTSC format version, minidv tapes, but could play back both formats, just recorded on NTSC

My dad also had I think TRV-600? which was PAL, and it was a decent minidv cam that could also play both formats

Now I am working on a huge archived minidv tapes for my dad before he turns 65, old man wants me to organize all the tapes.

I am looking for few cameras that I can buy, be it sony, that can playback most of these recordings.

My very important question is, Does minidv camcorders today playback both formats even if records only 1?

or even HDV (minidv ones) I know they can play standard format, but are they inclined to only one TV format?

I would love to hear your suggestions, as these new generation sales-men on B+H Photo and video thinks such capabilities didnt exist with minidv camcorders, they were responding me on the phone like i am some kinda psycho...

I would love to hear your suggestions as my time is running with my search and running out to make my fathers wish come true...
