what are dropped frames and how do you prevent them???

when capturing some video I got like over 200 dropped frames and the video quality after was really bad!!!!

I have been using only one tape and re-recording over it, is this bad????

I have a Sony HDR-HC3 HDV camcorder that uses MiniDV tapes

I have a canon GL1. I hear that if you use different brands of miniDV tapes, that it messes w/the playback heads, which can cause problems on the tapes, i.e., blocks, large pixels, skipping, etc...

I recently filmed a wedding and used a different brand of tape. On the 3rd tape, the blockiness appears and the footage is unusable. I tried to play the tape back on 3 other cameras.

If I purchased a miniDV playback system, would I have the same issues? Not sure if they even make those anymore.

I have a Sony TRV27 camcorder that uses a IEEE1394 Firewire connection to transfer my video tapes to the computer. Unfortunately my new computer does not have a Firewire port to connect to. It also does not have a spare PCI slot to add a Firewire card. I'm using Windows 7 and using Pinnacle video software.

Is there any way to download my videos to this new computer? Is there a Firewire to USB adapter available? If available, will it work?

If I'm forced to use an anolog connection, will I loose video quality?

my canon GL1 has been sitting lonely on a shelf for a few years now. i never liked having to do video capture in order to get the video into my pc which is probably one of the reasons i gave up on video as a hobby - that is until digital camcorders that could record to sdhc came on the scene. since then, i've been rekindling my hobby since it is so each to get video into the pc now. but, i still wish i could find some use for my GL1 without breaking the bank. does anyone know if any of these things are possible and how to do it

1 - connect the GL1 directly to a pc to record directly to disk rather than to a miniDV tape. i would be willing to use the camera in a fixed studio setting if this is possible

2 - is there a cheap miniDV player that can convert a tape to sdhc or a harddrive

3 - i know there is a cool device that can connect to the DV port and record directly to a built in hard drive, but this is rather expensive - way more than what i would be willing to spend. http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=QSDV-HDV-6&Category_Code=DV&Product_Count=0

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi all, I am trying to capture video from a Sony miniDV camcorder using Nero 10 and firewire. I can see the device on screen and a scrambled version of the capture. It looks as though the pixels are all there, but very scrambled up and some of the bottom of the image is being shown at the top. Audio is ok. Can anyone advise what is happening and how to fix it? Windows movie maker gives the same result. Computer system is Win7 core i5 firewire. Thanks!

Could someone help me to understand why there seem to be no consumer-level MiniDV tape players? And why are they "pro only" in price when you do find them?

For years we have shot on 5-10 grades of video cameras from consumer to pro; and all used MiniDV tapes. We firewire the camera to a PC port and convert the tapes to DV-AVI format then archive the tapes. Always hated it - to me it only adds hours of wear and tear on the tape mechanism in the cam and is usually inconvenient in the workflow. So I started looking for a simple MiniDV tape playback deck we could patch into the PC and avoid using the camera for playback.

Mainly what I have found is $800-$2500 pro-grade tape decks. If I could afford one I'd grab it and not look back. There do not seem to be consumer-grade or prosumer grade decks at all. Can anyone explain how there can be $50-$200 video cameras which record and playback on MiniDV, but no matching decks - even from the same manufacturer? Is it a case of the recording formats used by different video cameras? Seems that if it was proprietary recording format you'd see Sony/Canon/etc sell their own brands of MiniDV players.

What am I missing here?

Hello!

I am new on this forum and I'm starting film school in a couple of weeks. One of the materials I will need for this semester is, of course, a camera.

My school suggests http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/597358-REG/Canon_3543B001_ZR960_MiniDV_Camcorder_.html/

but I can use another camcorder as long as it can perform the same tasks or more.

I read the reviews on it and it seems to be a nice camera but for casual use and I would like to get a camera that I will be able to use in future projects such as short films and documentaries, instead of buying a basic one now and then having to buy another one.

I saw this other Canon on sale and the reviews seem to be better. A bit more money but it seems that I would get a lot more (?)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/671645-REG/Canon_4355B001_VIXIA_HF_M30_Dual.html

I don't know as of yet what exact projects we will be doing during the semester but I do know that there will be a lot of file transferring to the computer in order to upload it on the class forum. - I have a <span style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;">MacBookPro7,1- so I was also wondering if flash memory was easier for this or if MiniDV was a better option.</span>

<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;">If anyone could let me know which camcorder is a better option or direct me to another better deal, I would really appreciate it!</span>

<span style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px;">Thank you. :)</span>

This edit deck has very low hours on it being used for only a few personal projects each year and the very occasional one for a client. Note that this is one of only a few DV decks that takes both miniDV and full-size DV tapes. With a full-size tape you can have over 3 Hours of recording time at SP speed!

It is in perfect condition, essentially as new. All the original accessories are included: owner's manual, cables, etc., except for the remote batteries and the cleaning cassette. I'll include a 186min. full-size size tape (used) instead.

This is by far the best tape deck I've ever used and that includes many professional models. The rewind and fast forward speeds are almost not to be believed. The built-in edit functions do not compare to using a computer-based editor, but they work perfectly and easily.

It will ship in the original Sony box and packing.
Please contact me with any questions. I'll answer as best I can.

I am looking to buy a new prosumer level camera to shoot local tourism videos and weddings and conferences. So kind of a wide-range. I also want to buy something that will be relevant and practical for several years.

I've been asking some friends for advice and one says I should stick with Sony. One says I should stick with Panasonic. One says I should get HDV. Another few says STAY AWAY FROM HDV FOREVER ITS THE DEVIL (His words, not mine).

I don't really understand the difference between HDV and DVCPro HD or what is so wrong with HDV.

I don't know if I would be okay with a $2000 camera like the Sony HDR-FX7 or if I should go all out and look for a used HVX200 kit.

I also don't know if I should look only at flash drive cameras or tape cameras.

The HVX200 looks so practical because it records to P2 cards *or* tape *or* a firestore drive. Some of the kits I've been looking at include some P2 cards and even firestore drives.

But would it be more economical/practical to just go with a traditional tape camera?

I DON'T KNOW and feel so overwhelmed. I would appreciate honest feedback if anyone can help me. Thank you!

It is my goal to capture the highest quality video I can to burn to
Archival DVDs with my current equipment.

I have a Panasonic Mini DV PVGS120 camcorder and boatloads of wonderful movies I want to save. But this camcorder will NOT connect to any of the 4 computers I own (firewire) Believe me, I have tried EVERYTHING with multiple computers, made tons of calls, dropped messages on forums, etc. The camcorder cannot be recognized as a device and videos cannot be imported. If this would work, I would be done and happy.

So, I got my hands on a Sony VRD-MC5 | DVDirect® MC5 Multi-Function DVD Recorder, which works like a champ with my Little Panasonic. Videos transfer over, and the way I understand it, the video it creates is MPEG2. To my eye, this part of the process preserves quality of the MiniDV tapes pretty well.

But ... here's where things go wrong.

Standard Def Videos from the MC5 will not play in new Sony BluRay DVD players. MPEG2 is not listed among the compatible formats for my new Sony Blu Ray, and the disk freezes up if you insert it. Only SONY camcorders can record in AVCHD on the MC5.

So what would you do?Â

Dub the videos to the MPEG2 disks using the MC5, edit them in Corel Video Studio and then output a DVD*?Â

Buy another MiniDV camcorder that the PC will recognize (I really don't want to spend the $$$ - I have a Canon HDD/HD camcorder already)

Something I'm not thinking of?

* My cursory test of this method shows "muddy" video output (like VHS
quality) but I cannot figure out where the quality loss is happening -
or how to avoid it.

I'm exasperated. Your expert opinion is needed

Â

Hello,

Would love some pro advice. I'm shooting on a Canon XH A1 but using miniDV tapes in the camera to save budget. However, the HDV camera is borrowed and I can't use it to screen and digitize my footage. When I try to play one of the miniDV tapes on my miniDV camera, Sony TRV900 (a prosumer camera) it does not play. The timecode doesn't even register.

Please help! Thanks so much!

I'm a video production student as well as a news intern. The news station has told me to buy a camera and start putting together my own packages. I have dreams of shooting a documentary, but I could also possibly get hired by the station. I'm currently training with their shooters as well as in writing/producing. I ended up buying a new dvx100b for $2000 total (we use the original dvx100 at school and I'm familiar with it) but immediately had buyer's remorse. I've heard so many professional opinions I don't know which way to turn. Here's the gist:

1. ME: I'm familiar with the DVX line, like it and it has a good rep (plus I won't deny it looks professional) I would like manual control and XLR inputs but would put up with an audio input used in consumer lines (guessing 1/8 inch)

2. Teacher 1 opinion: "DVX100b is a great camera and HD is changing fast. wait and save for HD."

3. Teacher 2 opinion: "buy a cheaper HD camera and rent a fancy cam when you get hired for gigs - it's all about framing anyway."

4. Stringers use even cheaper canon HD's and their video makes the news

5. opinion 5:"Everyone wants HD, no one will pay for your lame-o SD...SD is over."

6. Opinion 6: "DV tapes take too long to ingest."

7. Teacher 1: "Data/video saved to a Hard Drive and not backed up can be lost."

8. My opinion: one caveat to the dvx is that I would also like to shoot climbing videos on the side and a smaller camera is better for that - though this is a minor side project. Ideally I would like to shoot a short doc for KQED - that sort of thing, plus packages for news.

So, should i return the DVX100B, save my money, get a consumer cam?

Anyone got a better recommendation than the VIXIA?

I'm planning on getting a tripod, mic, etc. no matter what camera I choose. I would really appreciate some guidance, and yes - I'm looking to make money with this camera.

Hello,

I am new to this site as of today and I hope that I have found a good place to learn from some of the vest out there. I have a general question, but first I will explain my situation. I started out as a hobbyist, just taking pictures with my DSLR camera. After a while, people started noticing my work and were impressed, especially with me being so new at it.Â

I recently was hired for a few birthday parties and for me that was GREAT and the pictures were loved. Well of course word got out, so now I have been asked to take pictures and video for a wedding in September. I am not worried about the pictures, but the video I am.  I do not own a camcorder, and I haven't the slightest clue where to start. I am by no means a professional, but I do not believe in giving people cheap products. I have been researching for weeks now looking for the perfect, yet not most expensive or cheap camcorder.Â

I have been researching the Canon HF 11, HF 100, HG 20, HG 21 and also the Sony products. I don't know which formats are best for long filming MiniDV, DVD, Flash or HDD. Should I invest in lighting, microphones etc etc. I know this was rather long for my first post, but I am hoping that enough of you will read this, have been where I am standing, and can share your best practice approach. Remember....

I am a beginner, but I am by no means an amatuer. What I mean by that is, I am VERY Tech Savvy, and electronics are second nature to me, so I am not intimidated by features or manuals. Any suggestions, I would greatly appreaciate. Thank you in advance!

hello
I want to buy my first Camcorder and i'm confused. i need a simle camera at about 500$. no special requirements. i dont need a super-high quality of films, just for family shootage.

I heard about the miniDV format, which intorduces the best quality but is complicated to convert the file to a watchable DVD on the TV (or connect to a PC). On the other hand i know the flash cameras are gaining poularity because the simplicity, although i've head that the quality is not as good as mini-DV. I don't know how bad is it, or is it noticeable for home-footage.
IÂ also heard about camcoders with mini-DVDR, and might consider this type too.

I'm mainly thinking about 2 models: SONY DCRHC51E (miniDV) or CANON FSA100 (flash)

Can anyone reccomend me which technology is better for my needs?

Thanks!

Hi
I want to buy a new camera and I have some doubts.
The comparison is between VX2100 and HDR-SR11 - MiniDV or HDD camcorders.
I know that is a big difference between them including the price, VX2100 is almost double as price.
First question that comes in my mind is how reliable are the HDD camcorders?
The estimated usage is about 3-5 hours/week in SD format. I think the obvious choice in this case is Sony VX2100.
Best regards.
Mihai
