Dont know if this is the right place for this but I use a Canon XH-A1 to film wildlife in East Africa. Is there anywhere I can go for some free info on wildlife filming? I can go all over the web for info about lighting ect but shooting nature is much different. The actors seemingly never preform right and there are shadows on the main subject and a bush is in the way and the list could go on! I am on a really tight budget just trying to make a couple bucks thru stock footage sales. So far no go. Thanks, mfish

Here is my latest 3D video, sort of a musical montage with some effects provided by the latest version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD. I used an Easy3D camera (aka Rollei aka 3DinLife 820) that I got for $76 (US dollars) from Think Geek a couple of months ago. Questions and comments are welcome, I hope you enjoy the video :)

Hi, this is my first video compilation, shared here (also my first post). Looking for any constructive criticism. Videos shot on Canon 5d Mk II and GoPro HD Hero. I know, there is lot of things to do with postproduction and editing (this is just simple cuts), but my concern is atm more on videos itself. Also I'm planning to get dolly soon, so now its just static videos, I hope I'll improve that soon. Thanks for wiewing and especially commenting :)

Here is the latest stereoscopic 3D video I put up on YouTube. It's a montage of some still I took @ the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden in Springfield Missouri USA. The camera was a Sony 3D Bloggie and the video was edited with Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus HD. Questions & comments are welcome (you will probably get a faster response if you ask on YouTube) Have fun watching ;)

jbetz on "HD vs SD for wildlife/short films"

I am looking to purchase a camcorder, and I am wondering what others think about the HD vs SD dilemma, especially with regards to wildlife subjects. I am an aspiring wildlife filmmaker and so far have shot all of my footage in HD (on a Sony FX1 and Canon XHA1). I am happy with the quality of the footage I shot on these cameras, but for wildlife filming longer lenses would obviously be a benefit. Here is a link to my showreel if you would like to see some of my footage: EXAMPLE FOOTAGE. Since I just graduated from college and those cameras belonged to my school, I now find myself without a camera.

I have done a lot of reading on choosing cameras in books and on forums, and I believe I have a pretty good handle on the costs and benefits of both HD and SD for wildlife, and in general. I know that interchangeable lenses are often considered a necessity for wildlife work, and as I have a knowledge of lenses and multi-lens setups I feel that I am ready to handle this type of setup. I know it adds a lot of cost, weight, etc, but again, for wildlife it seems like more of a necessity than perhaps in other film genres. Because of this I have been considering the Canon XL2.

On the other hand, I know that the wildlife film industry, and all video in general, is quickly transitioning to HD. I love the quality and resolution I was able to obtain using the FX1 and XHA1, but I just didn't get the magnification I need to film many subjects. While I could get close enough to woodchucks (within 10ft) to get decent close-ups, I can't get this close to a fox, deer, bear, etc. I am working on a budget, and so I can't afford something like the Canon XLH1 at this point, and so any HD camera I purchase would not offer interchangeable lenses.

At this point my main goal is NOT to produce lots of footage to sell to anyone, but to improve my reel with effective sequences of behavior so that I can show that I am able to shoot for sequence-editing and will subsequently be noticed by producers.

Is a camera like the XL2 good enough for this purpose? Or do I absolutely NEED HD footage in order to compete in today's HD world, even in terms of my showreel? Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a stereoscopic photo montage I made, the photos were taken in the summer of 2010 with an Aiptek i2 3D camcorder. The video was put together with Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus HD, it has great support for stereoscopic video production. http://youtu.be/UsC6PxAwKNI?hd=1

I have the fortunate opporunity and experience to be able to pursue and get footage of a wide variety of African Mammals/Birds/Insects/Reptiles/Amphibians/Plants etc.

Is there a market for the 'out-of-the-ordinary' animal scenes, like Bushpig, Aardvark, endangered Karkloof Blue Butterfly, Narina Trogon etc? or is it just the big and nasties like Elephant/Buffalo/Lion/Rhino etc that sell?? Is it worthwhile to pursue???

If so, what formats are recommended? What do you guys think?

Hi everyone,

I am an amateur working on a short film about hemlock trees. A major problem I'm facing is that my subjects are predominantly non-moving and it is huge challenge to shoot captivating video. I've thought about including certain shots, such as flowing streams, insects and birds to liven it up. I could also zoom in on dew on leaves, mist circling the trees or branches swaying when the wind blows. I also had an idea about shooting silhouettes and shadows, but it is rather difficult to do so in the forest.
I'm looking for some advice on the kind of frame composition, camera movement (like pans, tilts, zooms) and lighting (lenses, time of day etc) that will improve my cinematography. Perhaps someone could also point me to an example of a successful arboreal video? Thank you for your help.

I would like to do field recordings of nature sounds here in Florida (birds, frogs, etc.) The conditions can be hot and humid, and I need to work at night.

What types of mikes and recorders would you recommend?

I like the idea of the zoom H4n with phantom powered shotguns, but should I also consider a high end stereo mic for ambient?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am interested in pursuing a career in wildlife cinematography, but I am currently unable to purchase my own equipment. I have access to a Sony HDRFX1, but for filming wildlife, I really need larger than a 12x zoom. Since I don't really have any other choice, I am considering shelling out some money for a teleconverter lens that screws on to the front of the FX1. I know that these converter lenses are not ideal, but I don't have interchangeable lenses and I think I might still benefit from one of these.

I am wondering if anyone has had experience using teleconverters, especially on HD cameras. If there are downsides, especially to cheap conversion lenses, what are they and how will I see these disadvantages in my footage? Here are links to the two I have been considering. Obviously there is a big price difference. I can probably only afford the cheaper one myself, but may be able to get some money from elsewhere to purchase something more expensive.
