Couldn't handle it if things got much busier. No relief (?) in sight until the second week in February.

The recession hit us hard two years ago but we've been able to shift focus a bit and are nearly back to where we need to be.

I always strive to get jobs signed and sealed by the first week in December. After that it is a drought until late in January. I always have a few jobs that I do on spec and I keep these for December thru January. It keeps me busy at least and there is the hope of money down the line.

This year seems to be particularly slow, perhaps it is because of the overall economy being so shaky.

fame, sorry about the blank posts, I'm not sure what went wrong when I was posting. As far as your video, I liked it and there was lots of good stuff. I think that it would have more impact if it were tightened up some. If some of the clips were trimmed to make it closer to one minute or so, I think that you would grab the audience and keep them till the end, in my humble opinion. Keep shooting.

What do you guys think? Hope you like it! Thanks! (It was not pre-planned, but I try to get some after-game shots for little news snippets, which then turned into a promo...)

NEGuy on "Real Estate Videos Revisited"

The $60K home maybe not, but I very regularly do homes that are in the $200-300K range and they will still pay $200-$300 for a video. That's my bread and butter business. I do probably 3-8 of those types of houses every single day all year long.

Why? It's NOT about the house. It's about a marketing strategy that sets them apart from their competition. It's about attracting new listings. It's about standing out. It's NOT about selling ONE single house and the cost of marketing vs. the commission for THAT house.

People who understand that concept are on board.

Just like in the old days when people were advertising in (and reading) newspapers. The successful advertisers advertised REGULARLY (weekly, daily, etc). They had a contract. That had repeated impressions. They weren't selling a HOUSE on those ads (even though often times there was a photo of a house), but they were selling themselves. Having a presence every single week is what got them new business. If they had a house to market, fine. If not, maybe just an institutional or generic ad. But they were THERE every week. But they were known because of their consistent advertising and because they DID advertise.

Doing videos for marketing is 30% about selling a house, and 70% about selling an agent or broker. Granted, most Realtors don't 'get it', but some do, and those are your customers. As soon as they realize they got 3 new listings from their video on their $200K house, or someone recognizes them at the grocery store or at an open house, they see the value and why they're doing video.

Excellent work NEGuy... however, in rural Wisconsin the market is quite smaller. I will shoot 2-4 videos a month (10 during a really busy month and 0 in the "off" months). I get paid every month, videos or not.

I like your input about the "teaser video". I'm finding the same as you, the 5-7 minute videos get more attention (so now, mine are longer). Keep in mind, a low end home sells for ~$60,000, the high end around $500K. We only have about 4 "million +" homes in our "area". Soooo, for me to get $350 for a video of a 100K house is a "no go" (brokers won't pay that much). I could probably get $350 for the high end homes, but because the brokers around here don't use videographers, I'd be placing myself out of business.

But, all that being said, thank you for the reply (and criticism). Sometimes I do think I'm crazy -- but I also remember that I would much rather be doing videos than working in a factory just because it "pays better". Really though, how else am I gonna find out what others are doing (and getting paid) if I don't post the questions. Again, thank you.

$100 per month for unlimited videos? Are you crazy? LOL

How can you make a living doing that? As I write this I am down on Martha's Vineyard doing 30 videos tours in 5 days for a client. And rest assured, I am not doing them all for $100! (they're $350-$450 each!) That just makes no sense, especially if you anticipate your business to grow. If you don't anticipate that, why even bother?

My business is so crazy right now that I'm very seriously considering raising my prices to slow things down a bit. I would be very happy with considerably less business right now, as I've been working like a crazy man since February.

As far as length of videos, a 2-3 minute video is really optimum for cats in the clothes dryer, but not necessarily applicable to real estate. If people actually WATCH the video, they're a serious buyer and they want to see everything. They WILL watch a 5, 7 minute or even longer video if they are interested in BUYING the house. If they're not interested, they won't watch if for a second! Real estate video isn't exactly "entertainment". Just as if you watched a wedding video, you probably wouldn't watch it for more than a minute or two... UNLESS it was your daughter, in which case you would watch it for 30 minutes... and again and again!

My stats show that most videos are viewed almost 90% through if not more, and they are all at least 4-5 minutes in length or longer. Video is the FIRST SHOWING. It qualifies the buyer. If they make an appointment for a personal visit, it's a second showing. First they view the photos, THEN the video if they are still interested, not the other way around.... You don't whet the appetite with a teaser video, you do that with the (hopefully) excellent photos.

I did a house on Martha's Vineyard last year for a seller. His home had been on the market for 3+ years. I did the video and the broker received four offers almost immediately and it sold. Those are the brokers who hired me for this week to shoot their entire inventory - all based on the response for that one video that was purchased by the seller!

Most of my work is under "corporate video" and most of that comes to me for my skills as an editor. While I can go out and capture footage, I find my greatest pleasure coming from what happens after the filming. It also allows me the ability to use a large royalty free stock library I've amassed (video, stills, music, graphics, fx, etc...)and just do the voiceover/text and fill in whats still missing with my home grown "stock" video sequences and stills.

Plus this way if the footage sucks (happens more than you would believe - working on a project right now like this) I can just blame the videographer and become the hero and save the day with my cleanup skills, related stock or stuff I just go out and quickly tape myself.

The difference between a labor of love and paying the bills - Many years ago, I was a high priced IT consultant (back in the day when the skills were appreciated and revered). One client was especially troublesome in giving clear directions and explicitly told me not to do anything unless I got "direction" from him. One day, he came walking by as I was just sitting there - He looked at me and asked "Why do I pay you?" to which I replied "You pay me to be here, whether I work or not is dependent on you". Needless to say, he started letting me to my own devices from that point forward (and got a lot of work for it).

I have to pay the bills, that's the bottom line. Video has allowed me to do that for more than 20 years. Before that and since, I have enjoyed creating labors of love. A product of passion. I'm thankful I get to apply a little bit of that passion in everything project I do that pays the bills. I'm more thankful that I still put it into projects that mean eveything to me when I am in between jobs that feel more like work.

I often market directly to the funeral homes, churches, ministers and other officiants, and related service providers. It is much easier and more approachable than, for example, sending a direct-mail piece or making a phone call to individuals ... " So, when you die, if you'd like to preserve the memories of all the wonderful things that are said about you, my video company does funerals." ;-) People individually aren't too excited about end-of-life events, or preserving them ... until it happens. I know you realize this, but was just trying for a bit of levity.

The primary hurdles in making ANY approach toward providing end-of-life related video services for the above establishments is tenacity, and once you DO break through their initial reluctance to listen to your spiel, then be prepared to be tested ... tested for patience, tested for reliability, tested for just about every promise you might make. The family counselors WANT to KNOW you will be there for them no matter when, what time or where, and the only way you're going to get them is by continually proving you CAN deliver WHEN they need you. In the early stages, slip up just once by not being able to deliver a service or product (memorial montages) and it can be a serious challenge to ever get them to use you again.

I've put all my experience into a resource package that has been rated outstanding by several persons who have acquired it. You can find "They Shoot Funerals, Don't They" at Lulu.com where I offer the most complete funeral and memorial marketing and production resource available. Look it up by title, or by my name Earl Chessher, if curious.

EarlC, you've posted an interesting question... I'm (relatively) new to video for hire, doing mostly Real Estate videos, which is progressing to other areas. I've decided to pursue video production as a source of income.

In pursuing the funeral/memorial videos, do you market more to the end clients or to the funeral homes directly? This same question can be asked of the "school events" as well? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
