I have found Adobe Premiere doesn't utilize all my RAM that much. I only max out on RAM when I am working with dynamic link with Premiere & Encore or Premiere & Photoshop. Right now I have 6 sticks of 2GB DDR3. I was always under the impression that maintaining an even distro of RAM over as many sticks as possible was best for video editing. Although, now I'm not sure how much of an effect it has.

Another brand new setup question:

I have an HP computer with an AMD quad-core and 6GB DDR3 RAM (triple channel?)..

The motherboard (Foxcomm AERO) has (4) four memory slots.

Am I better off to do 4GB x 3, or 4G x 4? In other words, do I gain in utility what I might lose in speed by going 4G x 4 (I have no idea if this is one of the MB's that does the 1-4/2-3 triple chennel wiith four RAM slots trick, VS. 4G x 3?

Thanks for any assist!

If you've got a little more money, Panasonic just released this camcorder:

http://www.panasonic-broadcast.com/en/products/p2-series/p2-cam/AG-HPX301E_PREVIEW.php

It records AVC-Intra100 10-bit 4:2:2, as well as the other DVCPro codecs.Â

What does 9500 euros convert to in American dollars?Â

I think JVC's new camcorders are great value for money options (although I love Panasonic AG-HVX200 - still the P2 cards are too expensive). I think JVC will raise the bar among other manufacturers to find cheap card solutions (maybe the price of P2 cards will drop now?). Is this JVC's answer to AVCCAM AG-HMC150 camcorder, launched by Panasonic as an affordable HD camera?

For those who have the money see the ikonoskop A-cam dIIÂ (a High Definition RAW Format Motion Picture Camera - competitor to RED but less price)

http://www.ikonoskop.com

I was looking at the MkII because we need to upgrade our still rigs anyway. The HD is a usable bonus and will come in handy for aerial and gigs in tight spaces. That's interesting about the 'jello' effect, but I'm not surprised since they haven't put in any image stab yet. You'd have to get a lens that does that (not cheap!) Every thing I've seen video wise was shot on some sort of support, except for one aerial clip (which was awesome!) Never expected it to 'supplant' a dedicated camera rig, just want it for support which is all I would have gotten the JVC for. Since we already have a good selection of EOS lenses, $2,669 is a good deal and it will be easier faking out the authorities by giving them a roll of film than 'horking' up a solid-state card or worse, the camera because we can't pull out a tape.

Concerning anything RED, to paraphrase Earl on another post, "I don't have anymore children to sell."

Don't get THAT much HD video with the 5D (at $3,499 with a lens kit, $2,699 without not really that great a price for a DSLR primary camera with HD video capabilities just another feature built into it) - shooting HD video is limited to about 5 minute continuous shots.

Reviews in the January 2009 Videography magazine indicate there are other problems with the CMOS that make shooting the unweildy DSLR body style handheld an unhappy experience, with the "jello effect" and also limited audio input options.

Still a lot of obstacles to overcome before either the Nikon D90 ($999.95, $1,299 with an 18-105 mm VR lens, or the Canon supplant a camcorder at any price, brand or recording platform. Canon's own people acknowledge that the camera is primarily a still camera with a full HD feature.

We're seriously looking at getting one, but I reeeeeally hate that they took the tape option away. For 4k, I want options. Not to mention the price of solid-state cards aren't dropping significantly. It would be different if you weren't getting as good an image on tape. What about all of these kids trying to break into the biz? This stuff's expensive. The whole thrust of the 'Digital Revolution' was that the hardware and software had become affordable. Though the camera would be compatible with our 200UB, I'm thinking we may go with the Canon 5D Mark II. Great images and costs a little more than half of the JVC.

Yeah, nice touch with the dual card slots and native QT drag-and-drop files for FCP editors, but not to be released until sometime in April.

Might induce Panasonic to upgrade their AG-HMC150 at least to dual slots, if not more, just to try and keep up/ahead with the other manufacturer "keep up" efforts.

This info has actually been available in a few places for awhile now, not to mention the January edition of Videography magazine.

Yes, the HV30 isn't true HD, though at least as I understand, no camcorder that records to HDV are true HD because the media is compressed automatically when you use tape...

Â

Either way, I have the HV30 and it is a great little camera.. Â I use it for pickups, behind the scenes footage, webisodes, and as a capture device.. Â works great...Â

 If you insist...ha

In your situation it would be OK to get the HV30. It's not like you're getting a Sony F35, you'd be swatting flies with a nuke then. If you have a reason for HD, then go for it. I was just saying not to get too hyped about it because some people do and don't even realize that you also need an HD TV, Blu-Ray burner, Blu-Ray player, and maybe a better computer, although I'm sure your computer can handle HD from the HV30.

There IS NO "prosumer" camcorder for around 1,500 bucks new.

There IS a really, really nice entry level high definition camera, the Canon HV30, that records true HD to MiniDV for under $900. Great starting point for amateurs, hobbyists, semi-pros, and is even getting a lot of use from so-called professionals as backup or third camera, even playback unit for ingesting into their respective editing systems.

Yea, if this is just a hobby, you may be able to find a used Canon GL1 or GL2 on Craig's List or Ebay for less than $1000. It's a great camera for hobbyists and those who are serious but are just starting out.

Capture to an external hard drive or a second internal hard drive. Never capture to your primary hard drive. Also, I've been told the hard drive speed should be no slower than 7200rpm.

One hour of video is 12-13GB, although, I've also been told you don't want to fill your hard drive more than half way because then it's only working half as good. So for example, I wouldn't fill a 500GB hard drive more than 250GB.

I believe dropped frames has to do with the speed of your drive. If you're talking about drop out, which is when some pixels are like, not there and look like the color of rainbows kinda, then that has to do with having dirty heads in your camcorder or deck.

You need firewire as well. Â

Also if i get a miniDV cam, like what requirements are well like required to capture miniDV footage to computer smoothly...???

The camera needs to have a firewire port. When you capture, make sure you software is set for the right codec. You should be capturing in the "DV/DVCPro NTSC" codec. You should also be capture to an external hard drive or a second internal hard drive. Do not capture video to your primary hard drive.Â

I would like to know if the quality from the Samsung MX20 going to be worse, better or equal to that of a miniDV when burned to DVD???

That camera seems to be pretty crappy. It records H.264, which you can't really edit, depending on the software you use. It also only has 1/6" image sensors. That's tiny. I wouldn't go below 1/3"

I wouldn't bother with the cameras that record to a hard drive either. It's nice to have the footage on tape.
