The TM700 is (was... sadly replaced by the TM900) a great camera. But like any any tool, knowing it helps you get your best results.

Any camcorder using MPEG style compression (MPEG-2, AVC, etc) will have some limitations you won't have with DV models. Simple put, when you have any interframe compression (one frame dependent on subsequent or previous frames... all MPEG algorithms use this), you will absolutely be able to move the camera fast enough to pretty much destroy your video. Unlike most of the camcorders I have used, the TM700 is at least polite enough to suggest you slow down when you do move the camera too fast.

I have used the TM700 as a "B" camera on quite a few projects (HMC40 is the "A" camera) that went to Blu-ray, internet, and DVD. You will not see the quality of the HD video on DVD... not even close. The TM700 is shooting at full HD resolution, DVD has only 1/6th the spatial resolution.

But you can deliver video that is as good as anything you can put on DVD... and in fact, better than any DV camcorder used for DVD (particularly NTSC DV to NTSC DVD, since DV25 in NTSC is encoded in 4:1:1 color, DVD in 4:2:0 color, so you're actually subsampling color twice on the way from realty to DVD if you use DV in-between).

I've burned several DVDs and have had consistently sharp footage. I'm not even using higher end editing suites at the moment, simply iMovie. The quality is excellent and shows of the footage, camera and HD tv brilliantly.

I recently purchased a Panasonic TM700 after reading all the positive reviews.

My question is after recording high definition video that looks great on your computer and also looks great playing directly from you camcorder to your television. Have you beenable to burn a DVD that has that same clean crisp image? I know that blu-ray would maintainhigher quality. But have you had success burning DVDs that play on standard players withoutgetting soft rather than crisp images?

I edited some clips in Premiere Pro CS4 on my little MAC and exported it out to a quicktime .mov file.
I tried burning one yesterday ... the footage looks good until it is burned to DVDwhen a obvious loss of sharpness is evident. It doesn't look terrible, but it is not near as good as the original footage.
Have you had to deal with this yet? And if so, do you have an answer for it yet?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Nice to hear. I bought the Panasonic HDC-TM700 and not once just cringed at the quality of footage recorded. Maybe the white balance was off at times, but I've never just looked at it and cringed.

p.s. set the exposure to -3.

I just got back from Ethiopia. Took the HDC-HS700, only difference being records to hard disk instead of flash. Shot a lot of footage while travelling (buses, cars, boats and planes) at speeds of upto 80 km/h (50 mph). Watching on 50" HD tv hasn't shown any artifact that I can see. One work colleague is so impressed with the quality for a "consumer" camera that he's now looking at the TM700.

I've been looking at the Panasonic HDC-TM700 camcorder. I've heard one thing about it is that it showed artifacting (mostly in motion). In terms of professional work, how bad is it?

Could someone who's used this camcorder point me in the right direction?

Does it add more artifacts than I'm trying to take out in post edits (like this one)? Trailing?

Hi Flap400,

Not sure if this will help but for my last video I used Open Office (free) to make a slide presentation.(make your grid)

Jing screen capture (free but I upgraded for 14.95/yr to save my screen capture video as a mp4)

Loaded the mp4 screen capture vid into vegas 9 ( you may want to upgrade that vegas 4, no malice intended, just sayn)

Edited with vegas 9 adding voice over, sound, wipes, ( generated media ) came out nice.

My company is a startup, so we are bootstrapping big time. Check the video at our homepage at http://wap-it.com

Since you already own vegas 4, open office is free, and jing is free, you should be able to produce a decent video for a very low cost.

Blender would fill that need quite nicely. It's free, so the price point you're after is covered. Unfortunately, the learning curve is a little steep. But if you're willing to invest some time and ask around in the user support forums, I'm sure you'll be very pleased with the results.

You can get Blender from http://www.blender.org

How do I create a "grid" (similar to sport grids showing how teams pair up and advance to the final) with individual lines (and team names / photos) 'flying' in from (stage) left and / or right as they advance.

Someone suggested "Photoshop" but that would be much to expensive and a steep learning curve. I'm (still) with XP on Vegas 4.

Any suggestions for 'simple' software and supportive literature for newbies ?

Hi -

I sell clips on Pond5 - My HD clips are $10 each or less.

I also own several Digital Juice HD basketball animations (along with about 350 of their other offerings) and don't see any text, English or otherwise, anywhere on them. Plus if you're not doing HD, their software will render out both NTSC and PAL resolutions. They probably have the best international value out there.

I see the value of having customizable clips but still don't get your pricing.

Yes, compared to some stock houses out there you are competitive - but only the high priced ones. Perhaps you might consider a more varied pricing model.

How does your product line differentiate itself from the likes of Digital Juice, Digital Hotcakes, MotionLoops, etc... where they have similar products for far less money ($49 for one simple 30 second motion graphic seems a bit steep to me in the current market).

For example, you have one basketball clip for $49 (http://www.editableclips.com/video/6606.html) while Digital Juice has Editors Themekits ($50 each or four for $100) which have four motion backgrounds, three overlays, a lower third, two animated wipes, one high res PSD graphic and mattes for the overlays & lower third - All basketball related (http://www.digitaljuice.com/products/products.asp?pid=1064) all in both HD and SD.

Please don't think I am demeaning your product - The graphics look quite nice. I am just trying to understand your pricing model.

"Also, I think this could be it's own industry too. Before the iPad was
released, everyone was predicting that it will revolutionize the print
industry."

"The only time I forced myself to keep up was when I made the jump to HD,
it was a sad day waving goodbye to my little family of Canon SD cams."

Rob,

Yeah it's plain to see that once print outfits recognize that this is the avenue that will keep their industry alive, they're going to need professionals who are experienced in production, compositing and interactive design to make the visual elements they'll regularly need. I just hope like one of the VIV mag's creator's said that, "This was not motion for motion's sake, this is still print in spirit...." If those outfits who go into this area keep that in mind, 'Motion Magazines', etc. will be very distinct from traditional Motion Picture products.

I don't really think the iPad has 'revolutionized' anything. The tech is actually 'old' (in tech years) and isn't any real improvement over the iPhone Touch except for the larger viewing area and some more drive space (64GB fixed hard drive? Come on!) However, as always I will give Apple it's props for it's 'Hype Machine' and how that does move people into creating stuff to support their products.

But this thing is going to be bigger than anything Apple planned on cornering the market on. This kind of production will work on mobile devices, netbooks and other tablet devices too. With Adobe making Flash available for all of these devices, there will be plenty of work to go around!

Neil,

You definitely don't want to 'chase technology'. However as you said about making the transition to HD, 'eventually you'll have to wave goodbye to your old gear'. I do still have my SD rigs as they still produce a fine image (I've still got my old Hi-8 rig on active duty!) You never know when you'll need an 'offbeat' look to put in with your HD footage. They can be used like the old days when TV shows shot entirely on film to represent 'the real world' and incorporate video footage to show television.

I'm like you as I hang back a bit to wait for the 'bugs' to get worked out, manuals to be written and for realistic workflows to develop. I have to admit though, I will be scraping up some cash to upgrade from CS3 to 5. I always skip an update with Adobe. I learned way back when not to run out and buy every time they come out with an update (x.0, x.5, x.0). That get's way too expensive.

Rob,

Thanks for the info on Zbrush, looks like it is actually not a sky-high priced package. I'm still working with basic compositing and effects tools and building all the animated models the old fashioned way, with cardboard and glue.

I also like seeing the kind of move the "magazine" is taking and getting the use out of a new tech like the iPad. Rather than see print die, I'd love to see it adapt and evolve.

Composite,

I tend to stay about a generation back on hardware and pick up deals while everyone is boarding the "latest & greatest express", the only time I forced myself to keep up was when I made the jump to HD, it was a sad day waving goodbye to my little family of Canon SD cams. I swear they were crying, but it could have been moisture on the UV lens

Neil,

I believe the one guy said they're using Zbrush, which is a pretty cool program. When I was in college, they had it loaded on all the computers, so I got to screw around with it for a bit. I never took a class for it though since it was for the 3D Animation majors.

Also, I think this could be it's own industry too. Before the iPad was released, everyone was predicting that it will revolutionize the print industry. Obviously this isn't print, but magazines and newspapers now have a new medium for delivering their content.

After watching Adobe's launch of CS5, trying to drown out all the 'buzz' about the 'iPad', 'Droid' and a bunch of other new whiz-bang products getting flung at us everyday, I saw this video about 'Motion Magazine Production'. The all Digital Magazine 'VIV' recently shot their issues' cover and a layout feature completely for the motion mag format. The production shot using live actors, props, and greenscreen with the RED EPIC. Though their project was primarily for the 'i' line of Apple products, I can fully see the potential for this type of work for other devices as well. Take a look at what was done. Though VIV had money to throw at the project, you could with your existing gear produce similar styled content with high production values.

the video will look blurry because you are taking video at 29.97 frames per second and stretching it out for slow motion. Vegas will try to interpolate the frames in order to fill the gaps. you can try different interpolation methods. also if this video is to be viewed on the computer or LCD screen, render progressive and not interlaced.

 Yes...

Â

I'm saying that one because for example, I know what the settings are that I work with and use and I have an idea about the other settings but that's pretty much it (as I have no formal video editing training)...

hmm...I've never heard of that happening with a Quicktime File before. Maybe he needed to update the version of Quicktime player. I'll look into it.

Also, when you say A/V settings. Do you mean all that stuff in the dialogue box when you go to Final Cut Pro>Audio/Video Settings in the menu bar? If, I can do that too.Â

I might be confusing an export problem I had with quicktime pro and not FCP..  Either way, I exported some quicktime files that do strange things..  For example, one file opened on my PC, but not on a guy I work with's mac that has final cut (express), quicktime pro, etc...Â

Also, a DETAILED tutorial on the MANY setting A/V setting options would be cool.. Â

Great minds think alike. I already had this in mind. One question though:

What do you mean by a file that will work on PC and Mac? All files exported out of FCP are some kind of Quicktime file. I've exported files from FCP as a Quicktime and loaded them to a client's server. They then downloaded from the server onto their PC and played the file without a problem.Â

Now, I know there is a download that allows export from FCP to Windows Media player, and that will work on a PC as well.

I will do the research, but as far as I know, the exported file needs to match the player -- If you export a quicktime from FCP, your PC needs quicktime player, if you export a WMV file from FCP, Â the PC needs Windows Media Player.

Does that make sense? Like I said, I will do some research and see if I find anything new. Â

Thank you for the suggestion!Â

A tutorial that details each of the MANY export file types and their purpose would be nice..  A tutorial that correspond between FCP and Compressor would be cool too...  Make sure to include in this how to achieve the smallest possible file with the largest aspect ratio that will play on PC or Mac...

I am thinking about making video tutorials covering Final Cut Studio 2. Then I can start a blog for all to view for convenience. If you don't already know, the major programs included in this bundle are Final Cut Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, Color, Compressor, and DVD Studio Pro.

So, if anyone wants to request a tutorial for any program, I will be more than happy to provide one. Take note that Final Cut Pro is the program I know best, but I will be able to answer some questions regarding any program.

Also, you can count on being disappointed if you are expecting to see a tutorial next week. I'm still in the planning stages, which isn't much, but still takes time. If you need to know something right away, then clearly state it when you request the tutorial. I will at least respond in writing.

Thanks guys.

I believe you can do this with any major NLE. But I know all versions of Vegas can easily achieve your results. As part of the media properties when a clip is on the timeline, I can adjust the playback rate & direction. Vegas Home Studio lets me run my video forward or backward at 4 times normal speed. So an hour of video plays back in 15 minutes. But if I render this video and import it back to the timeline, I can speed the footage up 4 times more, so the 15 minute video will run in under 4 minutes. So now we have the original hour of video appearing to be a 4 minute time lapse video. Render & import once more and speed it to twice the speed and the four minutes will take 2 minutes to play. So the hour passes in 2 minutes and 15 hours would fly by in the half hour you desire. By the way, the final ratio works out to around an acceleration of 32X. If you are curious about how it looks, I could post a video I sped up to 64X real time.

But I will point out that in Vegas Home Studio you have to process the aduio & video seperately. And the audio plug-in I have will only let me double the speed (or halve the time.) But I have sped the audio up to match the video in just the same way and I think it looks and sounds great.

Now there are likely to be other ways to achieve the same effect. But this method can be used with most full scale NLE's.

Good luck and have fun.
