Since you specified cheap, I'll recommend the DXG-595v. You can order it through Walmart for under $200. That way if there's something wrong with it you can just return it.

They are also available from B&H for about the same price. It will digest just about any SDHC card though the factory only rates it up to cards with a capacity of 8GB.

As far as performance, don't expect it to be a Canon or a Sony, but the images are pretty clear and it shoots 1080 at 30 progressive (720 at 60 progressive).

It outputs files to .MOV format that's easily recognizable by most NLEs, I use Magix 14+ and am able to mix and match footage from all my cameras with no trouble at all.Â

I got one to shoot cleaner keys against a greenscreen as a supplement to my standard def Canon cameras and have actually started using the DXG to shoot everything.

Like most cheapy cams there's no mic input but I record everything to a separate source anyway, so it's not been an issue.

DXG doesn't have the world beating reputation of some of the other companies, but to give you an example of what it can do, I used it to shoot a short feature and got second runner up in the local film festival. I never let on that I was using a cheap cam like that, but there was a lot of satisfaction in beating out all the FX7s and XHA1s that the other entrants were banging on about.

One last pitch for the 595v, I managed to drop it off the tripod (never trust the "click" when locking the plate) and it fell about 5 feet to a concrete floor. Still works just fine.

Yeah. I have already found a couple DVX100's for around 1800, and I would definitely be looking into new lens' as well. Thanks for your feedback.

Yea, the DVX100 is a real good camera. You could probably find a used DVX100B around your price range. When you get some more money, look into getting a 35mm lens adapter for that camera too, like the SGPro or the Letus35. They give your image a shallower depth of field resulting in a more "film" look.Â

Hi to all the film makers and entrepenuers in the film industry. I myself am a small time film maker, and moving to the United States from Bolivia, I started all over, to try and direct and produce my own ideas. All I have now is a small handycam, and am looking to buy a much better camera. My budget is low for now, but I am looking at around $2,000. I have been told that the Panasonic DVX100 is a great camera for someone on that budget. Could anyone please let me know what their thoughts are. Thanks so much. The majority of my work is documentaries or short films. Very artistic and poetic, I tend to stick to alternate angles and different graphics for my films. Please let me know what your proffesional opinions are. Thank you so much,

Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade to the HD market so that means upgrading my camera. I'm looking at Sony right now. A friend of mine has the V1U I believe but I need something that has the low-light abilities of Sony's PD170 without the issues of the CMOS sensory issues I've been hearing about. I'm a film student/videographer, currently doing weddings and training videos, so something that can produce beautiful pictures, can do SD or HD, has low light abilities, and is hearty is what I'm looking for.

Any suggestions? Should I be looking at different cameras? Any advice you guys have is MUCH appreciated!!! :)
