I am really new to all of this and so may not use the correct word to describe my problem.

When I try to make a video in Premier 9.0 I can transfer the video from my iphone (*.mov files) but when I play them I can hear the audio but not see the video. Why not?

The file size depends on the codec you are using to compress your video. When exporting to mov, the default codec is animation, and yes your video file will be huge.

Try exporting as MP4 and use the H.264 codec. This is a universal codec that both PC and Mac can play just fine.

On ubuntu the best editor is Cinelerra, its the best option for the ubuntu O/S. Its an advanced editor. A more basic editor for ubuntu is Kdenlive, which is good too. I recommend you get a windows or apple O/S and use for editing. Linux just doesn't have any really good editing software yet. Most of the avaliable editors crash, have no people that use them that can help you, and just can't compare to windows and/or apples editoring software.

Hey there Albert,

I have looked long and hard to find video software for Linux that was mature enough to use for professional video production. You don't say what type of software you are looking for, but here's my two cents worth. As a video editor/compositor; Cinelerra is a powerful professional tool, yet it is hard to install properly, and even then all features may not work well or at all on Ubuntu. It does have the advantage of using the Cinelerra authored Quicktime4Linux library which works well on .mov files with lots of codec support. I have used it professionally but with much anguish. Lots of tutorials (no matter what your experience level, go through the beginners tuts as they provide much needed info) and there is at least one repository which has a Debian package and several Ubuntu packages if you look in the Ubuntu forum. I found the best way was to compile my own, it worked better on my PC. Lots of tutorials both video and otherwise on the web.

Kino will import and export .mov files but will not give you much use other than straight cut editing and some very standard looking wipes, plus a few simple effects. It can be a little confusing on how to use it but at least try it out. When I was working in Linux I used it mainly to capture and to convert files from one format to another. There are some tutorials if you think it's good enough for the use you're putting it to.

Blender has some new editing features if you have the fortitude to go through the learning curve, but the editing feature is rather immature just yet, and a little harder to use than say Premiere. The compositing features available to you in Blender are enormous, but again that annoying learning curve.

Everything else I've used on Linux in the past has had the misfortune of being Windows Movie Maker quality, and perhaps more immature than that.

Give these a try, you may find what you're looking for. Hope this helped.

.mov is the extension for a Quicktime file. To produce that the following steps should help.

step 1: Choose File>Export>Media

step 2: In the Export Settings dialog box chose Quicktime from the Format pull-down menu at the top of the dialog box.

step 3: Click on the Video tab at the bottom of the dialog box. In the Codec pull-down menu choose h.264.

That should give you the format/codec that you need.

Most of the time I export to FLV/FL4V in PP-CS4 and that works pretty well. Even so there are so many options in the preset category that I keep trying different ones. I upload to TubeMogul.com that does some transcoding and crossposting to a variety of server sites, so I don't need to worry much about the specifics.

But - I'm not really happy with the quality of the viewing on some of the sites.

Question 1 - is there a preferred/best Format/Preset for Youtube HD?

Question 2 - I've been asked to provide H.264 with .MOV container. I can't seem to find an option for .MOV output. There are several iPod output presets, but nothing that creates a .MOV file. They all create .mp4 extensions.

Confused....

Hi there. I'm using Premiere Pro v7.0
I've taken a few clips that are .mov files. In quicktime the videos look beautiful and display at full frame rate. However, in Premiere, instead of displaying or saving at the correct frame rate of 29.97, it thinks the frame rate is 2.99 fps. The strange thing is is that the duration of the video is correct, so if I try to manually adjust the frame rate with the 'Interpret Footage' it shortens the duration of the clip proportionally. Another odd thing is that Premiere shows the video track frame rate to be 29.97 in the clip properties but then assigns a frame rate of 2.99 for the whole thing. Here's what it shows for one of them:

Type: QuickTime Movie
File Size: 151.08MB
Image Size: 848x480

Pixel Depth: 24
Frame Rate: 2.99
Audio 44100 Hz - 16 bit - Mono
Total Duration: 00;04;08;15
Average Date Rate: 622.55KB / second
Pixel Aspect Ration: 1.000

Quick Time Details:
Move contains 1 video track(s), 1 audio track(s) and 0 timecode track(s)

Video:
This movie appears to have DROPPED FRAMES.
There is 1 frame with a duration of 64/2997ths.
There are 7449 frames with a duration of 1/29.97th.

Video track 1:
Duration is 00;04;08;15
Average frame rate is 29.97 fps

Video track 1 contains 1 type(s) of video data:

Video data block #1:
Frame size = 848 x 480
Compressor =
Quality = Least (1.00)

Does anyone have a fix for this? Thanks!

The reason AVI is is so popular is that whenit is compressed, it is done by intra-frame compression. The compression is limited to individual frames. MPG2 (in fact all MPG formats) compress across several frames, called a GOP. Compression across several frames can cause problems during editing because many of the frames are compressed by looking back at previous frames. So any individual frame is not likely to contain all the data to make the frame. This is the complaint many folks have about the AVCHD formats. Panasonic has developed an AVCHD format that uses only intra-frame (versus the usual inter-frame) compression. However, the bit rate & file size require special high speed and high capacity flash media.

As mentioned earlier, MOV files are a bit different as the format can adjust to a variety of bit rates with quality ranging from as good as AVI to less than MPG4 files.  The easiest way to compare formats is to compare their bit rates. The higher the bit rate, the better the video's quality. However, you may not always want or need the highest bit rates possible. For example, the MPG2 files that make up a DVD video are significantly compressed when compared to AVI's (and high quality MOV's) but it would be hard for you (or even me) to actually see the difference. So while I always archive the highest quality video from the production, I will distribute in a format appropiate to the audience. So I keep the best quality video available for future projects or re-edits for higher quality playback devices.

I don't know if I've added anything helpful to the thread, but thanks for reading. And good luck with your productions.

I edit on a MAC. ALL formats encoded in FCP are encoded in MOV format. They are all compressed at different ratios. Basically the MOV is just a container, just like AVI.

AVI seems to be the most popular format for containers.

MPEG and WMV are very very difficult to edit cleanly because of the amount of compression even on the best setting.

@Craderscott

Actually this is a common misconception, it isn't the format that that determines whether you have compression or not. The amount or lack of compression is a matter of which codec is used at the time of the files creation. There are compressed AVI and MOV files and there are uncompressed AVI and MOV files.

The best for what? What do you want to use the video for? How is it being deployed? Web? Blu-ray? Something else?

In general each file format, and codec have there specific strengths and weaknesses.

MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4, WMA are all compressed. I believe MOV is compressed too, AVI is uncompressed and the best format to save in if there will be editing done later or if new copies will be made

I just got an everio 155 from my wife for Christmas (a bit early). I've noticed this .MOD and wondered what it was. Any way, if you are using iMovie on a MAC, just create a new project in iMovie and import your clips as you normally would. Then save the project and quit iMovie. Now go to the iMovie file and right click or control+click. This will bring up a menu that you could select "Show Package Contents." When you show the package contents, you will get a folder called "Media". Open this folder and you will find .dv files that can be opened in QT. In theroy, you should be able to copy the media folder to your desktop or wherever, and be able to edit the .dv files. The only problem I've noticed so far is that these are uncompressed files, so they could be rather big. Besides that every thing seems to work just fine.

This problem is slowly being cracked. I have valuable stuff that I can process but as you can see from the forums it's no easy task.

JVC .MOD files straight from JVC Everio are changed by well known file extension trick and as pointed out these do not have all necessary file atributes to be further processed especially by Premiere but they do for Flash 8 Pro. and .flv files are straightforward to make from converted .MOD to .mpg files.

To edit the trick is to import the .mpg files into Premiere6 & 6+ but NOT TO PLAY THEM then drag to Time line and Export Timeline as Quicktime format and fully editable .mov files can be re-imported for any editing process you need.

When I am fully satisfied and have documented procedure I'll post it If any one is interesed
