It's not for version 10 but Douglas Spotted Eagle's Vegas editing books are top notch.

Also, Spot can be found answering questions on the Sony Vegas forums.

Log onto the Sony web site and create an account (free) in the Vegas Pro Editor's Forum. This is a global community of editors and users of Vegas; it's an invaluable tool for getting help. Typically a question posted will receive an answer within the hour.

Do your homework, of course -- i.e., print out and read the documentation that comes with Vegas Pro, and study the help menu -- but when you're still stuck, ask for help. We're all willing to give it.

Good luck.

Three things -

1) Organize your clips into one unique directory, where they can be easily found and archived/restored when done.

2) The Trimmer is your best friend - Learn to use it.

3) If you are cutting a music vid, or even a production keyed to the music (like a slide show), start with the audio (music) track alone, then play through the song hitting the "M" key on the keyboard to mark beats where cuts (or other transitions) make sense - Makes precise cuts very easy.

Oh, also, adding one clip at a time and then rendering them to use later on takes WWWAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY too much time (notice the extra ww,aa,and yy's for effects). If you do decide to do them that order, just convert them using a conversion program.

The way i edit is Sony Vegas 10 is pretty simple.

I first put all my video clips in order, trim, move the audio and video around, until i have the basic "backbone" of the video. I then proceed to edit my audio, adding songs and effects to them if needed. I finish up adding the video effects, and then fine tuning them.

I do it in that order so the rendering is a bit quicker when im doing the more simple editing part. But i guess each editor has their own technique. BTW, nice camera you got :)

Gerry

As a singer songwriter you will appreciate that Vegas was an audio editor before it became a video editor.

Very basic is that you import you video clips into Vegas you can preview them as well as trim them in a preview window and then drop them on to the time line in the order you want to use them. As you do that they will be added to your project media folder.

That is a very simple work process and there are so many option on the way you can work in Vegas. There are some tutorial videos on the web that you can search on. I would higly recomend the Vegas training DVD's from VASST. They get you through a lot of the small things that you need to know that can take the frustration out of the edit. I find that the Sony documentation is a little lacking of detail.

There are a lot of options on effect. You can apply some if not all effects to a whole time line if you choose, or to individual clips depending on what you are trying to achieve.

As far as rendering that is the last thing that I do. How you render depends on what you are going to do with the video. If you are creating a DVD and using the Vegas DVD software you will render the video and audio seperatly. Vegas has a lot of pre-sets for rendering depending on what you are doing

Good luck

Tony

Hello All.

I don’t come from a photographic background (I am a Singer/songwriter/producer) but I always loved making videos with my Sony HD camera and, I recently bought a Canon 550D/T2i camera as well.

My question is this:

After shooting my video with my DSLR or video camera, what’s the best way to go about editing it?

I bought Sony Vegas Pro 10…. (I like to jump in at the deep end!!)

I also bought Cineforms NeoScene and Magic Bullets Mojo.

Let’s say that I have a 3 minute video with about 50 clips…..do I import all my clips onto the timeline together and edit, apply the effects etc or, should I just import one clip at the time, edit it, add effects etc and then export it for use later on?

If I import one clip at the time….in what format should I render it for later use in the making of the 3 minute video?

Thank you all very much in advance for your time and help.

Best wishes.

Well, HDV is by far not the best format. It's highly compressed, and capturing as uncompressed will do you no good. However, because of the long GOP compression of HDV, you don't want to edit in that codec either.

I would try to capture you footage as DVCProHD. While it won't increase the quality if your image, it is an i-frame codec and it will be less demanding on your computer than uncompressed. I know many people have done this with FCP. You should be able to do that with Premiere. The BlackMagic card should allow for that conversion during ingest.

What format of video are you shooting? And what software are you using to edit?

I'm sure there is no reason to capture uncompressed video. I'd be will be to bet that you are recording a compressed format, therefore, capturing as uncompressed video will not benefit you unless you are doing some intense color grading.

Hi all,

I bouhgt a Blackmagic capture card after reading a review article in VideoMaker from Mr. Fulton in April 2009. I liked the fact that he concluded by saying "this could be the last capture card you'll ever need". So I bought the Intensity Pro.

What I didn't realize is that this card would obligate me to buy a whole brand new computer, wayyyyy more powerful than the current one, which I thought was very decent to work with HD. (to help out, this computer is not connected to Internet by any case, it's just dedicated to HD editing).

Now, I run the Disk Speed utility, and I'm wayyyy too slow for the standards of my Intensity Pro in reading and reading, writing HD uncompressed goes all the way up to 465G/hour!

I didn't realize those numbers were that high and would ask a lot to a system.

But I really really really like to use the HDMI input to capture my footage. Firewire gives me trouble on a regular basis (dropped frames, camcorder not recognized...)

My question is : Can I use the card to capture through HDMI and in a way, capture in compressed mode ?

If I'm asking the question here, it's because I didn't get any answer back from the BlackMagic support team.

Thank you for any input!

Jean

The independent film foundry P.S.Y.C.H.O. PRODUCTIONS is about to release its first feature film "The Secret Of The Magic Mushrooms". A tale of great tension and disgust!
Actually it’s a kind of tragical comedy with occasional occuring gross splatter and gore incidences…

A few years ago, Sony had been including a small set of Magic Bullet plug-in effects. I remember that an "old film" effect was one of them. Just now I looked at my version 8, and don't see any mention of Magic Bullet. But I do see many plug-ins, incuding one for "old film". Maybe Sony decided they have enough Sony plug-ins, and no longer need Magic Bullet plug-ins. (Just my guess.)
