I have been recently put charge ('inherited') of a local television production company and the problem is I have no idea where to start. I don't know what kind of equipment to replace... for live broadcast or for studio ( Most of the equipment feels like a decade old already) . (mixers, modulators, etc.) Could somebody point me where good resources where I could learn the ropes?

Hello,

I've never done any video before and I want to document a trip I'm going on and also make it like a documentary where I interview people at the event I'm attending. My hope is that I can get the video played the following year at their amateur film festival. My questions are do I have to shoot in HD to be current? Do I need a prosumer camera to acheive my goal or can I use something like a consumer camcorder? This may be a one time project so I'm not terribly worried about getting a camera that will bring me to professional level in the future. Having said that obviously I won't be investing a lot of money in computer/editing hardware. I think my main concerns with this project will be low light situations, sound quality, and my own level of inexperience. Any suggestions for camera/other equipment that would suit this type of project with a complete newbie?

Thanks,

~LAM

Good day to each of you.

I am new at video editing, finally picked up a subscription to VM and then found this forum. WONDERFUL. (Finally a civil on-line community, it's too rare)

While retired very early due to a disability, I've been a film (still) Photographer for a number of years. Never gone digital execpt for quick snaps etc. now for specific reasons, I'm moving to Multi-media, i.e., Still Photographs (Scanned negatives), HD Video via a JVC-10U, 8MM film video processed on transfered onto DVD, Voice-over and Background tracks, i.e., Audio B roll. I sincerely believe that Multimedia is the way to go for any photographer with something to present i.e., story, documentary etc, is a large emerging technology.

I now have a new iMac 27", 3.0Ghz w/1TB internal HD, 2TB external Drive and several 500GB external drives.

I'm very excited about this passion and excited to have found this just awesome community Thanks to VideoMaker.

So, my iMac has just 4Gig of RAM expandable to 16GB. I've getting the vibe from reading this forum that my next step would be to try to upgrade RAM???

Keeping in mind that I've purchased FCP Studio 2 a bit ago, a wonderful USB condenser Mike system.

I'm also learning via web tutorials and plan on buying the VM tutorials if you don't think they are above my head?

One more please, when I can afford it I'll get an external TV but I would like a jog wheel to help. I have MS and less hand and arm work is really a relief for me. So, do I wait and save for a Euphonix Transport or is there something else for me that would be worth it?

Thank you so much.

Tom

Looking for recommendations for a good non professional camcorder to record outdoor automotive "how to" (vehicles will NOT be running) and install videos and post them online. Should I worry about a wireless microphone or is there a camcorder out there that has good sound quality built in. If I do need a wireless mic, how do I know if the camcorder I get can support it? I am not a video editor, just a guy who wants to download some helpful, good quality videos to youtube.

Cost is an issue as my business is on a shoestring budget.

Hello,

Yes, I'm a newbie! I have a Canon Vixia HF10 camera that I've shot a ton of home video with and edited in Premiere. So far, so good.

I have a friend that is an Elvis tribute artist and I tried filming his show a few weeks ago at a club. I had some problems! I've watched a ton of tutorials on how to set up the camera, but I'm still a bit confused! I have a few questions...

Focus: I manually focused on him on stage, but couldn't get it "sharp". The autofocus seemed to do better, but lost it when the lights went on and off. What am I doing wrong? What happens if I take focus of him while on stage, but then he walks the crowd towards me... do I lose the focus?

What is the best way to set up the camera for this type of setting?

Thanks for your help!

Hello - Newbie question here: does anyone know if I can connect a small screen/monitor to my dcr-vx1000 (since it does not have an lcd screen)? Also, if I am able to connect a monitor, will I also be able to connect a microphone (at the same time)? Yes, I know the vx1000 is quite old, but this one must have been bought and then stored away, it's actually barely used.

Thanks!

Hi, I intend to shoot an instructional video staring myself and an associate. I will edit the footage myself, and create the final product. The video will be shot indoors and outdoors and focus on do-it-yourself home improvment issues. Consumers will purchase the video and either download it online or recieve a dvd in the mail. I don't want to rent, so I will buy a camera and a mic. My budget for the camera is about $700.
Question #1 - should I buy an SD or HD camera? Will HD footage need to be converted to SD in order for consumers to view it as a download or dvd? Is it difficult to convert HD to SD?
Question #2 - Do I edit once it is in SD format? Regardless, what software should I use?
Question #3 - I need voiceover (or dubbing - not sure of the correct term here) as well as live sound. How do I do this? Will this complicate the conversion to SD? Will it complicate the editing process?
Question #4 - Should my file be an mpeg format, or something different? What is the most popular format? Should I care at this point?
Seeing that I am a newbie, I want to buy a camera that will make this whole process as simple as possible. Thanks.

Hello, my name is Tammi and I got into this by a few years ago when were moving from Fl to Tn, and I had 18 years of home movies to put on dvd. So I was going to take them to wal-greens, but it was very expensive. I had movies on vhs, vhs-C, little dvd's and dv, wow, so I bought a dvd burner to hook up to the tv, when they first came out, and realized the videos were still going to suck. So I had a dell laptop, used Muvee and started editing all those years of incredibly boring home movies. Muvee got boring, So I used Ulead, Adobe Elements and my favorite is pinnacle studio. So, since I was enjoying all the editing, I started giving away gift dvd's of sporting things I taped, and then people really liked them, so I started to get hired to do cheer comp, recitals, etc. My real dream is horse shows, I have had my farm for the past 12 years, and now getting a divorce, and would like to travel around to the horse shows and I guess, video on spec. I thought of a name Unbridled Videography. I also would like to do school events, I have no interest in weddings.

So enough about my history, The only camera I have is a sony hdr sr12, just a small one. I would like to look more professional, what would be a good starting camera and accessories, I would also like to do the instant dvd's at shows, any info you would have for a newbie would be great!!Â

Does anyone use casablanca systems or applied magic?Â

 Thanks so much

so, I've made a few of my own animated shorts, and some weird silly comedies with my friends, but i wanna step up. If I'm going to make a career out of this (I'm still in college) I'm going to need to get a little more serious. The problem is, no one else that I know seems to take any of this seriously, they buy all the gear but when we go out to make something, the guys end up just taking the camera off the tripod and run around screaming. Now as much as that's funny it's not gonna get any of us any better at movie making.

So I want to make my own short, probably comedy, direct and edit it myself. But how do I start getting a crew of people together who are dedicated, and want to do things at least a bit properly?

Is there a website/forum for this kind of thing?
oh yeah, Im in the UK by the way.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am a complete newbie to the world of video making, but I want to get my hands dirty. I'm looking to buy a camcorder under $1,000 that will meet my needs.

Basically, I'd buy a cheap video camera and just start making movies - but I can't see the point. I might make this amazing video which will be totally worthless because of the poor video quality. So, that's what I'm going for. I want really good video quality, but I don't need all sorts of extra features.

What I'm leaning towards right now is the Canon Vixia HF10, from the reviews I've read it's pretty solid. It can record in high-definition and seems pretty simple to use. The bad manual focus seems like a big downfall though, but the fact that it uses flash memory (from what little I know) seems to be pretty nice.

Can you all try and give me a direction in what I should go with? I know nothing about camcorders, so keep the terminology simple if you could.

I found this website by accident, but it might be useful for newbies to learn production techniques.

http://backstage101.learningcenter.sony.us/index.jsp

Basically, it's an online learning site where you register for classes, taught by pros. I'm not sure whether you have to pay or not. There's not many people over there now, but could be extremely popular soon. The forums are pretty quiet, and I told the instructor that I'd mention his site over here in these forums to help generate interest. The classes seem very basic, so probably not for video know-it-alls. Sponsored by Sony.

Note: I get no money if you go to this site. I'm not an advertiser, just a messenger on my own time.

Great forum everyone! There's a TON of knowledge here. Nice job.Â

I looked briefly but did not find a topic here for me, the newbie. Please post a link if my questions are already answered somewhere else.

I'd like to build an amateur production studio. Projects will be sport videos, 30 second ads for my employer, skits, and family video. Distribution will be HD-DVDs with menus, and clips for the web. I'd like to have a lot of tools for effects, titles, and DVD authoring.

I know this is ambitious, especially for someone who has only used SD video with Microsoft Movie Maker. I need an education.

So... considering my goals, please shoot down this plan:

I got a screaming deal on a Sony HDR-HC5: $467 (demo model w/ warranty).  The major drawbacks to the HC5 are, 1.) no 24p, and b.) no mic input.  I know the HC5 is a "point & shoot" consumer camera, but will it limit me now, while I'm just getting my feet wet? Is there something very lacking about it's manual capabilities? Should I return it?

I intend to get a Marantz PMD660 for audio. Will this do for a while? (I'd like to avoid a product that I will outgrow quickly)

I have NO idea what software to learn for post-production. Ideally I would like something affordable that has professional upgrade potential, instead of something that is easy to use but has limited capability.

I'd like to limit my initial investment to $2000 including lights, mics, lenses and duct tape.

Thanks in advance!

 _Sherman

 P.S. I have a Gateway PC, Windows XP, Dual-Core, 1GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive.

Forgive me for being a newbie.

Introduction. I am a prospective director, producer, editor and cinematographer (videography) who plans to film and edit a feature length documentary and all I need is a sizable capital to make it happen.

I have completed the 42-minute documentary short derived from YouTube under fair use (political footages, etc in conjunction with filmed speeches i.e. Malcolm X, historical facts and quotations) as a demonstration of my amateur filmmaking talent using (you may laugh) Windows Movie Maker.

I have already sent the short burned on DVD-R to Artivist Film Festival and am awaiting acknowledgment of reception. I also sent the DVD-R copies to a main Internet-based composer who provided royalty-free music and sent him a royalty check in amount of $65 under fair licensing agreement laid out at his web site and to an author of underground non-fiction best-sellers. The latter, if he responds favorably to the short, might hook me up with the financiers who might provide what is termed "angel capital" needed to fund the production budget. That's the purpose of the short.

Anyway, here's the question & detail that I think will get me started provided I take college classes (multimedia lab) and teach myself perusing the books on how to use the programs in step by step process.

____________________

What's the list of softwares and hardwares needed to form a new production studio? Add if necessary, I'd like to know what specialty softwares used by professional video editors to edit and develop visual fx shots.

The basic I came up with for production from development to pre to shooting to post to marketing are as follows:

Power Mac 8-core with mid or high-end video card & at least 8 gigabits of RAM modules

WD MyBook 2 TB External HD

Final Cut Pro Studio 2

Audio Logic 8

Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium

FileMaker Bento (track production, tasks & contacts)

Gorilla Film Production Software (track payroll, budget & submit info on 1,200+ film festivals)

Final Draft or Movie Magic Screenwriter

Optional - Autodesk Maya, Pixar Renderman, Apple Shake and/or Nuke

Of course, the above list will cost me up to 10k as the starting point. I know it seems like jumping into the pond, to use the expression.

And I would opt to rent high-end video and sound equipment. It's a common knowledge Panavision do not sell the movie cameras, only rental for as much as 3,000 a day depending on model, configuration and with camera technician on hand. I would film in HD digital and sometimes 35mm traditional film stock (Kodak).

EDIT: I bought the following books at B&N -
