Hi,

I hope you all can help me. I have just got myself a second hand Canon XM1 which is really good for what I want. However, it never came with any instructions and I have an issue that I just cant work out.

I want to use a microphone to help boost sound levels...especially when I interview however, when I put the mic jack in the slot, it kills off all sound completely.

Any thoughts?

<span style="font-size: medium;">I used this item for 2-3 years and then it sat in storage for a good 10 years. I powered it up and checked it and it works fine. Please note that this is a VHF system and is subject to VHF anomalies. One of the belt clips on a lavalier mic is busted, otherwise functionally and cosmetically good to go. $130 shipped USPS Priority.</span>

I'd like to experiment with an ext mic for my GZ-MS100U...I understand that it may be possible to drive an audio in signal through the A/V jack.....anyone try this? I think the built-in is a condenser mic, so would a small preamp be needed with an external? I tried opening the unit up to add a jack but there's just no room in this tightly packed cam...

Hi. Can anyone recommend a good shotgun mic for the Panasonic TM700. I want to spend between $150 and $250. Not absolutely professional but a reasonable piece of equipment for the price. All suggestions appreciated.

I own two shotgun mics, an AT-897 and a Rode NTG-2, and I'm having the same problem with each (which makes me think that what I'm experiencing is not a "problem" and is completely normal). Here's the situation: When I have one of the mics connected to a Zoom H4N audio recorder, I have to have the recording levels all the way up (to level 100). With the levels all the way up, I have to be just 6-inches directly in front of the mic to be able to talk in a normal voice volume and register -12db on the Zoom (in an otherwise silent room). If I back up to 3 feet from the front of the mic, speaking in a normal voice volume only gets me to -24db. Now, I know you need to be as close to the mic as possible to obtain the best quality, but I would expect to be able to be at least 3ft away and not have to turn the audio recorder's levels to their max. Because when I bring the -24db to normal levels in post, the amount of noise increases as well.

My question is: are shotgun mics supposed to be like this? Is this an issue with the Zoom H4N? It would seem to me that I should have more wiggle room with the Zoom's recording levels to make the mic much more sensitive.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Can anyone recommend a good solution for micing a camcorder to record sound in front and behind the camera. Obviously a shotgun mic works great for the subject in front of the camera, but if the person doing the recording is also asking the questions, the shotgun mic attenuates and destorts the volume.

My current solution is to use 2 mics, a shotgun and a wireless lavalier for the interviewer behind the camera. The only problem with it is that it requres more components to merge the 2 signals, and it's cumbersome to set up and adjust properly.

Does anyone have any alternative approaches that they recommend?

I got a wedding on saturday for a friend, first one i will ever do, and it might become more of a business than a hobby with the word of mouth going around. When i plan on doing interviews, i want the person to be able to talk into my sm58 for clear and crisp audio. My camcorder (Canon hf m30) has a 1/8" mic input. So questions...

If i get a 1/8" M to xlr F cable, does it matter if the 1/8 is in stereo or mono. I've read people complain of hissing and such.

Is there gonna be an impedence mismatch, i realize the mic is Low-z, but can the camera do Hi and Low z?

Where can i buy this?

I'm new to this camera, but I really feel like an idiot asking this question. Everything Panasonic prints says that the XLR inputs are Line/Mic selectable (for 0 db or -50/-60 db). The leftmost audio switches on the side, from what I can tell, simply switch the source of channel 1 and 2, and the right two switches turn on/off +48V phantom power.

Where in the heck do you select Line or Mic level input?

All the manuals imply this is an obvious thing, but I plead total ignorance here.

Can somebody steer me in the right direction?

I'm not sure if what I'm looking for is actually available. I'd like to get a wireless adapter for microphones I already use. XLR, 1/8th or both. Basically, I want to be able to plug my mic into a transmitter and plug a receiver in to my camera. Ideally, it would be great to inexpensively turn my SM58 into a wireless mic, but even if I can do it with self-powered lavs it would be helpful!

I am using a GL2, and am filming an educational video which will have much of the footage voiced over with narration. Because of this, I filmed the footage so far (2 days worth) with the mic adapter connected to the mic input on the camera, but I did not connect the mic to the adapter (being a complete newbie, I thought for some reason this would be better than having sound generated from the GL2's mic). My question is, with what I have done so far, will I still be able to add the narration (i am using Sony Vegas)? Second question - is it better to film the way I filmed so far, or film with the sound from the GL2's mic?

I couldn't think of a better title but hopefully this will suffice. I read Videomaker religiously as one of only two magazines that I never miss a month. The other is HD Video Pro. The stuff I notice in all of the magazines are ads and review guides about all kinds of accessories for cameras. My problem is that this dilutes the market and it makes it very hard to know what are accessories and what are add-ons. Things like mate boxes, add-on batteries, dollies, lights, twelve mics, 87 filters, rail systems, etc. It all just seems so daunting. What accessories are needed and which ones are just supperlative?

I currently use a JVC GY-HD110u with a tripod, dolly, extra mic and XLR cable, and a three light kit. Am I missing out on something that would really set me to the next level, or am I still beign held back only by my skill? I don't usually post general noob Q's like this but I just can't figure out who would <span style="text-decoration: underline;">need</span> all of that stuff.

Hi,

I'm a videographer shooting with a Panasonic PV-GS 70, I shoot mostly live bands and loud music concerts. I want to improve the audio quality of my recordings (right now using built in camera mic) but have a dilemma and need your help. I've been researching the different options I have and wanted to know which one you think would be best considreing a budget of $200.

1. Buy an External Mic for Camcorder: Like the Rode SVM or Sennheiser MKE400

Pro's: Would Probably improve my recordings and have shoe mount to go directly on camera. Also I wouldn't need to synch the audio to the video in post-production when editing and that would save me a lot of time (also sometimes it's hard to synch the drums precisely with all the cymbols etc...)

Con's: My camera doesn't have a manual audio control and I'm scared that at high volumes the sound will clip. I can't afford to buy also a beachtek adaptor to regulate the levels going in the camera.
Also I saw some youtube clips of concerts shot with the rode svm and I wasn't too impressed with the sound quality. Also wondering if less expensive mics would do the job?

2. Other option is to buy a Portable Audio Field Recorder like the Zoom H2

Pro's: I can control the levels and adapt depending on the venue size etc...Reviews and audio quality are pretty good. Also have option to record in wav or mp3 format.

Con's: Wouldn't know where to put it (doesn't have shoe mount to go on camera). Not sure if I can connect the output of the zoom H2 to my camera mic in (that would save me the editing process of synching audio to video). If it can't be connected to the camera mic in, I would have to edit and synch the audio to video.

I know that many of you would suggest that the best audio for concerts would be by getting it from the sound guy mixer. Problem with that is that sometimes the mixer is far from the stage and would be dangerous to get a really long cable to connect. I could connect it via wireless but very expensive. Other problem with that is that some sound guys are not very nice and don't want to help you unless you pay them!

Please let me know what you guys think I appreciate your help!

I have a Canon HG10. And i LOVE it. I also bought an Audio Tech. ATR 55 mic. I have noticed a small noise that sounds like someone paning with a tight, cheap tripod. That grinding noise, happened to be my camera's hard drive. And boy dose it sound amatureish. I CANT STAND IT. I have tried an "L" bracket but it makes the camera sooooo much less conveinent. I really need a way for me to record anything withoul listening to zooming noise and Hard Drive noise.

I have a JVC Everio GZ-MG555, and need a good mic that I can mount on my camera. I'll be talking into it, but I will also be shooting skateboarding videos very often. I know VERY little about this stuff. So what you recommend?

Thanks!

The built in mic is not all that great. There are no jacks for an external mic. Is there a workaround for this or am I stuck? I use the camcorder mostly for recording speeches given in a restaurant/breakfast environment. The Speaker is about 10-12 feet away and I also pick up background noises like knives and forks as people eat breakfast. I am new at all of this and hope there is a reasonable solution.

I need to figure out a way to record interviews and voice overs in a 24' x 40' room that has carpeting, but no other sound deadening wall coverings, curtains or ceiling tiles. I have not had much luck even after hanging blankets a few feet away from the talent. The wireless lav mic I tried was out of the question. The Shure SM58 is better, but the louder the voice, the more echo in the recording. I'm thinking about trying a PZM. Has anyone else had success in selecting a mic that is forgiving towards echo?

Soooo, I use a Sony Hdrsr11 for all my video needs. I love it. But I have recently decided to delve into the audio world, now that i have discovered how crapy my audio has been.

SO i bought a JuicedLink XLR adapter (the CX211 if you must, http://juicedlink.com/index_files/CX_camcorder_XLR_microphone_adapter_audio_mixers_CX211.htm), because i really wanted a dedicated and attached connector, not just a cable. BUT THE PROBLEM IS, the dc voltage coming from my "pluginpower" mic jack is causing a contstant buzz/humm/crap when i plug it in...

I have researched the shure a96f and similar products (something that will "shunt" or "block" the dc voltage coming from the jack) and thought about cutting off the 3.5 mm end and finding a way to solder it to my Juicedlink's 3.5mm cable....But this seems expensive and a little sketchy....

Is there a 3.5mm cable adapter or cable thing in existence that i could use to block this voltage?? Preferably not a 60 dollar cord that i have to cut up and melt to something else haha...has anyone been successful at blocking the dc voltage coming from a "plug in power" mic???

THIS IS A MESSAGE TO ALL AUTOBOTS AMONG THE STARS...Help!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, im currently having a hard time finding a mic that actually works on the ZR900.

the problem, as far as i have been able to investigate, is the type of microphone, for example, if i connect a "normal" lapel microphone, it just doesnt record a thing, i think its because its a quartz crystal microphone.

i thought that the plug in the camera was broken or something, but if i record from a "powered" source, such as an ipod or such, it records great. i found that if i record from a pair of headphones (yes, thats not a mistake, i connected headphones) the soundis also great, and that makes me think that a diaphragm mic would do the trick... but im still yet to find a mic that works...

any suggestions? thnx a lot!
