It still is not clear about royalty free music. If I pay and download some royalty free music, can I attach the music and post on YouTube? What if I attach the music to a video and burn it to a DVD for someone. Do they then "own" the music and can they upload to YouTube? I just don't want anyone to suffer a lawsuit.

Hello -

This is my first post here. Thought I'd make my first topic about something I (kind of) know about, film composition. First, a bit about me with regards to video. I'm a full-time ICU/CCU nurse. In other words, my knowledge base to videography is "basic" at best. LOL! However, I do a fair amount of video-taping for the hospital where I work. I'm a kind soul and video-tape educational in-services so that employees who are not able to attend the actual in-service can at least see it on DVD. For the past few years, I've been doing a LOT of this. It is through this particular video-taping/editing that I've been learning about the craft of videography (very much a self-learner). (Keep in mind that when I learned "Film Composition", there was no computer-based audio/video editing ANYTHING. LOL! I "Cut and Paste" by literally cutting the 1/4" reel-to-reel audio tape and (literally) taping the spliced ends together. All of this was done on top of a flat-bed movieola. LOL! I also learned how to use an upright movieola! LOL!)

My favorite part video-editing process of the taped educational in-services is composing music to the video. I never thought that I would end up composing music video. . . . using a computer. LOL! But it is a wonderful creative outlet for me.

I use Apple's Logic Pro (9.1.6) for the main DAW software with lots of instrumental libraries including GPO, JABB, Kirk Hunter Studio libraries, guitar libraries from Music Lab, and many others as well. All seems to work well together.

I am thinking about branching out and lending myself to film students (students in high school or college) who might want original music for their films (videos). I'm thinking that it could become a nice (and serious) hobby. And, should enough work come my way, I would be willing to take on other video-scoring projects to that could turn into (at least) supplemental income.

I never pursued Film Composition as a career. And, I do love my nursing profession. At present, I'm kind of able to do both with my hospital-work related video projects. It would be nice to do more of the film-composing stuff.

So. . . . who here does film composition, either professionally, semi-professional or as a hobbyist?? How did you get started? Please share your experience with film composition.

Thank you. . . :)

Ted

I have a client that desires to have copyrighted music in the video content that I shoot and edit for her. I try out music in Garageband and other methods of free music but I know she wants certain songs to go along with the videos she imagines.

Although I am getting paid by her to do these videos, they are only going on her YouTube and YouTube usually recognizes the song and (to make things fair) puts an add for the particular song below the video. She knows this and is still fine with using copyrighted music.

With that said, is the fact that YouTube allows viewers to buy the song enough to say that I'm good with copyright infringement? I am making profit but the writer/artist might be making profit too.

Please help!

There are so many providers of RF music out there, but does anyone know
of any providers with actual cool music? Some qualifiers...

1. Doesnt sound straight out some kid's synethesizing software (ie actually sounds produced)
2. Doesn't sound like it's from the 80's (or 90's for that matter) but sounds modern and cool
3. Doesn't cost rediculous amounts of money.
4. Actually has music that you can legitimitely use in a myriad of
corporate productions (ie its great to have these hard core cinematic
hollywood scores...but often they just sound dumb in a corporate
production). I need stuff I can use often in corporate videos, that just
sounds modern / slick.

I've had some success with some nice tracks from http://www.premiumbeat.com
- but they just dont have the largest range. What is there seems to be
good, but I feel like I have exhausted my options... I've requested
client access to killertracks.com - but they dont post the costs on
their site, and I have a feeling they are crazy expensive...

Are there any gems out there that I am not aware of?? I'd love to hear about it.

I am a beginner lyricist and guitarist. I want to pursue song writing, not performing. I'd like to buy a cam that allows me to share the music I've written, and video blog as well. I've looked at the flip video ultra, as it's been recommended for video blogging. What do you think about this cam for recording my songs as well? Do I need a microphone?

Last year I wrote an article for VM Magazine about 'Making Music Videos'. One of the things stressed in the article was to keep your mind open to the possibilities of what can be done during production and in post-production which can enhance your work. Here's a classic example of how even after shooting a beautiful rendition of Johnny Cash's final music video "Hurt", the editor was able to push that performance into an emotionally stunning piece of art.

Hi Kids -

Stock20 is giving away five royalty-free music selections (one at a time). The first one has 10 versions, with 30 sec, 60 sec and various other timings. You will need to register (free) and the EULA is very readable and easy to follow (plus they have some good info on the use of cue sheets and even provide a blank PDF of one along with a sample and instructions of how to fill it out).

I've been doing video production gigs here and there, working as a sole proprietor under just my name, and I've been thinking of forming a single-member LLC instead, so that I can take out business loans, have limited liability, etc.

I also produce music (which I'd like to publish online soon), do audiovisual work for events, and design graphics for T-shirts and other items, all as a sole proprietor under my own name.

Is it possible or advisable to form a single LLC that would include all of these services?

Would I be better off forming separate LLCs for my various services?

Do I need to have an entire band's signatures, or can just one person from a band sign off to give permission to use their music in a video? Will it change if the band no longer is together also?

No sign-up required. Just browse the music, find what you like, pay (through paypal), and download.

No questions asked. No "would you like to be part of our mailing list?"

I assume if you like the music, you'll be back.

This is a small site run by one composer: me. Selection is admittedly small at the moment,
but the whole idea behind the site is to make it as hassle-free to
license music as possible. Prices are affordable, within $18-$30 range.

I don't like hassles any more than you do. Song are sold as 320 kbps mp3 files. I assume you know how to convert mp3s into wavs, if your video software requires it, and edit music lengths to suit your needs. If you don't know how, I assume you're smart enough to google it and find out how.

Today is May 20th, 2010. To anyone reading this many moons from now, who knows if the site will change, but this is my policy at the moment.

Best of luck in all your endeavours!

Hello again friends!

In Studio 14 HD, whenever I try to edit an individual clip (say, decrease the time duration of it) the music I added to the music tab also decreases...which messes up the overall performance. How do I disable this VERY annoying feature?

EDIT: Nevermind, I am an idiot...there is a locking mechanism right next to the tab. Sorry for this post.

Hello, my name is Clemente and I got to say Videomaker's forums are the best... congratulations!

Ok, this time I have an audio issue regarding rights for music in a TV program.

The thing is that I want to include background music from local musicians in it but, as far as I know, they don't create their own music, they sing covers from different composers.

I don't know if I could get in trouble including their music (even though I have their authorization) and, if I do, would they have to compose their own music so I could include them?

Oops, and one more thing... Asumming they say a song is of their own creation and it is not... How can I protect myself?

Thanks for your help and keep up the good work guys.

Hey all! Just curious how many filmmakers here are composers as well. (And I don't mean people who put loops together in GarageBand!) I mean those who know music theory, and compose, write, and/or perform. I thoght a thread on this topic would be interesting as indie filmmakers are always seeking cheap royalty-free music. Here are a few samples of my most recent scores. Everyone feel free to post their work!
