i'm in the same boat as OP.. I can get a Samson UHF Series 1 and a MR7 for about $100 anyone familiar with these? Are they good? Any other current models that folks suggest for 2 affordable lav-capable mics?

Roblewis56, you're link didn't go through.. at least I didn't see it.

I totally agree with Roblewis56, use mine ($34.95) all the time, and I also have the option to use handheld which in your case might not detract from the neighborhood interviews segment of your project. I do have a UHF wireless system by Sony (UWP V6, about $900) built like a tank and very, VERY dependable. But that's not where you have to go for decent narrative audio.

You are recording voice, not music, so you don't need the wide frequency response you would need for music. So I suggest a RadioShack Tie-Clip Microphone. Should be about $30. with 4ft cord. You can get a 16ft extension. I use this mic for doing voice over.

A lavaliere Mic system is pricey, two of them very pricey. One way to lessen the cost is by visiting your local Music Store. The folks that sell Drum Kits, Guitars and many other Musical Instruments are audio experts. They can help you and odds on they will have a rental system you could take advantage of. Spending $1400 on 2 wireless sets is big for 3 shooting days, where 25 dollars a day time two setsis about $600. Do it on a weekend, they might charge you only for one day, out Saturday Morning, back Monday Morning. See if they have used equipment for sale, they may surprise you.

Welcome! In the low-cost arena there are a number of choices from Zoom (the H1, H2 and H2n) and from Tascam (DR 05, DR 07 mkII, DR 08, etc.) all of which should be under a hundred quid.

As for syncing, it isn't too difficult, but there is dedicated software (Pluraleyes) that will do it for you. HTH.

Hello!

I'm on the lookout for a handheld wireless microphone to improve the audio of my videos. My camera has no jack for a wired microphone, neither do any of the cameras in my price range in the UK.

Two questions;

* Could anyone recommend a wireless microhone which plugs into a computer?

* Is it feasible to try and sync this audio with video using video editing software>

Many thanks from Joe a new member :)

" I am beginning my first documentary about the life and times in my old neighborhood, and I would like to interview some of the people that I grew up with.

Of course, I could use the built-in microphone on my camcorder, but I would like to use a lavalier microphone as I believe I would get a better audio result. "

No doubt you would! Have you paid attention to the miniature lavalier mics worn by all on-camera newsfolk? Really, that's just about all you need to know . . . unless you ARE planning on purchasing a wireless system as Pseudosafari assumes. Hard-wired lavs are, as one might suspect, significantly cheaper than a wireless, and could possibly work out well for you . . . unless you're planning on some medium-distance or full-figure shots while the subject is walking around.

If you are planning on future productions, then you should plan on buying the very best you can afford so that you won't have to upgrade any time soon. A good hard-wired lav can be found for around $ 100; a good wireless system can be found for $ 400 to $ 700.

As a videographer, you'll most likely be looking at new camera gear in the future, and that's where you should spend your money.

this forum is a great resource to start with. search past entries on here, too. read and compare catalog descriptions and specs on sites like B&H Video (and even call them, they're pretty good) and then search for reviews on Youtube. that's what i did before buying and i am generally happy with how it worked out.

for lavs, VHF is cheaper than UHF but since it offers fewer channels you sometimes get more interference. i have a vhf set from azden though and it works fine for me. you can use different mics, too, not just a lav (I plug a boom into it sometimes and a regular looking mic for those man on the street interviews and it works just fine). i'm rural, so not much interference. if you're in a city, UHF might be more important.

Hi Paul,

I can't say I'm too familiar with the G3 model, but we frequently use the G2 model in our video production. If you press the "set" button on the receiver it will give you several options. Arrow up or down until you find "bank" press "set" again to select a bank.

Then arrow down until you find "scan", press "set" to select the option, and the receiver will start scanning for an open frequency. Once it finds an open frequency it will stop (if there are multiple frequencies available it will give you a choice). Select the frequency you desire. Then, just be sure to adjust your transmitter to same settings and you should be set to go.

The other adjustment you'll want to make is to the mic sensitivity. Ours is set to -30, but that's not going to be the case for all mics and scenarios.

blue fire itouch ap and radio shack lapel mic are a decent combination... for individuals, rode video mic possible will test the combination and get back to you.

you need to start with an older sony camcorder audio/video plug (or iphone mic/headphones jack) and cut it and solder a mono jack into the video wire (mic) and solder a stereo jack into the red and white audio wires. plug that into the itouch, and plug the rode mic into the video jack, and plug head phones into the audio jack. you can now monitor and record off the itouch using the blue fire ap.

Less is more for run-and-gun event video productions, especially weddings. Doing audio feeds, running cable and communicating between units is a LOT of labor for a field where B&Gs seem to want MORE for less every minute they shop around. Newmovies is ON IT with the "less to lug around" approach.

I have two GL2s that I use in weddings to supplement my XL2. For the GLs I use a BeachTek adapter which accepts XLR connections. The Beachtek connects to the tripod mount on the bottom of the cam and the tripod plate connects to the bottom of the Beachtek. I use Azden shotgun mics mounted on the cams wired to the Beachtek. It makes for a compact setup, lightweight and very mobile with very good sound. You can use two mics on each cam with this setup. Also, using the beachtek lets me wire one cam to the house mixer for direct line input which gives a little better control over audio.

I used the setup like you described at one time, but found the Beachtek solution from bhphotovideo.com a better solution for me. Like I said, less stuff to lug around and actually a little better quality. As a side note, using a small analog mixer seemed to give a little more of the analog hiss to the higher frequencies of the audio than I liked. I don't seem to have that using the Beachtek.

Any ideas, thoughts, help would be gratefully accepted. I am bringing in the Canon GL2 as a new addition to my work. I have some basic Shure mics and a Mackie 402VLZ3 small mixer. My objective is to be able to travel with my equipment, show up at a location and be up and running to film and audio record. I think the Mackie mixer I have will work but I am asking if there are any mics (small) but that offer good audio recording quality.

Perhaps there are some of you out there who have a good menu of equipment you use that gives you high quality audio reproduction and can be carried around easily. Example: My GL2 in one shoulder and another carry bag for the rest of the equipment.

I welcome emails also at: tai@taicoproductions.com

You can use an XLR-BP adapter from Studio 1, which allows you to connect any combination of two microphones (xlr, mini jack, powered or unpowered) to any camcorder with a standard 1/8" mic input jack http://www.studio1productions.com/xlr-bp.htm

Alternatively you can use the Azden CAM-3 three mic mixer. They cost about $45 from Amazon

If you don't want to go with a mixer, I recommend the Canon DM100 microphone. It is made for the Canon hot shoe which powers the mic. It has terrific sound and works fine when there is a 2nd mic plugged into the camera. This clip was recorded with the DM100 from the crappy upper deck seats. I control the record volume manually so there is little distortion.

I agree with Road Runner. SignVideo makes great mixing units and because your Camcorder

only has the mini stereo mic input, you would then have the luxury of having XLR mic connections

and audio level controls. Try a monopod too

three ways... some lav mics have an extra mic jac on thier recievers.

some mic adaptors (ie beachtek) have multiple mic adaptors...

you could try headphone splitters, but an external mixing board would give seperate volume controls

Hey, I was wondering how you would put a shotgun mic and a lavaliere mic on one camera. I have Canon Vixia HF S10 and plan on using a Audio Technica at897 and I'm not sure about the wireless lav mic yet.

Help would be appreciated

I feel Shure and Sennheiser make good mics.

Are you looking for a wired mic or a wireless mic? Wireless will be significantly more expensive if you hope to record good quality.

One think you want to look at when looking at mics is the signal to noise ratio. 64dB is fair, 74db is quite good, and 84dB or more is outstanding.

"Also, where can I go to order a branded slip on for the mic?"

You mean a mic flag? I believe those can be found at B&H. In fact, B&H is a great place to buy all your stuff.

Hello,

I am not sure I am posting at the right location, but I just joined Videomaker today with the hope that I will be able to get some assistance with a few questions I have about shooting on camera interviews.

My first question is what brand and type of hand held microphone do you recommend the most, for in front of camera interviews. I am talking about something like the interviews for instance done at the red carpet events, like from E online for example: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/redcarpet/2010_oscars/index.html

Do you know what ,mics they use, what brand, price range etc, or what else might do the job and look and sound similar?

Also, where can I go to order a branded slip on for the mic?

I have more questions about type of camera etc. But these two are my most burning questions at the moment. I hope I can get some assistance here. I highly appreciate it in advance.

Yep it's a great mic. I bought mine on ebay for $120 and am really impressed with it and it's a good price too. I've been using it for about a week now and can't really think of anything bad to say about it.
